Ipod mini is not recognized by computer, or itunes

I bought this ipod mini off of ebay, and it did not come with the cd. I have installed itunes, but when i plug the ipod in and the found new hardware thing doesnt pop up, and itunes doesnt recognize the ipod is plugged in. The ipod works fine, and i have reset it. Any suggestions? Do i need that cd??

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Make sure that the iPod updater is installed...
http://www.apple.com/ipod/download
Install that and see if the iPod shows Do Not Disconnect on the screen. If it does then open the iPod updater and restore the iPod. If it doesn't then try resetting the iPod with it connected to the computer...

I installed an ipod shuffle with different name.  Now my ipod classic is no longer recognized by computer or itunes.  It appears that Itunes decided that I had replaced the classic with a shuffle.  Classic battery doesnt seem to want to charge, and cannot restore.

  • IPod mini 6GB not recognized by PC or iTunes

I am unable to get my daughter's iPod mini 6GB to be recognized on any of our three PCs or laptop. The iPod has been working fine with all of them the past 1.5 years. All PCs are running Windows XP SP2.
Initially, the iPod appeared to be dead, but through a Reset I was able to get it recovered. But plugging the iPod into a USB port on any PC does not bring it up on the PC. Windows Explorer, Device Manager, Disk Management, and iTunes do not know of the existence of the iPod.
But, the iPod's charging symbol is on and animated when plugged into a USB port. The iPod can be turned on, and what music is stored on it can be played and heard. All of the iPod buttons appears to be working normally.
If this were a PC device, I would reformat/wipe the drive and restart, but since none of our PCs recognize the iPod, I can't do that. Would a bad USB cable allow the iPod to charge, but not to be recognized?

I should add a couple of more bits of information. While the iPod was charging, the "Do not disconnect" message was not being displayed. Since the PC can't lock onto the iPod, this message does not show up ...
... that is until a few minutes ago. While leaving the iPod to charge on the USB port, I picked it up to see if I could open it. I was looking at the front left corner where it is slightly dinged (she has not babied this iPod!), I noticed the screen changed and the "Do not disconnect" message shows up.
I glance over at the PC, and sure enough, I see two icons in the system tray, one for "new hardware" and the other for the mounting of USB devices. I go to Windows Explorer and now see the drive linked. I enter iTunes and it recognizes the iPod (it also wanted to install iPod software v1.4.1, which I declined at this time).
Any guesses as to what's going on? Short in the USB cable? Short in the iPod? Not enough battery power in the iPod for the PC to recognize it, yet enough to play its music? I'm confused and not sure what to do next.

  • My iphone 4s is stuck on connect to itunes, is not recognized by computer or itunes

my iphone is stuck on the "connect to itunes" loading screen, and when it's plugged into my computer, itunes and the computer are not able to recognize it. when it is plugged in, it gets a "USB device not recognized" and in device manager, it shows up as an "unknown device". I have read and tried everything in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538, as well as uninstalling and re-installing itunes and all it's components several times, but nothing has helped. Please help!!!

The iPhone has gone into recovery mode and you have to restore by connecting to a computer with iTunes and follow the instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808.  If you do not have a computer with iTunes, a friend with a computer with iTunes, can you get to an Apple store genius bar and see if the techs will restore for you?

  • IPod nano does not charge & is not recognized by computer or iTunes

    I have a 1st generation nano 1 GIG.
    It appears "dead."
It is not recognized by My Computer, iTunes or the Ipod Updater (The updater asks that I connect the iPod, which I do). The iPod diagnostics through iTunes also reports that my iPod is not connected.
I have tried my iPod on 4 different machines, with one of them having USB 2.0.
I tried the following from Jeff Bryan. (I don't know if the links from his post have carried over into this post.) So I will list the things I have tried near the end of this post.
    - My iPod won't turn on.
    - iPod battery doesn't charge.
    - iTunes 7 doesn't recognize the iPod.
    - Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod.
    - iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes.
    - iPod does not appear in iTunes.
    - Fast user switching in Windows XP is not supported.
I tried resetting my iPod by switching the Hold button on and off and then pressing Menu and the Select button for 6-10 seconds. I have done this over and over and over.
I have uninstalled the latest iTunes, reboot, reinstall - same problem.
I have stopped the iPod service, plugged in the iPod, but it isn't recognized by My Computer as stated in the Apple Do-It-Yourself Help. I launched iTunes - same problem.
I used the window cleanup utility, reboot, reinstall iTunes, connect iPod - same problem.
I have used the Windows ipconfig utility to change my boot parameters, but still nothing.
If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate them.
My iPod is just shy of 6 months.

  • Ipod is not recognized by computer or itunes and does not charge

Hi, so for a few months I've been having a problem with my iPod Touch 4th gen where when i connect the ipod to the computer it does not connect. My Computer says "USB device not recognized" and also I've recognized that my ipod doesnt charge either. When I connect it to a wall charger the ipod charges fine, but i can't sync anything or any music. I have no idea how to fix this problem :\

  • Ipod Touch 3rd Gen - not recognized by computer or itunes.  Shows cable pointing to itunes logo.  Can't reset it.  Doesn't work at all.  Have tried all the supposed fixes on the apple site with no luck.  It suggested asking other users !

I have a 3rd Generation ipod touch that is not recognized by itunes or my computer.  My itunes works with other apple devices I own.  I cannot reset the ipod touch and can never get to the screen where it is supposed to show a red battery to turn it off.  I can't reset it.  Have tried to use the suggestions on the apple site to no avail.  Any suggestions ?

From my experience, the only way you're gonna get a PC afflicted with this disease to work with a 5th gen nano is to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes.  Those affected have been exhausted by this ongoing issue.  To update or not to update?  And I always say never update unless you have to, and turn off all that auto update mess!
I have two core2duo lappies running 32b vista.  My workflow dictates 32b fyi.  One is acer aspire running itunes v 11.1 (.0.126),  5th gen nano was originally formatted and works just fine on this machine to this day.  My other is the bigger badder lenovo thinkpad and the 5th gen will NOT mount using any version of itunes past 11.0 (.1.12)  Windows mounts it just fine.  itunes is not having it.  no shirt no shoes no service.
I have both a 4th and 5th gen nano.  The 4th gen works great on both machines, I even successfully tested it with the latest version (11.1.5) before subsequent deletion on the thinkpad!  Weird huh?  I think my next experiment might be to restore my 5th gen w/ a Mac and theeeeen plug it into PC itunez.
I'm at a loss on the thinkpad.  Scanned for intruders.  Cut the Lenovo bloat.  Executed system and reg maintenance.  Took down msconfig to a safe mode + itunes level to attempt to resolve possible sw conflicts but to no avail.  NO NO NO.  Every single dang port, every time on the thinkpad.  Has me feeling like others might get the same treatment by the next itunes update.  :|
    So in summary for me:
5th gen nano and thinkpad are a NoGo on 11.1^  last working version for me = 11.0.1
5th gen nano is working on an acer aspire 11.1.0  but no way in the world am I updating
4th gen nano is kicking 5th gen nano's @zz so what would make me want to buy a new ipod?

  • After upgrading to 8.1 in windows, my ipod is not recognized in computer or itunes

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 a while back, and just tried to synch my ipod with itunes and now my ipod is not being recognized in my comuper or itunes. Does anyone know why this is and/or how to fix it?
    Thanks!!
    Amber

    Hello Amber,
I would be concerned too if my iPod was not recognized by iTunes.  I found a couple of articles that might help with this.
If you don't see your iPod in the My Computer or Computer section of Windows, follow the steps in this article:
iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369
If Windows recognizes your iPod but iTunes does not, follow the steps in this article:
iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

  • Ipod not recognized by computer or itunes or anything!

just got a new ipod after i lost my old mini and when i plug my ipod into my computer using a 2.0 USB port it isnt recognized by my computer or my itunes , it doesnt even make the connection noise. My friends ipods are recognized by my computer and itunes. How do i make it work?

cant do any of the things in that artical because its a new ipod so i cant re anything to it.
Have you at least tried the Five R's listed there?
    Another possibility.
Since your friend has connected their iPod to your computer before (presuming that it's on manual update in iTunes), this could be causing drive letter confusion on your computer.
In this case, try connecting your friend's iPod to your computer, and re-assigning the drive letter of the iPod:
Log off of any other users on your computer (and disconnect any iPods that are currently connected to your computer, as well)
Then, put the iPod into Disk Mode, then follow these steps:
    1 - Don't plug in your friend's iPod yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel windows opened, connect the iPod.
5 - Right-click on the iPod's listing there (after a few moments when it gets recognized in this drive window), and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign this iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like (further along in the alphabet).
For more details, see this article:
Windows confuses iPod drive letter / Changing drive letter
    I hope that helps you.
