Ipod Nano 2g is not reconized by Windows Vista or Explorer

Hello I just got this iPod from my friend and i went to go lock it and I totally forgot the password. And I haven't even added any music yet. And I asked my friend if he knew the password and he said no so I am stuck with locked ipod and a Windows Vista not picking it up. I tryed the 5r's can't get it to to restore because window vista don't see it.

The friend that you got the iPod from...were they using a PC or a Mac? If the iPod is not formatted for a PC then that could be the problem. Try looking at the following article to see if it helps determine the issue. iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes for Windows

  • Ipod Nano 4th Gen not recognised in Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Itunes and screen blank

    Hello,
I have a quite old (3-4 years old) iPod Nano 4th Gen.
The screen is blank, which means it needs charging. When I plug it into my laptop/computer then it doesn't show up which im assuming is because it needs charging.
When I plug it into my plug charger (plugged into a wall) nothing happens.
I think this is because the cables (I have 3- 2 computer USB cables and one plug charger cable) being too lose and not connecting to the iPhone fully.
I have looked at all the articles, I have done the R's, I have tried to restore it, I have pressed the clickwheel and centre button together and I have toggled the hold switch.
If anyone can help it would be appreciated! (And please save the "take it to apple support" etc... comments for if you can't think of anything else- not being rude but I know this)
    Thanks

Hey, I hear ya and can sympathize. I have the same
issue. The difference is that my computer can "see"
    my ipod but it refuses to show up in itunes itself;
therefore, I can't put anything on the ipod (from the
computer) and vice-versa. Apple support is clueless.
This is very frustrating to say the least. Itunes
keeps telling me that my ipod is synced to a
"different" computer, which isn't true. It's the
same computer. The difference is that when I first
got the 'pod and used it with this computer (and
everything worked fine), I was running XP. I
installed Vista and after that, all the problems
started. If I ever get this resolved, believe me,
    I'll post something here.
I'm guessing that somehow, itunes "sees" what
computer it's hooked to by "looking" at something in
the OS. Change the OS and it "thinks" it's seeing a
    "different" computer.
    Try reformatting it.

  • New ipod nano 2nd gen. not loading onto windows or itunes

I just got an ipod nano 2gb 2nd gen. (refurbished from apple). I updated my former version of itunes (my daughter has a 1st gen. nano, so she's been using itunes with her's with no problems..) to the latest version like the quick start guide says. Plugged in the ipod to the usb port on the back of the computer and the setup wizard pops up, asking to install the software for the device. I try letting it auto search, which it finds nothing, and I get a message saying "your new hardware may not work properly.....". I checked the device manager and the ipod is listed under "other devices" with a question mark by it. I checked to make sure my daughters 1st gen. nano works with the updated itunes and it does with no problems. Now what?
Ipod Nano 2gb 2nd gen.   Windows XP
    Dell Dimension 4600   Windows XP

I also have a 2nd generation, which I purchased after my ipod Shuffle stopped updating. We plugged it in, followed the instructions but the Nano was not recognised by my PC, however, my nano does get recognised on my husband's pc. My daughters ipod and my old shuffle both are still recognised on my pc. I need to delete the shuffle, as it is faulty, but more importantly, I need to get my pc to recognise the nano. Please help.

  • How do I Move Music from iPod Nano(2nd Gen) to Computer with Windows Vista?

I just got a new computer due to my old computer crashing so I'd like to transfer my music from my iPod Nano 2nd Generation to my new computer so I'll have a backup. I followed the directions listed below but they didn't work. Is it possible that it didn't work because I'm using Windows Vista? Is there anything else I can try?
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
2c --- Click OK to store changes
3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
5 - Within iTunes: Edit=>Preferences=>’iPod’ tab: switch iPod to ‘Manually manage songs & playlists’ – click ‘OK’
    6 – Eject iPod
7 – Close iTunes, then reopen iTunes and attach the iPod (it’s in manual sync now)
    8 – File=>Add Folder
9 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod (or the lower ‘\iPod_Control’ sub-folder)
    10 - Click OK

All of the following programs should work with Vista.
Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.

