IPOD mini click wheel not  functioning

My IPOD mini click wheel is not working. When I attach to my PC, Itunes recognizes it, is able to read the hard drive/play music off the IPOD. I have tried to restore it, the drive is erased, but the click wheel still does not work. I am unable to reset the Mini using the click wheel. Itunes says my software is the most recent.
thanks

Mine does the same, I can get it to work by taking off the bottom plastic part of the Ipod Mini and pulling the metal thing out a bit.

  • IPod mini click wheel not working

Tuesday i was listening to my ipod and it worked just fine. the click wheel was working and everything was okay. i put it on my ihome to charge that night and left it there until i got home from school the next day. it worked fine in the morning(wednesday) when my alarm went off. wednesday night i took it off my i home and my click did not work at all. the buttons work but i can't scroll thru my songs or change the volume. it still has it's original battery so i know that's not what could have damaged it. between the time that it did work and the time i discovered it didn't it was not dropped or exposed to any extremes. i have reset it several times and restored to the factory setting and nothing has worked. please help!! i have had it for almost 2 years so it's out of warranty. is there anything i can do to fix it myself? i don't have the money to service it.

Hi to both of you, and welcome to Apple Discussions!
Well, if resets and restores are not helping, the clickwheel is malfunctioning. If you don't have the money to have Apple service it, would you be able to buy a new part?
If you can't buy a new part... Your only option is to open the bottom of the mini, slide the clickwheel out, dissasemble the clickwheel, put it back together, and reconnect it. It may sound like a lot, but it's pretty easy. I've had to do it on my blue mini, but realize that this may not solve the problem and if it does, last forever. I finally had to get a new clickwheel. Visit: theipodmini.blogspot.com for instructions, which is my site dedicated to the mini.

  • Ipod mini click wheel not qorking

it works fine in its dock and on the pc but when i try to use the click wheel its does not work

    Hi a.c.e.,
To reset an iPod (resetting your iPod simply restarts it):
First, toggle your iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a couple of times.
Then, press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for 5-10 seconds.
You might need to try this several times. Also, for more effect, try connecting your iPod to a power source (like your computer or a wall charger, if available) while you reset the iPod.
If several attempts at resetting your iPod don't help with this issue, then you could also try a restore.
For instructions on how to restore an iPod, see this article:
    Restoring iPod to factory settings
(Note that restoring your iPod to factory settings will delete all of the contents off your iPod, unlike resetting, which does not delete your songs).

  • Ipod mini click wheel works only when charging

my ipod mini click wheel will only work 100% when it is charging and is recognized by itunes. if a computer does not have itunes it will not work properly and also when it is not charging and i am just using it normally it wont work either. when it is not working right this is what it does: only the forward and play/pause and select work on the click wheel. cant adjust volume or go back to menu. but when charging and in itunes that click wheel works perfect!?!
can anyone help me figure this one out?
Also, the battery is really weak, it will only run for about 1hr on full charge. i dont know if that will affect it but if it does please let me know.
    Thanks

  • IPod with click wheel not recognized by computer and doesn't show up in itunes. Have went through all the suggested tips and its not the cable.

ipod with click wheel not recognized on two separate laptops. Checked the cable and newer ipod shuffle works fine.  Ipod will play already loaded music and play from a dock.  Have went through the 5Rs and still not working. Any help appreciated.

Checked the cable and newer ipod shuffle works fine.
You're not trying to connect the iPod with click wheel using the short USB cable for the iPod shuffle, are you?  If so, that won't work.  The shuffle uses its headphone jack for the data connection.  All other iPods use the dock connector, using a standard docking cable.

  • Ipod mini click wheel

I bought my ipod mini in june, and by mid july, the click wheel all of a sudden was at an angle, i mean the wheel itself was slanting to the left, towards the back track button. I never put much, or any force on my ipod mini click wheel, especially since it was my pride and joy, and so new at the time...anyone know why this happens, or how, or has it happened to anyone else other than me?...
    Thank you.

  • Ipod nano click wheel not responding

Take the iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

  • Defective ipod mini click wheel

I have a 2nd generation Ipod Mini that I purchased in July. Its been fine untill christmas morning when the click wheel became stuck! The lower left side part of the click wheel (the rewind and part of the play feature) doesnt budge. I had experienced a defect with the click wheel when I had my first ipod (a 1st generation ipod mini) and the upper part of the click wheel one day got stuck, but when I pressed on the bottom part it was able to loosen the top and it was fixed. However this is not the case with this one, i cant press it at all. Im still under warrantee. Any suggestions?

