IPod Nano 3rd gen 8GB does not show music library, can't restore in osx.3.9

I have two problems: Although, I can see mu iPod's music library when I plug in it into my ancient laptop (iBook G4 10.3.9), the library doesn't display on the iPod once it's disconnected, meaning I can't play any songs on the iPod proper). I've done everything that the Apple website recommends for troubleshooting my Nani 3rd generation, including attempting to reset it repeatedly. I've now saved the songs elsewhere, and I'm prepared to restore it, but I can't seem to find a way to reset it in iTunes 4 (apparently the latest version of iTunes that will work on this computer). Am I missing something? What should I do? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey there,
If your iPod is a 3rd generation nano, it will not work with anything below 10.4 as outlined in this Apple support document. That could be the underlying problem. Hope this helped.

IPod Nano (3rd gen.) will sync but music is not uploaded

I previosuly wanted to format my iPod with Disk Utility (since it would not mount on iTunes) and a very knowledgable person on this site assisted me - now when I connect the iPod to iTunes, it appears as a device!! But...
I want to sync only a few items from my library onto this iPod - when I attempt to do this (by either adding the specific music to the "music" section on the iPod or creating a playlist and using Autofill to fill the iPod), the iPod says that it has Synced but when I disconnect the iPod, there is no music on it. Why? ...and how do I fix it? When I click on the iPod in ITunes, it states that there is 0.76GB of Audio files (in blue), 0.05GB of other files (in yellow) and 6.3GB of Free Space (in grey) but when disconnected, no music???

I have the same problem. Not sure it is a Yosemite issue. I can connect to one machine but not the other. Very strange. I have even tried reinstalling the Nano software. If I sent the device to Disk mode then I can mount it on the machine that it will not work with, but iTunes does not see it. If I disable the disk mode then it seams iTunes un-mounts the device after a few seconds. Annoying.

I have the latest versions of iTunes on both a Windows XP service pack 3 computer and Windows 7 Laptop. I've tried multiple cords but both computers tell me "device not recognized", I've uninstalled and reinstalled all drivers. Done a reset and Disk Mode reset on my iPod. Haven't droped it or damaged it in anyway since i've connected it sucessfully to my computer last time. Will charge on a wall charger, car charger and dock. Tried connecting friends iTouch and it was registered by Both computers.
And ideas on a fix other than the $100+ apple wants, I'll just got buy a new MP3.

- Try another cable
- Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.

its got to be the software download from itunes because it has worked on all previous versions.

I have the same problem. My Iphone 4s works fine when docked to PC. PC won't recognize my 3rd Gen Nano. Same goes for my Work PC. They don't recognize it nor will plugging it in to a PC charge it. I have to plug it into wall socket to charge.
I have tried resetting, I have tried downloading newest Itunes.
Must be the Nano itself if it doesn't get recognized by mutliple PCs?
I haven't used the Nano for probably 2 months. Previously it worked fine...
One thing, when docked to my laptop during a reboot/startup, it intially starts to charge the Nano, but once setup is finished it doesn't recognize it any longer...

My daughter mistakenly downloaded the latest iTunes version which does not work with my older iPod Nano 3rd gen. Before all this happened I was running version 9.1.1 which was working beautifully. After uninstalling the updated version and reinstalling the 9.1.1 version, I cannot restore nor sync my music to the iPod Nano. I would just be happy having things the way they were previously. Go to the Apple icon in the upper left corner and select 'About this Mac' - it will show you which version of OSX you are using.

My ipod (3rd gen.) does not mount on iTunes (using a Mac). When plugged in, it appears on my desktop as if it were a jump drive.
I was planning on re-formatting it with Disk Utility but I'm not sure if this is a good idea. I also realised that the Format is listed as Windows NT File System (NTFS) when I have the disk utility window open. If I need to format with Disk Utility, what format option should i choose? (i.e. Mac OS Exteneded (Journaled), Mac OS Extended etc.)

Ipod nano 3rd gen unit is locked, though never have done a manual lock on it. Screen is lit and lock button shows. Have latest itunes, but nothing syncs. Have done everything on supports pages including toggle hold button, etc. Screen stays locked. Help

Sounds like the hold switch is broken, meaning you'll need to have your iPod serviced/replaced either by Apple or a third party repair company.

IPOD NANO 3rd Gen problem Apple Mac set up PC BASED MAIN UNIT

I have been asked by a friend to help out because they asked to add music to their new IPOD. But the owner is a tech scared person. They gave the unit an IPOD NANO 3rd Gen to my friend who uses Apple MAC they set up the IPOD with their Itunes and added the songs.
Later they wanted new tracks but have now downloaded ITUNES to their own PC Windows Vista system. The tracks were added to a USB memory stick and transfered and added to the PC Vista ITUNES. But now the IPOD Nano will not register on the Windows Vista ITUNES system but will show up on the "My computer"
I have reset the nano by holding the on/off and menu etc to get the Apple logo, the unit beeps as does the laptop PC Based ITUNES etc but will still not register on the ITUNES or allow me to sync the music from the ITUNES to the IPOD.
Can anyone advise how I can reformat the IPOD or reset the IPOD and remove all music currently on it to start again but get it to register/set up and show on the ITUNES on the windows VISTA unit rather than the mac based system.

I currently have a ipod nano 3rd gen with a click wheel. I have uninstalled, reinstalled itunes and rebooted my computer already (I have windows XP). It shows up in "My Computer" as unknown but itunes will not reconize the ipod is connected, but does with my other ipod. I've tried changing the drive letter on this 3rd gen; but it wont appear to even change the drive letter. I believe I need to download the drivers (its what i had to do with my previous ipod) but I would like a clue where to download the drivers from, or someone to shed any light and a solution for this issue. My ulitmate goal is to get itunes to reconize it so that I can restore the ipod

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Rented movies and Ipod nano 3rd gen.

I believe the ipod nano 3rd gen allows for rented movies.
so I should be able to sync my rented movies to my ipod easily.
However, when I go to the movies section under sync, the rented movies tab does not show? Something I'm doing wrong? (I believe before I saw the rented movies tab before, it stopped showing though) or does apple just suck?

Yes, the 3rd gen Nano supports rented movies. There is no separete tab for rented movies. They show up in the regular Movies tab. You can't sync them, though, only transfer them from one device to another as you can only have them on one device at a time per terms of rental.
With your Nano connected, click on the movies tab. You should see two boxes at the top. In the left hand box should be all of the rental movies you have on your computer. There should be a button between the two boxes that says, I believe, "Transfer" (don't have any rental movies so I can't say absolutely). Select the movie you want to move to your Nano and press transfer.
