IPOD Nano dead

I got an iPod Nano 2nd generation for Christmas with a Nike Sport kit, which I love.
However it can not connect and can not be used any more, and I'm not sure why.
I've tried a reset, nothing.
When I connect it to the PC the PC beeps to say connecting, insert the disk that came with your USB DFU Drvice, which as you will know Apple stopped shipping CD's with Nano in September 2006, as it all comes with iTunes, which I have the latest version 7.0.2.16.
I am running Windows Vista.
What can I do?
Can I return it back to Apple, as I bought it from their site?
Can I call a suport line, cos I can't find one anywhere?
Help me please?

THere has been issues arising fromt he vista operating system adn the latest version of itunes adn how they dont work properly. PLease go to th elink below and read the subsequent documnentation that is held in that link adn see if this adjusts your problem. Also know that apple has recognized this issue and has made mention of a fix for itunes/vista issues in a future release of itunes software.

  • 2nd Generation iPod Nano Dead?

My 2nd generation iPod Nano was working fine this morning. Played music as it did for all these years. Later this afternoon I turned it on and the display would not light up. No music played. Seems like the battery is totally drained. Plugged into USB wall charger (from Apple) and get no indication whethr or not this thing is charging. Same when I plugged into my Mac. Does not show up in iTunes or on the desktop.
Is my iPod Nano Dead? Has the battery bitten the dust and cannot be recharged again? It's a shame that none of these iPods have user replaceable batteries... Other than being dead I am quite sure that if I could put in a new battery it would work again. I don't like spending a lot of money for something that does not last me at least 10 years.

If the iPod's battery has been fully drained it can at least 30 minutes or more of charging for the iPod to show any signs of life and even after that a hard reset might be required. To reset the Nano, press and hold both the Select?Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • Ipod Nano dead after 1 hour of first use

I am so sad - I got a nano this weekend for my birthday and after I charged it fully and began to try to use it, it completely DIED in less than an hour. I had successfully loaded about 60 songs onto it, and had only listened to 3 before this happened. All I see is the Apple logo, on a dark screen, in greyscale. Any attempt to manually reset or put into disc mode, or put into diagnostic mode is futile. My computer is no longer recognizing it, so I can't update or restore. This is my first experience with Apple and I was wondering if anyone else is having this exact same problem. I have requested service, and was also wondering how long it will take for me to get it (or a new one) back?

    Saira,
Sorry for all of your problemss. Apple products are great- and i have used them for a long time- but there will always be problems dealing with electronics. Couple of issuesi can think of:
    1. Some Windows USB ports can't fully charged, so make sure you plug it into the wall jack to charge.
    2. Make sure you have the latest Itunes for windows- they just released a new one the other day. 5.0.1
    3. Follow the instructions on the Nano help site
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/
It will give you helpful ways of trying to trouble shoot.
    4. Nothing else works: go to your nearst apple store and have them look at it. If there is not one near you, try to return it before the 14 day grace period is up. they will replace it for the same or another model. Be sure to keep your receipt.
    hope this helps,
    michael

  • IPod Nano 3G - dead as soon as taken off charger - new battery fitted

A couple of years ago my girlfriend won a 4gb iPod Nano 3G in a raffle. As we both had other iPods, it has been sitting in a drawer ever since. The other day I found it, and thought it would be useful for using in my car.
It was still sealed in the box - so I opened it, connected to iTunes, registered it, and synced it.
As soon as I unplugged it, the screen died. I couldn't get it to switch back on without plugging it in. When plugged in (computer or mains) it works fine. As soon as its unplugged it immediately switches off.
As it had been sitting unused for a couple of years, I presumed the battery was dead. I ordered a replacement from eBay - which arrived today. I soldered in the new battery, and left the iPod to charge for a while. The same again - when I disconnect it from the computer, it dies before I've even got the dock plug right out!!
Any ideas? I've tried restoring it with the latest firmware, and I've also tried manually resetting it using the Menu / Center buttons.

I have the same exact problem and situation, took it out of the shelf after two years unused! Any luck?

