IPOD mini is locked

Hello,
I am trying to connect my IPOD mini with my itunes and when I try to create a new playlist it doesn't allow me. When I look at the bottom of my itunes page, where it says how much used space I have there is a small lock on the right of the free space MB. Does anyone know what I need to do to unlock my IPOD mini so I can add music? Thanks.

hi Gi Gi!
Now when I click on my actual Ipod mini icon in itunes all my music that is listed is in grey and I can't click on any of them.
that's normal behavior when you have one of the automatic syncing/updating options engaged. for a little more information on the various options, see this user tip:

  • My Ipod mini shows "locked" on the ITunes screen

When connecting my Ipod mini to the computer I see in ITunes a " locked" sign.
I can only add new music (still some disk space on Ipod); it does not delete old songs that I have deleted in ITunes.
My Ipod mini is not set to act as external hard disk

Do you have your ipod on automatic update or manual update? If it's on automatic update you can't delete songs and there will be a lock symbol down at the bottom of the screen next to where it tells you how much space you have left.

  • Ipod mini on lock down

i have an ipod mini and when i connect my ipod and then on itunes go to my ipod like where you copy your songs from your library to your ipod and try to play a song it won't let me. All of the songs are a light shade of gray like their un selected. also at the bottom where it shows how many GB's you have used there is a lock symbol right next to it and i don't know how to make it go away .pleeeeeesssseee help me!!!!!!!

The songs are "greyed out" because you have the iPod set to transfer songs automatically. That is also why the padlock icon appears at the bottom of iTunes next to the space used/available.
If you want the songs to be bold and selectable/editable, then you need to change to manually managing your songs.
Please note that by editing/changing the songs on your iPod in this manner, the changes will not affect the songs in iTunes, only on your iPod.

  • My iPod mini has locked up...I cannot get in to turn off the "find my iPad" so I cannot utilize the recover.  In addition the clear button at the bottom of the unit no longer works...what can I do?

Can anybody suggest how to solve this problem.  I have an iPad mini that gas locked up.  I cannot get into the menu to turn org the "find my iPad" setting.  Is there another way...by the way, the menu button at the bottom of the iPad has stopped working, too.

If this is your iPad, no problem.   Access your iCloud account.

You may need to restore from the cloud as so far the only way to unlock is to remove from your iCloud and erase the device.  There has to be a better way.
There is a ton of info on finding an iPhone with iCloud.   Where is the info on getting it working again after it is recovered?

  • New audiobook imports lock up iPod mini

After listenting to newly-imported audiobooks (CD's from library) then turning off my iPod mini, it locks up, won't restart without a reset operation, battery drains while locked up. Audiobooks imported prior to download of the newest version of iTunes (7.5) do not cause this problem. The computer is an iMac using OS X 10.3.9. Import settings are for AAC encoder, stereo, 64kbps. Files, both old and new are shown as .m4a. No problems with music files.

    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
You may need to put your iPod into disk mode before connection

  • Ipod mini all jacked up

my ipod mini is locked up. It has about 90% of the screen showing a song playing, and 10% with a side bar and some ellipses - like it was trying to go to the menu screen then got hung.
It does not respond to resetting - holding Menu + Play or holding Menu + Select, even after toggling the hold button.
It does not respond when connecting to the computer (Windows compatible). It's just hung up, frozen in it's own little Apple world.
Is there anything else I can do? Otherwise I was just going to wait until the battery died to see if I could reset it then.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you seen this? You would reset with Menu+Select...
    Resetting Your iPod
If that fails to work after several attempts, then your best bet may be, as you say, to let the battery die. Then connect it back up to the charger/computer and reset it.

  • Ipod Mini's Hold Lock not working.

    Hi,
My girlfriend's Ipod Mini appears to be stuck with the Hold Lock permanently on. The Ipod can not be turned on nor does it respond when it is hooked up to the computer.
I have updated it's software but I am unable to reset it. Can you suggest anything to rectify this issue?
    PC   Windows XP

    Hi TJClegg,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I would not try forcing it, you don't want to risk breaking it (voiding warranties). You may want to bring it to your <a href="http://www.apple.com/retail/"</a>local Apple Store/Reseller to have it checked out. You may also want to look at iPod - Service FAQ.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

Trying to restore my old ipod mini to factory settings, so I can recycle it. But it is locked with my old password, long forgotten. Do I have to reset my current pw & will that unlock my old mini if I do? Would appreciate detail. Thank you.

  • Ipod Mini Locks Up When Using It With A JVC KS-PD100

Since I've updated my iPod mini to the latest version of the firmware it locks up when I use it with my "Made For iPod" JVC KS-PD100 adaptor.
This allows me to connect my ipod to my JVC car head unit and control it via the head unit.
It worked perfectly when I had the old firmware on the iPod, but now I have updated it to the latest version (after a warranty repair) I get the JVC logo appear on the screen and it all works fine with the head unit, but when I disconnect the iPod, the controls are still locked up. I then have to force a re-boot of the ipod to be able to use it again.
I've tried to download an older version of the ipod updater, but all the links I try give me the latest version of the updater when I come to install it.
    My questions are
    1. Has anybody else had this problem?
    2. Are apple aware of it?
    3. I'm guessing it's a software problem, or have I geen given a duff rarranty replacement?
    4. Where can I get a copy of the older ipod updater - preferrably the october version?
Any help would be most appreciated as I've e-mailed apple and had no reply at all!
    Thanks
    Ross

I've tried that already - but then the iPod is connected to the sterio, the iPod controls are disabled so I can't switch it off at all.
If I disconnect the iPod before turning the sterio off, the ipod stays playing until I reboot it
It worked perfectly on my old ipod with the old firmware, if I turned off the sterio, the JVC logo woulds disappear, the ipod would be paused and use of the clickwheel controls would be returned automatically.
I'm guessing it's a bug in the latest iPod firmware

  • IPod mini's capacity locked

the amount of songs my friend's ipod mini can upload has been locked (i believe). there's a little locked symbol at the bottom of iTunes where it tells you how much GB you have left. there is still 205 mb left. I am unable to click on any of the songs or upload onto the mini. can someone tell me how to unlock the GB? thanks.

