IPod Mini sound/volume is as soft as a mouse now

PLEASE HELP!
I have just got a replacement set of earphones sent to me by apple because the original one just stopped working all of the sudden. I noticed that my iPod mini's sound/volume is about 50% softer than when I originaly got it. I've tried using euPOD and goPOD and also the slider trick but it still doesn't take the volume back to the good old days. I know that it is probably because of the stupid new 26-03-2006 update with the volume limit on it, but i've also tried restoring the iPOD but to no avail either. I've tried everything already and nothing has worked. Does anybody know how I can get around this or I'll just have to throw my Mini in the trash and never buy anything from apple again! I also noticed that the volume slider doesn't actualy change the volume loudness until it gets past halfway.....so it doesn't actualy get softer or louder until I'm about halfway thru. I can't see why apple would want to implement such a ridiculous limit on what was essentialy a very good product.
Very Very Disappointed Apple

Gary,
There is a lot I don't know yet, but I definitely managed to raise the volume by cutting off the sound check and the equalizer when importing new stuff. As a test, I can now hear the words in an audiobook, although the volume is still on maximum for my iPod and car tape player. Unfortunately the old stuff still sounds too faint. (Is this iPod actually updating?)
There is a problem with my car tape player. I haven't bought a head cleaning kit yet, but plan to do so. I connected an FM transmitter and tested the sound -- it was a lot louder. (In my area, I cannot use an FM transmitter in the city because of FM interference. No empty stations. So I either need earphones or to make the tape player work. Or a new car
I don't know yet whether it's the Sound Check or Equalizer that makes the difference. I don't think I ever used Sound Enhancer.
You can raise the volume by selecting songs, going to "Get Info" and resetting the volume bar. This seems to make it louder on the Mac speakers. I cannot tell that anything is getting through to the iPod -- I simply don't hear it yet.
I don't know yet if importing when using Sound Check does anything permanent to the volume of the song. I hope not.

  • IPod/iTunes Sound Volume problems

I listen to my iPod Mini on my car radio, and used to enjoy turning the music up loud sometimes. Now I cannot GET it loud, even though I have the volume on my radio and iPod set to the maximum. For audiobooks, I can no longer hear the words clearly over the sounds of traffic. The volume on the iPod used to match the volume of the radio. Now it doesn't -- if I should flip to the radio without lowering the volume, I get hit with a blast of sound.
I think I might have done something in iTunes that is causing this. I cut off Sound Check and the equalizer. I also raised the volume using the Get Info options. It doesn't seem to have made any difference for the iPod when I updated. I still can't hear it very well through my tape adapter on the car radio.
Have I done anything mentioned above to cause or fix this problem? If so, do I need to delete everything from the iPod and re-load it?

  • IPod Mini Sound Quality

I have just bought a new 4gb ipod Mini from the Apple Store and would like to register my immense disappointment at the sound quality from the ipod. when playing songs back there is a noticeable distortion when using the EQ setting and to e lesser extent without the EQ setting. It's like listening to a cassette walkman with the asociated hiss. I have noticed other posts on this subject, SURELY this should be fixed by Apple. I now intend to return the ipod to Apple. Does the shuffle also suffer this problem?

I also noticed this problem on the iPod Mini. I have the second generation iPod Mini and it's great. It does, however has two flaws:
    1. Noticeable distortion when playing certain music.
    2. Not being able to utilitze your own custom EQ settings.
AS for solving the first problem above, with some experimentation, I've noticed that you can eliminate distortion by adjusting the volume levels for each individual file. It's done by right-clicking the file you want to adjust and choosing Get Info. On the one of the tabs, there's an adjustment for volume levels and EQ settings. Simply move the slider down and that should eliminate the problem. But the best way to handle this is to convert the file out to a WAV file and use a WAV editor to adjust the volume level. Then when you import and convert the file, that should eliminate the problem. As for the second one, I hope that there can be a way to import your own custom EQ settings in iTunes to the iPod. I find this my major qualm. The preset EQ settings are good, but they are no subsitute to being able to adjust the sound how YOU want it. I hope Apple will answer the cries for being able to import your EQ setting from iTunes to the iPod. All it would take is some programming and that should do it. Maybe on the next release of iTunes and the iPod updater? I hope so!!

