IPod listing the same artist numerous times...

Before you read any further, please understand that this is NOT A TAGGING PROBLEM. I've been told it is many times (by people who aren't having the problem themselves) even after telling them it's not, and it's starting to become slightly annoying that no ones wants to believe me. Now, onto the problem...
A few weeks ago, I loaded some new songs into my itunes library, and tried to sync my iPod to accquire them onto it. For some reason, when I went to check if they were there, the artist was listed 5 times for no apparent reason. This hadn't happened before adding these new tracks, nor has it happened to any other artist since. Under each listing of the artist are all the albums and songs I have by them, so as I said, it is not a tagging problem. I posted this about a month back on this board when it happened, and got 2 common responses. 1 was "It's a tagging problem"...no, it's not. The other was people who were having the same problem, so at least then I knew it wasn't my specific iPod or iTunes with the problem. If anyone has any comments or solutions to this problem, feel free to post them and hopefully this can get figured out. Thanks in advance to everyone.

Well, I just checked, and no I don't have anything in the sort fields for any of the songs. I haven't heard any mention of that field before though so at least it's a step in a new direction.
As for the case sensitive problem, that would also be considered a tagging problem (to me anyway), and by now I've assured there's no tagging problems whatsoever.
Again, if anyone else is having this problem and/or has found a way to fix it, please let me know. Thanks to all.

How do I get ituens to not list the same artist more than once?  I have tried editing the info, sorting different ways and sometimes it works and sometimes not...it's very frustrating to me to have the same artist listed multiple times...

Setting a common Album Artist for each Album does most of the work. For deeper problems see Grouping tracks into albums.
In general you need to make sure that all the values in the tags are used consistently. Same spelling, same capitalization, same accents, no leading, trailing, or multiple spaces, and each value of Artist, Album Artist or Album should only be associated with one value of Sort Artist, Sort Album Artist or Sort Album respectively.

  • I-Pod shows the same artist 10 times or over and over

I Pod classic shows the same artist over and over

There are many reasons this could happen, but I'll list a few possibilities:
    1) You have your iPod on manually manage, and you've dragged the same songs many times onto the iPod.
    2) You have many duplicates of the songs in iTunes and it's syncing everything to the iPod.
    3) There's something wrong with the iPod and you should restore it in iTunes and set it back up fresh and load the songs you want back onto it.  Keep in mind that restoring the iPod will lose things that are on it, so make sure you have your songs in iTunes before doing this.

  • IPod displaying the same artisit more then once in the artist view

When I sync my library to my ipod, my ipod displays copies of the same artist. Right now it is 3 copies and I was wondering a way to fix it.
I have purchased the songs in question from the itunes store. and the artists that are repeated have the same albums and songs listed under them... Im refering to the "artist" sort mode on the ipod
I know this isnt a tech forum per say.. but this is really annoying me and would like to know how to fix it..
This is what my ipod displays when I go to sort by artisit
    Coldplay
    Daughtry
    Daughtry
    Daughtry
    Disturbed
Im sure you see the problem and yeah... appreciate the help if someone can help me.
Also the 2 artists that are doing this are daughtry and our lady peace... both of whom I purchased the music from the itunes store

Select all the songs in the iTunes library by the same artist (all at the same time). While all are highlighted do a Get Info. Is the Artist field blank? If so that means there is an actual difference between two or more of the selected tracks for that field. Mispellings, added space characters, accent marks on some by not the others, etc. Simple solution is to now type in the artist name (to be applies to all the songs equally), OK out of there and see if the iPod looks right after re-syncing.

  • Songs listed under same artist in iTunes, but not on iPod!?

I have six songs with Marilyn Manson in iTunes; four of them are from the "Lest We Forget"-album. For the other two, I do not have any album-information.
In iTunes, all six songs are listed under Marilyn Manson. On my iPod, however, when I browse to Marilyn Manson, only the four songs from the "Lest We Forget"-album are listed. The other two songs are missing when I browse by artist. However, when I browse by song, the two songs are there all right. And when I play the songs, Marilyn Manson is listed as the artist.
Anyone experienced anything similar? I know this could be the case if the name of the artist is spelled differently for the different songs, but this is not the case here. No exstra spaces in the artistname, exactly the same spelling for all six songs. Still, my iPod is not able to list all songs correctly under the same artist... Any solutions?
    cheers,
    pj

nope, there is no "all albums". I do not actually get to choose any albums at all; the iPod just goes directly from Marilyn Manson to display all four songs in the "Lest We Forget"-album. Just like when you just have one album for an artist and iPod just skips the "choose album"-screen.
Anyway, seems like this is a bug and has been discussed before:

Do the un-syncing ones play in iTunes?
Try directly redownloading them on the iPod

  • Ipod duplicates albums. All the same artist, same everything. How can I fix this?

