IPod mini froze?

As of two days ago, my iPod mini will not work properly. Last night, I tried to turn it on, but it wouldn't respond. I finally got the Apple icon to come up after trying to reset it, but then I got the folder with the exclamation mark. When I plug it into the computer, I get the big battery sign, with about 1/4 of it shaded in, but it is frozen. My computer doesn't recognize that the iPod mini is even plugged in. Today, I downloaded the iPod updater, but that did not help the problem. I have been reading different posts involving this problem, and everything that I have tried has not worked. If anyone has any new suggestions, please reply! Thanks.

Just to let you know... a few days after I made that post, I took my mini back to the place of purchase, and they had to exchange it. Supposebly something inside with the software was messed up? Just thought I would give up an update!

  • Replacement iPod mini issues

My iPod mini froze, so I took it to Best Buy and they replaced it with a new one. They just switched the iPod's so I didn't get the ID for it, that means I can't register it. When I plug it into my computer, it says I need to run the iPod update. I do that and it says "Internal Error." My computer doesn't recognize my iPod after that. What do I do?

You don't need ID to register your iPod, all you need is the serial number on the bottom of the iPod. It's very small and it should be the first line after the square with how many GB your iPod has..right under it.

  • IPod Mini "Freezes" - Stops Responding

Last week my daughter's iPod mini froze for the first time. I was able to restore it and everything was working fine until yesterday. She has upgraded to the latest iTunes. I believe it is 7.0.1. After upgrading, iTunes told her to restore her iPod. Which she did using the embedded iPod updater in iTunes 7.0. Today the darn thing froze up again.
Is this an iTunes 7.0.1 issue or is it an iPod mini issue. It seems like we should not have an iPod that freezes up multiple times in a week, requiring multple restore operations, only to freeze up again within a day or so.
It is driving me nuts. I need some good advice. Thanks for your help.

    Hi
Before you plug your iPod with the Ac charger, Press "Menu"+"Select" keys until you see the Apple Logo. Then connect it with the AC Charger, press "Select"+"play" keys and it will put your iPod in Disk Mode. Connect it with your PC, and open the iPod updater and do the RESTORE - bear in mind it will erase all your data in your iPod. Once finished, update your iPod with your iTune. Hope it works

  • How to restore iCal and Address Book from my iPod mini.

I used to back-up my iCal and Address Book to both my Nokia phone and my iPod mini twice a day. then over Christmas my laptop hard drive and my phone both broke within 2 days of each other. Ouch! My only copy of my addresses and diary are now on the iPod. I could spend days reading the data and type it into to computer manually, but there has to be a way to do it automatically. *Mustn't there?*

    Similar problem here,
I have a month-old archived version of my AddressBook, but today my entire rolodex vanished when the program froze and I force quit. I have a much more recent update on my ipod and have made significant additions/editions in the past month. Can I retrieve all that data from my iPod??
    Help!

  • IPod mini will not go to sleep

I have been having trouble ever since I DL'ed iTunes 7.
iPod mini started by skipping, then froze. It is no longer recognized by Firewire ports, though same cable allows it to connect to USB.
I did the 5 R's and though the iPod takes a charge, plays music, etc, it is still not recognized on the FW bus (though connecting it via FW WILL charge it).
Also, cannot make it go to sleep and it just stays on until the battery is drained.
    Any thoughts?

I'm having the same problem. Also, since downloading 7, my iPod mini is in disk mode and I can't force it out. What's up with this? I'll be watching for anyone with any answers. Thanks.

  • Ipod mini battery trouble

Hello, I purchased my son a mini ipod and although i am not 100% positive which generation it is i do know that it is either a generation 1 or 2. My son was listening to the ipod in bed one night then it froze on the song, on the screen it showed the song and the artist.
My son is tellin me 2 different stories either he droped it or it suddenly froze.
I have changed the battery myself through instructios i found on the internet, everything went fine. All that the screen shows now is an apple symbol even when i put it in the wall to charge, A battery symbol appeared for about 10 seconds then it went back to the apple symbol this was before i plugged it into the wall.
Is there anyway i can fix it or do i have to restore it or is my apple ipod mini stuffed!!
Any help would be most appreciated..
    Thank You

sounds like your ipod mini is dead i wouldn't of tried to change the battery yourself i would have gone to the local
apple macintosh retailer or repair shop it would have then cost you only $79.99 to have someone replace the battery
and it being done by a trained professional instead it is going to cost you 300.00 for a ipod now so have fun

