Ipod nano - cant restore - firmward file corrupt

my ipod nano (1st generation)was originally formatted for a mac, and I need to perform a restore because my main computer is now a pc.
However, when I try to restore the ipod I get an error message saying that the firmware file is corrupt..I have followed the instructions for fixing this problem(remove the apple updates folder in /spplications etc), but I cannot find that folder, even after showing hidden files. I found a program of a similar name in my program list called 'apple updates', which I tried to uninstall but again got an error message.
Please help! cannot update, add, change songs etc on my ipod

Okay...got mine working...here is what i did....uninstalled and reinstalled both Itunes and quicktime on my computer. Still wouldnt work, still locked up my computer. I found another computer that had an older version of itunes on it...connected my ipod to it, and it finally restored my ipod settings. Took it home to connect it to mine, and it worked. Hope this helps anyone else out...Especially since this seems to be a reoccurring problem that Apple isnt taking care of. good luck

Hi, got the same problem as kerry221. The proposal given by stevejobsfan0123 did not solve it.
Additionally iMac does not shut down after closing iTunes. Need to manually shut down the iMac.
Problem occurred after last software update.
Open for any further proposal :-)

  • Ipod Nano Not Restoring??

    Hi,
My ipod nano wont restore. Whenever I click restore to factory settings it says:
"There was a problem downloading the iPOD software for the iPod "iPod". The requested resource was not found.
I tried to reformat it and it says that Windows was unable to reformat the ipod.

    Hi Jake&jose,
A "requested resource" error message when restoring an iPod usually is referring to the iPod, not the firmware download (although some errors may refer to this).
So, first, try forcing your iPod into disk mode, by following the instructions here:
    Putting iPod into disk mode
With the iPod in disk mode, connect it to your computer, and see if you can sucessfully restore it in iTunes.
If that doesn't help, then try these five steps (nnot the last one, of course):
    The Five Rs
Also, sometimes this can be an issue with your USB drivers. Make sure that they are up-to-date, and in some cases, you may need to reinstall your USB drivers.
    For details, see this article:
iPod is not recognized properly by computer when USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date
Do you have success with any of those things?

  • New computer, same ipod nano. cant access songs

i just got a new laptop and all my songs are on my old computer. i have an ipod nano 2g. i know i have to transfer them using an external drive or disc. but is there a way to transfer them off my ipod? alos when i use itunes on my new notebook it says that the ipod is synced with another library and i cant get my songs on it! please help....

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

Here are my Problems,I've got my Ipod Nano 2GB 2 days ago, I have Windows XP
ITunes Has Detected An IPod That Appears to be corrupted. You May need to restore this IPod before it can be used in ITunes. You May Also Try and Disconnect + Reconnect The Ipod.
So I Tryed to Disconnect + Reconnect nothing happened, then I tryied to restore and this came up,
The Ipod "Ipod" could not be restored. An Unknown Error Occured(1418)
so i went threw the 5 r's nothing worked, then I tried to do everything over, reinstall Itunes, this happened, There was a problem Downloading the Ipod Software for the Ipod, the requested resource was not found
I am getting frustrated because i've tried everything that i know i can do, what else is left, this is my 3rd Ipod that ive tried in the last week, non of them work, i just want music on my Ipod!!!

  • IPod Nano 5G Restore Loop Issue

I've seen the infinite issues with different iPods (classics and nanos) stuck in the restore loops and how possible fixes might happen. Everything checks out fine from diags mode. Disk mode can sync just fine to files, etc. What else can be done to fix the issue?
    The Hardware (and SW):
    MBP 3,1 OSX 10.6.6
    WinXPPro SP3
    iPod Nano 5G 16gb
    iTunes 10.1.2
    The issue:
    the infinite loop of restore
    What has been tried:
    Restore basic mode from iTunes
Restore in disk mode from iTunes
Restore in DFU mode from iTunes
Drive letter changing on a Windows XP Pro SP3 box using iTunes

    Hello mvfx,
What other USB devices do you have attached to your computer? If there are any at all, try temporarily disconnecting them to see if that makes a difference as they sometimes cause driver and drive letter conflicts.
Another option might be to simply reformat the iPod using the tools provided by Windows. For instructions on how to reformat your iPod, see this article.

  • IPod Nano in restore loop

When connecting the iPod nano my laptop, iTunes states the nano is in need of a restore. Ok, I thought, I'll restore it then reload my music, I've succesfully did this before. I proceed with the restore but when it shows back up in iTunes listing, it again asks for a restore. From this point forward, it is in a restore loop. I take this nano to a friends Mac G5 and no problem, loads, re-syncs, works great. Bring it back to my laptop and same problem. Tried another Windows XP PC in my house and it too, works great, loads songs, re-syncs, works fine. I think I have an iTunes database error within this particular Laptop. Removed iTunes and ran a registry cleaner twice but that did not help. Any suggestions???

Reformat the iPod drive through the computer management within administrative tools in the Control Panel. When doing it select FAT for the format, not FAT32. Its the only way I fixed mine after every other attempt (i.e. drive letter change, reinstalled iTunes, format the drive by right clicking on drive, etc.)

  • "Other" disk space is almost full; Can't restore "firmward file"

I am not quite sure what has happened with my mini. First of all, I did just get a new computer. I think this was the first time I hooked up my mini...maybe I missed a step here. I downloaded iTunes 7.0. Now there is some new summary page and it is telling my that my ipod has 3.60 GB of "other" information. I tried to erase and start over using the 5R strategy. I cannot restore because I get an error message stating that "iPod cannot be restored because firmware file cannot be found."
Needless to say, I am having serious issues. If anyone has some ideas, please let me know. I think I may have read the available information on the apple site, so any other info would rock.

I tried that and now there is an error message that says: The ipod cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application.
There is also a pop up window titled "Autoplay" that seems like it very quickly scans through my library.
It did help and took my iPod through most of the process, but it did not complete the restoration.

  • Ipod Frozen, cant restore.. HELP!

  • IPod Nano 4GB Restore Software Unavailable

My little sister pulled the cord on my Nano while the screen said "do not disconnect". iTunes is reading the iPod fine. When I go to restore it, I get the following error message:
"There was a problem downloading the iPod software for the iPod "iPod". The requested resource was not found."
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've had this for less than 72 hours (it was a Christmas present) and I don't want to get yelled at for screwing it up already.

You need to be connected to the Internet so that iTunes can download the latest version of the iPod software.
Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes as well.

  • 2nd Gen iPod Nano - Impossible Restore

I recently bought a used 4gb 2g nano and had it working fine. Forgettiing that it needed itunes 7 to work, I formatted it in hope it would would with itunes 6.
Remembering this, I had to install itunes 7, bringing me to my problem...
When I try to restore the iPod, it loads saying "Connecting to the..." and asks if I want to restore. I click yes and it says again "Connecting to the...", but after maybe 10 seconds or so it says "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPod "iPod". The network timed out."
It does this every time I try. I've even tried reinstalling itunes 7.
So I am now stuck with a useless nano.
    Ideas?

You might be getting a conflict from another USB device and/or network device. Try connecting just your iPod, (and keyboard and mouse), and disconnect from any network you might be on and try again to Restore it. You might also want to download and reinstall iTunes.

  • 7th gen ipod nano wont restore i get error message (-23) problem downloading software for iPod!

I bought a refurb iPod and i guess its formated for a mac so it told me to restore it but i get the error message and for some reason when i pluged it in it asked me if i wanted to reformat "removable disc drive G" which i'm sure is the iPod it self. PLEASE Help other wise i'm going to return it. THANKS!

So you are getting Error 23 or not?
That error indicates you have security software that is interfering with the download of the software. Temporarily disable ALL of your antivirus/antispyware software and try again. And you do have to reformat it for a PC but this should happen when you restore it in iTunes.