The lock you see indicates automatic updating. You should be able to install songs with no problem. If she's updating playlists only, you'll need to make sure the songs you're adding are in a playlist that is updated.
Since she's automatically updating, you will NOT be able to click and play any of the songs on her iPod within iTunes.

  • Ipod mini turns on by itself even though it's on a lock mood

My mini ipod is about one and a half year old. I use my Bose speaker as the charger and my ipod out of no where turns on by itself even though it's on a lock mood. It's been happening a lot lately, even when my ipod is not charging. By the end of the day, when i want to use it my battery is low because it's on even though i didn't turn it on. Sometimes, I caught my ipod being "ON" even though nothing triggered it because its on a lock mood. Any suggestion of what is wrong with it?

You most likely have an alarm set.
To check go to extras/clock/alarm and set it to off. Check the calendar also, extras/calendar/alarm.

  • Itunes shows lock against ipod mini

i have a wierd problem. Some time back itunes started showing a lock sign against the ipod mini when connected. i am unable to play any songs from the ipod and all the songs come greyed and i cannot do anything with any data in the ipod. otherwise the ipod plays songs normally and there is no problem in any operation.
i have updated to latest version of itunes and ipod but no effect. i am using windows xp and ipod mini.

iTunes is set to Automatically update the iPod.
    iTunes prefs -> iPod.
Change to Manually manage songs and playlists.

  • My ipod mini locks up ALL THE TIME

I think I may have gotten a lemon. My ipod mini just stops playing and none of the buttons work until I reset it. This happens at least once every time I use it sometimes two or three times. Really annoying. My boyfriend has an ipod mini and uses it at least 7 hours a day. His has only needed to be reset once ever.

Very possibly your iPod is faulty. Is it new, or has it ever worked correctly?
Before you think about sending it off for service, have you tried restoring it?

  • IPod mini 6GB not recognized by PC or iTunes

I am unable to get my daughter's iPod mini 6GB to be recognized on any of our three PCs or laptop. The iPod has been working fine with all of them the past 1.5 years. All PCs are running Windows XP SP2.
Initially, the iPod appeared to be dead, but through a Reset I was able to get it recovered. But plugging the iPod into a USB port on any PC does not bring it up on the PC. Windows Explorer, Device Manager, Disk Management, and iTunes do not know of the existence of the iPod.
But, the iPod's charging symbol is on and animated when plugged into a USB port. The iPod can be turned on, and what music is stored on it can be played and heard. All of the iPod buttons appears to be working normally.
If this were a PC device, I would reformat/wipe the drive and restart, but since none of our PCs recognize the iPod, I can't do that. Would a bad USB cable allow the iPod to charge, but not to be recognized?

I should add a couple of more bits of information. While the iPod was charging, the "Do not disconnect" message was not being displayed. Since the PC can't lock onto the iPod, this message does not show up ...
... that is until a few minutes ago. While leaving the iPod to charge on the USB port, I picked it up to see if I could open it. I was looking at the front left corner where it is slightly dinged (she has not babied this iPod!), I noticed the screen changed and the "Do not disconnect" message shows up.
I glance over at the PC, and sure enough, I see two icons in the system tray, one for "new hardware" and the other for the mounting of USB devices. I go to Windows Explorer and now see the drive linked. I enter iTunes and it recognizes the iPod (it also wanted to install iPod software v1.4.1, which I declined at this time).
Any guesses as to what's going on? Short in the USB cable? Short in the iPod? Not enough battery power in the iPod for the PC to recognize it, yet enough to play its music? I'm confused and not sure what to do next.

  • Ipod mini isn't recognized by itunes or computer

I have no idea what to do. I connect my ipod mini to my mac, the ipod recognizes that it's been connected but it doesn't show up within iTunes or in Finder.
    I have iTunes 7.7, Macbook 10.5.4
Any ideas? I want to update my music and this is really frustrating me.
I read around and tried to re-install/downgrade to iTunes 7 but that didn't work or I did it wrong.
    Any help would be amazing.

First thing to do is reset the FW chip set on the mother board (or USB chip set if that is what you are connecting your Mini to you Mac). Unfortunately, when you power down the computer there is always a bit of power still applied to the motherboard to keep things alive and this usually includes the ports to do stuff like detect when a device wants to wake up the computer. The downside of this is when a bus/port chipset goes into a weird state, locks up, etc., simply power cycling (shutdown & restart) the computer won't work.
So first thing to try is resetting the chipset and to do this you have to power down the computer and completely unplug the computer from the wall power (unplug the power cord to your Mac) and then remove the laptop's battery. Also unplug everything from the Mac's ports (USB, FW, Ethernet, etc.) to make sure no parasitic power is still there to keep the chipset alive.
Now let it sit for a minute (give those big power caps in there time to discharge). Now reattach the battery pack plug the power cord back in, & start up the Mac. Now plug in accessories/hard-drives and see if your FW (or USB) ports and the iPod work any better.
    Best of luck!
