Ipod mini freezes and dies

My ipod mini, which I have had since January 2004, has recently started freezing during songs and then completely shutting off. When it freezes the music coming out of the ear buds sounds like a scratched CD and then a moment later it will completly freeze and shut off. When the ipod mini does shut off, the only way I can restart it is if I hold down the menu and select buttons on the click wheel (it won't respond to plugging into a power outlet or my computer). Also, when it does shut down, there is plenty of battery, so i figured that that was not the problem.
I went to the apple store and they told me to restore the ipod mini to its original factory settings and that didn't work. I also read a post on this forum that said to hit the back of the ipod when it begins to skip and freeze. That did not work either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

yes i have the same problem!
but i've had my ipod for only 5 days!!
and it's a new one because the previous one had the same problem, so i got a new one instead.
which ***** because it's broken !!
aaargh !!

• IPod Mini freezes and stops working?

This happened to my friend, too, but she was able to return hers to the store. I've had my iPod Mini since July.
I was listening to my music as usual, and then it just stopped. The screen stayed on and the "Play" triangle stayed there, but the screen froze 1:11 into my song, and the clock at the top froze too. The screen finally went blank when the battery died. I plugged it into my computer and the battery charging icon showed up but it was frozen. I unplugged it and the Apple logo came on and stayed until the battery died.
I used my plug charger, plugged it in and tried to "reset" (holding "menu" and "select" at the same time) but nothing happened. Does anyone know how to fix or what's wrong with it? (I was blaming solar flares but there's gotta be a better explanation)
Thanks for your help!

Hi
Before you plug your iPod with the Ac charger, Press "Menu"+"Select" keys until you see the Apple Logo. Then connect it with the AC Charger, press "Select"+"play" keys and it will put your iPod in Disk Mode. Connect it with your PC, and open the iPod updater and do the RESTORE - bear in mind it will erase all your data in your iPod. Once finished, update your iPod with your iTune. Hope it works

I have had a similar problem with my iPod click wheel classic - upon connection, iTunes would freeze, upon disconnect things would go back to normal. • Screen on ipod touch freezes and then goes white.

Screen on ipod touch freezes and then goes white. Ihave restarted it and restored it but it didn't work. Anyone know what is wrong with it and how it can be fixed?

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

• IPod mini freezes computer and won't restore, etc.

I have an ipod mini, purchased nearly 2 years ago and this is the first time it's given me trouble. Worked fine on Friday and then started givin me the folder and exclamation point icon everytime I tried to turn it on, reset it, restore, etc. Tried following the "5 Trys" to no avail. Tried banging it 4 or 5 times against the table. Don't know what else to do. Is it worth sending it back to Apple to see if they can fix it?
One thing that I don't see anywhere on the Apple Support site - what do I do when plugging the iPod into causes the computer to lock up? I've tried this on two computers, both of which are updated with the latest version of iTunes. Tried a disk restore and got as far as the checkmark on the screen, but again the computer freezes up when I get to the part where I plug it in and try to update it through iTunes.
Please help!

Update: Tried connecting the iPod to a coworker's Mac this morning and it tried going through the restore process, but ended up getting this error message:
The ipod "ipod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1429).
I tried searching for this error number on the ipod support site but it didn't come up with anything. Is my ipod toast?!

I can't manage any music on my ipod mini with itunes. So I decided to try the restore...Everything goes smoothly until I get to the progress bar where itunes is "restoring" my ipod. My music is still on my ipod and it still charges and works perfectly except when I want to manage my music. Please help :P

• IPod Mini Freezes while transferring music

Hey all...
When transferring tracks from iTunes to my iPod Mini, iTunes seems to freeze after / during track #3 song transfer.
I've reset, restored, upgraded, done everything i've been reading.
I've even done a full MP3 libary scan for any corrupt mp3's, and have removed all 'suspicious' mp3s... with no improvemnt.
There is nothing wrong with the iPod being recognized by Itunes on my G4 Powerbook...
It just freezes...
No explanation.
Just freezes.
Any suggestions?

