Ipod mini plays broken metallic sound

it started when I downloaded the latetes version of itunes, 7.0.1. Also, the podcasts show in playlist but they won't play. First time problem was solved by itself, now I can't make it work again...

I have the same problem since my update to iTunes 7, and thus far I haven't found a solution. What I did find out is that it only makes that noise with .mp3 files. All the rest work fine. The dude from my local Applestore suggested to convert all my mp3 files to AAC files! Hahahaha. That's about 5000 songs!

  • Can iPod minis play movies- and can you put pictures on them?

Hi everyone, I updated my ipod recently and I was wondering if i can download pictures and movies on my ipod mini. I tried cheking on the official site for info on the mini but there wasn't anything. Also in the movies section they didn't mention if ipod minis are compatible with it or not.
I'm really confused because my friend said i should be able to download my pictures on to it, but i don't even think my mini has colour.
If anyone can answer my questions it would be great! thanks, topaz

The iPod Mini won't display photos or play video of any kind. The replacement for the Mini was the iPod Nano which has a colour display and will show photos which is possibly where the confusion had arisen. The second generation iPod Nano also has the wrap around aluminium body and comes in colours the way the iPod Mini did, in effect a mini Mini: Identifying different iPod models

  • IPod Mini playing only half a song

I'm having a problem with my iPod mini. I uploaded a bunch of cd's onto my iPod last night. During the last cd my computer and iPod froze for about an hour. So I did the unthinkable and unhooked my iPod. Then all of my songs wouldn't play, so I deleted everything. Now when I upload songs, only half the song will play or sometimes the whole song will play but then the next song will only play a few seconds. It's very frustrating! What should I do?

What I suggest doing is using your ipod updater software to reset your mini to Factory Standards. Then, if you receive any problems during updating, there should be a little green keyboard with an arrow on your start toolbar by the time. It's called "Safely Remove Hardware" and you can use that to end the connection with your computer. And usually when compuers freeze, they should go back to normal within at least a day at the longest.

  • IPod Mini plays and all of a sudden it pauses :(

    Gentlemen,
I have an iPod Mini. Issue is, that sometimes when I play a song and I am touching the earphones or turn the iPod, it pause the song. It gets boring after a while, cause you gotta push "play" every time. I must admit that the earphones are not from Apple. These are cheap ones.
    Big time Thanks in Advance

had the same problem with my IPOD NANO. I finally determined that it is a feature of the IPODS to go into Pause mode if you pull out the headset -- so that it does not keep playing (run down batteries or lose your place in audio books). I finally decided that it was randomly pausing due to the headset. Evidently some units manufacturing tolerance is off a bit and a little motion in the headset jack area makes the unit think you have pulled out the headset. I actually, used a very "soft" emoery board (not real coarse) and filed down the edges of the plastic surrounding the headset jack. I think this enabled the jack to make a more solid connection and have not had a problem since.

  • IPod nano plays really disturbed sound.

iPod nano 6th gen. Worked perfectly for a couple of weeks or so. Then, all of a sudden, this morning the sound has crashed.
Other function still works, actually it even plays the music or radio, just not the way expected.
The sound is higly disturbed, and it is hard to recognize anything. Although if the Low Bass EQ is chosen, the voice part is coming over just enough to hear that there is one. So i guess the problem is low frequences (might be middle as well).
Tried to change volume, the EQ, tried to restore settings (in all ways possible), turn it off and on again of course. Is there some hint yet to try? =)

Actually that was the first thing i tried =)
Three different ones headphones. And checked them after on PC. All of them works just fine.
    It didn't get wet.Certainly.
Although it was connected to PC, so maybe data cable caused this. Then again there's no evidence of some short-circuit (on the outer sides i mean, i have no idea what's going on inside this little wonder).

  • IPod music plays, but no sound on most songs after reset

Here's the deal. My 3G froze up on me last week. Since I didn't read the instruction book, but was conveniently near an Apple Store, I went in looking for help. The person at the front of the store was nice enough to reset my phone and show me how to do it in the future. Phone seemed to work okay for the most part; My apps wouldn't load at first, but downloading a new app cleared that problem up.
The problem I'm continuing to have is with my music. Some songs play, but most do not. The screen shows them playing but there is no sound. I tried Syncing the phone when I got back from my trip, but that did not help. I'd like to reset my phone, but my best set of contacts in the phone and I haven't figured out how to export them yet.
Has anyone experienced something along the lines of what I am describing? Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • My IPod mini appears to be working, but I do not get any sound.  I have reset it, but that didn't help.  Is it possible that when it was exposed to a lot of sweat it shorted the speaker card?

