IPod nano (2Gen) - 50% volume missing

Hi. I recently replaced my 4Gnano (1st gen) with a 4G nano (2nd gen) after the original was stolen. I used the new nano last night for the first time and was surprised to find that the new nano has about 50% of the volume of the original. I confirmed I have the latest software, 1.1.1. As well, I confirmed the Volume Limit was set to max.
To make sure I just didn't forget how the original nano worked, I directly compared volume between the original (friend's nano) and this new second gen nano. I had others listen and compare as well where we all concluded there is at least a 50% drop in overall volume capability.
Thoughts? Any chance the software has internally limited the volume somehow? Is the volume profile (min --> max) inherently different in the second generation nano?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
Dave

No.
I am referring to the volume limit on European iPods.
A French law passed in 1998, set a volume limit of 100dBs for portable music players (walkmans). Apple specs call out 104dBs for the iPod.
http://www.doctissimo.fr/html/sante/audition/sa5477_auditiondecibels.htm
"Un arrêté du 24 juillet 1998 complétant un article du code de la Santé publique (article L44.5) fixe un seuil de 100 dB à la puissance des baladeurs."
(A decree of 24 July 1998 supplementing an article of the code of the Public health (L44.5 article) fixes a threshold of 100 dB at the power of the walkmans.)
Apple posted a firmware update to Apple-France on 8 October 2002. This limited the volume in accordance with French law.
Most likely, after some research, Apple found EN 50332-1 and went with that.
The French law was pushed/developed into EN 50332-1 - Sound system equipment. Headphones and earphones associated with portable audio equipment. Maximum sound pressure level measurement methodology and limit considerations. General method for "one package equipment"

  • My iPod nano 2Gen doesn't have volume limit

im a first time ipod user.
    got mine just this week.
i find the volume too low (even set at max) then a friend told me i should set the 'volume limit' to maximum then i discovered mine doesn't have that option!
where can i download that feature is it's possible?
    thanks

  • IPod Nano 2gen and Honda Music Link 2.0 compatibility issue

I have compatibility issue with my iPod Nano 2nd generation and Honda Music Link 2.0 adapter.
My iPod is on 1.1.3 firmware (the latest), and it doesn't work with Honda Music Link:
I have iPod Nano 2nd Generation (Firmware 1.1.3). I created playlists on iPod like it is written in documentation (Honda1, Honda2, etc.).
I connect iPod, press CD/AUX and it flashes CDC 9 for a while then says CDC Error.
Music is playing but I cannot control iPod from Head unit buttons. The only way to change tracks/playlists is to do it directly on iPod.
Note that when iPod is connected there is no "Honda" logo on it as it is supposed to be.
I discovered that iPod Nano 2gen work with Honda Music Link if the iPod is on 1.0.2 firmware.
Moreover Honda Music Link even doesn't work with other iPods which are on latest firmware version. So the only problem to solve the problem I see is to downgrade the iPod. Buying new one won't solve the problem.
Could you provide me this old firmware 1.0.2 for my iPod Nano 2gen (ipsw + signature files)?
If you cannot please provide me a way how to solve my problem.

I suspect that the dealer is correct.
My wife has a 2006 Accord EX Sedan and the MusicLink ceased to work with her 5G iPod after iTunes 7 and Firmware 1.2 (flashing 6 in AUX-CD mode). It does however still work with my first gen. iPod Nano.
I prefer to use the MusicLink without the TTS software, and have therefore not tried MusicLink 1.3.

  • IPod Nano losing sound/volume

Has anyone had an issue with their iPod nano losing sound/volume? The device works upon initially booting it up however randomly the sound will instantly and for no reason start to decrease down to where no sound can be heard. This usually occurs when working out so I've wondered if there is a reported issue with the device getting overheated or possibly sweat either getting in the device or shorting out the headphones?

If this is the 7th gen iPod nano, and it is new, make sure the headphones plug is completely inserted into the headphones jack of the iPod.  The fit can be tighter than expected, especially when new.  It should "click" into place, when fully seated.
Your iPod can use headphones with remote control buttons on the cord.  If the plug is partially inserted, you may get audio, but the iPod may get false control signals (such as for volume down) over the connection.
If that's not the problem, try using a different set of headphones to see if this problem still occurs.

