IPod mini new PC connection woes

Hi all,
Please help me out! I'm a frustrated uncle being nagged by his niece re her 2nd gen ipod mini and connection to her pc. Long time mac-user, so l've never encountered this kind of problem. I've tried the search function but this seems to be a problem not encountered before.
OK. when she plugs in her ipod to new pc (XP), it won't mount, recharge, or sync with itunes. she+I have followed the apple advice:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302898
Nothing seems to work. Windows device manager says a unknown device is attached but ipod doesn't show up where you would expect, ie, desktop, itunes. She's reinstalled itunes but she gets the following error:
"one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it."
Last week she came to visit and l plugged her ipod into my mac and it worked seemlessly. She went home and problem persisted. It seems her ipod will connect to her old pc but its faulty hence the new pc. Any advice welcome. If more windows details are needed, l'll ask her. sorry for the long confused post. Goes off to tear more hair out.... Paul

Hi and thanks Mark,
A comprehensive post that is incomprehensible to me!
Unfortunately, my niece is young and unable to understand your instructions and l'm on the other side of the country. I'll see if her dad can make any sense of this issue.
Thanks once again,
Paul

  • New ipod mini-will not connect to pc

Got new ipod mini today, have uploaded software & plugged it into USB-it is charging fine, but PC will not recognise it as new hardware and it is not appearing in the itunes menu thing.
We have a USB 2 card on the computer, and windows xp. The PC is about 3 yrs old. When I plug it into a USB 1 port the computer recognises it but says it needs a higher powered port-when i put it in the USB 2 ports nothing happens other than it charging itself. I have tried 3 different USB 2 ports. I have removed the software and re-installed it, checked the PC for windows updates and downloaded the updated ipod software from the apple website. When it is in the USB 1 port it shows up as hardware-but nothing when in the USB 2 port.
At the moment I am beginning to think the only solution is to chuck the ruddy thing in the bin....
Is it me, the computer or the ipod? any advice gratefully received.

    I just saw this:
"If 1 still not able to recongize your iPod by the computer then you have to put your iPod to DiskMode i.e. plug your iPod to the AC charges, do a RESET and press "Select"+"Play" keys, you will see the message "Disk Mode" in few sec. Then you need to connect your iPod with your computer, and hope that it will be recongized. If you are lucky to reach this stage then you simply need to restore your iPod updater, and your iPod should be back to normal. Please note that You may need to plug and unplug few times in order to let your iPod to be recongized."

  • IPod mini doesn't connect in Windows after doing an Update

    Please help!
I promised to put some music om my friend's iPod (1st generation) from my computer. When I connected it with my computer, i first did a new update. After that the problems began!! After completing the update the ipod showed a picure of an adapter, so i connected the iPod (2 days ago) to the adapter. But now, after reading of the internet about updating a 1st generation iPod, the logo still shows on the screen!! When i disconnect the iPod, it doesn't respond on anything but a reset, but when i reset it, i still get the picture of an adapter on the screen!!
I've tried all the 'solutions' that are written on the Apple website, but they didn't help. And i still can't RESTORE the iPod, because my computer doesn't recognize the iPod anymore AT ALL!!
My own iPod (2e generation) still works on Windows and is recognized everytime, but after the update my friend's iPod just doesn't get recognized on my computer!!
Can somebody please help me to get a solution for this problem?!

  • Ipod mini no longer connecting nor shows up in iTunes

My ipod mini was working fine but the past week I have been unable to get it to show up in iTunes! It is fully charged (I am able to charge via my computer) but still no go on showing up.
The "Update iPod" is greyed out and when I go to iTunes/Edit/Preferences/iPod it says that iPod is not detected. Please help!!!

Its 2:30 am but i somehow fixed it.... here's what i did:
Problem: itunes wasn't showing my ipod so basically they werent connecting
    What I did:
    First I went here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711
I followed: Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall , Restore
Didn't work so I went to the link that has this article under "An 'iPod Service Error alert' or 'Please Reinstall iTunes' message appears in Windows" (link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716)
    I followed the instructions there
Didn't work so I went to the link meant for LAPTOP owners link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301343
Somewhere between the "An 'iPod Service Error alert' or 'Please Reinstall iTunes' message appears in Windows" Link and the Link for Laptops it started working!
Try it out, let me know how it goes. GOODLUCK

  • Ipod mini won't connect to my computer

I've tried plugging my mini into my computer, and when I do nothing happens. The computer doesn't even respond to it being there. If i restart the iPod while it is plugged in, it will start to charge, but will not communicate with the computer, (sync itself, be found under itunes, etc.) I can't restore it, because it won't connect to itunes. Every once in a while it will work properly, but those times are random. Please help!

  • Ipod mini headphone jack connection and click wheel

I currently have a Second Gen. Ipod Mini. It's headphone jack occasionally causes the unit to pause when I have my noise cancelling headphones connected to it. This does not seem to occur with the original headphones. ALso, the click wheel sometimes "spases". For instance, when scolling fast though songs, it somethime stops, then continues very slowly through the rest of the menu. It is kinda annoying. Please help. Thank you.

