Ipod( mac formatted) on pc....

i know that if the ipod's formatted for a mac, it wont work on a pc. however, could i still use it as a hard drive on the pc, or is this also not possible? i just connected it to a pc, and it seems to be charging, and shows up as an external disk, but I'm not sure... can someone please explain

It's not possible with Windows by itself.
Windows cannot read or write to an HFS+ volume without the use of third party software.
You can install something like MacDrive to allow windows to read and write to your Mac formatted iPod.

  • Sync an iPod (Mac formatted) with a library on pc via local network

    Hi all u supportive people!
I´ve bought an iPod classic 80 and a MacBook w OS 10.5 Leopard, and I have a windows pc as well. My problem is to transfer files from my large iTunes library at my pc to my iTunes at my new MacBook in order to sync my iPod (Mac OS formatted)afterwards. How do I do that??? My computers connects nicely through my wireless network at home. In both iTunes their corresponding libraries are shown. But I´m unable to drag songs from lib to lib. Howcome? Does anyone of u have a suggestion ? I´ve tried (almost) everything.
    best regards,
    Peter

As I understand it you can only play music from a shared library visible in iTunes, not copy that music to another library or iPod. If you can make a Windows shared folder visible to the Mac however, you can then add those files from their existing network location into the Mac's iTunes library, and then sync with your iPod.

  • IPod disk formated? How to install it back all the players/programs?

I am using MacBook and iPod. Once I've wanted to take copy all my videos from my iPod, which I've put in manualy into a hardrive (without iTunes) using MacBook, just copy and paste. When I've conected my iPod to the PC (my friends computer), on My computer my iPod icon showed up, but everytime I wanted to enter, they asked me "do you want to format you disk" Yes and No. After couple of times I finaly press Yes. Now my ipod is empty. If I connect normaly to my macbook itunes, it tells me that your ipod hard drive might be damaged and you need to download ipod software update. Is this the actual itunes update or something else? And how can I update it when I get that software. Everytime I connect my ipod to itunes, it pops up a second and back again - gone.

When formatting iPod (mac formatted) on window, so windows can see it, it will format it completely where you will lose everything, from all what data you have on, and also the ability to use it as a player.
When you putted in back on you mac, Mac saw is surely as a "damage" or corrupted iPod. Reason windows when it formatted it , it will not "install" the nesecary files the iPod need to let it run/work as an iPod. And iTunes on mac will see that and tells you that.
So Mac will and want to RESTORE your iPod back to it's normal state. Meaning just iPod. And again, when Mac does this Restore you will lose again all data on that.
Restoring an iPod on both mac or windows, you will lose everything.
To move movies from mac to windows on an iPod, you have to have a 3rd party program that lets you do that. (without having to "crack" your iPod), because Mac will ALSO formatted an iPod to mac format. And Windows doesn't recognice it. So windows will ask to format it. But if you have a 3rd party program that lets windows read the file system of mac, you might be able to do that..

  • Mac Formatted iPod Mini, want to use on PC then back to Mac?

I want to use my Mac formatted iPod Mini on a PC when I'm away for Christmas, but when I return home I want to use it on my Mac again. Is formatting the iPod to a PC required to do this? I don't want to lose all my music when I'm away because there will be no way to get it back till I return home. And, if I must format for a PC, what will happen when I plug it back into a Mac? Do I have to reformat again? Has anybody accomplished this successfully?

An iPod formatted with Windows will work with Windows or Mac.
An iPod formatted with Mac will not work on Windows. WIndopws cannot read Mac.
If you format with Windows, you will not need to reformat with Mac.

  • Using a mac formatted ipod on a PC iTunes

My iPod is synchronised to my Mac at home but I want to be able to use it at work (PC environment) on iTunes on my PC. However, when I plug it in using a USB connector, it does not show on iTunes at all.
Is this possible or is there a problem crossing between Mac formatted iPods and PC iTunes?
any pointers are welcome - thanks.

Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows.

If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.

  • Ipod mini formatted for mac not recognized by PC

    Hi,
    Thanks in advance for help.
I have an ipod mini that was formatted on an ibook at work. i no longer have access to that computer and tried to connect the ipod to my PC. my pc does not see the ipod either under my computer or in itunes. i think it's a mac formatted ipod and i would like to restore it to windows, but it appears i need to have itunes find it in order to restore it. what do i do now?
    thanks.

First, put the iPod into forced disk mode.
See: How to put the iPod into disk mode.
    Now can iTunes see it?
If not, you could try a format of the iPod in Windows.
On your PC, go "my computer" and right click on the iPod, then choose "format". Ensure the settings are at "default" and choose "quick format".
When that's finished, restore the iPod using the updater in iTunes.
To exit forced disk mode, reset the iPod.

  • IPod not recognized after restoring from Mac format.

