Ipod mini 2nd gen: clicking noise when plugged in only

My mini just makes clicking noises when I plug it into the usb port. I thought it was the hard drive after reading tons of posts about the clicking noise, and got a compact flash replacement but it is still clicking. I dont think it is the battery. If it was, it should hold some sort of charge shouldnt it?
What could be causing it?
Is my mini out of whack? I did drop it before it died 2 years ago, but it worked for quite a few months after dropping it though. I just got around to working on it now cuz I miss it.

thanks for the reply. well changing the hard drive was easy. it might be the battery. it did give me some errors before it crapped out. i just dont remember what those were. i think it was an apple with a lightning over it, which would indicate a bad battery i suppose. i will try to change the battery and see how that goes. i just cant troubleshoot since nothing comes on, except for a faint clicking noise when it's hooked up to the usb.

My laptop does not detect my ipod mini (2nd gen 1 gb), when i connect it the orange light flashe 2 or 3 times then nothing happens. if ever that it will be detected by my laptop and when i sync music on it there will be an error and itunes will suggest to restore it to its factory setting and if i choose to restore it error 3194 happens. so my top priority of course is for it to be detected then fix the latter. please help any will be much appreciated

This is an Answer for a Possible Solution. It worked for me and is still working. The issue I was having with my 64 bit vista, was Apple Mobile Device Service was not being installed, I dont know why. But I disabled any active running program through MSCONFIG, to allow a clean uninterrupted install of ITUNES 8.02. This allowed AMDS and drives from ITUNES to install. Hope this works for most of you.
APPLE, please review your Support Methods. Re-installing doesnt help an issue that resulted from installing.

Yes, your battery is likely toast and in need of replacement.  Not much else for troubleshooting here.  Sorry.

  • How to resolve error 1437 on ipod mini 2nd gen

Hi, my ipod mini 2nd gen 6gb is not working properly.  I had to reset it as my file was corrupted.  However, after
I have reset it, i kept on getting a response such as "the itunes software is not properly installed..not communicating with ipod device,
reinstall your itunes".  I had to remove and reinstall itunes again and again, but I kept on getting the same reponse whenever I try to
sync my ipod with my computer.  It is also taking a long time for the computer to recognize my ipod mini.
Until now the problem is not yet resolved.  Now Im using another computer, and the error that came out --after resetting it again--is
error 1437.  I am in the dark as to what is the actual problem.  Appreciate any help. Thanks.

Turn off Notifications and turn off BlueTooth if you don't use it. If you really need to, you can turn WiFi off as well.
Depending on how often you check e-mail, WiFi will turn back on to do that.

  • I can't get my ipod classic (120GB) to work. I am getting error code 1434, and the ipod is making a lot of clicking noises when plugged in

After coming back from Hawaii, my Ipod classic doesn't work anymore. When plugged into itunes, it says that it may be corrupt, and that I need to restore it. I have tried this, but everytime it gives me an error code of 1434. When I click more information, it sends me to a support page, but not for error code 1434. I tried all of the steps on the page hoping that it would help. Also my ipod is making  a lot of clicking noises when it is trying to run, alomst as if it is skipping inside and can't fully run. Can anyone help me ?

Clicking sounds from an iPod that has a hard drive for storage is not a good thing.  It usually means the hard drive is faulty.  That is the likely reason for getting an error during the attempt to Restore.
If you use a Mac, you can try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363
If it goes into Disk Mode, connect the iPod and instead of running iTunes, run Disk Utility.  Does the iPod appear in the Disk Utility sidebar?  If it does, select the iPod device in the sidebar, not the volume indented below the device (if there is one).  Go to the Erase tab.  Set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Name does not matter.  Click on Security Options and choose to write a single pass of zeros over the entire disk.  This serves as a good "stress test" for the iPod's hard drive.  Back on the main window, click Erase.
This takes longer than a regular erase, but you should see steady progress.  If it errors out, or stalls for a LONG time (like hours), the hard drive is likely to be faulty.
If it completes successfully, quit Disk Utility, run iTunes and try to do another Restore

  • I was downloading updates for ipod touch 2nd gen and twice when I was to processing files stage it clicked off. There was no message on whether it was done or what I was to do next. I needed to reset the ipod. Now what do I do?

