Ipod mini being really stupid.

okay, so i bought an ipod mini from a friend for really cheap.
she never had any problems with it.
which i first got it, i noticed that whenever i started a song, it would automatically skip to the next song, which was weird but a minor annoyance.
shortly after, it froze in mid song, which was terrible, as i was new to ipods, but with the aid of my wife, we figured out how to reset it, etc. so that was fine.
but ever since then, it has been acting really funny. i have to plug it up and un plug it a few times to get it to start charging, its not recognized by my apple itunes, and sometimes (after ejecting it properly) it messes up and the apple sign comes up. resetting it wouldnt be the biggest bother, but now i have to do the whole "menu+center key" thing about 30-40 times before it works again. still, that was only happening once every two weeks, so i thought better of it.
but now, i have gotten the "ipod sad face" icon, as well as the apple. and usually i could at least get it to charge. but now nothing. i am really strapped for cash but i dont feel like i can go on without an ipod now that i have had one! any suggesstions?

Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
Intermediate Level
A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2364921&#2364921
Advance Level
A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
Last Resort Level
1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

I can't manage to change the page layout of my document - to switch betwen landscape and portrait pages. I've tried putting every break in it possible.
I know I am being really stupid, but I'm tearing my hair out (hence posting for the first time ever on a forum!)......any tips?!

Every Mac comes with Preview .app in your Applications folder.
You open multiple pdfs in Preview :
+Menu > View > Sidebar > Show Sidebar > click on the thumbnail icon (little black squares) at the bottom of the sidebar+
You can drag the thumbnails of your individual or more pages from one .pdf sidebar to the other or to or from the desktop.
In Pages select an object, textbox, shape or table, by holding down the command key and clicking on the object edge.
You can drag the corner around by again holding the command key down whilst pointing near a corner. The cursor turns into a curved arrow, drag the object around.
    Alternatively:
    +Inspector > Metrics > Rotate+

  • I'm probably being really stupid here, but I don't want my itunes library on my PC to sync/match exactly with my ipod touch, as it's only an 8gb one and I haven't got room on it for everything in my itunes library. I want to simply move stuff on and off

I'm probably being really dumb, but I can't work out how to remove music/vids etc from my ipod but retain them in my itunes library on my PC . I haven't got room for everything on my 8gb ipod touch. I just want to put stuff on there when I want to watch/listen to it. If it get's full I want to just take it off but put it back on at a later date. My ipod touch is new - I had an older generation ipod before and didn't have a problem with this. Is it because I have signed up to icloud or something? If so, how can I change it?

You can manually manage or you can sync by playlist/artist/album/genre/checked songs.
Maybe you should read the manual:

  • Stupid questions on the ipod mini.....

I have an old ipod mini from 6 years ago.  I haven't used it since I got it.  Since I'm going to work out, I wanted to take it and listen while I'm exercising....
    Stupid question number one
    1. Can you hear music without using earphones?  Or do you have to use a docking system????  Is everything with head/earphones?
    2. The earphones that came with it, fall out of my ears..... what gives?  Can anyone make a suggestion about headphones that you don't have to stick in the ear canal... but aren't cumbersome????  I need some suggestions, else the whole ipod experience is a waste
    3.  am I stupid for staying with a vintage ipod mini, instead of getting an ipod touch or traditional ipod that's newer?  Are they easier to use?
All I really do is make playlists on itunes, and maybe a short download of a radio show or something like that.....  What's the advantages of Ipod touch vs traditional Ipods?

    1.  No.  You can hook it up to a docking station or use headphones/earbuds.
    2.  Everybody's ears are shaped different and so a one size doesn't fit all.   I don't have any particular suggestions though.  I would look on Amazon's site for an extensive list of possibilities.
    3.  Not at all.  If it still works, why quit using it or buy a new one?  Wouldn't make any sense!  The advantage of the iPod Touch is that it has much more capability compared to other models in that it can download and play Apps as well as a number of other things.