  • IPod nano click wheel not working

I have a 1st generation iPod nano. My click/scroll wheel is not working. I origianally thought that my iPod was frozen, but I'm almost positive now that it is the click wheel. I have restarted it several times by holding down the menu and circle button. Also, I was able to sync it using my iTunes, so I'm pretty sure it's the click wheel. Is there any way to fix this? Any help is apreciated!

Not a harddrive problem, there isn't one in the Nano, a hardware problem.
If you are the DIY type you can go to http://www.ifixit.com and there are pictures to show you how to disassemble your iPod so you can see if it is a loose connection.
If you'd rather not take it apart yourself there are 3rd party sites, such as http://www.iresq.com and http://www.ipodmods.com as well as ifixit that work on iPods. You can use Google to find more.
I am assuming your iPod is out of warranty.

  • Ipod 4g click wheel not working

ive been reading that i need to reset it but the problem is that the click wheel / buttons dont work so if they dont work how do i reset the ipod?

Similar problem-although it may be of my own doing. I just replaced the battery in my 3g 10gig ipod. Now the controls don't work. Nothing-not the click wheel, nor any of the buttons. I accidentally stabbed the copper encasement that surrounds the headphone jack at the top of the unit when I opened it, but that can't be the reason for the dead controls, can it? The hold switch still causes the display to come alive when I toggle it. The battery works because the display works when its not plugged in. The hard drive works because I just synched it with iTunes. I tried a hard reset, but nothing because the controls don't work.

  • I have a 4th generation ipod classic (click wheel) and it's giving me a sad ipod error as well as not mounting in itunes... I hear a clicking inside when it is connected to power but nothing is working. Help!

I have a 4th generation ipod classic (click wheel) and it's giving me a sad ipod error as well as not mounting in itunes... I hear a clicking inside when it is connected to power but nothing is working. Help!

You won't believe this but a friend of mine (who happens to be an Apple Genius) told me to put a towel or cloth on a sturdy countertop (I know this may sound weird) but hold the selct button (in the center) and menu part of the wheel at the same time until an Apple logo comes up on the screen and then quickly turn the ipod on it's side and wack it on the counter where the towel is so as not to damage anything cosmetically. It seems the clicking is the hard drive reader is stuck and this dislodges it. Mine works now (no clicking) and all seems to be well again. Who knew?

  • Ipod with click wheel. Windows displays device not recognized problem.

I'm using a ipod with click wheel, and hooking it up through a usb 2.0 port with the stock cable.
I keep getting a device not recognized message from windows, and the itunes software 8.xxxx does not recognize it even in diagnostics tests. Everything else is pass, except the ipod recognition.
The battery needs to be charged, and is depleted but its not recieving a charge when plugged into the computer.
Does anyone have a solution to this?

If the iPod is not getting a charge through the cable (and the battery is depleted), it may not be recognized because the iPod has no power to do anything.
I would say the problem is either a faulty dock connector on the iPod, a faulty cable, or a faulty USB port on the computer. You have probably tested the USB port possibility already by trying a different port (or trying another USB device on the same port), so I would try a different USB docking cable as the next test.

  • IPod with click wheel - will not restore

    Hi all,
I know I've got the dinosaur of the iPods, but hey. I have a 20g iPod with click wheel. Every time I load up iTunes with the iPod plugged into the PC, iTunes tells me that my iPod is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. (Not sure how that happened, but anyway.) So, I tell it to restore, then plug it into the external power supply as it tells me to do. However, when it is finished restoring, and I plug it back into the PC to reload the songs from iTunes, the cycle starts again. I have restarted my computer, done soft resets of my iPod, but it still won't update. Any help would be appreciated. Though the newer iPods are very pretty, I am quite happy with my old dinosaur, haha.

After a lot of searching and working on this, I found the problem - and it wasn't my previously theorized conspiracy to get us all to buy more from Apple.... It was quite simple actually.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304508 I followed all of these directions including re-installing the dlls and the usb drivers, but I think the key was that I have multiple USB devices plugged into my computer. I unplugged all but my wireless keyboard. Then I used a different USB port for my iPod than I had tried before. It updated..... Yeah. I don't have to buy one of the new over priced fancy models!!!!