  • Ipod mini being really stupid.

okay, so i bought an ipod mini from a friend for really cheap.
she never had any problems with it.
which i first got it, i noticed that whenever i started a song, it would automatically skip to the next song, which was weird but a minor annoyance.
shortly after, it froze in mid song, which was terrible, as i was new to ipods, but with the aid of my wife, we figured out how to reset it, etc. so that was fine.
but ever since then, it has been acting really funny. i have to plug it up and un plug it a few times to get it to start charging, its not recognized by my apple itunes, and sometimes (after ejecting it properly) it messes up and the apple sign comes up. resetting it wouldnt be the biggest bother, but now i have to do the whole "menu+center key" thing about 30-40 times before it works again. still, that was only happening once every two weeks, so i thought better of it.
but now, i have gotten the "ipod sad face" icon, as well as the apple. and usually i could at least get it to charge. but now nothing. i am really strapped for cash but i dont feel like i can go on without an ipod now that i have had one! any suggesstions?

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Ipod mini won't write past certain limit

I woke up this morning to the sad folder face on my iPod mini. After a reset, it was still a sad mini, so I did what I thought necessary: I restored it with updater software. Now, it connects ok, and what music I can put on it plays fine. The problem is that I can't put more than about 1.15 GB of music onto the mini. After that, iTunes and the mini both freeze, and my only recourse is to unplug it, ignoring the warning about not doing that, and resetting the mini.
I have tried to so a secure erase of the free space using disk utility, and it freezes at about 15% of the progress bar, right where I'd expect based on my writing issues.
Anybody encountered this and solved it? My iPod is no longer under AppleCare, so regardless of whether or not it's my fault (I'm not ready to admit any blame just yet), I can't get it fixed/replaced for free.

I have been attempting to load music onto my ipod mini with iTunes and am having the same type of problem. On a previous day, I tried for hours and got frustrated and quit. Tonight I have been reading about this type of problem on message boards and have tried twice to load the songs. The first time, it froze on song #79 when it had loaded 804.7 MB. The second time, it froze on song #42 when it had loaded 636.2 MB.
I don't understand why it had to reload the exact same songs and froze earlier the second time than it did the first time.
The previous night when I was attempting to load songs, it froze several times on the same album, but not the same song. SO, I took that album out, thinking that the songs might be corrupted.
Another thought that I had is that there could be an incompatibility between versions of software in the iPod and iTunes?????

  • IPod Mini playing only half a song

I'm having a problem with my iPod mini. I uploaded a bunch of cd's onto my iPod last night. During the last cd my computer and iPod froze for about an hour. So I did the unthinkable and unhooked my iPod. Then all of my songs wouldn't play, so I deleted everything. Now when I upload songs, only half the song will play or sometimes the whole song will play but then the next song will only play a few seconds. It's very frustrating! What should I do?

What I suggest doing is using your ipod updater software to reset your mini to Factory Standards. Then, if you receive any problems during updating, there should be a little green keyboard with an arrow on your start toolbar by the time. It's called "Safely Remove Hardware" and you can use that to end the connection with your computer. And usually when compuers freeze, they should go back to normal within at least a day at the longest.

  • ITunes cant communicate with iPod Mini

Recently I plugged my iPod mini into my computer to update the songs, only to have my iPod freeze up. After a while it worked again and all my songs were gone from my iPod. When I plugged it back into my computer and opened iTunes to load all the songs back on, iTunes froze and wouldnt work, when I unplugged my iPod a message would pop up saying something like "the software needed for iTunes to communicate with IPod is missing, please reinstall iTunes" after reinstalling both iTunes and the iPod software, I still have this problem.

    So...
You have updated to iTUNES 5.0 and iPOD Mini version 1.4?
Some reports are up around the web about people having iPOD update problems after installing iTUNES 5.0.
Apparently, Apple will be issuing an update next week to fix the problem.
My iPOD updates fine, but I am getting a pop at the beginning of each song when I play iTUNES through my stereo using my Airport Express with Airtunes.
Never had a popping problem with the previous version.