    Hey,
I used my old iPod photo with my Mac for a long time. Recently I got a new iPod video and enjoy it a lot. I ended up selling my old iPod to my dad on the conditions that I had to put all the music on there for him .
Anyway, I know that Mac formatted iPods aren't recognizable on Windows PC's. Thus, I restored my old iPod to its original factory settings using the iPod software updater/restorer before trying to load my dad's library from the PC. However, the iPod is still not being recognized by the PC. And when I try the update/restore on the PC it says "iPod service error." It does show up in the "My Computer" folder, however it says the disk must be formatted. If I formatted it manually on the PC and then tried restore on the PC would it then work?
    Thanks.

NEVERMIND. IGNORE TOPIC. My issue has been resolved.

  • Reconfigure a mac formatted ipod to allow use on pc.

my laptop won't recognise my hand me down ipod. it is formatted for a mac and i have a pc. i have the xplay3 softwhare that i was told will allow the use of the ipod. i have tried everything in the manual and then some. any help?

Run the xplay software. This will allow Windows to read the Mac formatted iPod.
Or else you can Restore the iPod in iTunes for Windows and it will work with iTunes on Windows and Mac.

  • Mac formatted ipod stuck in recovery mode when rescuing tunes onto a PC

    Hi
I have an ipod Nano (6gb) that is Mac formatted. I tried to recover the tunes from it to a PC desktop with Xplay. It started ok and then the ipod entered into recovery mode so it could be reformatted for Windows (I think itunes started doing it).
At that moment I couldn’t recover my tunes. Now whenever I use Xplay again it says "not accessible. The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.” So it’s stuck in recovery mode.
I know the tunes are still on the ipod because the amount of disk space taken up hasn’t changed, despite the ipod not actually showing the songs on the UI.
How can I fix this so I can grab all the tunes off the ipod before I restore the ipod in itunes and thus effectively formatting it?
    Cheers,
    L

Try changing the ipod's drive letter per these directions:

  • Mac formatted iPod to my PC

So, here's the story: I got an video ipod for x-mas, and at home we have a eMac, so I set it up on there, got all my music on it, downloaded Tetris, got that on there and all was good, at least until I got back to school. At school I have a PC, so you can probably guess what happened when I hooked my ipod up to my PC, it said you must restore this ipod in order to use it on this PC, but I don't want to restore it, because it has **** near 10G on it already, including my game, and since I'm not even close to home I can't get it from the mac. Is there ANYWAY I can import/save what's currently on my ipod? Please help!

sounds good and everyone keeps saying it, but it doesn't for me. opened mac formatted ipod w/ macdrive and none of the files contained anything..no photos in the photo file, no music file anywhere in site...any ideas?? (if not, we should probably stop telling everyone that it is "seemless" as i saw in a former discussion thread)
    thx

  • Mac formatted iPod connected to Windows

I have a 60gig iPod which is formatted to my iMac. I would like to use my iPod to move files from one machine to another. However when I connect it to a pc it asks me to reformat it everytime. Is there any way to connect to both mac and pc while having my iPod formatted for a mac?

Well, your other option is MacDrive... you can get a free trial(thats if you dont feel like formatting your ipod right yet) and use the ipod as a hard disk to transfer your music to a new computer. It will also enable itunes to write data to a mac formatted ipod. If you want to use it for long term use, you will have to pay for the program. I know i plugged in my mac formatted 4gen ipod and it popped up a messagein itunes asking if I wanted to enable itunes for use with a mac formatted ipod. I was only using mac drive as a temp solution to get music to another computer.
Mac drive is just one of the options, there are a few other programs that can enable mac formatted disks to be written too.

  • PC FORMATTED iPod read by MAC & PC?  MAC formatted iPod read only by MAC?

Is this how the formatting issue works? I'm looking to buy an iPod for a friend who (I think) has PC.....
Since I'm a mac person, I want to buy the gift, load some music on, and ship it off to the lucky recipient....but if they have a PC , will it be recongnized once it's plugged in?
    Any info would be helpful.
    Thanks.

PC FORMATTED iPod read by MAC & PC? MAC formatted iPod read only by MAC? Is this how the formatting issue works?
Yes, that is how it works.
Since I'm a mac person, I want to buy the gift, load some music on, and ship it off to the lucky recipient....but if they have a PC , will it be recongnized once it's plugged in?
Okay, unless you restore your iPod while you're on the Mac, I believe it will still be formatted for a PC.
(You will not need to restore the iPod for transferring music to it on a Mac unless you want to upgrade the iPod's firmware on a Mac computer, then it will have to be Mac-formatted).
You see, when you recieve an iPod, it is shipped to you as a Windows-formatted iPod, probably since the majority of the population has PCs, and also, PC-formatted iPods are compatible for music transfer for a Mac also.
    Does that make sense?
EDIT: Zevoneer has already answered your question, so you can ignore all of my post if you wish.

  • Mac formatted iPOD to windows

My ipod is formatted for my powerbook itunes the trouble is i have itunes also on a pc that has a different music library and iwant to be able to add the pc library to my ipod without having to re-format it to windows and loose all my data.I do not have access to my mac so iwill not be able to back my data up to the mac. Thanks

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay for instance gets good reviews and has the added functionality to let you copy your songs back to iTunes. Once you have your songs saved to the PC you can go ahead and restore the iPod for Windows. You can purchase XPlay at this link: XPlay 3
