IPod Meltdown

Hello all,
I plugged my iPod into the wall charger and when I went to retrieve it, the iPod was extremely warm. I turned it on and all of my songs were gone, and it was lethargic and unresponsive. I plugged it into the computer to sync and restore its software, and it began to do its disk diagnostic scan. After it had finished, it would not turn on: the Apple logo appears, waits for a few seconds, and then whirs and reboots, repeating the process. Nothing I do has helped; the self-reset does not permit it to turn on, and it will not boot up sufficiently for the computer to see it so I am still unable to perform a restore of Disk Utility scan/repair on it.
Does anyone have any ideas? I think the battery has gone bad, as evidenced by the hot iPod, and it may have taken the hard drive with it. It is a 3rd generation 10GB iPod, out of warranty, so it makes little financial sense to have it fixed. Might it be the battery, which I could have replaced (or replace it myself)? Is it likely the hard drive has failed too? Any advice or sharing of similar experiences would be most helpful!
Regards,
Jonathan Stricker

In my case, it turned out the that ipod was trying to use the same drive letter as one of the mapped network drives I had (G:). So what I did was go into services, disable the ipod service.
Then I reconnected the ipod, went into computer management, disk management and made the IPOD I:. Then I disconnected again, restarted the ipod services and lauched itunes and reconnected the IPOD. It came up properly.
I suspect that Apple will have to release an update to the updater, as it will do this on alot of computers.

  • IPod Meltdown - is it terminal????

    Hi - I've got a non colour, clickwheel iPod - 18 months old, think it's 3rd g.
I switch it on and I get the Apple logo, then the sad iPod face and then the 'fixed' charging symbol. My PC won't recognise it either.
Resetting it hasn't worked, the iPod updater won't run and all in all, this feels highly terminal.
    Any suggestions gratefully received.....

Try borrowing an AC adaptor wall charger for it and set it on that. Often the PC current wont be enough to charge it after its been let run down all the way. Secondly, try putting it into disk mode by resetting it then as soon as the screen goes blank, hold the centre and play/pause buttons until it goes to disk mode. Then open updater and connect ipod, and restore it. Failing that, the hard drive may have become disconnected. If you're game, open the case and see if everything looks to be ok, specifically lose wires and such. Hope this helps

  • Problems Restoring 2nd Gen. iPod w/ iTunes 7

Hello. I recently noticed that my second generation iPod was skipping songs and freezing a lot. I decided to do a complete restore to see if that would fix the problems. I connected the iPod and (using iTunes 7) went to restore the iPod. Once it downloaded the latest version of the iPod software, iTunes said it was restoring the iPod. I figured it would take a while. So after about 40 mintues I figured it had frozen or something so I unplugged it with the intention of restarting the computer and trying it again. However I guess it was still working because now when I try and turn the iPod on all I see is the apple logo. The computer will sometimes recognize it however it states that "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupt. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." When I click restore it tells me there's an error and it cannot finish restoring. So in retrospect it was stupid to unplug it. Is there anything I can do at this point. It isn't under warranty or anything and there would be no point in shipping it off to Apple (for that money I could just get a new one). Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have been having the EXACT same problem with my 3G, and it started with the iTunes 7, iPod updater 1.2 updates. Be aware that there are MANY others out there on this forum with the problems you are having... too many for me to believe that we all just happened to experience an iPod meltdown in the same way after the same iTunes update.
Anyway -- this morning I did a software update on my iMac, and now when I connected my iPod I did get the computer to recognize it. After reading that many others were having issues with the latest software, I did a restore on my iPod using the iPod updater from June of 2006, not the new one. (Try looking under Applications-Utilities-iPod updater to see if it happens to still be in your computer. If not, you can download it from Apple's site.)
I did successfully do a restore, but now I have connected to iTunes and am trying to reload all my music, and am not able to do so. It's stuck on one song, and I'm afraid to cancel it because this is what started my troubles a week ago.
But at least my computer recognizes that it is an iPod again.
I just wish Apple would post some solutions to this -- rather than letting more people like us download their bad software updates and kill their iPods.

  • HT1363 iPod classic meltdown

My iPod classic a few days ago stopped working and the screen said to restore. I did that but it still won't turn on. Fully charged and I've tried the Support section here but the iPod won't recognize the commands to get to disk mode. Instead it makes some scraping sounds or like static on a radio. It is no longer recognized by iTunes. Is there anything that can be done at home? Is there anything I can do at the store? Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the resultings numbers and we can verify what the next steps to take.

