IPod mounting issues with iTunes 7.0.2

My computer is having trouble mounting my iPod. Initially, I thought the problem lied with the iPod since files appeared corrupted. But the files returned and iPod diagnostics gave it a healthy status. Today, my external firewire drive did not mount; yet the attached iPod appeared in Windows Explorer. In other words, the iPod attached to the external drive appeared while the drive was MIA. Weird!
After dis/reconnect the firewire cable, the external drive appeared, but the iPod faltered. Then I dis/reconnect the iPod and it appeared.
My music is on the external hard drive, which creates a problem for iTunes when the drive disappears. Basically, the iPod and the external drive need to be visible and accessible; or iTunes eats into CPU usage and resources. It’s even causing random blue screen of deaths, which do not occur with a disconnected iPod and external drive. These scenarios were apparent after upgrading to iTunes version 7.
Update: I have deleted all temp files; stopped the iPod service; uninstalled iTunes 7.0.2; deleted the iTunes folders; ran defrag and chkdsk several times; reinstall iTunes 7.0.2; and tried multiple cables and firewire/USB ports.
With iTunes removed, Windows XP instantly recognizes the iPod and external drive with no problem. After the iTunes 7.0.2 installation, the iPod goes on the brink. The situation has me frustrated beyond belief. Right now, I cannot recommend upgrading to iTunes 7.0.2 on Windows XP.
Please advice on these scenarios before I roll back to iTunes version 6.

I finally gave up on iTunes 7. After uninstalling iTunes 7 and reinstalling iTunes 6, my iPod became more reliable and Windows XP would consistently mount it. Even though iTunes 7 is well conceived, I founded considerably slower than version 6. The slowdown becomes apparent when iTunes automatically starts with connecting an iPod. Syncing the iPod with a large music database will cause a slowdown; even a crash.
I do not believe that iTunes is multi-threading well on Windows XP. My other syncing applications do not put a strain on my computer’s resources. My computer handles Photoshop 10 megapixel processing and a 2 gigs bi-directional sync over my network without a hiccup. iTune grinds my computer to a halt with just a 2 gigs syncing to the iPod. In addition, all startup items were disabled in the troubleshooting process.
Even though features like the Summary tabs and view by album art appeal to me, I will hold off on the iTunes 7 upgrade in place of speed and reliability. I have a couple recommendations as well. These suggestions are for people with large music databases and a large number of hard drive and firewire devices.
TURN ON – Automatically update selected playlist only
TURN OFF – Open iTunes when this iPod is attached
If you restore you iPod, leave your computer alone for several hours while iTunes fills up a large capacity iPod. It took me all weekend to reload my iPod.

  • IPod (with Dock Connector) 15GB firewire mounting issues with iTunes 7.0.2

Before I sent my iPod in for battery replacement I backed up my music and restored it under iTunes 7.0.2. I then disconnected it, put it in the box and sent it off. When I got it back, I charged it fully with the firewire cable and the wall charger then tried to mount it to refill it with music. It would not mount with the firewire cable. It is charging but will not show up in the finder or iTunes. I noticed that it would not turn off by pressing and holding the play/pause button. I figured it would eventually sleep so I put it into my laptop bag to bring with me to work.
I got to work and borrowed my buddies' USB cable and the iPod is completely dead. Dead like not even a boot screen. Apparently it can no longer sleep and completely discharged during the night. Additionally, the USB cable doesn't seem to be powering or charging it. I plugged it into my workstation using the firewire cable and although it will charge it still will not mount.
After about a half an hour of charging I disconnected the firewire cable and plugged in the USB cable. The iPod mounted into iTunes. I figured I would restore the iPod again to fix the firewire issue so I clicked Restore. I then got a message saying "You must connect using FireWire to restore the iPod." I cannot connect using Firewire.
To recap, I cannot charge over USB, I cannot update over USB and I cannot mount over Firewire.
I reconnected using USB, Quit iTunes without dismounting the iPod then tried to erase the iPod with Disk Utility, which failed. Next the iPod wouldn't even mount under USB so I went into iPod diagnostic mode and found a new line item labeled USB DISK which forced the iPod to become visible to Disk Utility again. I repaired the iPod disk and it will once again mount under USB but will not charge and will not restore.
I have scoured the apple.com site to try and find a way to downgrade my iPod to what it was before 7.0.2 but cannot find anything.
iTunes 7.0.2 has rendered my iPod totally useless. It was bad enough having a battery that was toasted and was glad to finally get that taken care of but now that I have a battery that works I have software that cannot mount via firewire and will not turn my iPod off and drains the battery. Plus with no way to go back to a previous version Apple has rendered my iPod useless.
    Help!... please.

