Ipod nano completely formatted, missing .ipod_control folder

My son was trying to help his sister clear out her 3rd generation ipod nano.
He completely formatted the contents of the ipod.
I can't restore or install firmware or OS as iTunes simply doesn't recognize it.
The .ipod_control folder is gone, the only contents of it is a file called pmp_usb.ini
Anyone know how to reload the OS on it if iTunes doesn't recognize it?

Fixed it!
Formatted on Mac (previous format was on PC) to HFS format.  Used disk utilitiy.
Plugged it in, and iTunes popped up "Welcome to your new iPod"

  • My iPod nano completely eliminated all 214 songs from my music, leaving just the songs I recently purchased (9).  How can I get them back?  I've tried redownloading them but it didn't work.

My iPod nano completely eliminated all 214 songs from my music, leaving only the 9 songs I last purchased.  When I try to sync, I get a message, "cannot be synced because the iPod cannot be found."

When you say "account," do you mean your iTunes library, because your iTunes library is what is on your computer?  Your iTunes library does not have an email address.  An account that is related to iTunes is your Apple ID (which is an email address) and you use it as your user name to sign in to the iTunes Store, to make purchases.  Changing your Apple ID will not make songs disappear from your computer's iTunes library.
If you had an Apple ID and used it to make song purchases from the iTunes Store, and then started using a different Apple ID, you should be able to re-download the songs purchased with the old Apple ID.  In iTunes, sign in to the iTunes Store using your OLD Apple ID (and password).  That may not be your current email address, but Apple uses it as your user name, so it does not matter.
On the iTunes Store Home screen, click on Purchased under QUICK LINKS.  This takes you do the Purchased screen, where you can re-download previous song purchases (for that Apple ID) at no cost.
NOTE:  If those song purchases are from more than a few years ago, you may also need to authorize your computer to play (and sync) songs for your old Apple ID.
For songs that were not purchased from the iTunes Store, if they are also gone, you cannot get them back unless you have a backup (or they are still loaded on your old iPod).
If that's not what you mean by "changed the email address on my account," please post back with more details.

  • Ipod Nano date format

I have an Ipod nano and have started to download podcasts. These are dated, but for some reason my Nano will only use a rather odd date format, where the month comes first, and then the date. I have searched for the option to turn this off, and return to dd/mm/yyyy, but cannot find it. Can anyone help?

    Hi Richard,
    See this post:
    iPod 1.2: About the Clock
    ...in particular this part:
"Depending on the language iPod is set to use, the date and time format will change accordingly."
The default for English may be the American standard of month/day/year, rather than the European standard you were expecting.

My iPod Nano (4th generation) suddenly stopped working as I was listening to music, and I could not turn it on again. Is it possible that the battery went dead? Can the battery be replaced?

  • IPod Nano completely broken?

    Hi there,
I got my first iPod (iPod Nano 2nd Edition 2GB) a week ago because I've been using iTunes for a while now and I wanted to get something decent to play my music on the go.
I have also bought the Nike+ Sports Kit and a Nike+ wristband to use it while running.
Now, on the first day everything went well. I could connect my iPod to iTunes, connect it to the Nike+ Sports Kit sensor, it worked perfectly. After I finished my exercises I noticed that the back of the iPod Nano was slightly wet, although I had it savely inside the Nike+ wristband which is specifically designed to it with the iPod Nano that way.
On the Morning of the second day I noticed that the display of my Nano was stuck (frozen) so I looked up the support site and managed to reset it by pressing select-menu for 6 seconds ect.
Recently these freezings have come more often (I've had to reset my iPod around 10 times in the last 4 days). I've also had to restore it a few times.
Now, today when I tried to connect my iPod to iTunes nothing happened. The iPod Nano screen is dark and stays dark, even when I have it connected to the USB cable on the PC. I've tried to reset it about 10 times in a row but the display stays dark. When I connect it to my computer iTunes doesn't recognize it, but Windows XP tells me there is a new USB device connected to my computer so the iPod must be alive somehow. The problem is that I don't know the location of the iPod driver on my computer so I can't tell windows where to search for the iPod driver to install it.
Does anybody know the location of the iPod driver on Windows machines, or does anybody know what I should do next?
I really need your help. Thank you.

    Heya,
something similar happened to me. I didn't get my ipod wet but the last week i've had to reset every time i wanted to use it and like you, mine's not recognised on my laptop and nothing happens when i try to charge it. It's propper dead!
I'm taking mine to a shop that can repair/replace ipods within warranty. New ipod here i come. You may have to do this too.
    Good luck.

  • Ipod nano not formatting

Just got my nano today and when i go through the ipod setup, it tells me that my ipod needs to be formatted, goes through 45 minutes of "Waiting for ipod" and then tells me there was an error in communicating, try again. I'm ready to throw this thing through the window, I've done this about 6 times. Finally, I went through the setup without adding the ipod. Is the format necessary? It's still charging at this point, so I haven't looked at my iTunes yet to see if it's recognized. Any help would be appreciated.

strange, as Nono should be peformatted in FAT32. Can you try to uninstall the iTune and iPod updater, reinstall them again, do not open iTune yet until you plug your Nono to your PC. Open the iPod updater and do the Restore.

  • Ipod nano completely frozen!!

I have seen other messages with the same question. My screan is frozen and my backlight wont turn off.The battery wont even decrease. I have tried all the methods of restarting but nothing happens. I dont want to restore my ipod because there are songs on my ipod I dont have on my computer. Is there anything I can do????

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You need to reset the iPod by holding down Menu+Select for 6-10 seconds...
    Resetting iPod
It may take several attempts. The above link also has "tips" if your iPod does not seem to be resetting.
If you have tried many times and the iPod will not reset, you will need to wait for the battery to die. It should be dead well within 24 hours. (The battery indicator may be frozen too, so it will not show how much is left)

  • Help! Ipod nano with exclamation point folder icon.

