IPod locks up my computer

When I plug my iPod into my computer, all applications that would use iPod lock up (iTunes, windows explorer, iPod updater, etc) this is a major problem because when my iPod is not plugged into my computer it still has problems like skipping songs, responding slowly, and sometimes displaying the folder ! message. I have a 20gb with click wheel ipod and have had it since December 2004. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hello sfleuret
Try putting the iPod into Disk Mode to restore it, then you should not see iTunes lock up and then sync like normal again.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    Or maybe:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • I plug my Ipod touch into my computer nothing happens.

2 days ago while listening to my ipod touch at work, the music just stopped playing(my ipod was locked) when I unlocked my ipod the song i was listening to wouldn't play, however other songs would for about a minute,a nd then they would do the same thing. I then decided to shut down my ipod touch, however instead of restarting it gave me a picture of itunes and the USB adapter. so i put it on my wall charger thinking it needed to be charge, I left it there for half an hour. when I came back the picture of Itunes and my USB adapter where still on the screen, I then decided to reset the ipod itself(held down the lock and home button for 15sec's) after that it worked fine. However when i got home and tried to connect my ipod up to my computer nothing happened. I've been trying for the last 2 days and nothing is working, the 5 R's didn't work(yes I made sure I removed everything apple related(Itunes, Quicktime, Apple Application Support, and Apple Moblie Device Support)). I reinstalled itunes 9.2.1 and still nothing happens(my computer does beep and my ipod goes to the charging screen however no harddrive appears in my computer, and nothing shows up in itunes.) Can anyone help?

Forgot to say that my Ipod Touch is at 100% charge

  • IPod connected to other Computer

    Hi guys
i lately tried to connect my iPod to my friends Computer. after doing this i opened iTunes and everything was fine except for one thing: eventhough all my files were listed and shown they were almost invisible, indicating me that i can't use or play them on this computer. i went home and tried the same procedure but this time i could play all my songs.
so is it that you can't play your songs on other computers except on ypur own or what?
    thanks for your help
    Pete

If you are seeing grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen then your iPod is set to automatically update. If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you need to change the update method to "Manually manage music and videos" in the iPod preferences. For more detail see these tutorials:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
One thing to be aware of with manually updating is that the iPod also has to be manually ejected before the "Do Not Disconnect" message will go away. Safely disconnect iPod

  • Ipod locking up

Hello, I plugged my Ipod into my normal computer to update as I have done many times. It locked up my computer and after a few hours I decided to unplug it. My Ipod has said "do not disconnect" every since. When I plug it into my computer and fire up Itunes at first it would say its corrupt and needs to be restored. When I tried that it said it couldnt. Now it wont even give me that option. The Ipod has been on saying only not to disconnect for about 6 hours now. This Ipod is the 30 gig with 6 gig used and about 4 months old. If anyone could help that would be great. Thanks

Have you tried using the telephone portion of it?
    That might work.

Can someone tell me how to go back to a previous version of the OS/Firmwere.
Sorry I do not know - but I suggest you try the following first
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    Then
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

  • Ipod Locks Up. Itunes won't Recognize, and Can't Disconnect!

I have a U2 special edition 20 GB Ipod. This is #2 as the same thing happened with #1.
I plug it into my computer to update from itunes. I get the "Do Not Disconnect" message, tho itunes fails to recognize it. It appears to be locked up. I can hear it cycling through. It starts up, I hear a click, it shuts down. Over and over. I can't eject, because itunes doesnt recognize it is even plugged in, and I am afraid to unplug it. I tried to reset. It didn't work. This very same thing happened with my last ipod, i rebooted the computer, and it totally fried the ipod. I was left with the folder/exclamation point icon and had to send it in for a new one.
I am going camping this weekend and really wanted my tunes. Can anybody help?

I give up. I downloaded the new version onto my laptop, it had some sample files already preloaded, so I tried to update my ipod with those. What do you know? It worked GREAT! So, I upgraded the itunes on my home puter to the latest version and tried again. It recognized my pod and immediately began to update. So, I left to do some things, and when I came back, my computer had rebooted and once again my ipod had playlists but not a single song loaded. With the luck on my laptop, however, I thought I would upload an album to that itunes and try it that way. Now the laptop itunes also refuses to recognize my ipod. I wish I could find it entertaining that the sample files preloaded with itunes work but absolutely nothing else will. I also realized I didn't have the latest update (9-23)so I downloaded that too. It locks up my computer. Freaking Marvelous! 5 hours pretrip down the drain, nothing to show for it, and one long-assed drive without tunes. THANKS APPLE! You have done a superb job of convincing me I no longer have any need for your products.

  • HT1414 ipod locked up because forgot password and back it up to restore and now it comes up with "ipod cannot be restored error occured 2009" can you help me?

My Ipod locked up because I forgot my password when it opened to the lock  screen and it then said IPod disabled connect to itunes. When we did that it asked to restore did that and backed up my ipod then restored. Now it says "IPod connect be restored and unknown error has occurred 2009". What do we need to do now"? Can someone please help?

    Error 2000-2009 (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, and so on)
If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, displays, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related toconflicting security software. If the errors persist on another computer and known-good USB cable, the device may need service.
The "device may need service" means a hardware problem. In that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