    Hi Kenekeu
I just wanted to chime in and bump this thread. Although I've posted here several times about this exact problem, with no solution found yet, and no response from Apple. I tried rebooting into windows (via bootcamp) and reformatting my ipod from there. However when I downloaded the older version of the ipod updater, i was told that it was expired and a newer version was available (sigh). So I now have a windows formatted ipod that still won't connect via firewire.
I am still able to mount and transfer songs via USB in mac OSX. Luckily I had one of those dual usb/firewire cables, which plugs into the plug charger via firewire, and into the computer via USB at the same time, so my ipod doesn't lose charge.
Hopefully there'll be a fix soon, because this is really frustrating. I've had this ipod for a couple years, and was always proud that it lasted this long... and now this.

  • IPod classic issues with iTunes 9 just may be disk problems in ipod

I have done extensive testing for several days now on this iTunes 9 issue with iPod Classics. I used 3 different computers, 1 Macbook Pro, Windows 7 and XP with iTunes 8. I had 2 - ipod classic 80GB and 2 - ipod 5th Generation 30GB units people gave me to look at.
It would take too much typing to describe all the restores, syncs, formats, copies I did over the past few days.
Bottom line: Using PC utilities I began to believe the iPod hard drives had bad sectors. I trusted the disk testing because I got different results from different ipods. The problems I experienced and what I have read here are consistent with what you would expect from disk problems and S.M.A.R.T. technology on the drives.
If bad sectors on a drive are dealt with by S.M.A.R.T. I would expect delays in accessing those sectors to occur.. resulting in delays to restore, delays to sync, delays to even skip songs on the ipod itself.
What may be the case is switching to iTunes 9, discovers when it trys to use the bad sectors. Maybe iTunes 9 is more timing temperamental. I have iPods that pass all disk tests that work fine with iTunes 9 on mac and PC. The other 2 ipods reporting bad sectors on a disk test, can restore, but syncing 3000+ songs is nearly impossible. Sync delays were consistent with where I would expect bad sectors to exist in the process. Delays I noticed just copying a folder to the ipod in disk mode were consistent with the delays that occur syncing in iTunes.

    It is a possibility...
I will state though that in my opinion the main problem is that itunes 9 is far less fault tolerant than prior versions and is far more likely to preemptively send an ipod into recovery mode when running into a problem when a ipod is plugged in.
I'd had a couple of incidents in prior versions of itunes when it flashed an alert message that it was having trouble accessing the ipod. Usually unplugging and reconnecting the ipod resolved the issue. Unfortunately this system of handling the issue does not work at all with itunes 9. What happens is that the next time you plug in the ipod it is preemptively sent into recovery mode.
I've had my ipod sent into recovery mode 7-8 times since I Installed Itunes 9. The last 5 of those in the last week. I've already done the reinstall itunes 9 from scratch and I still had to do a recovery of the ipod last night. Today I bought a new interface cable on the theory that my old cable might be defective. I've been able to plug it in tonight without itunes complaining about being unable to access the ipod

  • Ipod sync issues with itunes 11

    Hello,
My classic iPod syncs very slowly with iTunes 11, it starts out syncing (2 songs) & then just "sits" with no progress.
iPod sofware is up to date, version 1.1.2.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks

I figured out how to put it in recovery mode and I'm starting over, this ipod is more work than it's worth.

  • IPod syncing issues with iTunes 10.3.1

I was trying to sync my iPod Nano this morning to add some new songs. When it gave me the error message: "Attempting to copy the disk "xyz Ipod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." I did a restore on my Mac Mini running iTunes 10.3.1, with no success. I tried to perform a restore on my MacBook Pro that was running iTunes 10.2.2. and it was successful. I then tried to sync with the Mac Mini again and got the same error message. Obviously Apple has an issue here. So if you have access to an older version of iTunes, try that as a workaround.
    running MacMini OSX 10.6.8

Had the same problem with my iPod recently. The problem was due to a bad photo file and the -39 error appeared after synchronizing photos.
The problem was resolved this way :
In iTunes,I went  to the photos tab and unchecked the option to sync photos.I chose "Apply the settings" and synchronized. I re-enabled that option and synchronized again. All my photos were synchronized on my iPod and error -39 was gone !
    It's worth a try....

  • Ipod connection issues with itunes

i know, i am the one-thousandth person to write in about a connection issue, but i just bought a 8gb nano. my pc is recognizing the ipod, but itunes does not automatically start.
instead, if i manually try to start up itunes, it either doesn't start at all, or when it does, it immediately locks up. or it will try as hard as it can to sync and then locks up.
once i disconnect the ipod from the usb port, itunes will come back to life. i have done EVERYTHING the support pages say, reinstalled itunes, dumped temp files, stopped conflicting software...everything short of sending in the new ipod to be serviced. please if you have run into this particular problem and/or you know how to fix this issue, please respond
i don't really want to send a brand-freaking-new ipod off to be serviced b/c i think this is a software issue.

