Ipod Mini Locks Up on Airplanes

Has anyone else had a problem with the mini locking up on an airplane or higher elevation (6000 - 7000) ft. When mine does, it creates a duplicate song on the ipod and it will not play that song until you erase and recopy from PC. Unit works fine near sea level, but always have a problem on the airplanes. Yet, my daughter's mini works fine on the airplane.

There have actually been several discussion threads about this but to recap the 5th Gen 60GB IPOD has a tendency to freeze on airplanes. This has happened to me on four different occasions. For each instance, the IPOD worked during flight once you got permission to use electronic devices but then stopped working about 10 to 15 minutes afterwards. At this time, IPOD technical support has no solution other than restoring the IPOD with the latest software updater. This did not work for me, because I experienced this problem on a flight on 2 weeks after I had installed the latest updater. The other comment that Tech Support gave me is that this IPOD model works only up until 10,000 feet. However, as other posters have pointed out, this should not make a difference in a pressurized cabin like an airplane. This is especially baffling when other electronic devices and even IPOD models do not have this problem. The good news is that the problem seems to be isolated only to this situation and works fine in other contexts. However, the Tech Support person filed a complaint on my behalf and he informed that a product engineer would review the complaint record. Therefore, it's probably a good idea that you and others who read this post and have this problem report it to Apple. If enough people complaint, there will be more motivation for Apple to develop a solution that is customized to solve the problem. Hope this information helps.

  • Ipod Mini Locks Up When Using It With A JVC KS-PD100

Since I've updated my iPod mini to the latest version of the firmware it locks up when I use it with my "Made For iPod" JVC KS-PD100 adaptor.
This allows me to connect my ipod to my JVC car head unit and control it via the head unit.
It worked perfectly when I had the old firmware on the iPod, but now I have updated it to the latest version (after a warranty repair) I get the JVC logo appear on the screen and it all works fine with the head unit, but when I disconnect the iPod, the controls are still locked up. I then have to force a re-boot of the ipod to be able to use it again.
I've tried to download an older version of the ipod updater, but all the links I try give me the latest version of the updater when I come to install it.
    My questions are
    1. Has anybody else had this problem?
    2. Are apple aware of it?
    3. I'm guessing it's a software problem, or have I geen given a duff rarranty replacement?
    4. Where can I get a copy of the older ipod updater - preferrably the october version?
Any help would be most appreciated as I've e-mailed apple and had no reply at all!
    Thanks
    Ross

I've tried that already - but then the iPod is connected to the sterio, the iPod controls are disabled so I can't switch it off at all.
If I disconnect the iPod before turning the sterio off, the ipod stays playing until I reboot it
It worked perfectly on my old ipod with the old firmware, if I turned off the sterio, the JVC logo woulds disappear, the ipod would be paused and use of the clickwheel controls would be returned automatically.
I'm guessing it's a bug in the latest iPod firmware

  • My ipod mini locks up ALL THE TIME

I think I may have gotten a lemon. My ipod mini just stops playing and none of the buttons work until I reset it. This happens at least once every time I use it sometimes two or three times. Really annoying. My boyfriend has an ipod mini and uses it at least 7 hours a day. His has only needed to be reset once ever.

Very possibly your iPod is faulty. Is it new, or has it ever worked correctly?
Before you think about sending it off for service, have you tried restoring it?

  • IPod Mini Locked?

Hi, whenever i plug my ipod into my laptop or my wall charger, it shows up as being locked. i have moved the lock button, held the menu and select to restart and nothing happens. the ipod stays on for about 2 min before turning itself off. during the 2 min, i will do everything i can to get the ipod to work, but with no luck. Can anybody help me?

    Gareth,
With your iPod connected, go to edit/preferences/iPod.
What do you have selected as the method of transfer?
With the padlock icon visible, then my guess would be you have auto already selected.

  • My mini locks up while playing.

My ipod mini locks up while playing a song. It doesn't matter what song it's playing. The time it does it is random also. It takes some time to clear and at times needs to be re-set. The Apple store ran the updated but it didn't help.

    Craig
I see you have reset your iPod before many times but that procedure hasn't worked to stop your iPod from locking up.
    Are you resetting correctly?
Have you tried to restore your iPod to factory settings using iPod Updater?

  • Ipod mini touch-wheel stopped responding

First the menu and scroll stopped responding, then everything. Nothing happens when I try to reset ipod by holding menu and select. (no apple icon appears).
Does anyone know what I can do? I don't really want to delete everything if I can help it...would this even work if the wheel is broken somehow? Will anything work?
(unless anyone knows how to transfer my music BACK to itunes - I don't have any music saved on my computer, I deleted it for space)
    THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE!

Mine is "locked" and therefore none of my buttons work either. Since it is locked in a nonplay mode, it won't even play but the screen appears fine.
My message replies are under "ipod mini locked".