  • Ipod min has stopped being recognised

My ipod mini was installed on my windows XP and tunes bought/downloaded from itunes. Six months later and computer has stopped recognising ipod. Message says to "reset" or "restore" and only the restore option (with subsequent loss of songs) can be activated.
Need suggestions to ensure that original PC recognises ipod.
Posible cause of problem: ipod was connected to a Mac to download songs from a friend's itunes (no songs bought).
    Thanks!

I have now removed and re-installed every piece of Apple Software on my laptop. I assume this would result in the drivers being re-installed.
However, when I plug the iPOD in a message comes up 'Installing Device Drivers'. Then a message comes up that they are installed successfully, but it does also say 'Searching folders for preconfigured drivers...'. After 10 mins I assumed this did not mean anything and closed the window.
It is not convenient for me to check the other computer's drivers. Anyway, the iPOD used to work on this computer. The only thing I have done on this computer re device drivers is to start using a USB mouse (which installed drivers) and I also checked them all for updates. Only the Intel ones updated.
Needless to say the iPOD is still unrecognised in iTunes.
    Any further help much appreciated.

  • The iPod "TAMI DUGARD's iPod" cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the selected items (additional 146.5 MB required). this was from my ipod mini trying to sync and it wont let me sync so... could u help me i really needit

I really need help because my ipod mini isnt working correctly my mom just gave it to me and The iPod “TAMI DUGARD’s iPod” cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the selected items (additional 146.5 MB required). it says this. Over and over when i try to sync it too my itunes what does this mean and its a 4gb

It means you try to sync an amount of content to your iPod Mini that exceeds for 4 GB, or the amount of space that is available on the iPod.  See this article for more details.

  • Ipod mini not being recognised!

My ipod mini is all of a sudden not being recognised on i-tunes. I have tried using a different cable, different pc etc etc.
    What happened!

when I turned on my ipod mini today, a sad face with an exclamation point came up! I haven't used it for about 3 weeks and thought it was a battery discharge problem. Before I connected it to my laptop, I update the iTunes software and as soon as I connect the iPod, the sad face comes up again, followed by a few seconds of the frozen battery and then blank! I tried restoring but can't put in in Disk Mode.
Any idea what can be happening?

  • Only ipod mini can be charged with supplied usb cable? ..Really?

I just read in fine print in an obscure part of support site that only the ipod mini can be charged with the "supplied" cable? Is this true? No, come on really? But, I...I,I,I just paid 500 clams for the top of the line shiznit and it doesn't come with any kind of charger? Is apple gonna send me back to the store? No way,I thought apple was down for the little guy...I gotta go buy an A/C charger? 30 more duckets?

    welcome to the forums!
your ipod doesnt need a power ac cable. Every time you connect ur ipod to your pc, it should start charging the batterie auto matically. Just leave your pc on all night long with the ipod connected, and in the morning your good to go!

  • How do I transfer songs from my ipod mini to my computer or to my itunes library? Songs/playlists show up as being on ipod but cant move to itunes library.

How do I transfer songs from my ipod mini to either my computer or to my itunes library.

    Hello Christopher,
There are 2 ways to go about this.  One is to use the manual method which is a little different depending on whether or not you use a Mac or a PC or you can opt to use a 3rd party software that can help you accomplish the task as well.  See this older thread for a list of possible software you could use.

  • Stupid iPod mini's!

Alright here's the deal...When I had connected my iPod mini to charge the battery, a dialog box came up, and it read that I needed to update software blah blah blah...so I did. I even updated iTunes. The whole sha bang bang...Well, now my iPod mini doesn't work, lost all my songs on it. iTunes doesn't have it on the source list. When i go to edit, preferences, iPod tab, it says iPod not connected. ***?? AND it doesn't stop there. I had to reboot, reinstall quicktime, deleted itunes 6, and had to reinstall it from the cd that came with the package. So when I open iTunes a dialog box comes up and it says: "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software." Whoa...how much more of this crap do I have to go through just to listen to my songs?
Never again will I purchase any CRAP from apple!