My ipod nano (1st gen) showed a folder icon with exclamation point after an unsuccessful sycronization. Then the ipod didn't work anymore. I tried several times to use the reset method mentioned here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61003 without any success. Basically, after I force it into disk mode, my computer still did not recognize it and asked me to insert the disk (when click with right button).
Since I bought it more than one year ago, the warranty has expired. So return it to apple is probably not a viable option. I am wondering whether there is anything else I can to to fix the problem? Does anybody know what kind of problem it might be, hardware problem or just the software screwed.
    Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, iPod with exclmation mark folder icon means a corrupted OS with an iPod.
. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2364921&#2364921
or if you cant find a Mac
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

  • Connecting iPod Nano

Have checked the posts but cant seem to find an answer.Apologies if i have missed.Does anyone recognise this problem...PC Windows XP, no problems(surprisingly!),insert CD, insert USB, connect to iPod nano, iPod nano needs formatting, cannot complete formatting, iTunes and software wont load. rebooted etc but has made no difference. Please help as have had for 3 days and not been able to use!!

You could just install iTunes from the website, and plug up your iPOD, then maybe it wont matter, or iTunes will format it.

  • IPod nano 5th gen TOTALLY stopped responding

My iPod nano completely stopped responding. It was sitting on a table, then i went to get its usb cable, since the battery was low. I come back and it's off. I'm like, "no biggie, just auto off" But it doesn't respond when on the charger. Then i notice something's wrong. I press the center button, press other buttons, shake it, tip it sideways, plug in the earbuds, nothing. It's been on the charger ever since, and still doesn't respond. And no, i didn't drop it or anything, it was just sitting there when it happened. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Never mind, found a similar topic and got it up and running again. Weird thing is, itunes read the thing as corrupted when i hooked it up. But now you couldn't tell it happened.

  • How to put photos on my ipod nano

How can i put my photos on my new ipod nano? I have the folder on my ipod, but im not sure how to put them onto my ipod.
    Cheers
    Ipod Nano (1gb)   Windows XP

Have a look at the tutorial: Transferring Pictures to Your iPod
Once you've had a look at that here's a tip for managing the photos that go on to your iPod. Create a folder on your hard drive called called "iPod Photos" or something similar and drag the photos you want on your iPod to it.. Under the photo preferences for the iPod, point iTunes to "synchronize photos from" and choose to update from your new folder. If you keep a dedicated folder like this, you won't need to edit your normal pictures folder just for the iPod and you can add and remove picture from it whenever you need to.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
That happens when your iPod is set to automatically update all songs and playlists or selected playlists.
When iPods are set to manually manage songs and playlists, that lock goes away and you can drag the songs you want onto your iPod.
To do that, connect your iPod to the computer. When it appears in iTunes go to edit-->preferences. Click the iPod tab, and then the Music tab under that. Click the bubble next to manually manage songs and playlists and click OK.

  • Formatted my new iPod Nano 4Gb and my application can't find the Device ID

    Hi,
Just bought a new Nano 4Gb, updated it to 2006-06-28 (1.2) and of course it couldn't be recognized by Windows after that. Followed the instruction and formatted the Nano and made a Restore, worked fine!
Now to my problem, when using my application Anapod Explorer (from www.redchairsoftware.com) it can connect to the Nano but it says the iPod don't have any Device ID so it can't authenticate to the iPod...
Anyone more who is using this superb software?
It seems like if some information is missing in the iPod after the formatting of it...
    Please advice!
    Best Regards

    Additional Information:
Since some information seems to be missing on my iPod Nano 4Gb I compared the files with my iPod Video 60Gb.
    Comparing the directories: [driveletter]:\iPod_Control\Device
on my iPod Nano 4Gb and my iPod Video 60Gb
    iPod Nano 4Gb:
The file SysInfo is empty, containing no data when opened in Notepad.
    iPod Video 60Gb:
The file SysInfo is of 1KB and another file named "_unlocked" is present.
The information in the SysInfo file is:
    BoardHwName: iPod M25
    pszSerialNumber: JQ6040HFTXL

I have done the diagnstic test on the Nano and there are no errors and the iPod Nano is functional but I can only use iTunes to load it with music, I can't use the wonderful Anapod Explorer.
    Another thing:
When connecting my iPod Video to my computer it shows up with a drive looking like an MP3 player, when connecting my iPod Nano it shows up looking like an ordinary disc drive.

  • I need to get the music off my Ipod Nano 2nd GEN onto either ITunes or in a music foldes on my new computer. Not all the music was purchased from Apple Itunes HOW DO I DO THIS WITHOUT LOOSING ALL MY MUSIC??

I have not had a computer for several years and I just got a new one. My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. Thank goodness I had it all on my Ipod Nano 2nd GEN. Now my problem is that I don't know how to get the music off my Ipod Nano onto my new computer!!! I was able to get the songs that I purchased thru ITunes by just authorizing my new computer. But I have alot more music that is on my Ipod nano that I can't put into my ITunes library. In fact, I can't even get my music into a file folder on my computer!! I really need help. I don't have any copies of the music anywhere else and some of it is hard to get. How do I get my music either into ITunes or into a file folder on my new computer or even if I could get my computer to recognize my Ipod and sync all the music into windows media or something like that. Every time I connect my IPod all that happens is that it tells me if I sync the IPod that it will replace all the music from my ITunes library on to my IPod. And I am guessing that means all my music on the IPod will be erased. PLEASE HELP ME!!!! Thanks from the bottom of my songsters heart

From the OP: "My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. "
They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod.
