Ipod & Linux

Hi,
I have a nano ipod 4th G, and I'm actually using Linux Ubuntu 9.*, I tried syncing the ipod using rythmbox bacause there is no Itunes for Linux, but each time I play or transfert music, the ipod stops recognising all its contents and when I plug it on a computer running on windows it says that I have to restore it.
Is there any other way to sync my ipod on Linux or is there a Linux version of itunes coming soon ?
Thanks.

No one here would know if or when Apple is planning a version of iTunes for Linux. They have not to date which may tell you where it is on their priority list.
I can't personally recommend anything on this list but you may find it a helpful starting point:

Best of luck.

  • Unwanted Ipod linux thing

Okay... so my friend installed ipod linux on MY ipod. now i cant access the regular ipod menu options. I have tried to use the ipod updater (the one from 7/15/2004 because there is NO DOWNLOAD symbol for the new update on the website!!!) It says that it cant lock the ipod so it cant do anything with it. I took it to my buddies house, and he tried to update it and it just went through the updater with no change. How do i get the original ipod firmware back???? Oh yeah, and my 1- year warranty ran out like 2 months ago. When I turn on the ipod, I get the apple logo that switches to a exclamation mark and folder that says "www.apple.com/support/ipod" under it. If i hold the back button, it takes me to the ipod linux menu. This is very annoying, and I want to get my ipod back to the way it originally was and i dont care if it requires that i delete all my music. (Oh, and when i click the ipod liux icon, it comes up with a windows error message that says something like "path cannot be found..." PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Whoa, with friends like that ....
Can you restore the iPod to original factory settings? I'm not sure it will work if you can't use the iPod updater, but check out Restoring iPod to Factory Settings. Good luck! And keep your pals away from your precious iPod!
    Cheers,
    Carole

  • IPod linux.........is it any good?

I was wondering if its any good or not to download it onto my ipod 20GB ipod color. Can anyone help me decide?
P.S. What all can ipod linux do?

Installtion instructions for 4th Gen ipod, mini, and U2.
Information on how to get video on your ipod here:\

Edit: You dual boot linux and the default apple software.

  • Has anyone heard of Ipod Linux

You can configure your first generation/ipod minis to emulate the workings of a ipod video.

"Even so, the chances of software causing actual physical damage to any hardware device is slim to none."
It could very well cause hardware damage to the hard drive, screen, or any number of components if the specifications for operating that component are set improperly.
    Here are some examples provided by Rich Fleming in another Linux thread;
"For example, you can easily destroy a CRT monitor if you improperly set a refresh rate.
You can also render a many flash based devices completely useless if you improperly load firmware on them.
In fact, the PSP had an issue where some bogus firmware updates were floating around the net. An unknowing user would try to flash their PSP with the wrong firmware and basically "brick" their device. No amount of firmware reloading would help it."
So... yes. Software can break hardware.

  • HELP, I USED LINUX AND NOW MY IPOD NANO IS MESSED UP!!

I downloaded Linux for my Nano, but now I can do anything, all I get is a folder with a "!" on the folder, please help!

I think I figured out how to put your Ipod back into working condition, to the way you received, sort of in a "like new state" if you will. What I have just found on the Ipod linux forums is very easy, in fact alot easier than I thought, you would of had to use the HP disk format utility, but all you have to do is go ahead and use apple's firmware for the ipod, in case you don't know what that is, it's the software that apple releases which is basically in a pc user's words "the BIOS that controls your Ipod functions, such as backlight brightness, font type, etc. It's basically the Operating System". That's to put it into a easy understandable way. If all you are seeing on your nano is just an exclamtion point then you are in luck, all you do is restore your Ipod using the Apple Ipod updater, that is if your pc can detect your Ipod. Which I think if it didn't you would have posted that. So there you have it, your Ipod should be running as it once did, before a failed linux installation.

  • Can't Update/Restore/Use my iPod!!

My iPod worked, with all my music, it updated and everything. Then I put iPod Linux on it, and it worked just fine, but then I tried to update it, and it gave me the error message: An error occurred while trying to update/restore iPod. So I uninstalled iPod Linux, and tried again. Same error. So I tried to restore it. Same error. So I reformatted it in Disk Utility as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It still didn't let me update or restore it. I unplugged it and it gave me the folder/go to Apple/Support/iPod thing. I plugged it back in and iTunes opened and treated me like a person who just bought the iPod. It downloaded all my music onto the iPod. I unplugged it, and it still gave me the go to Apple iPod Support. So now my iPod has all my music on it, is formatted as Journaled Mac OS Extended, and doesn't work.
    Help!!