I was downloading updates for Ipod touch 2nd gen and when the process was to the processing files point the screen changed and I wasn't given any idea as to whether the process was complete or not and if it was what was to be done next. I needed to reset the Ipod and now I am wondering what to do . Spend another Hour downloading and whatever amount on processing files and end up where I am now . Whats the next step in finding out what to do? This was the second attempt to do this with the first try happening the same except I am not sure how long the processing files part was.. Any suggestions as to what to try will be greatly appreciated.. Thanks

Likely a batter problem since high temperatures destroy a battery.  I wold make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store to see what they say.  It is free except for your time.

  • External Power adapter won't charge iPod Mini 2nd Gen

I just bought a 3rd party external power adapter and car charge cable for my iPod mind 2nd gen. Neither one seems to work. The only way I can charge it is via my USB connection. Should 3rd party adapters work or do I need a special one? Should there be an icon on the screen if the adapter is working? Thanks for any help.

    Try an SMC reset:

  • Ipod Shuffle 2nd gen - no lights when using mains charger

Am going on hols shortly so bought a mains charger for my shuffle - when I plug it in, the orange light flashes and then goes off - shouldn't it stay on constant orange then turn green when it's charged? it did the same with both mine and my partner's ipod and I know mine needed some charging.

Purchased a generic USB charger today. After connection LED light on ipod flashed thrice (orange) and then LED switched off automatically. Tested the voltage out put through dock pins and compared with another mains charger (Apple certified) which works. Voltage at the two data pins (Top 2) showed +3 V in the charger(that works) but 0 V on the chager which did not work. The other two pin (bottom +ve, next -ve) showed +5 V and 0V respectively on both the charger. My conclusion is that the data pin connections for shuffle might be different for some reason. Any body knows anything about it. In Google I fount one picture which showed that there is a circuit board within the dock. The Dock for Shuffle 2nd Gen is not just a USB to 3.5mm connector.

  • Why does my ipod touch 5th gen not charge when plugged into my computer? (it keeps stuttering(lightning symbol next to bettery goes on and off literally every second))

so I have my ipod touch 5th gen connect and the little lightning symbol, next to the battery on the top left, keeps flashing on and off every second. I don't know what to do and also it doesn't show up on iTunes.

Hey Ed, Try trouble shooting 101. Do you have a different cable and/or charging device? If so, try the different cable first, then a different charging device. If the problem goes away, I'd say it's the cable, replace it. If with in 1 from date of purchase, Apple will replace for free if the cable is found to be defective. If the problem continues with a different cable or a different charging device, then the problem is with your iPod. With a strong light and a magnifying glass look in the iPod's charging port. Your looking for damage in and around the port. Is the port lose? (shouldn't be). Are pieces missing or damaged? Bent or damaged contact pins can do what you describe. Foreign debris, namely pocket lint or corrosion can also cause charging issues. If you see something like lint, try to blow it out, or if you must use a non-conductive probe, I find a round wooden toothpick works well to carefully remove the lint from the bottom of the port. Just be careful to not touch, bend or damage the gold contact pins on the long side of the port. Also make sure the locking pins on the short ends (looks like two silver bumps, one on each end) of the port are free to move. If you find corrosion, try plugging / unplugging about 12 times to clean the contacts off. If you must use a cotton swab cut to fit, with a drop of 91% isopropyl alcohol on it, you want it damp, not wet, then plug it in and out until the swab comes out clean. You will most likely need several swabs. If you find nothing physically wrong, then try resetting your iPod. If that does not work, restore from backup, last resort, make a backup then restore to new, a full factory restore. If issue continues see your Apple store and have it evaluated for a possible hardware issue. But start with a different or new cable. Good luck, Cheers.

  • IPod Shuffle 2nd Gen, blinks 3 times and stops (Only connected to power outlet))

Its a iPod Shuffle 2nd generation of 1GB. When I connect it to a power outlet via Apple's USB Adapter, it blinks 3 times and then it stops until I reconnect it again (reconnecting leads to the same thing). When I turn it on, it functions normally. I haven't used it in a long time ago, but I connected it a long time to iTunes to pass songs and when I turn it on it'
When I connect it to iTunes, it's the same, but iTunes recognizes it as a non-problem iPod. It even charges connected to iTunes (but it only blinks 3 times after connecting it and it's over, but keeps connected)
I think it even charges with iTunes, i can copy songs and everything. But I don't want to be stuck at a computer every time i need to charge

  • Unknown error (-36), iPod mini thinks it's 'full' when it's only half-full!