    Hello lalajamjam,
It sounds like you've done a rather good job of troubleshooting already. Other than testing to see if the issue is user-specific per ( http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717 ) and possibly testing the Nano on another computer, there are few additional steps to try prior to getting it serviced.

  • New ipod sync issues with itunes libraries

my old ipod classic screen has shattered and a friend has given their old ipod classic, which has been erased of old data, so it is clean.
the ipod connects fine, but when i go to "sync" in "file" it won't let me, i restored the factory settings on the ipod via "settings" and "reset settings", and restarted pc as itunes requested, but the only way to transfer the music was via "autofil" from "devices" menu, but i still can't autofil movies or tv shows.
i noticed when i go to "file" it now says "sync songs" rather than simply "sync" but it still won't give me the option to sync, so how do i sync my whole library with my ipod.
    any advice would sincerely appreciated.
    many thanks.

Not sure why this is occurring - no such problem with my iPad, nor with 3 different iPhones used over the last 4 years.
Do you have manually manage music and videos selected under the Summary tab for your iPad sync preferences, or are do you have Sync Movies selected under the Movies tab along with Sync Music under the Movies tab and Sync Apps under the Apps tab?

    1.
well to get it you need to go to lyrics.com and look for the song you want. You then copy all the lyrics then you go to itunes and right-click and go to get info. Then after you go to lyrics and paste it into the box. Then you sync. the song to your ipod touch and on your  ipod touch you tap the song once and You have lyrics to your ipod touch.

  • Problem with versioning on iPod, backwards compatibility issue with iTunes

i apologize in advance because i'm sure this has been asked time and time again, but i did attempt several searches.
the search function is very muddled and does not narrow down the results very well at all
    here's the situation.
from all accounts i've heard lots of people having issues with version 7 of iTunes.
i'm a simple kinda guy who definitely believes in the age old phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
    so i've stuck with v6.
i recently got a new laptop along with my PC. so i downloaded and installed the latest iTunes without thinking twice.
i had completely forgotten about my concerns from hear say about v7 issues.
i plugged in my iPod and it proceeded to completely erase all of the media on it and then load all media that was on my laptop in place of it.
"well that's a cool new feature", i thought.
after my initial frustration wore off, i immediately uninstalled v7, deleted the .itl file and installed v6.
everything was all fine and dandy. v6 works perfectly on the laptop with no hangups.
    here comes the issue...
i plug in my iPod to begin rebuilding my media onto it after the completely unauthorized deletion, creditted to iTunes v7.
as it autoplays and iTunes v6 opens i'm prompted with this error:
"The iPod [my ipod] cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 7.0 or later.
Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."
i've attempted everything i can think of to completely erase my iPod of any "versioning".
    - i reset it using the "select/menu" button method
    - i reformatted it through XP disk manager
    - i reformatted it through context menu in my computer explorer window
    - i completely just deleted the "iPod control" directory in the iPod explorer window when clicking through the my computer directory
    i'm at a loss.
i cannot figure out a way to get my iPod to function with iTunes v6.
and again, i'm really hoping to avoid going to v7.
    iPod information:
    2nd generation iPod nano 4GB
thank you in advance for any and all information/advice

I am guessing that you used your iPod enough with iTunes v. 7.x to update the firmware to the latest version. That being the case, reformatting your iPod won't "undo" the firmware update, so your only choice now is to update your iTunes software to v. 7.x.
FWIW, iTunes 7 is a vast improvement over previous versions of iTunes. I use it on both Windows and OS X, and without bugs in both environments.