  • IPod shuffle 2nd Gen not appearing in Windows Vista

    Dear All:
I have a 2nd Gen shuffle that will not show up in iTunes or Windows on a Vista Home Basic machine. Vista finds an unrecognized USB device and cannot find a driver. The orange light on the shuffle blinks, and the Vista device manager keeps detecting an unknown USB device, but it goes no further. I am not receiving the "-50" error; the shuffle never shows up in either Vista or iTunes.
I have contacted Apple tech support and searched these forums with no results.
    I have also:
-Run a different iPod (30GB video) on the same Vista computer. The 30GB video iPod works fine.
-Run the iTunes diagnostics on the same Vista computer on both the 30GB video (30GB iPod works fine) and the shuffle (shuffle not detected).
-Reinstalled iTunes from scratch on the Vista computer (3 different times) as described in
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305042
    shuffle not detected.
-Restarted the iPod service on the Vista computer as suggested by
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
    shuffle not detected.
-Reset the shuffle and plugged back into the same Vista computer. shuffle not detected.
-Tested on a different USB port on the same Vista computer. shuffle not detected.
-Tested on a MacBook Pro in the same shuffle cradle. shuffle works fine.
-Tested on a Windows XP box in a different cradle. shuffle works fine.
-Searched the mother board manufacturer for updated Vista drivers. None available.
Is there another step that I am missing, or is iTunes, the iPod service, and Vista just not talking on this particular computer?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • First Generation Ipod Nano gives error message when using Windows Vista

I have a dual boot PC running XP Home and Vista Home Premium. My three kids have Ipod Nanos. Each kid has their own user profile on the PC. The later generation Nanos (2) work with Vista perfectly.
The first generation Nano causes an error message when you connect the Ipod to the PC while running Vista. If you run the XP and associate the Nano with XP everything syncs perfectly with no error messages.
Conclusion: Early Nanos work with XP, but do not function properly with Vista.
Request of Apple INC. - Fix this to work with Vista, or send me a new Ipod free of charge.

All of the following programs should work with Vista.
Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.

  • IPod Nano 2G is not seen by windows or iTunes

    ***
I have tried the 5R's and re-installed iTunes and used a different usb cable and most of the tips posted here. Nothing helped. The kicker to the whole situation is when I tried exchange it, all the stores are sold out. Thanks apple, thanks for a great Christmas.

Well, I have the iPod 5th Generation 30GB version which cost quite a pretty penny. It worked just fine right out of the box. I got my little daughter the 2GB nano because she is so young and wanted one like daddy. Well, I guess you get what you pay for. My nano shows up as "Banged out" in Device Mangler and Windows doesnt recognize it. It's pretty **** frustrating if you ask me. I have tried the 5 R's until my fingers are falling off, and nothing has worked. I plugged it into every USB port on my laptop, bought a 7 port hub and plugged it into every single port and tried it 7 times in each port. I think I can safely say that this POS isn't worth a bucket of spit, but ****, what should I expect for forking $150 over to Apple. I guess you have to buck up to $250 before you get anything worth having, and that includes it's accessories. So, now what? Keep perusing these boards and just hand it off to my 8 year old daughter on Christmas day? This is patently insane. There is no reason whatsoever these things shouldnt work on any machine that has a USB port. It's a joke and explains why MS always dominates them in any endeavor.

  • Ipod Nano 2GB Can Not Reformat, Tried 5 R's, Explorer says Please insert dr

I'm not sure if my fiance' unplugged my ipod while it was updating a podcast or before it was done or not. It went into the showing the picture of the disk and the url for the ipod website. I have tried the 5 R's. I tried restoring, and it says it has been wiped clean, but that it needs to stay plugged in while restarting. I left it plugged in for around 13 hours and the message from the updated utility stayed the same. I have tried the various options, such as trying to rename through windows explorer or the admin options from the control panel but the disk is not readable and can not be formatted. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I have not installed any updates lately. I tried using the updater utility as I said, the "update" option was grayed out but the restore option was available, which I used. I also made sure all programs were closed out that could be accessing the Ipod. Thanks in advance.

dont worry. my ipod JUST did that afew minutes ago. it went dark and wasnt being recognized by itunes. its my third day with it so i was freaking out. but all i did was hold down the menu button and the center button at the same time for afew seconds and it snapped right out of it. it may not even work the first time so keep trying. once you see the apple logo youre okay. but if nothing shows up just take it back to an apple store[not where you bought it mostlikely] and they'll return it and get you another. hope it helps.