  • Ipod not recognized by windows or itunes

OK here's a humdinger: my ipod used to be recognized by my computer (meaning Windows XP), but then abruptly stopped in a catastrophic meltdown that completely wiped my ipod of everything -- didn't even show the menu. Fastforward, ipod is replaced. Windows will still not recognize it -- most of the time. The toolbar says USB device detected and hardware installed and ready to use, but the message that it's not recognized by Windows still appears. Now I said it was recognized sometimes. When it magically is (this is my only description for it because there is no apparent reason), and this is rare, usually after the computer has been turned off for awhile, the ipod will sync through about a fifth of my library then quit. The "disc cannot be found" message appears, and Windows stops recognizing and I'm back to square one. One would think that I now at least have a fifth of my songs on the ipod. Nope, just one for each time this has happened (being 2). Please do not respond with anything having to do with updating or uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, disabling USB 2.0, searching for E:\ drive, Windows Update, the whole appleipod.bat thing, updating itunes, or scanning for new hardware as I have tried these and a few other solutions. I'm just wondering if I'm completely, well, you know. Thanks for your time.

    dual 800 G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I had the same problem. And to think I actually HESITATED at installing the update. Oh wait... this happened AFTER the update. Funny how often that happens, eh? But I digress...
Anyway, I had two errors- initially the iPod stated my music library was somewhere else, and did I want to sync to that library. When I said yes, it reverted then to the "attempting to copy to disk"error. Further, iTunes showed that my iPod on the iTunes was EMPTY. However, my actual iPod hadn't lost any data. Confused yet? So am I.
*Last ditch effort- I went back in, and updated all my permissions, did a permission repair and then a permission verify.
    * Also did a disk verify on the iPod to make sure it wasn't sick.
*I also drug a new song into my library.
*Changed from the USB plugin to the firewire. (Although I did this earlier in the day, and hadn't seen a noticeble change)
    * Opened the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. (should have done that a few hours ago)
When my first pop up asked about did I want to sync to the mystery persons library, I said yes. (At the worst, I have all my music and could reimport all 30G of it, if necessary.) And immediately, the sync began, and began appropriately. However, it IS re-syncing every single song I had on the iPod to begin with.
I suspect something nasty happened in the iTunes update, ever since the intel thing happened, the updates have been a bit sketchy. I really like Apple products, but I've gone through 3 iPods due to software meltdowns, and it's a bit frustrating.
    Good luck!

  • ReInstallation of iTunes/iPod Updating

    Here's the deal:
My hard drive had to be replaced because of an unexpected meltdown. Luckily, I had all my songs on my ipod, so I didn't lose my music. However, now that I've installed iTunes onto my new hard drive and retrieved my purchased music from the iTunes store, I'm worried that when I plug in my iPod it will fill up with duplicated music because I want it to automatically update with new music when I plug it in. Is there any way to update my iPod with just new music that's not already on there?

Your music won't be duplicated, in automatic mode your iPod will be updated and whatever is on it will be replaced with what you now have in iTunes. However from the sound of it, that's quite different from what is actually on the iPod. If you want to keep what's on the iPod and use it with what is now a different iTunes to what you originally had, you would have to change the update setting to "manually manage songs and playlists" Managing Your Songs Manually Tutorial
If your iPod is set for automatic update and you want to change it to manual update then you'd need to prevent it auto-syncing if iTunes is different. Here are a few methods to do that:
While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (For anyone on a Mac, hold down Option and Command ⌥ and ⌘). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.
Another way is to connect your iPod and before it starts to sync, click the little X on the right hand side of the display beside the "Do Not Disconnect" message. The display is the little window to the right of the iTunes control buttons: iPod Interface
Or you could look at the method described in this link: How to keep iTunes from automatically updating your iPod
Go with whichever method you feel most comfortable. If at any point you are asked if you want to link your iPod to a new library, click No.

  • IPod Mini STILL dead, though appearing briefly as a zombie.

