Ipod memory

my ipod is 30 gig and i have 227 songs ang 37 photos and itunes said i have used 6.5 gig!!!!! how can u see whats taking up my ipods memory??? please help

It has to do with what file format you've imported the song as:
This was originally posted by the incredible Sparky the wUnderdog
"As a general principle, you can fit more CDs on your iPod if you encode at lower bitrates (making smaller files), but at the cost of audio quality. Lossless promises to capture all the data on the original CD (thus preserving quality) but coded so the file takes half the space. MP3 and AAC (an implementation of variable bit rate MP4) both eliminate some of the information on the CD in order to compress the digital recording into ever smaller files--the lower the bitrate, the smaller the file, but smaller files mean more information lost and consequent poorer sound quality.
iTunes's MP3 encoder is so-so; the LAME encoder is better at preserving sound fidelity to the original. AAC files ripped in iTunes certainly sound better than its MP3s, with audio quality close to the best LAME MP3s at higher bitrates. With the type of music I listen to most often, sound quality declines substantially as bitrates fall below 256kbps, but LAME or AAC @ 256kbps sounds pretty darned good, and at 320kbps LAME alt-preset-insane is amazingly faithful to the original. However many users claim that with the music they listen to they can't hear the difference between 192 or even 128 kbps files and the original CD source, so they naturally choose higher compression rates to fit more "songs" on their iPods.
CDs take approximately 10MB per minute of music; Apple lossless takes 5MB/minute; LAME insane takes 2.5MB/min; AAC or MP3 at 256kbps take 2MB/min; and iTunes Store files (AAC@128kbps) take 1MB/min. At these rates, a 20GB iPod (really 18.6GB) can hold anywhere from 30 hours to over 300 hours of music. (iPod marketers express this potential playback capacity as "songs," figuring 4 minutes per song--thus 300 hours at 128kbps = 4500 "songs.") You will need to listen to samples ripped with different bitrates and codecs to determine the optimum tradeoff point for you between quality & quantity. It's worth taking some time to do this at the start as it sure beats reripping everything in your collection 2 or 3 times to get it right later.
So far as convenience goes, nothing beats iTunes's one-step process. To change bitrate as you import from CD, go to the iTunes menu > Edit > Preferences, select the Importing tab, choose AAC or MP3 encoder in the "import using" selection box, then choose "Custom" in the "setting" box, and the window permitting bitrate selection will pop up. If you choose iTunes MP3 encoder, at least use VBR (variable bit rate) to maximize the sound quality. (VBR increases sample size as data complexity increases.)
If you would prefer LAME MP3s, fear not, for the easy-to-use CDex ripping software is a free download and requires only one simple extra step to get the files into iTunes for transfer to your iPod. Now if AAC sound quality is comparable to LAME MP3, you might wonder why you should even consider LAME: Because of portability to other devices. At present, hardly anything but iPods can read AACs or Apple Lossless, but almost everything reads MP3s. So if you plan to burn CDs of your compressed files for playback on your home or car CD player (for instance), it would be wise to choose MP3.
One other consideration specific to the iPod: It has a 32MB cache. If you choose a compression rate that results in large files (i.e. lossless), then the cache won't hold very much 'music' and the hard drive will have to spin up frequently to fill it, and that will shorten your battery life somewhat."

  • Problem with the iPod memory status colour bar in iTunes 7

    Hello
The iPod memory status bar in iTunes (the one with different colour bars that show the proportion of total memory filled by music, video, photos, other) says that 26gb of my 30gb iPod is filled, and 26gb is free. Clearly that cannot be the case as that's way over 100% of the iPod's memory. Resetting the iPod has not solved this problem as when I fill it back up with songs, videos etc this glitch returns. Can anyone help please?

  • I recently updated to Itunes 12.0.1.  Since then, the Music tab under my Ipod Touch does not give me the option to automatically use ITunes Match to sync all my music.  Now my Ipod memory is full, which is creating a problem.  How do I fix this?

I recently updated to Itunes 12.0.1.  Now, when I plug in my Ipod and go to the Music section, the Itunes Match option is unavailable.  Which means that my music is taking up too much memory on my Ipod Touch.  How do I re-enable the IMatch option so that my music will automatically be in the cloud?