There is an auto pause feature on the iPod so that when the headphones are disconnected, the iPod pauses. If the jack on the particular headphone you are using doesn't fit correctly, it breaks contact, the iPod "thinks" the headphones are disconnected and so pauses. This may be what you are experiencing, particularly as it doesn't occur with the supplied phones.
I have no idea what "spases" means, but try these.

  • Ipod mini won't connect after software update

I was using my ipod mini without problems on my mac powerboook until I downloaded and installed the latest ipod software updater yesterday. Since installing the application and clicking update in the software I can't get my computer to recognise the mini at all no matter what I do. Neither Itunes or the software updater sees my ipod and the ipod itself either says do not disconnect or shows a folder icon with an exclamation mark. Anybody know how to get out of this limbo state it seems to be in?

One thing you can try (AT YOUR OWN RISK - though I have done this on my own iPod mini using my PB and it has fixed issues similar to those that you are reporting), connect the iPod to your mac and then launch the disk utility app. If you're on a windows machine, this obviously won't help you although there may be a similar procedure. When the disk utility app comes up, if your iPod shows up in the left panel after a moment, highlight it by clicking on the name. If you try to verify it, you'll probably get a report of errors - don't panic - go to the erase pane and erase the drive (I think you can select either format with journaled or unjournaled - they both seem to work for me). MAKE SURE YOU"VE SELECTED THE iPOD DISK BEFORE YOU ERASE THE DRIVE!!!
After you erase the drive, you'll need to reapply the latest iPod update to restore the iPod OS (if you don't do this you may still be able to load music but it won't play and you'll still see the exclamation point display). After you reapply the update, you will hopefully back to normal. Re load your tunes and enjoy your iPod again!
    Hope this helps.

  • Ipod mini, new computer help

    hi,
I recently got a new computer, I downloaded itunes, then plugged in my ipod to get the songs on the new version. Well it would only transfer songs I got from itunes, not songs I got from my cds.
The problem is, when I transfered songs to my itunes, it took them off my ipod. So, now I have songs I purhased from itunes in my itunes library, and songs that I got from my cds on my ipod. How do I get all songs on both my ipod and in my library. Whenever I plug my ipod in to my computer, it doesn't do anything. It will recognize it, but it won't do anything with the songs, even when I tell it to sync.
I did download copy pod to get songs off my ipod and into my library, but now those songs are no longer on my ipod either, just in my library.
    Help!!
    Sam

For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
There is also CopyPod. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • Listening from iPod mini while connected

My computer speakers are broken so I was wondering how to listen to the music from my iPod mini while its connected to my computer and I'm doing stuff in iTunes. I can't find an option in iTunes and I've tried plugging the headphones straight into my computer but no luck. any ideas?

You will need to set the iPod to manually update your music. Then you will be able to listen to your iPod when it's hooked up to your computer.
If you're running iTunes 7.0 just follow these directions.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/7.0/en/2580.html
You'll then be able to browse and listen to your music on the iPod like you would if it was on your computer.

  • "Playlists no longer exsist" message in iTunes when syncing my iPod Mini

Whenever I plug my mini into my itunes the error message: "songs cannot be synced because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist".
I've tried restoring and reinstalling the software but it doesn't seem to be working. What's going on?

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod. If the playlist selected is deleted from iTunes the iPod no longer has a location to sync from and you get an error. (Syncing selected playlists by the way is a useful setting to use when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library). However you can make a new one or make use of an existing one.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Mini. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    Syncing Music to iPod
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.

  • Help! Can't transfer music to iPod Mini!

    Hi there!
I had some CDs that went with my iPod mini that I do not have with me right now for installation when I wanted to set my iPod up with my computer.
So instead of using the CDs, I downloaded iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ ... and I installed it on my computer. I have a Windows XP so I downloaded the one for Windows and so I installed iTunes.
I've got iTunes set up and added music to my library but now I want to transfer it to my iPod mini. I connected the iPod to the computer's USB port and something popped up saying I needed to update my version or something for my iPod...
So I did. I downloaded something called IPodSetup ... something similar to downloading the update for my iPod http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/iPodUpdaterXP/ ... this isn't the website I downloaded it from but I downloaded the update from Apple's site I think.
Upon installing that, it said that it was complete in updating... and so I reconnected my iPod and I get the "Please do not disconnect" ... and it pulls up a folder of some folders inside that for my iPod, and it doesn't stop saying "Please do not disconnect" ... I've looked in the mini-help adobe file but nothing there helped me either.
Please someone help! I'd love to transfer music again to my iPod. I've reset my iPod so far... thought that might help.

Yes. I have done that. I installed the update and then I connect the iPod to the USB port to the computer.
When I do that, at the top left of my mini, a circle rotates clockwise I think with two arrows, and it loads my iPod as a driver I think... atleast that is what I think happens. It opens a window as "my name IPO (F:)" and inside that window is three folders
    Calendar
    Notes
    Contacts