  • Ipod Mini's Hold Lock not working.

    Hi,
My girlfriend's Ipod Mini appears to be stuck with the Hold Lock permanently on. The Ipod can not be turned on nor does it respond when it is hooked up to the computer.
I have updated it's software but I am unable to reset it. Can you suggest anything to rectify this issue?

    Hi TJClegg,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I would not try forcing it, you don't want to risk breaking it (voiding warranties). You may want to bring it to your <a href="http://www.apple.com/retail/"</a>local Apple Store/Reseller to have it checked out. You may also want to look at iPod - Service FAQ.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

Trying to restore my old ipod mini to factory settings, so I can recycle it. But it is locked with my old password, long forgotten. Do I have to reset my current pw & will that unlock my old mini if I do? Would appreciate detail. Thank you.
PS: It was windows based, I'm now on imac.

I've tried a lot of the stuff mentioned at that link and elsewhere, modifying host files etc. trying to downgrade my iPhone 4 back to 5.1.1 no luck , apple has locked up 5.1.1 for my phone and iPad . one post said I'm "stuck with iOS 6" darn I should have been more careful. I have the 5.1.1 Ispw on my MacBook its a permissions thing I don't understand. I'll post when I find a way around it and I will . iOS 6 took away most of my AirPlay functionality . to hek with iPhone 5 I'm starting to look at android. big bummer apple

  • New audiobook imports lock up iPod mini

After listenting to newly-imported audiobooks (CD's from library) then turning off my iPod mini, it locks up, won't restart without a reset operation, battery drains while locked up. Audiobooks imported prior to download of the newest version of iTunes (7.5) do not cause this problem. The computer is an iMac using OS X 10.3.9. Import settings are for AAC encoder, stereo, 64kbps. Files, both old and new are shown as .m4a. No problems with music files.

    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
You may need to put your iPod into disk mode before connection

  • My Ipod mini shows "locked" on the ITunes screen

When connecting my Ipod mini to the computer I see in ITunes a " locked" sign.
I can only add new music (still some disk space on Ipod); it does not delete old songs that I have deleted in ITunes.
My Ipod mini is not set to act as external hard disk

Do you have your ipod on automatic update or manual update? If it's on automatic update you can't delete songs and there will be a lock symbol down at the bottom of the screen next to where it tells you how much space you have left.

  • Ipod mini on lock down

i have an ipod mini and when i connect my ipod and then on itunes go to my ipod like where you copy your songs from your library to your ipod and try to play a song it won't let me. All of the songs are a light shade of gray like their un selected. also at the bottom where it shows how many GB's you have used there is a lock symbol right next to it and i don't know how to make it go away .pleeeeeesssseee help me!!!!!!!

The songs are "greyed out" because you have the iPod set to transfer songs automatically. That is also why the padlock icon appears at the bottom of iTunes next to the space used/available.
If you want the songs to be bold and selectable/editable, then you need to change to manually managing your songs.
Please note that by editing/changing the songs on your iPod in this manner, the changes will not affect the songs in iTunes, only on your iPod.

  • IPod mini's capacity locked

the amount of songs my friend's ipod mini can upload has been locked (i believe). there's a little locked symbol at the bottom of iTunes where it tells you how much GB you have left. there is still 205 mb left. I am unable to click on any of the songs or upload onto the mini. can someone tell me how to unlock the GB? thanks.

The lock you see indicates automatic updating. You should be able to install songs with no problem. If she's updating playlists only, you'll need to make sure the songs you're adding are in a playlist that is updated.
Since she's automatically updating, you will NOT be able to click and play any of the songs on her iPod within iTunes.

  • IPOD mini is locked

    Hello,
I am trying to connect my IPOD mini with my itunes and when I try to create a new playlist it doesn't allow me. When I look at the bottom of my itunes page, where it says how much used space I have there is a small lock on the right of the free space MB. Does anyone know what I need to do to unlock my IPOD mini so I can add music? Thanks.

    hi Gi Gi!
Now when I click on my actual Ipod mini icon in itunes all my music that is listed is in grey and I can't click on any of them.
that's normal behavior when you have one of the automatic syncing/updating options engaged. for a little more information on the various options, see this user tip:

  • Ipod mini turns on by itself even though it's on a lock mood

My mini ipod is about one and a half year old. I use my Bose speaker as the charger and my ipod out of no where turns on by itself even though it's on a lock mood. It's been happening a lot lately, even when my ipod is not charging. By the end of the day, when i want to use it my battery is low because it's on even though i didn't turn it on. Sometimes, I caught my ipod being "ON" even though nothing triggered it because its on a lock mood. Any suggestion of what is wrong with it?

You most likely have an alarm set.
To check go to extras/clock/alarm and set it to off. Check the calendar also, extras/calendar/alarm.
