IPod Mini Won't Turn Off

HELP! The iPod mini (about three months old, 4GB) will not turn off. It was fine until today. I have followed all the rest instruction, but it's still stuck on "on". The guidance in in the on-line mannual is -- well, you guessed it -- useless. Any ideas?

First make sure you have not locked it or put it on
hold, (check the top of it to see).
If that does not work try to hold down the pause/play
button for a few seconds, or reset it by holding down
the menu button and the select button for a few
seconds.
Hope that I helped you.
Thanks for suggestion, but that was in the PDF instructions, so that was the first thing I tried. Anyone with any other ideas?

My 6GB iPod Mini won't turn off! Everyime I try to turn it off it simply clicks back on and displays the "Recharging Battery" screen.
I have tried resetting my iPod with no luck. This is getting very annoying as I have to recharge my iPod on a daily basis.
    Please help!

I've kind of been keeping track and watching your point total all morning (or should I say afternoon?), waiting for this to happen.
I'm sure there's probably a huge party up in The Lounge about it, of course.

  • IPod classic won't turn off when plugged into a home theater dock; what's up? will it hurt to leave it on all the time?

I bought a new iPod Classic and it won't turn off when plugged into a home theater dock. Is this normal and will it hurt the iPod if i leave it on all the time?

    Hi there,
How old is your Classic? Often, after a couple of years, rechargable batteries begin to fail, especially after such a long period of inactivity. This happens with any gadget with this type of battery.
Try leaving it plugged in for 24 hours, and try again, to rule out that it isn't just really low on charge. If this doesn't help, it may be a good time to buy a replacement. New iPod Nanos and Touches will be released this October.
Below, I've linked to an Apple website which explains rechargable batteries, and why yours may not be working.

I hope this helps, and I hope upgrading your device will not feel like an unnecessary expense. Let me know if you have any more questions,
    Nathan

  • IPod video won't turn off

I have only had my 30G Video iPod since November and i have taken really godo care of it. Suddenly i take it out charge in my computer, eject and it won't turn off. If i hold pause or wait, it simply wont turn off, but everything elese works. Any advice? Is there a setting i messed up to make it do that or is it simply broken?

Make sure you don't have the hold switch on first.
Then hold down the Menu and Centre buttons at the same time until the Apple Logo appears on the screen. This will reset your iPod, it will not damage the contents of your iPod.

  • My iPod touch won't turn off. I tried and the turn off slide button in stuck in the of position, but it's still not turning off. It's been a few days please help!!!!

My white 4th generation iPod touchs turn of slide button is stuck on off but my iPod won't turn off for some reason and it only shuts off when the battery dies. It's been stuck like this for some time. Please please please help!!!!

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • IPod (5thG) won't turn off

I bought a leftover new fifth gen. iPod in Jan. '08, has been working fine. Today it was playing in my Bose SoundDock and then it just stopped. Now it will not turn off. I've tried holding the bottom of the wheel, nothing; it will not show on my desktop or iTunes when plugged into the computer; 'hold' button is not on.
Other iPod works fine in SoundDock. Any thoughts? Thanks!

It just happens sometimes. I've had mine for about a year and a half; it has "frozen" twice and required a Reset. I've had no other issues. If you have the 5th gen iPod with video, it has a little mini hard drive in it. Sometimes it locks up...just like a computer. Just needs a little restart (or Reset, in this case).

  • My ipod classic won't turn off and it's draining my battery

I bought my ipod in September 2007 and it worked fine until about 2 weeks ago just after the last software upgrade (not sure if it is connected) but now I can't turn it off.
I have also tried the sleep function but all that does is make it inactive whilst leaving the details on the screen and still draining my battery.
Since the batteries have a finite life is this Apples new way of getting our hard earned cash now that the battery life has improved!
Can anyone help me solve this problem I have tried reset (several times) and restore and neither solved the problem.
    Thanks