  • IPod mini sound quality - any ideas?

I have recently purchased an iPod mini and have noticed that every now and again there is a crackling sound for about 2 seconds, sometimes longer. This always happens on the same songs, in exactly the same place. Would this be a hardware/earphone issue or could it possibly be that the CD I downloaded was scratched?
    thanks

Simple - try to Rip that song from the CD again and replaces it then listen to it.

  • Ipod mini sound issue.

    good morning.
Sometime yesterday morning it seems that the sound output balance on my ipod mini went far over to the righthand earphone. However I can't find anywhere within the ipod OS to actually adjust the balance. Also, the speaker balance on my ibook that I load/charge the ipod mini from still has optimal balance (centered)
Any ideas how to change the balance back on the mini? Any perticular reason why it may have changed on it's own?
    Thanks.

Hah, i'm a little embarassed that I actually neglected to think of that... Thanks my friend.
I guess I'm still a little stubborn. "No way, it's Apple! It has to be something else!"

  • Ipod mini is dead... what should i do now??

my ipod mini (1st gen got it as soon as it came out so its been ~3 years) gave me the sad face today at the gym and i think its dead. i tried connecting back into dock and it still has sad face and did hard reboot and still sad face. when i connect to my comp, it goes into recharge mode but its stuck at the first part of the recharge mode so it looks frozen and then switches between that and sad face. the hdd is also making loud noises that ive never heard before. i see there are replacement harddrives you can buy for it but will that work? i just replace the hdd and load the ipod firmware? the hdd are like $120 though! and the cheapest nano is like $150. should i try to replace hdd to 8gb or get the new 2gb nano? i was already planning on getting one of the regular 30gb ipods but i need something to work out with and i thought the regular ones might be kinda bulky on my arm to work out with? also as i said, i want to buy a regular 30gb ipod. i am impatient and need music asap and there are these vending machines at my school student center that dispense ipods. should i use this? if i ordered from apple.com it would take several days but i feel kinda weary of buying a $250 item from a vending machine. anyone ever done this?

Do these show you anything that you haven't tried yet?:

  • Help! Can't transfer music to iPod Mini!

    Hi there!
I had some CDs that went with my iPod mini that I do not have with me right now for installation when I wanted to set my iPod up with my computer.
So instead of using the CDs, I downloaded iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ ... and I installed it on my computer. I have a Windows XP so I downloaded the one for Windows and so I installed iTunes.
I've got iTunes set up and added music to my library but now I want to transfer it to my iPod mini. I connected the iPod to the computer's USB port and something popped up saying I needed to update my version or something for my iPod...
So I did. I downloaded something called IPodSetup ... something similar to downloading the update for my iPod http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/iPodUpdaterXP/ ... this isn't the website I downloaded it from but I downloaded the update from Apple's site I think.
Upon installing that, it said that it was complete in updating... and so I reconnected my iPod and I get the "Please do not disconnect" ... and it pulls up a folder of some folders inside that for my iPod, and it doesn't stop saying "Please do not disconnect" ... I've looked in the mini-help adobe file but nothing there helped me either.
Please someone help! I'd love to transfer music again to my iPod. I've reset my iPod so far... thought that might help.

Yes. I have done that. I installed the update and then I connect the iPod to the USB port to the computer.
When I do that, at the top left of my mini, a circle rotates clockwise I think with two arrows, and it loads my iPod as a driver I think... atleast that is what I think happens. It opens a window as "my name IPO (F:)" and inside that window is three folders

  • Ipod mini uploading issues

    Hi there.
Ive search and read pages upon pages to see if any other folks have had this problem. It seems that I am not alone (thank goodness) but even after lots of trouble shooting I can not seem to get my iPod mini to load songs.
Ive reset my factory settings three times. My iTunes is up to date as well as my software for the ipod mini. The error message that I get EVERY TIME I plug in my iPod mini in is "You do not have enough space on your iPod".
I have my settings set to only clicked songs - which the clicked songs is probably half the amount that would fit onto the mini (its a 4GB). I used to be able to at least drag songs into the ipod mini but it wont let me add any songs now. So with nothing in my ipod (really, I just set it back to factory settings) it tells me I dont have enough free space.
    Help!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, if neither of those helped the situation you may need to send it in again.