Way back on Dec 17, 2007, I wrote
"I have an iPod mini 4GB (Second Generation). It has performed without a hitch up until a couple weeks ago. It's usually left plugged in to its AC adaptor, but had been unpowered -- AND unplayed -- for a week. When I went to use it, I couldn't get anything to show up on the screen. I hooked it up to my PBG4, where it opened in iTunes looking absolutely normal, but no joy on the iPod screen itself. I could transfer songs back and forth between the iPod and iTunes on the PBG4. I tried charging on the AC power adapter. I did the "5Rs" (repeatedly). I dumped all the songs off the iPod and did a reset after doing the hold-button shuffle. Every once in a while, when I did the two-finger reset with the Menu and center buttons, I'd be rewarded with a briefly backlit (?) iPod screen, and once, a quickly-appearing-then-fading Apple logo. Other than those ghostly visitations, no joy whatsoever: the iPod still happily shows up in iTunes, but won't operate on it's own a-tall."
And there the matter rested, until two weeks ago. About 2 months back, I thought I'd try plugging the iPod Mini into the Power Adapter just for old times' sake. Nothing happened, despite another round or seven of the 5Rs, the 4H, and the Aztec 2-Step. I gave up and just left it there.
Imagine my gobsmacked astonishment, then, when 2 weeks ago, passing by the wretched thing, I happened to notice the "full-charge" battery icon on the display screen -- the first sign of life from the display screen since December of 2007. Could it be? I wondered? I hooked it up to my PBG4, and danged if it didn't open iTunes, allow me to add music (and update the software to 1.4.1), and when I disconnected, it played merrily away just as if the financial meltdown had never happened. "Hot diggity!" thought I, an Apple product that actually came back to life after its warranty had long since expired!"
For two weeks, everything was oojah-***-spiff, and I was rockin' out every day to some swell tunes... but yesterday, having done nothing different to it, the Mini once again went into suspended animation, with the exact same behaviors I detailed in December of '07. Once again I did the 5Rs, etc., and -- except for one brief and tantalizing glow of the Mini's display, which faded faster than the Cheshire Cat's grin -- the object seemed as lifeless as Rush Limbaugh's frontal lobe.
The thing still showed up in iTunes (the iPod, not Limbaugh. Brrrrrr....), so I bit the bullet and did a Restore. iTunes dutifully wiped everything out, and left me with the 1.4.1 software, but the iPod still gave no joy. I could put songs on it, but it would not play, period.
What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is a-goin' on here?
I'd really like to believe someone from Apple will read this, and actually be concerned enough to offer some constructive ideas other than the EAL (Endless Apple Litany) of "Buy a NEW one!" but I'm afraid I'm too old and too Mac-experienced (since my 1988 or '89 IIF) to really believe that will happen. Ahhh, the illusions of one's youth! How bitterly they sting in our Golden Years!
    Peace & Love
    Bart Brown

Not too sure, but it is the battery needs to be replaced, normally it run around 18 month before a new battery replaced

  • Using existing iPod to create library

I had a computer meltdown -- lost everything. Gave away most of the CDs for this iPod (I have 2). How can I "download" the music from the iPod to create a new library? HELP!

I too am looking for this answer, as an upgraded (name brand) internet security package re-wrote all my registry keys and I could not backup my existing iTunes library.
I had to use my recovery disks, and now iTunes will not let me transfer the 900+ songs etc to the updated library. Purchases - fine, everything else - forget it.

  • My luck + an Ipod = Absolute Disaster

Alright, so i have had an Ipod for over a year and a half now, and sine about three months into it, the Ipod began breaking down. It would do the whole "Sad Ipod" icon, i'd go through every single step there was, have to send it in, and they would send me back a refurbished one.
This process went one about once every couple months, and that was okay, because i had the Applecare plan on it. Well, that ran out in April, and as reliable as the changing of the seasons, the Ipod is broken AGAIN.
The process of complete meltdown goes as follows:
    Ian is listening to Ipod
Ipod freezes (can be up to hours) until Ian decides to reset it.
It resets, and turns back on with the Sad Face icon
Ian trys the reset process, disk mode and plugs the Ipod into computer, computer doesn't recognize Ipod, Ipod screen flips back to Apple logo, then goes back to the Sad Face.
this has never varied for me, and this would normally be the point where i take the Ipod to the store, they would tell me that "i should not illegally download anything" or "it's because i have the Ipod skin, and it affects the Ipod negatively" or "your Ipod is corrupt", etc.
The truth is, like i said, this hapens every few months, and i have friends that have downloaded THOUSANDS of songs, and there Ipods work just fine. I handle my computer and Ipod with the utmost care and safety, and have plenty of intelligence with computers.
But honestly, what is the effing problem?
I was planning on buying my first Mac in less than a month, but if it's goign to put me through the same problems as this Ipod, my commitment to Apple is beginning to go awry.
Any help with this epic trainwreck of mine? That would make my day.

sounds like a bad battery or one that isnt charging
    correctly.
have you tried charging on the wall plug?
an ipod will only trickle charge if you leave it
mounted on a usb port You have to un-mount it to get
a full charge (or wait like a month)
    try that
heh, as grateful as i am that someone finally posted a comment!...i have already been through that many a time. when i plug the Ipod in, what it does is start up with the Apple screen, take a little bit, then go back to the Sad Ipod face. Then it will shut off, and repeat the process over, and over, and overrrrr again. This goes on for as long as i feel like leaving it plugged in.
So thanks for the attempt!...but this question is still unsolved.

  • 30GB Ipod skipping/freezing

My 30Gb ipod is having a meltdown. It's decided that it doesn't want to play songs anymore. It can get 10seconds into a song then it starts to freeze up have trouble then skip to the next song and do the same thing. Sometimes it will get half way through a song before it does it or if i'm lucky it will actually play a whole song. I'm not sure how to fix this I'm thinking about doing a restore to factory settings. I did this last year when I had a different but equally serious problem. But I want to see if I can get more information before doing this as it's a last resort.

Since the release and update of iTunes 7, I have not faced any problem, but I heard a lot of articles from this forum about the errors 1417, 1418, 1428 and 50 etc. I could not make any suggestion and find a solution about it, all I could do is to copy some threads from some successful cases mentioned on this forum.
Until yesterday, I finally received a 4th Gen 20GB iPod (around 2 years old)from a friend and asked me whether I could fix it for him, which has been left untouched as a paper-weight for almost 2 months.
I tried to turn it on, and the screen was completed blank and the device looked dead. Before doing anything I prepared the following:-
    1. A window based PC
    2. A Mac computer
    3. An USB iPod cable
    4. A Firewire iPod cable
    5. An iPod AC charger
As the iPod was previously formatted on a PC, therefore I tried to plug it with a PC via USB cable, it did not response and not able to get recognized by the PC. I ejected the iPod and connected with an AC charger, after a few minutes, I did a Reset for the iPod
    How to reset iPod
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
The iPod showed an Apple sign, it stuck there for almost a minute, the screen then showed a battery with an exclamation mark sign, and after a minute, the iPod turned off itself. I was sure that the iPod carried very low battery, and could not be charged by connecting it with any computer (both Mac and PC).
I decided to let it have a charge with an AC charger for a bit longer, after 10 minute I did the Reset again, this time a sign of folder with exclamation mark showed up after the Apple sign, and again could not get recognized by a computer.
I changed my mind, and put the iPod into disk mode
    Putting iPod into disk mode
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Instead of connecting with a PC, I plug it with my Mac using a Firewire cable, it did not response, so I switched the cable to an USB, interestingly, the iPod got recognized and a window pop up indicating that the iPod needed to do a Restore. Therefore I clicked “Restore”, after a few seconds, an Error message pop-up with Error Message 1417, the sign that I have been waiting for quite sometime.
I ejected the iPod and the screen immediately showed a folder exclamation mark (a sign indicating a corrupted or a failure iPod OS). I am forced to put the iPod into disk mode again, connected with the Mac computer and open the Disk Utility
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
It managed to complete the Restore process, and started to sync with the iTunes. However, it got stuck at the song no.238 from the total of 2000. I left it for an hour, but with no process, instead the iPod became “Hot” and the iTunes showed an Error message of 1428. I ejected the iPod from my Mac computer, the iPod’s screen turn to show the famous killer icon;“The Sad iPod“.
This time it was totally dead, even failed to put it into Disk Mode and non of the computer could recognize it. Sigh, I hated to do it but I knew that I must did the following:-
Holding the iPod in my Palm, and hitting it on a surface of a Sofa with 5 attempts.
Did not surprise me, the iPod turned on and it showed the Language Menu on the screen. So, I put it into Disk Mode and connected with my window PC.
The PC showed a sign and indicated that an USB device had been connected with it. I opened the iTunes and did a Restore there.
However, an Error Message 50 showed up, but I were not worried about it, connected it back with my Mac computer with it in Disk Mode. As expected the iTunes opened and allowed me to do a Restore there.
This time it managed to complete the process and a window of register pop up. After the completed the process, the iPod started to sync with the iTunes again, which finally managed to complete the process.
I left it connecting with the AC charger overnight. In the next morning, I switched it on and have a play with it, I am so glad as it is working like a charm.
From the above experience, I would like to share it with the user the following:-
    1. It always better to charge with an ac charger instead of the computer, as when an iPod carrying with very low battery, it may not able to get charge from a computer
    2. Try to connect the iPod with a computer, switching between USB and Firewire
    3. Try to format an iPod with HD problem, with a different kind of computer e.g. Mac or PC, as the formats are totally different, the way it formats may able to solve the bad sectors on the HD
    4. It may get better chance to get your iPod recognized, if you put it in Disk Mode
I hope the following works in your case as I did.

  • Windows Vista: Ipod Error Message, no longer read by PCs

    Hello,
I have a 5th generation black ipod video with 30GB of memory.
The other day I hooked it up to my laptop (Toshiba, 4 months old) that it's been functioning on with no problems whatsoever. This weird error message flashed twice about it not being able to sync because of some software problem.
Eversince then, the only thing I can charge my ipod on is the family treadmill in the basement (~_~) as no other computer in the house recognizes it. I can't even charge it through the wall sockets, either.
I have changed the ipod cord, still no luck. I've also reset the device about 3 or 4 times and uninstalled, restarted the laptop then reinstalled itunes. I would like to reset it back to factory settings but that's impossible as computers/laptops don't pick it up. I live very far from a Mac store...
What's a girl to do? I can't live without my Busta Rhymes and Wu-Tang Clan!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