There are at least two diff probs here. 1) Ipod is hung and won't respond to turn off signal (pressing bottom of wheel) at all. This happens soemtimes when, for example, your ipod is connected to a docking device and you turn it off while pressing bottom of wheel wheel - then you immediately unplug it the ipod, which lights it up again -- sometimes it will won't then respnod to a a shut off signal by presing bottom of wheel. This prob has been recurring on ipods for years and can be fixed with a reset.
    2) When you press the bottom of the wheel, the ipod turns off for about a half second or so and lights right back up again. This prob i smore pernicious, has an unknown cause and is not fixed by a reset. If you restore, the prob can be fixed but only UNTIL you reload you music files onto the Ipod - then the prob automatically returns. Some suspecdt this prob has to do with a file problem and ipod's inability to appropriately deal with the file problem.

  • Ipod 20GB Won't Turn Off.  Any ideas?

Are you trying to get it to turn off without running the battery down? Have you tried reseting it?
If you're willing to wait, you could let it run down, recarge it, and see if the problem is gone.

  • Ipod photo won't turn off

I can't turn it off. The backlight will go out, then as soon as I lift my finger, it lights up again. I imagine it will turn off when the battery dies, but I'd like to figure this out. I can't reset because I can't turn it off.

    Welcome to Apple Discssions!
Why do you need to reset it when it is off?
    Try resetting it...

Then when it comes back on wait about a minute. Then try turning it off.

  • My Ipod touch won't turn off and i can't reset it.

My IPOD touch screen is blank.  The IPOD is not recognized by ITunes.  We have tried to turn off the IPOD and reset it, but nothing works.

  • My iPod mini won't turn on

I tried everything it said to do in the manual, but it still won't turn on. Anyone have any ideas on what to do?

Are you sure you're resetting properly?
Sometimes people find it easier to hold the MENU and SELECT (center) buttons at the same time if they set the iPod on a flat surface. Make sure you hold them for 6 - 10 seconds until the Apple logo pops up. It may take several attempts and is best performed while connected to power.
    Cheers!

  • Ipod Nano won't turn off anymore

Since a view days i can't shut down my ipod anymore. I tried to reset is, used the updater and even used the restore option.
But everytime i turn it off it goes on in about 5 seconds on its own. It only shuts down when the battery is empty.
I hope it's just an software error:(
    Greets Marcel.

    Hello Marcel,
And welcome to Apple Discussions by the way,
Why isn't there a button for ''this doesn't help me at all''?
    Because that would be rude.
Because this wasn't very helpfull since i've read all the help and support stuff from the apple website.
If that is the case, you should have mentioned that in your original post. How would we know what you have and have not tried? We all have to start somewhere when it comes to troubleshooting these kinds of issues.
I think it is a hardware problem since non of the software fixes work.
If you already know what the problem is, you should know what steps to take next. If you have a warranty, take advantage of it now. If not visit your closest Genius bar and have them take a look at or set it up to be serviced, either through Apple or a third party repair company.
    Best of luck.

  • My new Mac Mini won't turn off

About half the time the icons will clear off the screen on "sleep" or "shut-down", but it will go no further than that.
I end up shutting down by the main power switch. I know that is not good for the computer - and I may lose "stuff".
Please tell me the solution to this. I tried using the wait 60 seconds for the automatic shut-down - and that works only part of the time. I spend too much time feeling like screaming at this '09 Mini Mac w/ 10.5.7.
    Help!!!
    Dennis

Glad you were able to "fix" the hard drive.
Regarding knowing what programs are running ... try this:
hold down the CMD (Apple) key -- and keep holding it -- then press the TAB key. It will bring up icons of each running program. Each press of the TAB key (while you keep holding CMD key down) will move to the next program. When you let go of the keys, that will now be the "front-most" program. You can generally quit it by holding down the CMD key again, and pressing Q for quit.
(If you have a PC keyboard, use the Windows key instead of the CMD key.)
BTW, if you bought a current version of DiskWarrior it should work for any current Mac if you startup the Mac from the DiskWarrior CD. If not, the DiskWarrior folks should have an upgrade available.
BTW2, I can heartily recommend that you check out SwiftPublisher for your desktop publishing needs. You should be able to download a trial version from their site. It is easy, yet powerful:
