IPod Nano 4th gen - Use iTunes to Restore

My cousin went to India for a couple of months so he gave me his iPod Nano. It was working when i got it, and i listened to his songs. So I downloaded the latest version of iTunes so I could put my songs in it. When I connected it, iTunes told me to restore it so I did. In the process, it showed an error (1437). So I disconnected it and my nano had this white screen and it says "Use iTunes to Restore". Which I tried many times, and the same error happens.
Now it's not even showing my in My Computer (running Windows Vista). I tried resetting the Nano multiple times and it turns into a black screen for about 2 seconds, then it returns to the "Use iTunes to Restore" screen, I do not get the screen with the apple. If I cannot fix this, will I be able to take it to a Apple store? I have the one year warranty. The Problem is, my Cousin only gave me the iPod, no cables or headphones. I am using the charging wire from my iPod video (5th gen), could this be the problem? Will the Apple store fix it for me without the receipt and the original box?

My old iPod Nano says to use iTunes to restore and I've followed all suggested help steps, but I can't get it into disk mode nor can I get it to show in my computer or in iTunes.  I have the latest version of iTunes.  Windows has all the most recent updates too.  I can reset the iPod, but the message to Use iTunes to restore comes back and I am stuck.

Already tried another USB port, still nothing.
I don't have another PC to check, I only have one which is the one not working with my iPod.
It appears under my Computer, just not under iTunes. Plus, the iPod classic troubleshooting assistant doesn't work because I can't restore since it can't come up onto my iTunes! Even my iPod says "Use iTunes to Restore" once in a while, but I plug it in & I'm not able to restore it since it won't come up under iTunes.
    Please help

  • When I plug in my iPod nano 4th gen to iTunes, a lot of space is taken up by 'other'. What is this and how can I get rid of it to free up some space?

When I plug in my iPod nano 4th gen to iTunes and click on my iPod, I can see a graph showing how much space is available on my iPod and what it is being taken up by.  A lot of space is taken up by 'other'. What is this? I have a big iTunes library, with about 2000 songs, so I don't want all this space taken up by something I don't know what it is. How can I get rid of it?

OmniDiskSweeper is a good program to see what's taking up space: http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/

  • Ipod nano 7th generation "use itunes to restore"

Now 1) the ipod is formatted
    2) when i connect to pc it displays white screen with "do not disconnect"
    3) Itunes doesn't detect ipod
    4) when the ipod is not connected to pc it displays "use itunes to restore"
    this is the current situation
    What shall i do ?

No. You need iTunes on a computer to restore it.  If you don't have iTunes you can download it from here:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you don't have a computer, can you can try to borrow one with iTunes installed.

  • IPOD nano (4th gen) use on windows platform need to be formatted?

    Hi,
I am a NEW ipod nano user . Recently , I have upload some songs using MAC and sync it. When I want to upload some more new songs onto my ipod nano using my other PC which is window XP pro version. It prompt me to "re-format the ipod nano" . Is this normal?
I am afraid if I reformat the ipod nano, all my songs will be gone ( previously using MAC to upload ). Can any expert on apple stuffs give some wise advise?

My ipod is having the same problem...that's actually why I came to the help page. My ipod is 2 yrs old and I've been taking good care of it, and this is the second time i've had this problem. the first time, after I left it for a while plugged in, it just started working - but now, nothing works!!! I've tried everything on the help page, and this is the only discussion I could find on the topic. I do not have voice command for my ipod, so I don't know if it works...it will reset, but the apple logo just sits there. Help!?!?!?!!!!! I really don't want to toss it!

  • Assorted Problems with iPod Nano 4th gen and iTunes

So i am currently experiencing several problems. Let me break it down so that it might help you understand what's going on.
#1 When dragging music files to my ipod in itunes, an error message popped up stating some sort of file reading/writing error, i forgot exactly what it said.
#2 iPod starts randomly reseting itself when it changes to a new song. sometimes reseting itself right after the main menu comes back up. It also does this while connected to my JVC KD-AVX44 stereo in my car via USB and while listening normally by headphones.
#3 I tried restoring it in itunes, after the restore software was downloaded, an error message appeared stating that the ipod could not be restored.
#4 itunes begins to not recognize iPod
#5 itunes freezed when brought up, still not recognizing the ipod.
#6 itunes crashes? It came up with a window asking for an itunes library to continue, selected just "my music" instead, no files labeled .itl in that. clicked cancel, itunes dosn't come back up.
I'm hoping there's something simple that i'm missing here, can anyone help?

I think i'll try reinstalling itunes tonight, i tried using some of the tips in these articles to reinstall my usb drivers etc, as i still can't get my ipod to restore. apple store will be the next step.

Also, (common question) what's the easiest way to get music into your itunes library automatically if downloading from another source. i just dragged all my previous music from "my music" when i got the nano, i'd just been using WMP before. and i can't seem to find a way to automatically have itunes pick up this stuff. kind of a pain in the behind to drag it all.

  • IPod nano (4th gen) not recognized by iTunes 11.1.3

I have an iPod nano (4th gen). After upgarding iTunes to v 11.1.3 (MacBook Pro) I get the follwoing message:
iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod.
Unfortunately, I restored to factory settings, which erased everything, but each time I connect the iPod I get the same message.
It must be an issue with compatibility because I get the same message with my wife's iPod (same gen), but hers syncs just fine on her iTunes (v 10), and I get the same message using two different USB cables.
So now my iPod is essentially empty (factory settings) and as good as a paperweight unless there is a way to get iTunes to recognize and sync. If I could get past the error message, I suspect it would be easy to sync automatically or manually.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi JMfromMN,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  If your iPod isn't recognized by your computer, this article may help:
iPod not recognized in My Computer and in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369
Since your wife's iPod displays the same behavior omn your computer, it sounds like the troubleshooting for the iPod itself (which you've largely already done anyway) can be skipped.

  • Ipod Nano 4th Gen not recognised in Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Itunes and screen blank

    Hello,
I have a quite old (3-4 years old) iPod Nano 4th Gen.
The screen is blank, which means it needs charging. When I plug it into my laptop/computer then it doesn't show up which im assuming is because it needs charging.
When I plug it into my plug charger (plugged into a wall) nothing happens.
I think this is because the cables (I have 3- 2 computer USB cables and one plug charger cable) being too lose and not connecting to the iPhone fully.
I have looked at all the articles, I have done the R's, I have tried to restore it, I have pressed the clickwheel and centre button together and I have toggled the hold switch.
If anyone can help it would be appreciated! (And please save the "take it to apple support" etc... comments for if you can't think of anything else- not being rude but I know this)
    Thanks

Hey, I hear ya and can sympathize. I have the same
issue. The difference is that my computer can "see"
    my ipod but it refuses to show up in itunes itself;
therefore, I can't put anything on the ipod (from the
computer) and vice-versa. Apple support is clueless.
This is very frustrating to say the least. Itunes
keeps telling me that my ipod is synced to a
"different" computer, which isn't true. It's the
same computer. The difference is that when I first
got the 'pod and used it with this computer (and
everything worked fine), I was running XP. I
installed Vista and after that, all the problems
started. If I ever get this resolved, believe me,
    I'll post something here.
I'm guessing that somehow, itunes "sees" what
computer it's hooked to by "looking" at something in
the OS. Change the OS and it "thinks" it's seeing a
    "different" computer.
    Try reformatting it.

  • HT3310 i have a problem with the headset of my ipod nano 4th gen. the right side don't have a sound. It comes in and out.  what do I need to do?.. I am using the original headset eversince. I took it to an Apple Mac Center I was told they can't do anythin

I have a problem with the headset of my ipod nano 4th gen. the right side don't have a sound. It comes in and out.  what do I need to do.. I am using the original headset eversince. I tool it to a Apple Mac Cennter and Taked with a Service Center Rep. And he told me that they can't do anything because they don't repair the ipod they didn;t even look at it. I was told instead to buy a new one. I was very disappointed.. This is already my 5th ipod though i am planning to buy a new one.. I still want it fixed so I can give it to my little sister

From the OP: "My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. "
They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod.

  • Itunes won't recognize my ipod nano 4th gen (or any other ipod) as a device

i've had my ipod nano 4th gen for as long as 4th gen's have been around.  never had a problem with it or itunes.  until now.  all of a sudden, when i plug my ipod in to sync the new music purchased, itunes doesn't even recognize my ipod.  "devices" never even comes up.  "sync ipod" under file isn't highlighted.  my ipod only shows as charging.  since this problem occurred, i've tried my husband's ipod and it isn't recognized.  i've used numerous cords in both USB ports.  i've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes.  nothing is working!  any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

  • Using a Windows formatted iPod Nano (4th Gen) with Bootcamp on a Mac(Win XP

Hey I was wondering if anyone knows if you can use a previously formatted iPod Nano (4th Gen) with a Mac that has XP Bootcamped on to it. If the Nano is placed in manually manage music with the original computer it was formatted with, will it be able to accept music, movies, podcasts, etc from the windows on the Mac or will they still be incompatible?

Well, I have 4 internal drive bays filled already, is there room somewhere for 5th one in the box? I wasn't aware of it if there is?? My mac is MacPro3,1, early 2008.
That macsales.com link is interesting but I'm not in the US (I'm in Croatia), and all those brands are supidly expensive here, that $80 esata docking station is almost $200 here... bahh. For that price I may as well buy a whole new 3TB external disk, I want to dock the old one to save money.
I've browsed around and I've found Icy Box docks, which have much more reasonable prices:
    BOX IB-110StUS2-B
    ICY BOX IB-111StUS2-Wh
    ICY BOX IB-115StUS2HC
They all claim to have OSX support... anyone have any experience with them?

  • I have an iPod Nano - 4th gen.  How do I get music from my iPod (which I didn't purchase on iTunes) to transfer into my iTunes?

I have an iPod Nano - 4th gen.  How do I get music (which I didn't purchase on iTunes) from my iPod into my iTunes?

If the iPod is the only place that you have the music (e.g. you don't have it on a backup drive) then there are some programs listed half-way down this page which should be able to copy it back from it : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
You can then add it to your computer's iTunes library via File > Add To Library