    My iPod works again. Yay.

  • Computer won't reconize iPod(Yet it still works fine as an iPod)

I have a 5.5 gen 80GB iPod, and it's always worked fine(Even through multiple attempts at using iPod Linux and Rockbox). Last night I go and plug it in to my Linux laptop, worked fine for what I used it for(just getting to files I had saved on it), and as far as I know(First time using Linux, just installed it), I didn't do anything to it other then access files. Now when I go to plug it into my Windows box, it says there was some error reconizing it. What happened and how do I fix it?

Ah, just turned out to be a fluke. I plugged it into my Linux computer again today, trying to see if perhaps it changed the filesystem or something. Worked fine on Linux, file system was still FAT32(Standard iPod filesystem), so I tried it once more on the Windows box, works fine now.

  • Can you watch movies on the new iPod nano?

I know you can watch movies on the iPod video, but i wasnt sure if i'd be wasting my money on buying a movie from the itunes store and not being able to watch it.
      Windows XP

The iPod nano does not support video. The processor is not strong enough, along with other things.
Also, do not try iPod Linux, even though you might hear that its awesome.
    1. Even iPod Linux does not support iPod nano downloads.
    2. Voids any Warranty you have on yoru iPod.
    3. Not unusual for it to leave your iPod as a large domino, and with no warranty, you're out of luck.
    I hope this helps!

  • ITunes update bad for my ipod ?!?!

My ipod has been working great for the past 2 years, well, I power up with the wall plug and haven't updated any of my itunes or ipod software for probably 8 months. I updated my itunes to the recent version and then reset and updated my ipod. Now I can't put music on it with out getting an error about reading or writing files from the disk. Heres what I know:
-I can reset the ipod without any issues.
-I can add contacts to the ipod without any issues.
-when I try to add songs through itunes it's very slow and after 3 songs gives me an error and quites. I can add songs like this 3 at a time by un-mounting and mounting the ipod.
-I can't add songs to the ipod through winamp, realplayer, and windows media player won't even recognize that it's plugged in (even though it shows up in MyComputer)
-The songs that are added slowly are Mp3's imported from older versions of itunes, Wav files generally don't work, although I have some sound effects that are under 5 seconds long and they sync to the ipod fine.
then I installed ipod linux to see if a different format would help at all.
So I don't think it has anything to do with my ipod's capability to read and write to the disk, and its not that old. It's a 4th generation click wheel thats around 2 years old.
    any ideas?
do I really have to send this in?
      Windows XP Pro

I've had the same problem! My $400 Kenwood kdc-x993 receiver is now worthless! I just bought it in June, but after installing the iPhone update it no longer recognizes the iPhone (older iPods still work).

  • IPod Photo Being USELESS

    Ok, here is my story...
I bought a 60 Gig iPod Photo in June of 2005, thus the two year warrentee has now expired. I now have about my 7th or 8th iPod, because I have sent mine away soo many time for service. What is up with that? And now, out of nowhere, my iPod has done it again, the sad iPod icon strikes AGAIN... and there is nothing I can do now, because I am not covered. Thankfully I just ordered a new MacBook Pro for school and I decided to get the 80 Gig Video iPod with it, because I KNEW this would happen to my Photo one again. I am so frustrated with the iPod right now that it is SICK... like... does anyone know what is wrong! I always take care of my iPod... disconnect properly, etc. Is it because I have nearly 60 gigs of stuff on it...?? Can the HD not handle it all?! Would that make a difference?! I don't know... I am just wondering if ANYONE else has had this problem... I mean, sending my iPod away to get a new one has become nearly a monthly thing... not sure why... it is so odd... these things just freeze up and there is nothing you can do... once you get that sad iPod symbol it's jsut time to say some curse words and head to Apple Support... only now I have NOTHING to turn to... because my Apple Care is expired... does anyone know even how much it costs to replace it if you're not covered...?? Probably a lot... and probably not worth my money if I have a video one on the way.... Any input from anyone...??

There are many reasons your iPods are sad:
    You may have:
    -corrupt files on it
-a bug/virus on it (even though, it is not likely if you use a Mac)
-installed 3rd party software unapproved by Apple (e.g. iPod Linux)
-placed your iPod in an unsafe environment (e.g. hot temperature, like a parked car...well your in Canada so I don't know about that)
I had an iPod photo 40GB, and it erased itself after about half a year of using it as a backup hardrive (I used like 37GB of it). So, it is possible that too much space is taken. If you are constantly accessing large files (like I was - files over 1-2GB like movies) it may just say to itself "I've had enough!" like mine did.

