Hi,
I've got a similar problem. How old is your iPod? Mine's between two and three years old, and it seemed to be getting near battery replacement time (the battery was lasting about 45-60 minutes between charges). Now it won't draw power either from a socket or from my computer.
As for battery replacement, there may be no Apple Authorised outlets, but I'm sure that there are perfectly good battery replacement options out there. A cursory Google search brough up a couple (for example, http://www.sonnettech.com/product/ipod/batteries/service.html - this is just an example; being UK-based, I'm not in a position to recommend them).
When you spoke to Apple, did you call their iPod service number - (011) 719 9161? This was listed at http://www.zastore.co.za/ - seems like the Apple store has been outsourced in SA.
Anyway, good luck. And if you get a chance, let me know how old your iPod is and whether it's first- or second-gen so I can judge whether my problem's related.
Cheers.

  • This is the second time my Ipod mini has died.

Hi All, i really hope smeone can help me with this. I have an ipod mini which was given to me as a gift, it was bought last August 05 and died in Feb 06 (this had been resolved and i was given a new one) The thing is.... this new one has also died on me, and i only have this one 9 months. The new one i recieved did come with a 1 year warranty, but since then i have moved to spain from Ireland. Does anyone know if Apple will repair it for me a second time????????? and... will i have to go to Ireland? I would be grateful for any help on this one.

    Thank you

Much like your iPod, the warranty has expired. It expired in August 2006.
The warranty on replacement iPods is for 90 days, or the remainder of the original 12 month warranty whichever is the longer period.

  • My ipod touch has died. i tried charging but nothing. any sugestions?

my ipod touch has died. i trued charging but noyhing any sugestions?

If the cause is a flat battery, then leave the charger in, it takes some time to charge the battery to have enough to display the empty battery symbol, then some more time to be able to start the ipod.
If the battery died that's another problem, how old is the ipod?

  • IPod Mini has no library.

Hello everyone, this is my first post ever. It's a sad story, actually. I had a beautiful 1st generation iPod touch for about two years ago. Recently, my girlfriend's father managed to water damage my iPod touch, and refuses to replace it. Nice guy, isn't he? I don't have to funds to replace my touch, and I know nobody in the world covers water damage, so I found my old 4GB iPod mini. I want to use it until I can save up for a new however, it's not recognized by iTunes. Windows XP recognizes it as an iPod, but iTunes (9.2.0.61) never recognizes it. I tried using 3rd party programs such as CopyTrans, and CopyTrans diagnosed the issue saying that my iPod mini has no library and thats why it can't be recognized. How do I fix this? Thanks to all for reading and helping!

    Hello jbass54,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried some of the basics yet such as trying a different connector cable or simply plugging the iPod into different ports? Perhaps try and reset the iPod with it connected to your PC. To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together until the Apple logo appears. You may want to attempt this a few times for good measure.
If still no luck, try and force the iPod into *Disk Mode*.

What does this picture on my iPod mean?
Also, there is a pretty comprehensive post written by another forum member which is about the sad iPod icon. Be aware that it's quite involved and contains some info that will almost certainly void the warranty. If your iPod is still within the warranty period, you should use that option first.

  • IPod Mini battery dying too quickly

I got an iPod Mini very recently, on September 14, 2005. I read in the User's Manual that it would take about a month for the battery to go from completely charged to completely drained if I didn't use it at all. Well, I charged my iPod fully on Tuesday or so, and by this morning it was 3/4 drained - after no more than 6 days of not being used!
Also, the battery seems to die very quickly when I'm playing music on my iPod. It's supposed to have 18 hours of playback, but after about four hours total, it was very close to being drained. I know the battery metre is approximate, but I doubt it's 14 hours off.
I'm really hoping this isn't normal, because I don't use my iPod that much and I don't want to have to recharge it every week even when it's not being used, or every day when it IS being used.
So my question is...is this normal? Or should I take the iPod back to where I bought it and get it exchanged? Any other advice?

This is ridiclous. A lot of people seem to be having the same problems. I mean as it states 18hrs of playback it should be. I have the same problem and dont even use it much. When fully charged I only get about 4-5 hrs playback. I went back to where I got it and they told me to contact Apple as they dont have any more dealings with you as its between aple and the consumer. I have contacted them now. It also has stopped working for me since yesterday. I knew there was half of the battery left so when I went to turn it on, theres no response from it. The screen stays blank. I also plugged it into PC and its not being recognised on my iTunes. Its powerless and Ive tried all their recommendations but to no avail.