  • Issues with iTunes Media Folder resetting to default location

This is my 1st post to the Apple Support Community (the problem I have is with iTunes, but I believe it also has to do with the way OS X Lion is setup and the way Networked Drives are mounted in it) ...so I hope I've posted this to the correct place. Thank you in advance for any help I'm going to get here. I have no expirience with Mac OS X's (coming from a Windows background) so please bear with me, but I am a S/W Tester by trade so I'd like to think I'm resonably IT literate.
    ISSUE:
I have a problem with iTunes and my Media Folder resetting constantly - my Setup is a MacBook Air, with an Apple Time Capsule 2TB which is providing my Wifi Network.
I want to setup iTunes so that it will permenatly point to my Data Folder on the Apple Time Capsule, so that when I download purchases, synch iPhones, or rip Music it will end up on the Apple Time Capsule and not on the MacBook Air's SDD Drive
    I though I had managed to do this, but after I shut down the MacBook Air, and then logged back in to rip some music, iTunes had repointed to the MacBook Air's SDD, and all the CD's i ripped were saved there instead of the Apple Time Capsule. So far I have done the following;
    STEPS CARRIED OUT SO FAR:
    1) Connected the MacBook Air to the Wifi Network provided by the Apple Time Capsule - I can see the Time Capsule in the Finder app.
    2) Gone to GO MENU > LOCATE SERVERS and selected the top level DATA FOLDER on the Apple Time Capsule....I believe that I've managed to create an ALIAS (Shortcut?) that points to this, and it's on my Desktop.
    3) Next I went to SETTINGS > USERS > and made sure that ALIAS (Shorcut?) to the DATA FOLDER on the Apple Time Capsule is always loaded up on startup for my UserID
    4) Next, I found my iTunes folder, and MOVED it from the MacBook Air SDD to the Apple Time Capsule's HDD over the Wifi Network.
    5) I then went to ITUNES PREFERENCES and changed the MEDIA FOLDER it pointed to, from the MacBook Air's SDD to the one on the Apple Time Capsule.
    6) Then I logged out and shut down the MacBook Air.
    7) I powered on the Macbook Air, and logged in, then ripped some music - I then found that iTunes had created a new iTunes Folder for my User on the MacBooks SDD and all the CD's I ripped had been saved there. Also under the ITUNES PREFERENCES menu, it looks like iTunes had reset the location of the MEDIA FOLDER...
I don't know if this is an issue with iTunes or not - I'm assuming it's a setup issue on my part, and that maybe I haven't created a permenant link to the Apple Time Capsule as I thought I had. If it helps I was attempting to do something similar to whats described in this YouTube video; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mA399lEXRTE
    Thanks again for any help
    Regards

if you really moved your entire iTunes folder, the next step needs to be launching iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, clicking on choose library at the prompt, and selecting the iTunes folder you moved to the TC.
as for auto-mounting the TC's disk on startup, you might find this discussion interesting.

  • How do I get rid of lip-sync issues with iTunes 10.2.2.12?

    Hi Everyone.
    Firstly, a very Happy Easter!
I'm having lip-sync issues with iTunes playback on my PC. The video is largely smooth with the occaisional choppiness when the CPU is made to work hard. (Playback on my iPod Touch is fine).
The system stats for my PC are at the bottom of the post.
The sound is produced through a Creative Live Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 card.
Video is through a NVIDIA Geforce 6200 with 512Mb of RAM. (All video and audio drivers are up to date).
The physical set-up is that I have iTunes installed on the C drive and my media installed on an external USB hard-drive.This isn't just a problem with 10.2.2.12 - it's been there for the last few updates.
I suppose my main questions are:
Should iTunes and my media be on the same drive? (Which would mean the external drive as I'm short on space on the C drive).
Is there some combination of settings in QuickTime that will solve this? (I've tried different combinations, but it doesn't really help).
Is the spec (below) of my PC causing any issues.
Here's an Easter Egg for anyone able to help!!
    All the best

Select *List view* instead of *Album list view*. These are in the View menu or the boxes next to Search, on the right top of iTunes.
and the column next to it with a number in it that I have absolutely no idea what it's for. I want those two columns OUT.
In List view, you can turn off every column (in menu View > View options) except track name.

  • Updating Issue with iTunes 7.0.1.8

A few weeks ago I made the jump to the newly released iTunes 7.0. I had a slew of issues with this update (which by the way Apple has still not provided a working solution for), which I addressed in detail in this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3170496#3170496
Today I updated to the new iTunes 7.0.1.8. There were no issues during the installation itself, however afterwards is a completely different story. When I attempt to open iTunes, I receive the following error message: "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."
My first thought was to see if Quicktime is working normally. It is. No problem there. I thought perhaps I should try repairing the installation. So I went to Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Software > iTunes. I attempted to use the 'repair' option. This did not work at all.
At this point I restarted my computer and uninstalled iTunes. I restarted once again and reinstalled. When the installation had finished I received the prompt, "would you like to run iTunes after the installation is completed?" I clicked 'yes.' iTunes opened, no problem.
I closed iTunes and attempted to reopen it normally. It would not open, instead giving me the same message: "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."
I thought the previous issues with iTunes not recognizing my iPod were bad enough but now I can't even open iTunes at all. This is absolutely unacceptable on Apple's part. It was bad enough that they released 7.0 with all its bugs, but at this point they should have their act together. Instead the problems are getting worse.

Please let me know if I can get rid of this feature.
    You sure can.
iTunes View menu > Hide MiniStore will do the trick.

  • How can i make my ipod touch sync with itunes again?

recently, my whenever i plugged in ipod touch to itunes on my desktop or laptop computer it does not sync nor shows that itunes has recognized it. How can i fix this?

iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    Or
    See
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    - I would start with
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
    - Then do the other actions of:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
paying special attention to item #5
    - New cable and different USB port
    - Run this and see if the results help with determine the cause