    Hello pib1617,
iTunes Match can be enabled on your iPod Touch via Settings -> iTunes & App Store.
Turn on iTunes Match. Go to Settings > iTunes & App Store. Sign in if you haven’t already.

  • 30 GB video iPod memory question

Ok, I just got the 30 GB video iPod a few days ago. Before I bought it when I was looking at the specifications on the apple store, it said that it could hold 75 hours of video. I would like to know if this could possibly be correct, because when I looked at how much space just one sixteen minute film took up, it said it took up over 75 megabytes, and if this is how much space just one little movie takes up, than it must take up a whole gigabyte for something, say, 25 minutes long, so with the amount of space that videos take up,could they possibly still hold up to 75 hours?
    * Also, for anyone out there that might happen to know this, do any of y'all know how much memory a twenty episode TV show season (about twenty four minutes per episode) would take up?
    Dell   Windows XP

If a sixteen minute song takes up 75MB, it takes up 4.6875MB for each minute. Multiplying this figure by 60 gives you 281.25MB an hour, and continuing the calculation produces 21093.75MB for 75 hours, which works out to about 20.6GB. A 30GB iPod will have roughly 27.8GB of usable storage.
Calculating the length of a season with the same figures gives you 2250MB total.

  • Cleared info from IPOD - memory still taken?

I used my IPOD as a backup for a large amount of information. When I removed all of that information (Word documents, PDF files etc.....) from the IPOD, that space of memory didn't "come back" and the IPOD is therefore missing that memory.
Any suggestions how to get that memory back?

Try restoring the iPod to factory settings.

  • Can't get "deleted" podcasts to clear from usable ipod memory

My nano memory is nearly full -- every time I try to add podcasts downloaded to my computer I get an error message that the nano's too full, so I try to delete older podcasts on it by selecting them and pressing the "delete" key -- and indeed get a message that the file has been deleted-- but it doesn't free up new memory, according to the "available memory" bar. On the other hand when I delete a music file from the song library the exact same way, it does. Where are these "deleted" podcasts hiding on my ipod, and how can I get rid of them and free up new memory space?

No matter what I do I am not able to get podcasts
that are video to load to my ipod. These are pdcasts
that I am getting from I-tunes directly. Any help?
Can anyone please help? It won't synch. I got all of my video podcasts on itunes so I don't think they need to be converted. They are not loading at all. It ignores the folder I set up for them completely. I am very frustrated. I tried a reinstall and still not luck. PLEASE help! If it is a problem with my Ipod I would like to return it.

  • Ipod Memory Problem Please Help

Just checked my 60gb Ipod after 3 music library loses due to windows, and it is reading as only 55gb available space. Is this normal because I know with external hard drives you lose some memory due to opporating system info, but should I have lost 5gigs from a 60gig hard drive just for this info? Does anyone else have this problem? Is it normal?

mf: That sounds about right. It's accepted industry practice (sadly) to round up to the nearest big number when describing hard drive capacities. The iPod 60gig is after all a 55gig hard drive
I bought a Lacie Terrabyte drive on the weekend to discover that it's not 1,000meg but 939meg.....I expected to lose a few gig but a whopping 61.
So all you lost was a little over a top end Nano in capacity. I lost a whole top end 5G

  • Ios 5.0.1 ipod memory lost

after updateing to ios 5.01 my ipod showed it had 6.5gb after the update if went down to 5.5gb
the ipod rebooted and i was update afew apps that support the ios 5.01 then out of no where my ipod said it was running low on memory and can finish the downloads  but the ipod has 5.5gb i checked the about section and its also showen the ipod has 5.5gb
so i reset the ipod and after the reboot i lost 4.1gb the r estore tab on itunes is greyed outso i can't restore it
my computer has 72gb free space of drive 1 and 64 or a 2nd and an extenal drive for 2tb of memory so my computer has the memory for a back up and restore of the ipod
i have the new version of itunes on the computer
my other part of the ipod is now 10.3gb and cant get this to free up