The iPod Nano battery will not charge unless you connect it to your computer, to an AC outlet with a wall adapter, a charging dock or an auto adapter/dock.
You battery is always discharging when idle or shut off.  You should read the manual for your model iPod Nano regarding batteries - iPod Manuals

  • IPod Nano 6th generation is missing songs

    Hi,
I synced my iPod Nano 6th gen to iTunes, and for some reason it either completely misses almost all of my songs, or it thinks that it's playing them because it is totally quiet for the length of the song. I don't know why as all of my songs work on my iPod Touch 4th generation,iTunes and my Windows 8.1 Phone.
On the iPod, it only plays about 8 songs in my 96 song playlist, and when it reaches a string of songs it can't play, it just looks like I keep pressing the "next" button. The album artwork for all of the songs comes up, but almost none play that actual song itself. Also, if I go specifically into "Artists" and choose a song, it does the same thing where it just skips through songs until it can find one it can play. The screen between songs switches so fast that I never have time to read the title of the song fully.
Does anyone know the solution to this?
    Thanks

I have been driven nuts by this problem, and I finally cracked it today after reading through the forgoing and tearing my hair out.  Look at page 29 of the user manual, at the screen shots at the top.  Ignore the left one, just get your nano to show the middle screen.  No shuffle icons, none of the stuff you want, huh? Wrong! The one on the right of the page, the one you want, is there, out to the right!
So if you scroll the visible screen left, you get the third screen, the one that is on the right side of the page.  That's the one that has that shuffle control.  Mission accomplished, almost!  Just tap the shuffle icon.
This is a fault on the part of the manual writers, who clearly had to know the nano backwards, but who, as a result, didn't spoon-feed us enough. All it took was "Oh, by the way, if you want the second screen. you need to scroll across to it!"
Maybe they say it somewhere, but we all know that users don't read the manual, and when they do, they don't do it in a logical and sequential way.  Ah well, five weeks after a doofus shop assistant in Singapore messed it up, I have things going again.  Thanks to those who did the hard work and left the clues!  Me, I just flailed about irrationally until I got lucky

  • IPod Nano 6th Generation Volume Button Issue

The "-" volume button on my iPod Nano 6th generation is stuck in the "on" or depressed position against the case. It looks like the button either is binding against the case, or a spring-like mechanism beneath the button is broken.
Any ideas on how to fix the issue short of taking it in for a service appointment?  Maybe by opening the case?

If you open it or have a 3rd party repair site work on it you will no longer be eligible for an out-of-warranty replacement from Apple at a price of $65/$75 (make a Genius Bar appointment before going.
You can buy the switch and replace it but be sure you are up to it. Check http://www.ifixit.com for teardown instructions.

  • IPod Nano (6th gen) volume button issue..again

So, just about exactly a year ago, my iPod nano, 6th generation, its volume down button stoped working. the volume up was fine, but the volume down no longer functioned; it no longer turned down the volume and didn't even give that little click you feel when hitting the button when adjusting the volume.  I contacted apple, and luckily it was still under the service warrenty, so I was able to send it in and get a new iPod of the exact same model back, since the report said it was unfixable or whatnot, so that's why they had to give back a new device.
Now, I have had no other problems with it until now, when, again, nearly an exact year later, the same issue happened again.  The volum down button doesn't work, and doesn't even make the little click when pushed.
i checked the status of this iPod, with its new serial number, and now all the warrenty services have expired.  So i guess my question is: has anyone else experienced this trouble? and would this iPod still technically be covered because it was not yet been a full year since I sent it to tech support?
Any info on the issue would be appreciated!

  • IPod Nano 2gen recognition issue!

Ok, my girlfriend got a 2nd gen ipod nano and is computer illiterate. SO, she thought hey, i'll just give it to my friend to load songs on. So the first time that it was connected to a computer was on her friends computer. then i went over and installed itunes while she was at school, and typed out a guide to the basics, all that jazz.
i get a call that night and she said its not working. crap. i walked her through some stuff, and it turns out, its not being recognized in iTunes or My Computer. The apple help sites say to reinstall the software on the cd that came with the ipod....except they dont have cd's with those ipods.
what do i do? Did using it with the other computer jack everything up? What do i need to do?

No. Look at the link and read the symptoms. First symptom states: "iPod does not show up in iTunes or as disk in Windows Explorer." This is why I pointed out that you needed to look through all of the links to see if they are helpful. Just looking at the title is not enough since the titles tend to be general.
Link for article I am referring to
You may also want to double check and make sure your girlfriends computer has the correct service pack for her OS if you have not already.

  • IPod nano 8gb: High volume until i go under 50%

Hello, i had one mp3 that was starting with a fade in until the vol was really high and the problem is that it did no matter if i decreased or increased vol. It was the same until i went under 50% where it started to drop down. The only thing i did is to encode this mp3 again with the same settings and same bitrate and strangly the problem is gone. Same MP3, same bitrate, same size, same time. The only difference are that one is original and one is re-encoded. But the original has the vol problem, re-encoded works fine. What could be the problem?

