Ipod mini - Mac - Windows - FILES

Hi,
Does anyone know if files duplicate when using the ipod mini as a hard-drive?
For example, when saving a file (eg. word file) on the ipod from a Mac computer, will the file appear as duplicated when connecting the ipod to a Windows computer? (It doesn't duplicate on Mac however.)
I have been using this USB hard drive recently and when I saved files on it from a Mac computer, the files appeared duplicated when I saw it in Windows explorer.
Unfortunately, I made the mistake of deleting all the duplicated files (when using the Windows computer) only to find out all remaining files could no longer open; and this was not my USB.
I am considering purchasing the ipod mini (or shuffle). Could you tell me if I would expect this duplication of files (seen when connceted to a Windows computer) to occur when using the ipod as a hard drive? And if it does occur, how may I get around this issue?
Thanks for your help.
Alan.

Are the 'duplicate' files the exact same size? I'm wondering if they're some sort of 'information' file put on it by the MAC that the MAC file explorer automatically hides, but Windows doesn't.
Having said that, you'll have to format your mini on a PC to make sure both types of computers 'see' it . . . but other than the hassle of carrying around the cord, I can't see any other issues.
Good luck!

  • Switching iPod mini from windows to Mac, and how to transfer music files

Hi all. Brand new mac just getting it setup, an Imac, love it so far. I have an old ipod mini I got a couple years ago, it was setup as a windows mini. Plugged it into my imac and it doesnt do anything. As well, I never used itunes software on my old PC, I was using some kind of software called anapod that allowed me to put music in the ipod mini. I've got like 1200 songs on the mini and want to get that into the mac, plus be able to use the mini with the mac now, the pc is hitting the trash when I get all my old files cleared out of it.
Thanks very much for any help!

Hey, not a dumb ?, in fact a good ?......nope, I did not install any software at all, I just figured the imac would recognize it automatically.
We also got a brand new ipod nano, not the new video one, the older one, it was a back to school promo thing, anyways, I got that one all setup no problem, just plugged it in and was good to go.
So I have to install some software on the mac for the mini?
Been doing more reading, sounds like I might have to erase the memory of the mini somehow, not sure how?? But what about my 1200 songs on the PC, how do I get those over to the mac and into itunes?

  • Eureka! iPod mini + Mac OS 9 = Virtual PC!

Several months ago my girlfriend bought me an iPod mini as a birthday present. Great gift, except that I am still stuck back in the stone age with as old OS 9 box (beige G3), so compatibility was an issue, as the minis do not support OS 9 or USB 1.1 in any way, shape, or form, purportedly. For a while I was just using her Windows machine to sync my iPod, but I wan't happy with this solution.
I posted a question to this forum about the possibility of running the iPod through Virtual PC with Windows 2000, since that OS is supported. I got a couple of responses that suggested that it wouldn't work, but none of them provided a compelling reason.
Well, to all the naysayers: it works! I finally got up the nerve (and freed up the HD space) to install VPC 5 with Windows 2000 on my old G3. Then, with VPC in the foreground I took a deep breath and plugged in the iPod... and voila! It mounted as a drive in Windows, and I was able to transfer files to it using Anapod Explorer. And it charged the iPod, even though I was using USB 1.1 and received an insufficient power message when I plugged it in with the Mac OS. I was also able to access my iTunes library by setting VPC to mount my Mac volumes as shared volumes for the Windows environment, so I didn't even have to transfer my music to the VPC disk image.
An imperfect solution, to be sure. VPC is still slow as dirt on an old G3, and I experienced several crashes through this process, but I finally achieved a degree of stability that was good enough until I can get a new MacBook. I wasn't able to install iTunes because the version of Win2K I was using needed a massive service update that seemed doomed to failure because of the crashes, but I have no reason to believe that it wouldn't work.
So to anyone else who finds themselves in this situation, I won't make any promises, but this seems to do the trick for me.
Beige G3 Desktop   Mac OS 9.2.x

You can't use an iPod mini with Mac OS 9. First and second generation full-size iPods will work with Mac OS 9's iTunes, as will third generation full-size iPods which are running version 2.0x of the firmware.

  • Ipod mini versus windows vista

i just got a used ipod mini (4g version). i used the installer disc that came with it, udated itunes to 9.1, plugged my ipod in and nothing. the ipod comes up charging and on the main menu, but other than that, goose egg. is vista or windows media player messing with something or did i do something wrong?

    Hello pc1971,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried some of the basics such as plugging it into different USB ports on your computer or try a different USB Connector Cable?
Maybe try resetting the device with it connected to your system. To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, and then press and hold the Menu and Select (Center) buttons together for a few seconds until the Apple logo appears.
Otherwise, I would continue working through the recommend troubleshooting steps provided in this Apple support document.