Ipod duplicates albums. All the same artist, same everything. How can I fix this?
All the details are the same. In my itunes library it shows as ONE whole album. When I import it to my ipod classic 160 gb it duplicates it about 4 times; it's quite irritating. It does that for 2 albums in particular and I have no idea why. Please help! Thank you.

    Editing Info
Each audio or video file in iTunes has several settings and tags that can be easily modified. These options can be accessed by selecting any file in the iTunes browser windows and selecting "Get Info" from the File menu. You can add song lyrics, artwork and set special playback options. The "Info" tab lets you edit information about the file including artist and album info.
Once you have updated the information, close the iTunes application on the computer.  Then reopen and resync to your iPod.

Can two ipods with the same email address face time independantly?

Hey Bumblebee, To each other, no-- would be like trying to call yourself on the same phone. To different persons on other devices??? Not sure you'll have to try, I'm guessing if both are online you may well dial up on both, (once had the same address on the my computer and iPod, both would ring when called, this stopped when I changed the iPod's address). If you change one of the iPod's e-mail address you should be fine. You'll have to do a little experimenting. Hope this helps, Good luck. Cheers.

  • I have music files by the same artist but they are listed in itunes in more than one album hod can i add then to just one album pf that artist

I have music files by the same artist but they are listed in Itunes in more than one album hod can i add then to just one album of that artist I am using windows 8.1 .

iTunes will group songs into an album when:
All songs have the same value for the Album and Artist field, or
All songs have the same value for the Album and Album Artist field
All songs have the same value for the Albumfield and the Part of a Compilation flag is checked.
If you want to group all the songs by one artist into a single "album" you can do so by following one of these rules.  However, it may be more useful to create Playlists to group music like this and retain the original release information.  One Smart Playlist for each artist you're interested in would meet this need without over-writing information about the source albums.

Sure.  Each iPod is identified in iTunes with its own name and you configure each one as you wish:

  • Duplicate pages for the same artist

Hi, In the Indian Classical instrumental music there are two artists with duplicate pages due to slight variation in name or spelling. These are Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia Pandit is a title. These should be combined so all albums show up together. Shivkumar Sharma, Shiv Kumar Sharma Here the first name has been split. These should be combined so all albums show up together. Thanks for an awesome music service with great features! regardsDushyant

For some iPods, they just can't seem to reconcile the different file formats, and you end up with duplicate entries of the same artists. That has been my problem and have had to learn to live with it.
    I've not had that problem.
The usual reason why an artist appears several times is because of spelling differences, capitalistion, or guest artists.
For example, "Dire Straits" and "Dire straits" may appear together in your iTunes Library, but become separate entries on the iPod. "The Clash" is different to "Clash, The".
If one track on an album is listed differently to the rest, say as "The Clash featuring a guest artist", then this too would be listed separately to "The Clash".  The usual fix for this is to add the featured artist to the track name and remove it from the artist's name.
The hardest one to spot is stray spaces after a band name . You can see the one I deliberately put in at the end of that last sentence, but it's not so easy in the Artist field, where full stops (period) are not used.
An easy tip is to copy the artist name from one track, and paste it into all the others by that artist. Then Sync the iPod with your Library for these changes to take effect on the iPod.

Unfortunately you've discovered too late how important it is to maintain an up-to-date backup of your iTunes library (and all other data of value).  You could, before wiping the drive, have considered making use of a commercial data recovery service that could (albeit at considerable cost) have extracted your library from the hard disk, even if virus infected.
In the absence of that option, you will need to restore the content of your library from its original sources:
Depending on your location, you may be able to re-download any iTunes Store purchases that are still available on the Store
Likewise, most digital purchases from Amazon (including auto-rip copies of purchased CDs) should be available from the Amazon Cloud and via the Amazon Music application - the same may be true of other commercial sources for digital downloads
Content imported from your CDs will have to imported again
The specific situation that you describe regarding the music imported from your friend's external HDD suggests that either the source is badly organized and/or originates from a source other than iTunes (other media players may use alternative tags for information like artist, title, album, etc. that are not wholly consistent with how iTunes handle these).  Without details of the issues you're seeing it is difficult to suggest a remedy other than going through the media album-by-album, track-by-track, and correcting the inconsistencies.
In the absence of a backup or access to the original library data there is no option other than painstakingly recreating your library as described above.  As you do so, you'll now realize how important creating and maintaining backups are - in my case I have at all times three separate duplicates of my library, in two different locations, where none is ever more than a week old compared to the content of my master library.