I have got this problem with my new 8gb nano too. Its very sad I had my mini stolen from my person whilst in a hospital bed dozing and it worked from the same itunes list and I could add albums or artists or songs now on the new replacment nano I can only add songs. Very annoying, please let me know if anyone can solve this. I too have reset and restored it numerous times. I am in the uk I think you are in the states.

  • My ipod nano 6th gen: volume goes down automatically.

I suspect it is due to some sort of short or something. How can I see if it can be fixed or not? I believe I saw a post similar before - I run a lot with this ipod and I am sure it get sweaty but I always use an arm band...it is not like I dunk it in water or wear it in the rain. I have tried restting it but it is not working.

while on "what's playing now" screen, swipe left (to the right) to see what's playing plus several icons.
it seems like you have the repeat icon "on" or blue.
just unclick this and songs should play in order.
i'm pretty sure this will do it.  hope it helps.

  • Can I Use my Ipod Mini and Nano 2gen on same computer?

I have an Ipod mini and have just purchased an Ipod Nano 2gen. Can I just install the Nano without changing anything that is on my computer for my Mini?
    Thanks for any help.

You may need to update iTunes to work with the second generation nano; updating iTunes will not erase anything from your library, and it will continue to work with the iPod mini.

  • Ipod nano and soundcheck?

does anyone know if it is possible to use the soundcheck option in itunes to playback songs at the same volume on an ipod nano? am i missing something?

There is a manual setting for EQ in both the iTunes preferences and the iPod. You have to navigate through all of the silly genre names, i.e. Rock, Hip Hop, Jazz, etc. But you will also find one that says "Custom." However, be forewarned, the EQ circuit employed is fairly crude, so don't expect high-end pro-audio filtering.
Lastly, if you make EQ and volume prefernce changes within iTunes, they should follow to the iPod when you upload. It's much easier to make these changes on the CPU rather than the iPod itself.
    Hope this helps.
    JM
EDIT: My bad. I think previous versions of iTunes labled it as "Custom," however, now the only way I know is to choose "Flat" and manipulate the entire library or playlist in iTunes. Don't know if this follows when you upload. Will have to experiment.

  • My iPod Nano (2nd Generation)...is....i don't know...

Allright, *this is really strange* i cannot sync my iPod Nano anymore, well kind of. i have to grab the end of the USB cable and tilt it upwards, then my computer will recognize it, and it'll start syncing. and then i noticed i've been getting new messages from windows/iTunes, the newqest being "The iPod iPod Nano cannot be synced, to fix this problem, click on the restore button on the iPod summary panel to restore the iPod to it's original settings" and so i did,(my thumb really hurt from holding that cable up) im guessing this is bad contact with the iPod's USB port??? or...? oh yeah, and it said "Cannot sync iPod, iPod Nano, required files are missing". and that's AFTER i restored it, that's right, after. This is beyond rediculous, i've got not only one problem , but a few problems with my iPod. What's going on?

Im actually tilting it up where it cinnects to my iPod, not where it connects to my computer, and i have tried three(yes, 3) different cables, one of which i bought brand new. still nothing, and i've also tried different USB ports on my computer,....nothing. Could this simply be a hardware failure of somekind? maybe a physical problem...i mean, why would i have to tilt the cable in order for my computer to actually read my iPod? im looking at the USB connector on my iPod (maybe it's my imagination, not sure) it possible might be bent, the little metal part in the port.

  • How do I reset my Ipod nano 4th gen to factory settings? (I found it after 3 years, and the email it was under is deleted and gone. I am trying to give it to a friend who can't afford one.)

I found my ipod nano after it being missing for nearly 4 years, (ITS 4TH GEN), and i want to give it to a friend who can't afford one. Here's the problem, I deleted the email that I used for it about 2 and a half years ago, what do i do?

I don't know how an email affects using your iPod nano...    But what you want to do is called a Restore.  You do this with iTunes, so you need to have iTunes installed on your computer.  If it's not installed, you can get iTunes here
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/
Connect the iPod and select it in iTunes.  The screen that appears is the iPod's Summary screen.  The button for doing a Restore is there.  This will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings, which is what is often called "factory" condition.
NOTE:  The iPod's lithium battery may not hold a charge after it has been sitting in the drained condition for a few years.  You should charge it completely, and confirm that it operates properly when disconnected, before giving it to your friend.