My Ipod mini will not produce sound.  I have reset it, still no sound.  The only thing that I think might be causing this (and I want to know if I am correct) I carried it in my  hand while walking in extream heat.  The perspiration may have gotten in the device.

Be sure to try another set of headphones, if you have one.
Since you already did a Reset, the next thing you can try is to go to the Settings screen on the iPod (from the main screen).  There should be an option at the bottom that says something like Reset All Settings.  Choose that option to reset iPod to default settings.
If that does not bring back the sound, the next thing to try is a Restore in iTunes.  Select the iPod in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  The Restore button is there.  This will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.  If the cause is a software or settings glitch, a Restore should fix it.  Try putting a few songs on the iPod to check if there is improvement.
If that does not bring back the sound, it is probably a hardware problem.  A fix would then require replacing whatever part is faulty inside the iPod.  It could be the headphone jack or something on the logic board.  Moisture getting inside could have caused the problem, but it could just be age; maybe the headphone jack is just worn out.

  • Clicking sound from ipod mini

    Hi,
Last week, my ipod mini started making clicking sound while I am using wheel click. I had it for just 5 months. Thank you.

Totally normal. Go to Settings -> Clicker -> Off if you don't like it. But it will turn itself back on again if you reset.

  • Ipod mini won't respond to ANYTHING!

I hope someone out there can help; for the last week my ipod mini hasn't worked - only had it 12 months.
At first ITunes wouldn't recognise the ipod so i could put some new tracks on it, later i went to play a song while it was charging but it was skipping through all the songs on the album without playing any, i know it didn't have much battery life left but like i said it was on charge.
Now after what seems like a life time of trying to restore (like the website says) & looking at the unhappy face on the screen there's a sound coming out of the USB connection (on the bottom) which is like what you used to get when a CD got stuck!!
When i am trying to restore i follow the instructions but it isn't recognising when i plug it in.
    Please help me!.......

Just to let you all know if this happens to you, your ipod mini is BROKEN! The only way to sort it out is send to Apple to repair - which, if out of warranty like mine, means you'll be paying for it and it'll cost you more than a brand new high range ipod!! Looks like i'll be using a different company from now on - thanks for the last 12 months but you've lost a customer now if it can't last more than 10 days after the warranty runs out!

  • SAME VOLUME LEVELS ON IPOD MINI...

Is there in any way transferred music from itunes to ipod be played on the same volume level?..my itunes plays it in all on the same level but when i transfer it ipod it changes...
    thanks for any help guys...
    :>

The question is how does the iPod Mini play songs at the same volume - in other words how do you avoid having to turn the ipod up and down when playing files back as some songs will be played back louder than others.
iTunes has a facility called 'Soundcheck' which adjusts song playback levels so that all songs are the same volume. The iPod does not seem to have this facility and it can be annoying.
Any help with this issue would be appreciated

  • Turning off ipod mini

think I'm going mad; I fully charge my ipod mini, play it short while, e.g. in car on way to work, turn it off then come to go home and the **** thing has turned itself on and been playing away and run the battery down. I've tried all I can to make sure its turned off but over a period of time its driving me nuts. Makes it useless as the battery is always run down or I get less than 1hr use before having to recharge! HWLP!

You most likely have the alarm set. Check calendar events also.

My latest problem is that the Apple site will not recognize my equipment by it's serial number.  I know the mini is old, but I like what it did for me and don't necessarily want to "upgrade".

This is the iPad in the Enterprise forum. You'll be more likely to get help with your issue if you ask in the appropriate iPod forum.

  • Given old broken ipod mini with new computer

my cousin had a broken ipod mini and she was given an ipod video. she gave me her old broken ipod mini and it was past her one year warranty. anytime i touch any button there is just the apple logo and a sad icon. i`ve tried going online to find a solution but i couldn`t fix it myself. i know what everyone would say, go to the store and fix it right? but i can`t, personal reasons. she gave me her ipod video iPod CD and i installed iTuens and QuickTime player. i plugged the ipod mini into my computer but it`s not there and it won`t charge. it won`t do anything and everytime i still press any button it shows the apple logo then a sad icon.

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote
