IPod nano being read by Windows as "Removable Disk"

I have a 4gb nano, current firmware 1.1.1. Now, I've updated it before to the music on iTunes (back when it was on 1.0), but then one day, the iPod suddenly showed the exclamation/folder icon. So I restored the iPod with firmware 1.1 (it recommended I update, so I did), but my computer couldn't recognize the iPod. It kept showing a little baloon (I'm using XP) saying that the device could not be written to (only when I unplugged it, however). So, I thought that maybe it was just trying to write to it very slowly, but after leaving it there for a day, supposedly "writing" to the iPod, there were no results. I updated to 1.1.1, thinking that maybe 1.1 had a bug that caused this, but then I was confronted with the problem of nothing recognizing it at all. Windows now shows the iPod as a "Removable Disk", and when I double click it, it shows the loading mouse for about a minute; until it says
"E:\ is not accessible.
The Files or directory is corrupted and unreadable."
NOTE: I have NEVER used any third party software like linux or "hacked" my iPod.
So, after looking around, I followed the method here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Because I could see the device in My Computer but couldn't open it, and iTunes didn't recognize it.
However, it was not a success, so I tried the method here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301343
But that also didn't work. I am now at a loss for explanation, can anyone help me? This is my mother's iPod, and she's leaving on a business trip in two days; I'd like to get her music back on it so she can use the iPod on the plane. Any ideas?

It wasn't being recognized by anything... including the updater. But after searching through other threads, I found that other people have had this problem as well; it seems the firmware is the prime target for the scre-up. Thanks, Benoa, for the steps! Although you've probably heard it enough times already.

Doublechecking. Have you also tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

  • 6th generation ipod nano not shown in windows 8 or itunes

ipod nano briefly appears in windows then disappears and is not shown in itunes at all. I get error message saying "an ipod has been detected, but could not be identified properly" Have re-installed itunes, reset the ipod  and restarted the laptop many times. Any advice please?

I've spoken with Apple and here is their response (worked for me). You need to uninstall not only iTunes, but also (in this order):
    1) iTunes
    2) Apple Software Update
    3) Apple Mobile Device Support
    4) Bonjour
    5) Apple Application Support
Then you restart your computer. Then you install the latest version of iTunes (which will reinstall all those things you uninstalled). Then you restart your computer again.

I sent my 1st generation nano back on Monday and got my replacement today (Thursday).  Apple is FAST! Kudos for great customer service.  However, I also got the 6th gen. silver 8gb nano like deggie said although I didn't know that it was refurbished and I am very disappointed.  This is the super-tiny nano that I'm guessing no one liked because they redesigned it after 1 generation.  If they were sending refurbished nanos, I would have much preferred any generation but the 3rd or 6th generation or at least the option of choosing from what was available.  All of the others look very similar to the 1st generation which I really liked.  That said, the 6th gen. does have more memory than my original and has some additional features but I think I would have rather kept my old one.  I said I think because I haven't used the "new" one and I might get used to it.  Something to consider if you are happy with your 1st generation nano.

  • My ipod nano was synced by itunes and removed all of my music and game files. I am in the process of adding my music back one cd at a time, but there is no history of tetris that I paid for from the itunes store. How can I get this game back for my ipod?

My ipod nano was synced by itunes and removed all of my music and game files, and replaced my music with my kids music that they have put into the current itunes library. My music is nowhere to be found on my computer, so now  I am in the long, forever process of adding my music back one cd at a time, but there is no history of tetris that I paid for from the itunes store. How can I get this game back for my ipod?

Contact iTunes support and explain your situation to them.  They may let you redownload it at no cost.

If they don't, I'm afraid you'll have to purchase it again.  Sorry.

I'm trying to up my new Ipod Nano, it appears in Windows and not in Itunes, if I reinstall Itunes, will files previously set up by other Ipod users sharing the computer be lost?

You said " I sign in but her music list shows up mixed with about 1/3 of mine."
    Sign in where?
    What music list?
It also sounds like that computer is not authorized for the account. You can only have 5 computers authorized for one account. If yo go to iTunes>Store>View account and then sign in it will tell you how many (but no what computers) are authorized. There is no way to find out what computers are authorized.
You can deauthorize all computer once a year.
    See:

My ipod nano 3rd generation appears to be in disk mode and it will not reset. can anyone help

Try to reset it more than once if necessary.  By a reset, I assume you mean, toggling the hold switch on and then off, then pressing and holding both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear right?
If nothing else, you'll need to let the iPod's battery fully drain.

  • Ipod Nano Being recognized as a removable disk on Laptop.

Hello, i am currently downloading music for a freind on their new Ipod Nano (7th Gen). They did not set up the ipod, as i took it home to put music on it right as they opened it and asked me to. I set it up on my Mac (unfortuantly) and then proceded to connect it to my library on my Laptop (PC) but when i did, it read the Ipod as a removable disc, and not an ipod. Itunes does not recognize it in any way either. It only shows up as a removable disc under My Computer.I then found out that i need to uninstall the mac version of the software from my ipod and reinstall the PC version of the software on it so it is compatable for my laptop, but whenever i try to format, or restore the ipod, it just goes into disk mode and still wont show up on my computer as anything but a removable disc.I tried putting music on it from windows media player but then it said i needed to reformat it, so i went ahead and formated the ipod. After doing so, i was able to put music on it from my documents, but i wasnt able to operate the ipod in any way as it had reverted into Disk Mode as a result of the formatting. Unfortuantly, my ipod was still not showing up in itunes so i could install the software to make the ipod compattable with my laptop. Please help!!! This has been haunting me for the past month and a half, any help will be appreciated! Thank you.

Are you using iTunes 7? There are issues with iPod sync on some Windows boxes. You might wish to regress to iTunes 6.0.5.

  • ITunes doesn't recognize IPOD Nano (2nd Gen), but Windows XP does

I'm a longtime happy owner of an IPOD Mini and bought a second Gen IPOD Nano a few months ago that works great. I have two identical P4 Sony Vaios that I back up/clone from one to the other every so often to keep them as identical as possible. It's been some months though since I've backed up/cloned my primary laptop to the secondary, and the 2nd Gen Nano isn't being recognized by ITunes on my primary laptop, only my secondary laptop. However Windows recognizes the Nano just fine on the primary laptop on all 3 USB 2.0 ports (I haven't tried my Mini recently), and I can browse the file system of the Nano, but ITunes just doesn't see it.
As I mentioned, my secondary laptop works just fine with the Nano, both Windows XP AND ITunes recognizes it and can update it, but I don't want to have to use that computer JUST for updating my IPOD, and pretty soon I need to back up my primary laptop to my secondary. I've actually only been holding off on that because I can't get my Nano to be recgonized by ITunes with my primary laptop and don't want to screw them both up. Cloning my secondary laptop to become my primary isn't an option, the file system is many months outdated, I need to get the Nano working with ITunes on my primary laptop.
This is definitely a software/driver/service issue, I can take the hard drive out of my secondary laptop, put it in my primary, and ITunes will recognize the Nano just fine. I can take the hard drive out of my primary laptop, put it in my secondary, and ITunes can't see the Ipod. I've upgraded ITunes twice on the primary laptop in the last few months with no improvement, so that hasn't helped.
I really don't know what else to do at this point, I was under the impression that any drivers needed are installed by ITunes, and as long as Windows recognizes the device (which it does) everything should be fine and ITunes should recognize it. I've checked my services and there is only one IPOD related service that I've found (it's actually called "Ipod Service") and I've confirmed that service is running and starts automatically. I presume that service is needed and isn't a legacy from my IPOD Mini and an old version of ITunes.
If, after digesting the above information, anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. This has gotten to be somewhat annoying.
    Thanks
    P4   Windows XP Pro

Nevermind. I uninstalled ITunes completely as well as the IPOD updater program (I think that's what it was basically called) that was installed on my system. I then rebooted, tested the Nano to make sure Windows recognized it, then tested it (successfully) with Winamp and the Winamp IPOD plugin. It was already working properly with Winamp and the IPOD plugin even when ITunes wasn't recognizing it so there was no change there. Once everything checked out I reinstalled the current version of ITunes and it FINALLY recognized the IPOD. It said there was a new software version available for the Nano so I went ahead and allowed it to download and install the update to 1.1. The update went smoothly and once the Nano restarted ITunes again recognized it. No clue what the problem was that created this error condition initially, but perhaps someone else will benefit from this information. I would have thought that reinstalling ITunes at least 3 times, including 2 version upgrades, would have resolved the problem, but it took removing ITunes and the IPOD software completely to resolve it.

  • Ipod Nano Not connecting to Windows 8, Itunes

I am unable to get my Ipod Nano to connect to Itunes.  My computer is operating with the newest versions of Windows 8 and Itunes.  I have completed ALL the steps in the troubleshooting guide through Apple.  I would like to use my Nano during the delivery of my son next week.  I have looked for answers all over the internet, with no luck.  Can anyone help? I see that many people have had the same issue.  (My Ipad also did not work). Again, I have completed ALL of the troubleshooting items

    Hello again, Pheobesmum.

I purchased an iPod nano today and have not been able to install iTunes. There are instructions for Windows XP but not much help for Vista. I, too, just bought my first ipod and have Windows Vista. I purchased songs through iTunes and tried to drag them to my ipod icon, but it said that I was not authorized on this computer! I called tech support for HP and they said it's a compatibility issue and to contact Apple about it to fix it. Before I do so, I am checking here first, just hoping there would be a really easy fix for this problem. I'm regretting getting Windows Vista now for many reasons, this being the latest. Any advice?

    hello all
I have an ipod(nano 4Gbs with iTunes on XP laptop) and cannot get it updated. I have gone through the 5R's.
I ran all updaters and got message - "iPod manager internal error" and "cannot mount iPod"

with the internal manager error, see:

with the itunes error message, see:
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod

  • My Ipod nano is unrecognized by Windows & Itunes

My new Ipod nano is not recognized by Windows or Itunes. I've tried everything suggested here, but no luck whatsoever. I should point out that I also have a 20GB Ipod connected to the PC. It works fine. Could the other Ipod "interfere" somehow? What to do about it.

I did eventually find the answer to my problem in one of the postings on this forum (although I can't find it now). Essentially, what I had to do was go to My Computer, select Manage, then select Device Manager. I chose Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then selected USB Root Hub, clicked on Properties, selected the Power Management tab and unchecked Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. This did the trick.