Within a second or two of plugging my new iPod mini into the USB 2.0 port, my Windows XP system automatically reboots.

  • Using an iPod mini with Windows Vista

I just purchased a computer with Vista. When trying to install my original software from my iPod mini, I got a Windows message that said:
"Don't install this driver software. You should check your manufacturer's website for updated drivr software for your device."
Does Apple have update software I can download? I haven't been able to find it.

First, I should disclose I'm not on Windows, but I'm going to make an educated guess that all you need to do is download iTunes for Windows Vista. That will have any USB drivers in it to connect to the iPod via USB. Let me know if this works. Ref: http://www.apple.com/itunes/

  • IPod Mini freezing/windows won't acknowledge..

Hey guys, I need some help.
I was at the gym today using my iPod mini and while I was going through the songs, the iPod froze. I have tried reseting it by holding down the play and menu buttons at the same time, (Someone said this would work) but that didn't do anything. I brought it home and plugged it into my computer to reset or restore it (cuz at this point it doesn't matter if I loose all the songs), but the computer doesn't notice that the iPod is plugged in. Where do I go from here?
When I got the iPod I didn't buy the extra protection with best buy so If I can't fix it this way, I will have to buy a new one, which is money I dont have.
Can someone help me fix this?

Hello Jennifer, Mine too locked up and tryed resetting etc.
Still my computer does not acknowlege it.
I will be watching to see if anyone out there has a solution before i bring it back!

  • Switching Ipod mini from Windows to Mac w/o losing songs!!!

I just bought a new MAC and have spent the last two days trying not to lose my songs on my IPOD as I move it to my new MAC. How can I do this? I know how to format it to MAC, but obviously will lose all my songs when I do so. Ideas?

  • Connecting iPod mini to Windows PC

Pretty sure the iPod was originally formatted on Mac. When I plug it in to my Windows PC, I get a message that it isn't recognized and must be formatted. Don't have the music on a hard drive because the only MAC I have access to is an old iBook with an old OS. Is there any way to get the music off the iPod without an OS upgrade?

How have you been using the iPod up until now? Were you putting music on it on a Mac or on Windows?
Since a Windows computer cannot recognize a Mac formatted iPod without the use of some 3rd party software, you're a little stuck here.

  • Mac & windows file name sizes

I am using Dreamweaver 8 on the Mac for most all of my
commercial web development. I have a G5 connected to a local
network where I also run a Windows 2000 box as a web server to test
with. in a new project which I took over from another company they
    have page names such as
    new-england-lodging-2-doubles-1-twin.html
I downloaded the site and can see it all hunky-dorey on the
Mac. however when I try & upload these files to my testing
server, they won't go. I get the following error message:
    new-england-lodging-2-doubles-1-twin.html - error occurred -
An error occurred - cannot put
    new-england-lodging-2-doubles-1-twin.html. The specified path does
    not exist.
of course the path DOES in fact exist. in addition I can
create a file with this name on the PC side with no difficulty.
however when I do so the file name is displayed on the Mac side
    thus:
    NEW-EN~2.HTM
obviously this is not at all useful!
any thoughts or workarounds for this? use of these file names
is a requirement on this site for SEO reasons. I would prefer not
to have to do the development on the PC for a variety of reasons.
    thanks

That typically occures when reading a windows formatted disk.
    How did you
download the images to the Mac? Did you just grab then from
    the FTP server?
If so, the file names SHOULD have come across OK.

  • Mac - Windows File Sharing not working

    Hi there,
I want to use Lion's SMB File Sharing from my MacBook Pro (mid-2012) and my PC running Windows XP. Currently, my list of Windows users on my Mac is empty, and everytime I try to log in from my PC, I get a prompt asking me to log in, but no matter which passwords I enter, they don't work.
    Can anyon help me? Thanks!
PS A bit off topic, but my Screen Sharing option is missing too...

OK, good. (although, dd-wrt doess appear to be non-standard openSource firmware, making these routers harder to troubleshoot for us mere mortals).
But, yes about network name. if you can see the Mac in NetworkPlaces, this is good.
Thank you for clarifying bit-by-bit that the work network and the home network are your own setups, and the they're that identical.
As much information as you can provide is helpful.
I think you're going to find concrete clues to your problems...in the samba logs. it's not really a "test", it's merely looking into the logs during the time ( or finding the times where the connection fails)...and you will find the reasons that the connection fails.
    Good luck

  • Mac Windows file system

I have a 500gb external hard drive that I'd like to use on both my mac and pc and I'm not sure what file system to format it in or what program i should use to format it with? I believe Fat 16 or 32, I'm not sure can be formatted with disk utility but there are file size limitations.

Is there a file system with no space limitations?
Every filesystem has some size limit, and FAT32 is the best of those which can be read and written by Mac OS X and Windows out of the box. Third party software is needed to use any of the others.