  • Can't download the new versions of itunes or software for ipod mini?

My problem started like a couple months ago. All of a sudden when I go to apple.com to get the new itunes versions or software for my ipod mini, I click on the link that says Download Now or whatever and I get this site that is half white and I get an error that says
    unspecified error
    line "whatever"
    Url www.apple.com/download
this happens everytime that I try to get the new software versions. And its kind of upsetting me b/c my versions are getting behind. Can someone please help?
And by the way I get these errors everytime that I'm on any apple.com site. Does apple use some script that my internet settings are blocking? If so what should I do about it? Please help.

What anti-virus/firewall are you using? Many people have had issues when using Norton Antivirus....If it is Norton do a search here. You might also try posting in the Installing/Upgrading iTunes forum. Look for posts from b noir, toonz, Buegie

  • Volume drops of own accord on Ipod mini

    Hi,
I am new to these forums and not the most technically knowledgeable person in the world so hope you can bear with me and someone can help me out.
I have an ipod mini, just over a year old, and have in the past few days begun experiencing a problem whereby the volume just drops of its own accord while i am listening to a song. It happens all the time, the moment i press play, I will turn the volume up to almost full and the minute i let go it drops back to no sound at all. whenever i put the volume back up the same thing happens, as if it recognises i have put the volume up but doesn't 'stick'.
I notice this happened after I put my ipod into a listening dock when i then went back to listening with headphones, however i have done this many times before and each time i put the headphones back in i just turned the volume back up and that was it.
i have tried several pairs of headphones so know it is not the headphones that are the problem.
has anyone else experienced this? is there anything i can do to fix it - or if not do you know if Apple will still do anything with ipod minis?
    Many thanks.

It seems that for the present at least volume limiting is only available on the 5th Generation iPod, the Nano and the shuffle: Setting the maximum volume limit on iPod

  • My IPod mini appears to be working, but I do not get any sound.  I have reset it, but that didn't help.  Is it possible that when it was exposed to a lot of sweat it shorted the speaker card?

My Ipod mini will not produce sound.  I have reset it, still no sound.  The only thing that I think might be causing this (and I want to know if I am correct) I carried it in my  hand while walking in extream heat.  The perspiration may have gotten in the device.

Be sure to try another set of headphones, if you have one.
Since you already did a Reset, the next thing you can try is to go to the Settings screen on the iPod (from the main screen).  There should be an option at the bottom that says something like Reset All Settings.  Choose that option to reset iPod to default settings.
If that does not bring back the sound, the next thing to try is a Restore in iTunes.  Select the iPod in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  The Restore button is there.  This will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.  If the cause is a software or settings glitch, a Restore should fix it.  Try putting a few songs on the iPod to check if there is improvement.
If that does not bring back the sound, it is probably a hardware problem.  A fix would then require replacing whatever part is faulty inside the iPod.  It could be the headphone jack or something on the logic board.  Moisture getting inside could have caused the problem, but it could just be age; maybe the headphone jack is just worn out.

  • Ipod mini appears as "New Volume" in itunes

After using my new ipod mini in itunes successfully, the ipod suddenly stopped appearing as "Mary's ipod" but instead is now "New Volume" and is not recognizing any songs on the mini. I can seemingly load music into the "New Volume" but this is not connected to my actual ipod as none of the new songs show up in there. I have checked that I have the latest updater and itunes, and when I got to File --> Update ipod, the latter is greyed out. Any ideas?

This is what you do to change "New Volume" back to "Mary's iPod". When "New Volume" is connected to your computer, double click on it. The cursor should appears, you should be able to backspace on your keyboard, erase "New Volume" and type in "Mary's iPod" and then press "Enter".