  • My mini has died... :(

Hi everyone...today my trustworthy blue iPod mini broke down. I have already checked the support, and I know what's wrong, but I need to know what to do.
I've had it for three years and it never broke once, except for dropping it a few times. Today, however, after listening to it for about a half hour, the music stopped playing and my iPod restarted. The result - a sad ipod face. Of course I called my boyfriend right up and asked him to look it up for me. I tried the whole disk-reset thing, and even plugged it into my Macbook when I got home. Nothing happened.
I have two choices: get it fixed, or just get a new iPod. I'd love a new iPod, but only if repairs aren't too expensive. Can someone tell me how much a repair could be around? Or should I just skip over it and get a new one and throw the old one out?
    Thanks! ^^
    --Angela

seems that the problem caused by the shortage of power due to the bad battery (which needs to be replacement around 18 months), which corrupted the OS of your iPod.
The repairing cost is quite expensive, rather leave it as a paper weight, have a read the following
    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.
    2. Do a search on Google and some topics on this discussion forum about “Sad iPod”

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Ipod min has stopped being recognised

My ipod mini was installed on my windows XP and tunes bought/downloaded from itunes. Six months later and computer has stopped recognising ipod. Message says to "reset" or "restore" and only the restore option (with subsequent loss of songs) can be activated.
Need suggestions to ensure that original PC recognises ipod.
Posible cause of problem: ipod was connected to a Mac to download songs from a friend's itunes (no songs bought).
    Thanks!

I have now removed and re-installed every piece of Apple Software on my laptop. I assume this would result in the drivers being re-installed.
However, when I plug the iPOD in a message comes up 'Installing Device Drivers'. Then a message comes up that they are installed successfully, but it does also say 'Searching folders for preconfigured drivers...'. After 10 mins I assumed this did not mean anything and closed the window.
It is not convenient for me to check the other computer's drivers. Anyway, the iPOD used to work on this computer. The only thing I have done on this computer re device drivers is to start using a USB mouse (which installed drivers) and I also checked them all for updates. Only the Intel ones updated.
Needless to say the iPOD is still unrecognised in iTunes.
    Any further help much appreciated.

  • HELP!! ipod mini has lost its songs and pc wont recognise it

I've turned my ipod mini on today after not using it for a week. I plugged it in to the pc via the usb cable and itunes popped up as usual. My ipod wasn't on the source list and a box appeared saying that itunes didn't recognise my ipod and I had to go to software updater to reset it. There was no frowny face or all the other icons that appear when there's a problem. All the songs and folders I had on the ipod had disappeared even though they were still on itunes. After spending almost 2hrs downloading the new version and updater (dial-up) it still didn't recognise it.
I tried to reset it but got the message "ipod updater...... can't install firmware on connected ipod. The ipod's hardware and the updater firmware are not compatible".
I've done held the menu and select button to restore factory settings etc and its still the same.
It's constantly charging whilst plugged in and nothing I do will get my songs back on the ipod.
It was fine a week ago when I last used it and can't understand where all the gremlins have appeared from. No one else has used it.
    Someone out there please help.

How were you able to plug in your iPod, your iTunes opened because of it but then it says it didn't recognize it? LOL Funny..

  • HT1212 The pc that I synced iPod with has died.

my daughter has forgotten the password for her ipod touch (approx 1 year old with camera).
in the meantime, the pc it was synced to has died.
I copied itunes folders from back up of old pc (on ext hdd) into iTunes folders on new laptop.
I connected iPod to new laptop and copied purchased apps from ipod.
itunes on laptop now looks like its got all her music and apps
i'm hoping to get the password reset on ipod without losing her apps and hopefully her photos & videos (on ipod only - not backed up) etc
Should I restore or use recovery mode or???
    thanks for any help.

    - Try connecting the iPod to the new computer and see if yo can do a backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
If you can then restore from backup. Note the backup does not included synced media like apps and music. You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
The apps have to be in your iTunes library when you restore from backup in order to have a place for the app data to go.
    - If you can't, can you you copy the backup from the old computer? It is located here:
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press theReturn key.
If you can then place it in the same location on the new computer and restoe from backup
    - Otherwise you will have to restore to factry settings/new iPod.
    - Place the iPod in recovery mode or DFU mode if requied to restore the iPod.
