Ipod makes a clicking/humming sound

I just bought a 80gb video ipod a week ago and i just recently noticed that when i use the controls or when it finishes playing an album, I can hear a faint clicking and humming sound. I'm assuming this is the internal hardrive but it does it quite often. Is this anything to worry about?
Sony VAIO notebook   Windows XP

I get the same thing when playing videos. I'm really frustrated with this...when i fast forward twice in a video, it makes these clicking sounds and after the 3rd one, the Ipod crashes. It's really annoying, I should have waited for the zune if this is the case. There were no recent updates on the firmware since I bought my new 30 gig in the apple store. No freaking firmware realease, everybody thinks that it'll be fixed with an new firmware update, but they never did have any new updates since the 5th gen release. SOB. I hate this product!

  • IPod:  Screen Freeze, Loud Humming Sound

With two different 8 GB iPhone's, I have experienced the same freeze while using the iPod feature. When I began to play a song, the iPhone froze on the album art screen of the song playing and played a loud humming sound that could not be shut off without a soft reset.
Unfortunately, the soft reset took over one minute to shut the phone off, and the loud humming sound cannot be shut off until the phone powers off. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and has anyone identified how to prevent the phone from freezing like that in the iPod mode?
    Thanks!

There is a bit more errror information available if you can read out the full kenel panic log and post the TEXT here.
Readers who study these things will come along and help determine possible causes. If you are getting multiple kernel panics with no underlying trend, that can be caused by RAM memory problems. The Mac Pro (65lb tower) uses Error Correcting Code (ECC) Memory, so its memory symptoms are quite different.

  • Nano won't respond makes high pitched humming sound when hooked to cable

I'm beginnign to feel jinked. lol This is the second Nano I've had since October. The first was returned because of a defective battery and promptly replaced. Now to the current issue.
This Nano has acted erratic from day one. The hold button malfunctioned immediately, but functioned sporadically. It would not "hold" the Ipod when I turned it on and the hold icon wouldn't appear when this happened. Then it appeared to never actually turn off when I tried to turn it off, although it would have a blank screen. Instead it appears to go into pause. This is proven out by the fact that the battery power goes down quickly from use to use. Then it just faded out and died as if the battery was drained. BUT, the computer (all three of them) wouldn't recognize the Nano when hooked up to the charging cable it came with. Now it is emmitting a high pitched humming noise, has a blank screen and the computer still won't recongnize it.
I sent this Nano back already for repairs. It was returned to me UNREPAIRED with a note saying no problems were found. There is ABSOLUTELY something wrong with it but unfortunately for me it decided to come on right before I shipped it to Apple. I assume that is why it appeared to be functioning.
I have yet another repair request in for it but my confidence level about it's eventual repair or replacement is sinking. The most frustrating part of this is I LOVE this product. It was a greatly appreciated addition to my workout routine and other music needs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to say I tried the 5 r's, called tech support, have been ALL over this forum, and have even asked other nano users I know for tips.

  • Ipod makes clicking sound when turning on and tells me to go to supposrt

My older Ipod makes a clicking sound when I turn it on and tells me to go to the support website. Any ideas what the problem is? I don't know what generation it is or what ISO what ever that is, I use. It was bought for my son many years ago and he has moved on to the newer ones, lol. I do know it is bulkly and heavy,

It probably needs service as it's indicative of a hard drive problem.
What does this picture on my iPod mean?

  • A constant varying humming sound

The computer constantly makes an audible humming sound that varies pitch constantly which is very annoying. When the computer was still under warranty, I called Toshiba technical support about the sound and they said that it was normal. At work I have a similar all-in-one HP computer and it does not make that sound. The computer works well otherwise. But this never-ending, constantly changing sound is extremely annoying. I don't know what to do with this computer. Years ago I purchased a Toshiba laptop that was a fine product. But with this computer, I am very unhappy.

Sounds like it may be coming from the hard drive, it is under and to the right of the touchpad. SEE PICTURE

  • My old 1st gen ipod touch wont turn on and makes a clicking sound when I plug it in.

My old 1st gen ipod touch wont turn on and makes a clicking sound when I plug it in. The ipod doesnt turn on when I plug it into the wall, even if I let it charge, and itunes won't recognize it. I have tried to reset it with the home and power buttons. Whats wrong and how can I fix it? I think it might be the memory or the battery. What could the clicking sound be related to? Thanks

Try placing the iPod in recovery mode and then try restoring the iPod.  For recovery mode see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
After that I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Greetings, I have an iPod Touch, that I recently tried to access the apps store. I can't enter my password, due to not being able to switch the keyboard to lower case letters. I tapped on the arrow up button, and it makes a click sound, but the letters do not change. Am I doing something wrong?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Dropped my ipod and now it makes a clicking sound and won't turn on at all. is it cheaper to get a new one or fix this one?

i have tile floors and i dropped my ipod classic flat on its back while it was off. i tried turning it on after that and it now it makes a clicking sound and won't even turn on. all it shows is a dead ipod and told me to go to apple.com/support/ipod. i'm not sure how to fix it or if it's even fixable. or is it just cheaper to get a new one?

If the phone will not power on try these three things:
Connect it to your phone charger
Connect it to your computer and open up iTunes
Perform a hard reset (Hold down the sleep/wake (top) button at the same time as the home (circle) button for 45 seconds. When the apple appears on the screen let go of both buttons.

  • When plugged into computer a song started skipping, pressed pause but ipod sounds makes a clicking sound. Eventually goes to black screen with red cross. Cannot reset it and doesn't register on my computer.

I had my iPod plugged into my computer and was playing the songs from there. One song started skipping so I pressed the pause button, the ipod kept making a clicking sound like it was still struggling to play the song, eventually went to a black screen with a red cross with apple.com/support/ipod underneath. Have tried to reset it but does not work, comes up with apple logo and immediately makes the clicking sound and then crashes.
Is there anyway I can get my music and photos off?? I just got a new computer and had lost everything on my old one so only have the songs and photos on my ipod, desperately want to get them on to my computer.

You may have damaged the HDD which is located in that spot. I would take it in for service.

  • Ipod makes clicking noise and won't be recognized by itunes.

I've had this ipod for about 2-3 years (5th generation 30 GB) and all of a sudden it started making clicking noises when i started it. So i connected it to my computer and all it does is (1). Start up with the Apple Logo (2). Make that clicking noise where it sounds a ticking clock. (3.) Please wait, very low battery. (then it goes forward after) (4). Shows some icon with an ipod with dead eyes ( x.x ), emergency icon and it says www.apple.com/support/ipod. Please answer because i have over thousands of songs and i dont have them on my itunes ( i transfer the songs to my itunes. then my ipod but then i had to reformat it and so the songs on itunes are gone and i have only my ipod)

ive got excatly the same problem, my pod (also had it 3yrs 30gb 5th generation) has started making the clicking noise, i get the apple symbol appear or the sad looking face, im unable to restore it and i think the sad face may mean its a hardware problem from wot ive read on the online support. but i dont know what to do or where to send it to be fixed or if it can be fixed, if you find out how it can be fixed please let me know its doin me head in.

    Hello xerxes.nashion,
It sounds like your iPod is not recognized by iTunes or your MacBook Pro.  I recommend following the steps in the article below for an issue like this:

my iPad 1 does not make any of the sounds (key clicking, etc) I have directed it to despite having volume turned all the way up...any thoughts?

Check to see if the "silent" switch is turned on. This is either the hardware switch next to the volume control or a software switch on the "recent apps" tray depending on how you have your iPad configured (Settings > General).
Too see the software switch on the "recent apps" tray double-click the Home button and swipe the tray to the right.