A 3G and 4G iPod only has 256 MB of memory. Is is like the RAM incomputer compared withdisk space in computer and storage space in the iPod.
Frequenty with use the memoryon the iPod get used and when a app ends the memory does not get released for resuse.. Therefore, you can get a low memory warning.
To correct the problem double click the Home button and delete all or most of the apps that show in the bottom row.  Then power off and then back on the iPod.  That will make more memory available

  • 5th gen 60GB iPod memory

    Hi there,
Not sure if this is a silly question, but I've almost used the entire memory of my trusty 5th generation iPod. The thing is - I've a folder of a few images I'd like to add, and while my iPod says I have 66.2mb left and the folder I want to add is only 3.4mb; it won't add it when I try synching it in iTunes. The message I get is that there isn't enough memory on my iPod.
I've tried optimising the images further, but still no luck.
While it isn't worrying me as I plan to buy a new iPod when I get a new laptop, I am wondering why it won't let me use the remaining memory (it just seems like a waste).
Anyways, if anyone has any suggestions - that would be awesome.
    Thanks!

Where are you looking at the "Available Memory" for the iPod?
How are you determining the size of what you are trying to add?
How are you "Adding Photos"? Manual sync or automatic?

  • Increasing Ipod memory?

I have a 20 gig Ipod Video fith generation and like to put alot of videos on it rather than music. I have reached my maximum memory storage.
Rather than buying a new ipod is their any other way to increase the memory of my ipod?

It is not viable to increase memory in an iPod. For starters, the hard drives with more memory are bigger in size. Then, you would have to get a new case. Even if you managed to do this, the mainboard would probably not be able to use the hard drive because it has been "programmed" to use the hard drive it came with.

  • Is there anyway to upgrade my ipod memory?

so my ipod is only a 2gb is there anyways i can upgrade to a 4gb or something without buying a new one?
      Windows XP

There is no way to upgrade the size of your Nano drive, USB cord used or otherwise.
To get more memory you'd need to buy a new one. Apple give you 10% off a new iPod if you "trade in" your old one. However the easiest and cheapest way is to sell your old one on eBay and buy a new one with the money and a bit extra.
Other than that, your stuck with the model you have.

  • I'm not connected to the internet on my iPod but my brother is in the same room with his and he has internet. It wont let  me join. Is this because my iPod memory is nearly full ? What can I do ? and b.t.w. the internet is working.

My brother is connected to my house's wifi on his ipod but i cant connect. We both have 4th generation iPods and are sitting in the room with the router. Its saying there is no internet connectuon available when , there clearly is. Please help me figure out why this is happening and what i  can do to have internet again!

Does the iPod connect to other networks?
Does the iPod see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
    Did the iPod connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • "Other" space being used in iPod memory ...

i have been trying to sync about 2.5 gigs of audio to my iPod (it's a second gen. 4 gig). every time i try, the screen shows about 1.3 gigs being taken up by "other" files. i have no idea what these files are, how they got there, or how to get rid of them. does anyone have any ideas or tips?

Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware etc. or files that are on there if you are using the iPod as a removable storage device. If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • My Library and iPod Memory Doesnt Match... PLEASE HELP

When my iTunes is open and my library is highlighted, it says "720 songs, 2.87 GB. Then when my iPod is plugged in and i highlight that, it says 13.87 GB Used, 14.71 GB Free. How can half my 30GB iPod say its half used when there is only 2.87GB of songs? I do have album covers but that shouldn't take up that much room and I have no videos or pictures on it. If anyone knows please let me know. Thanks!!

  • IPOD MEMORY IS MESSED UP

I have the 30gb IPOD and I only have songs on itunes and on my ipod. I only have about 5 or 6 gigs worth of songs on the ipod but it says i only have 3 gigs remaining on my ipod. I did try to put videos on my ipod awhile ago and they didnt work but now they arent in itunes or on my ipod. Any ideas why i dont have all 30gigs to use would be great.

Is there a chance that anyone else use your iPod as a hard drive? You iPod may be used like a USB flash drive. Click on the iPod icon on your desktop and see if there is any other big files that took almost 20 GB.