  • RE: ipod not working ipod ready head unit

I've had the same problems, and weirder ones, with my tC and my 5G iPod. My suggestion is to download and reload the original iPod firmware that came with the iPod. I'm not sure where you can get it online, but I made a backup of my iPod firmware that I've used while experimenting with using non-supported software, like iPod Linux. I'm going to try that later today and I'll see if that helps.
ever since i upgraded my ipod and my itunes the ipod has been acting >>weird when i connect it to my Car stereo. I have the upgraded ipod ready >>headunit for the Scion TC and when i got to browse song titles in an artist >>folder some times it won't show me the song titles but instead shows me >>the artist list again. Also if you dont have your ipod on repeat you have to >>disconnect the ipod and play any file then reconnect it to get the ipod to >>work. Please fix this Apple. Everything is so screwed now. I can't even get >>my new office eps on my ipod.

    Try this.
How to reset the iPod if it appears frozen or doesn't respond.
It may take quite a few attempts and is best done connected to power.

  • So, what, I can't charge iPod without a PC - using a wall or car charger?

Hey, hopefully you guys will be more useful than Apple's support line, saying that Apple won't support non-Apple accessories (that is, basically, everything... since Apple didn't even provide a charger with the iPod to begin with). Basically (and even specifically) saying that Apple doesn't recommend using anything but a computer to charge.
That means no charging at work, no charging in the car, no charging whenever it's "convenient"... only charging when iPod is connected to a computer. That's the predicament I'm in now.
If I plug iPod into any device that starts iPod up as a disk device (MSD driver), it'll start charging. If I don't plug it into something that initializes it as a disk (i.e. a 5vdc USB charger), it won't charge. If I plug it into a powered hub without a computer, it doesn't charge. If I plug that same hub into a computer (keep in mind, it's still getting power from the adapter here), guess what? It charges.
What, the crap. Why did Apple do this? Most of the reason I chose to finally buy an iPod (even though I'm plenty happy with my other MP3 players) was because of the plethora of innovative third party add-ons. Now I can't use a charger? What gives?
Or is there really something wrong with my iPod? I've tried several USB chargers that work with my other USB devices (my Pocket PC, my phone, etc), that don't work with iPod. Strangely enough, Google revealed that nobody else seems to be having a similar problem, or if they are, that it's because the USB charger is underpowered (which, while is understandable for my cheesy Chinese USB device chargers, is not the case with the powered hub).
    Thoughts?

I didn't even know about a video-out spec change (nor do I use video out, I just got my first iPod!)...
Just, what has me ticked is that I can charge any of my other USB-charging devices like my cell phone and PDA, by just providing +5v to the USB port like a powered hub does without a computer, or a cheap Chinese car adapter does. That's how I modified my cell phone's provider-branded data cable to charge the phone via USB - as it stood, it would only provide data through the cable and drain the battery even though the phone was being provided +5v into its USB circuit. I simply soldered a couple wires ("open source" hardware I call it - the connector simply unscrews and has all its contacts exposed to tweak with!). Easy fix.
But what I find with the iPod is that it's the only device that needs to be "forced" to charge even when it has 5 volts sitting right in front of it. Strangely (and sadly), I did a Google on the iPod dock connector and found on the iPod Linux wiki that there actually needs to be a resistor in place between a couple of USB pins in order to force the iPod into "charging" mode when connected to +5v. So basically, yeah, it will charge, but since my hub isn't an iPod charger, and the cheap chargers I have (that only provide USB 5v) don't have that resistor, I guess it was just ignoring it.
Great job leaving the consumer guessing, Apple. At least now there's a forum post on this (irritating) subject for those of us that don't associate "new device" with "new accessories" but instead find ways to make our old accessories work for the new devices. Guess it's to the soldering iron with me...

  • IPod Video convert

    hi,
I have an iPod Photo with ipod linux on it. I downloaded a program that is only an EXE file to be opened in the command line or whatever its called. On my PC i double click the program, it opens it in the command line and then guides me through the steps of converting the video to ipod. my question is, can I open this on the terminal in mac? if I can, how. I tried just opening it normally and it said

wont work. you cannot use windows executable (.exe) files on a mac unless running some sort of emulation software such as Virtual PC or iEmulator. for converting video files to ipod linux video format try quicktime pro or ffmpeg.

I was just wondering, is there any way to change the look of the iPod nano's interface without voiding your warranty?
I don't want to void my warranty bi installing Rockbox or iPod linux.