I am having a similar problem, as a lot of people appear to be. Those steps have not yet helped me. I'm trying again just in case.
I hope Apple fixes this problem, it appears to be widespread since the latest iPod and OS X updates, or maybe security updates or something.

• IPod Mini "Freezes" - Stops Responding

Last week my daughter's iPod mini froze for the first time. I was able to restore it and everything was working fine until yesterday. She has upgraded to the latest iTunes. I believe it is 7.0.1. After upgrading, iTunes told her to restore her iPod. Which she did using the embedded iPod updater in iTunes 7.0. Today the darn thing froze up again.
Is this an iTunes 7.0.1 issue or is it an iPod mini issue. It seems like we should not have an iPod that freezes up multiple times in a week, requiring multple restore operations, only to freeze up again within a day or so.
It is driving me nuts. I need some good advice. Thanks for your help.

• My ipod mini freezed, now shows a sad ipod icon

Good Afternoon.
The last thing my ipod-mini did was to freeze on a song title without playing it,then when battery finished, after few hours it was only able to show the apple, then the sad icon and the address www.apple.com/sopport/ipod and the half battery icon as if recharging but not when connected to my pc.
My pc does not recognise it at all.
It is 20 months old not covered by insurance anymore.
What do you suggest?!
Thank you very much,
Jessica :o(

Hey Jessica!
What you'll need to do is restore your iPod if it's experienceing the sad-faced icon on the screen.
Restoring is done in iTunes, though, so your iPod will need to be recognized in order to restore it.
First, try putting your iPod into disk mode, then connecting it to your computer to restore.
If that attempt doesn't work, then try the <a href="Five R's, and check out the other things to try in this article -> iPod isn't recognized in Windows or in iTunes
Also, please see Mitch 731's very useful post here; it's all about the sad iPod icon: Sad iPod icon/my iPod idsplays a folder icon with an exclamation point!
I hope that helps you.

• Mini Freezes and Makes Grinding Noises

Hey All,
This is something that has been a continuous problem with my Mini for the past few months. Whenever I connect it to a computer, it will freeze for about 30 seconds before beggining its update. Whenever I select a song to play, it will freeze for about a minute, make strange grinding and clicking noises before skipping to the next song. There are also constant pauses during playback before it continues normally. I can't skip songs normally either as it freezes again.
This problem seemed to start to occur after I dropped my iPod off my bed (less than 45cm) so I somehow doubt that could've triggered this, but anything is possible, so hey.
I have tried reformatting the Mini, restoring it, updating software etc numerous times to no avail. Is all hope lost, or can it still be fixed?
Thanks in advance,
Blake
iPod Mini Windows XP

The sad thing is that all hard drives will eventually fail--it's just a mechanical system that will wear over time and eventually break down. The good news is that they can be replaced--even by you if you are up to it. Or there are many places that will do it for you. A bigger disaster would be logic board failure, which is way more expensive to replace.
You might be interested in http://www.ifixit.com/, which has instructions for replacing the hard drive yourself among other things. It's not trivial to do and it's easy to mess up, but you can learn how your computer is put together and what it might take to learn how to work on it yourself.
In the meantime, a new computer would probably be a good idea. Once you're back in business, you can decide what to do with the iBook. If it's only the hard drive, it may well be worth fixing and upgrading with a bigger hard drive. If you want to do this, you can post back with a new topic and there will be plenty of people to advise you.
Good luck!

• New iPod keeps freezing and restarting.

I just bought a 60GB white g5 iPod and loaded a bunch of music onto it. Whenever I try to play a song it goes back to the apple screen and restarts. If it actually plays a song it freezes and restarts when it needs to go to the next song, if it doesn't do that it will play about three seconds of a song and go to the next one and freeze and restart pretty soon after.
A relative of mine has another new 60GB iPod and we tried loading music on it from my computer and it works just fine so it's obviously the iPod and not my files or anything. I tried doing a complete restore on the iPod and then putting music back on it but it still has the same problem.
Is anyone else having a problem like this? Is there anything I can do, or should I just either contact Apple about getting it fixed/replaced or return it to the store?

did you reset your ipod with the new update, it usually solves that problem, a lot of people were having problems under the factory settings