Can't see your iPod in iTunes: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61771
Does your iPod even turn on? I believe once your iPod is recognized in your iTunes you can download all your songs back into it, as long as they are in your iTunes of course. Try to re-install iTunes again.
I don't understand why so many people have problems with updates, I got an iPod Nano and a Mini; never as of today have I ever had a problem with either one.

  • IPod touch 4G being really slow???

Is my iPod touch 4th Generation White 32GB just getting old? My iPod is becoming really slow and is crashing a lot! Is it because of my A4 chip becoming "Outdated" and does this mean I just have to upgrade my iPod touch 4G to a 5G?

The 5G is better since it has a duel-core processor and twice the memory, 512 MB vice 256.
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Double click the Home betton and delete all the apps from the recently used dock
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Stupid itunes wont go on ipod mini!

Hiya I recently reinstalled my computer so saved all my itunes onto an external harddrive. When i moved them back over to my comp and plugged my ipod mini in to charge and update it has deleted most of my bought tracks (from the store) and wont now put them back onto my ipod. They appear in my library but when it updates my ipod it says i dont have authority or permission to install them onto my pod! Any ideas how i can get them back on as its annoying as I dont want to pay for them again when they are there! Its an ipod mini that i have. Would it be because they are still saved seperately in a folder? Thanks in advance

b noir's suggestion is the first line of defense. In the process of redoing your computer it might have become de-authorized.
The other possible problem is that when you reinstalled everything you installed an updated version of iTunes that requires you also update your iPod. So if playing one of your iTS doesn't do the trick, download the latest iPod updater and use it.

  • IPod mini seen on desktop, not in iTunes

The iPod is fully charged, I have reset it about 4 times, I've restarted my computer, and I've done everything else detailed here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/695939?start=0&tstart=0
(though one of the messages is for a Windows computer)
I am on a MacBook running OS X (10.6.8) - as much as my MacBook, bought in 2007, can handle.
My ipod mini has always worked just fine with my MacBook. But now:
It shows up on the desktop when i plug it in
It shows the "do not disonnect" screen (as it should)
It does NOT show up in iTunes
What's changed between the time the iPod worked with iTunes and now:
I was playing it while I thought I was charging it, but hadn't plugged it in properly. It shut down - and all of my music on it was erased
I went from OS X 10.4 all the way to OS X (10.6.8)
I've updated iTunes several times since then (really, does a week go by when iTunes *isn't* updated?
So.... other ideas not already named at
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/695939?start=0&tstart=0
I also have an iBook clamshell running OS 9, with the last version of iTunes that would work on such, but it doesn't work on that - and from what I've read, it never did work on OS 9.

"Have you tried doing a Reset... while it is connected (with docking cable) to the Mac that is running iTunes?"
Yes. Three times. Like I said - I've tried everything detailed here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/695939?start=0&tstart=0
"Since this is an old iPod mini, do you use USB or FireWire to connect it.  It should work with either, but it may work better with FireWire (if you have a FireWire docking cable)."
No FireWire docking cable for the iPod (frown)
"Does the iPod mini still work properly when it is disconnected?  Charges, plays songs, displays its screens and menus..."
Yes - although, as I said, all music is gone. But otherwise, it works just fine.
"doing a low level reformat of the iPod's storage disk using Disk Utility. "
Looked hopeful! But... got an error. Tried it a couple of times... in fact, every time iTunes starts up when I plug in my iPod (and it always does, even if it won't show my iPod mini on the left side), I get an error saying.... something about not being able to fix the device...
I'm wondering if I should try an alternative to iTunes and see if *that* can see the iPod mini...
Thanks, Kenichi Watanabe and planb77, for trying. It's appreciated.