Great site - I have discovered that lots of people have similar problems to me, but none are specifically the same as mine, hence I am posting a new topic. Sorry if this has appeared earlier........
This is driving me crazy. Last week I put a new album onto iTunes and when I connected my iPod mini (6GB), it wouldn't upload from iTunes to it. I thought it may be because my iPod was almost full up, so I deleted another album to make space for the new one. Still nothing happened. By now I knew I had space on the iPod, but the new album would still not go on. I figured I had to update my iPod, so I installed the latest update (1.4.1.) and the latest iTunes. Now, whenever I connect my iPod, it loads about half of my iTunes (it never stops at exactly the same place) onto my iPod, gets to about 2.9GB then flashes up one of 2 messages -
    1. 'The disk cannot be read or written to', or
    2. ' The iPod """ could not be written to. Unknown error (-36)
I have uninstalled the new updates, restored my iPod and re-installed the software that came in the box when I bought my iPod last May, in effect putting my iPod onto my PC for the very first time. But I am still having the same problems. This is very frustrating. Can you help?
Any solutions/help will be gratefully received.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the reply.
I've been on this page already, but it doesn't really help me. I thought my problem would be a common one that was fairly easy to fix, but it's begining to like unlikely.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • IPod Shuffle (2nd gen) Locked Up When Docked

I use Windows Vista and am having problems with my 2nd Generation Shuffle. ITunes appears to work fine until I dock my shuffle. As soon as the shuffle is docked, ITunes freezes (locks up) and the orange light on my shuffle blinks continuously. The message screen in ITunes reads: "Syncing Ipod Do not disconnect".
Because ITunes is frozen, I cannot restore my shuffle.
I reviewed other posts. One post included a "repair" but the repair was not compatible with Vista.
    Any suggestions?

I figured it out. Unfortunately, the problem stems from a bad sector in the shuffle. In order to fix it, the shuffle must be restored to its factory settings. Because the shuffle locks your computer up when docked, you need to use a different computer in order to fix the shuffle. Once you dock the shuffle into another computer, you can following the retore directions that are in the shuffle handbook (viewed on-line). After the shuffle has been restored to its factory settings, you can dock it into your original computer and reload all of your songs.
This fix is frustrating because it requires that you find another computer. Apple should create a restore program that is Vista compatible so that one can simply go on-line and download the fix rathen than having to fix the problem through ITunes.

  • My ipod touch 2nd gen gets stuck when updating ios 4.2

I can download the update, but it gets stuck when backing up the itouch.  Any suggestions?

It's not supposed to. You need a newer device to use applications which require iOS 4.3 or above.

  • IPod mini 1st gen 4gb

I have an iPod mini 1st gen 4gb. When I click the wheel to advance to the next song nothing happens. The wheel works fine otherwise. I have reset and restored the iPod several times. What am I not doing?

    Robert,
Besides the scrolling feature built into the click-wheel, there is a microswitch button for each function.  In other words, Menu, Forwards, Backwards, Play/Pause and Center Button each have their own switch that’s activated when you press that part of the wheel.
It’s possible that the switch for the Forward function has failed.  Does that button work in ANY menu area.  Do the other buttons work?  If you’re in the middle of an album, can you go backwards in the list of songs?
I was just working on the click-wheel on one of my Mini a couple of days ago.  I bought a used one and the prev other had some kind of decal over the scroll and the adhesive virtually glued the center button to the rest of the wheel.
Hopefully, it’s just the Mini’s click-wheels are they’re available on eBay for about $10 and can be user-replaced, if you’re VERY careful.
I also have an old 1st gen Mini that could be a parts donor and could do this for you.  I could also replace the harddrive with a 32gb Compact Flash card and new battery  while the Mini is opened, if your interested.  I’ve done a BUNCH of those and they work great.  I'm even selling one of them on eBay now.