  • IPod Nano 5th Generation dead and gone forever? Tried every restart method possible

(skip to second paragraph if you want to get straight to the point)
Let me start out saying, my ipod is my everything. Yes I'm pathetic.
Anyway, this is my third iPod and my third nano. I bought it used because the news ones look annoying. But it was from a reliable seller and it worked/looked like new. I have had it for many months. Anyway, I have a bad habit of sleeping with it. I try to take it out before I doze off, but eh sometimes I forget. So this morning I wake up with it still in my ears and I take it out and accidently drop it (happens all the time to be honest). Wasn't a long or hard drop though. I go back to sleep, and wake up in an hour and plug it to my charger (like always). I go to add some more songs to it on my computer a few hours later and it won't even turn on.
The screen was blank and it wouldnt turn on at all. I plugged it into my computer, and iTunes didnt even recognize it. So having had an ipod nano for years, of course the first thing I did was restart it. And restart it. And restart it. With no results at all. It had been on the charger for hours, so it couldnt be dead. Anyway, I still let it charge with a blank screen. I googled loads on how to get it to start, and finally just tried messing with buttons. While it was plugged in to the computer, I pressed down menu and center (like you would to restart it) but for an abnormally long time. I am talking 2 minutes. And finally the computer recognized it. It asked to restore it and my heart sank because I have stuff on my ipod (200 songs) that were never backed up to my computer. And I dont know all 200 songs...ugh. Anywhooo...The screen said "Do not disconnect" but it looked older like the old nano's "do not disconnect" screen. And I let it restore, but it wouldnt? I forget why it said it couldnt (something mounted?) but it led me to a page that didnt help at all.
I unplugged it and it froze on that "do not disconnect" screen and so I tried several more times to restart it and do what I had just done previously (hoping it would restore), but it still just froze. I let it die out. Came back to it in 6 hours, and tried playing with it some more. I attempted to restart it about 8 more times and finally after holding down those buttons until my fingers calused, there was hope. The screen read "Connect to Charger" and it was the new modern looking screen message and image. I did as it told me, and connected to my iHome charger, but ugh it died out and it wouldnt restart. Came back to it in a hour and tried to restart it and finally I saw that lovely apple logo. And yep thats all I saw. It froze like that. And ten minutes later died out.
At this point I have a feeling there is no hope for it, but any tips would be lovely. Even a way to revover that lost music. Its not on my computer. I was dumb to put it straight on my ipod and not in my itunes library. Thank you for reading through this novel. Any help would be apprectiated.

I have the same iPod Nano and when it freezes, I press the menu and center button at the same time until the Apple logo apears. That should wake up your iPod Nano. Also, make sure the lock is off.

  • IPod Nano - unable to reset, no charge, DEAD

OK - my iPod Nano was working just fine and then the music stopped and the screen went blank.
I plugged it into the computer - no charge/no change and not recognized.
I plugged it into the wall outlet charger - no charge/no change.
I tried to reset it, but apparently I didn't because the screen is still black and it is not recognized by the computer/iTunes.
I'm thinking this guy is toast... please tell me I'm wrong!
    Thanks,
    Greg

Same with me gmkovich. Listened to it fine yesterday went to turn it on this morning and its dead! What is going on? We've spent a lot of money on the ipod and the songs. This isn't right. Of course I'm past the one year warranty.

My Ipod Nano 6g shows a sad/dead face when i try to turn it on, can i do something about that or is it just dead?

Sounds like it's flash storage is dying.  In that case, see this Apple support document.

i cant get started my ipod nano 5th generation,is dead ,how can i repaire it

As I said in my previous reply:
You either have to enter the ID and password of the previous owner or get them to remove the device from their account
Find My iPhone Activation Lock: Removing a device from a previous owner’s account
I would return the iPod for a refund. If you can't then turn it into the police since it is worthless to you

  • My iPod Nano is ,,dead" after formatting it

Hi. I've got a big problem
I bought an iPod Nano 2GB yesterday and i had problems with updating it, so I've formatted it (not restored- formatted using the right click in My Computer and ,,Format") And still the software didn't want to install... So I've restarted computer and unplugged iPod.
And now, it doesn's want to turn on (I think, that battery's full, beacuse I've charged it about an hour earlier). Maybe it's the fault of format? I've plugged an iPold and nothing happens... it's dead... ;(

    Hello,
    Have you seen this article?
    iPod won't turn on
Does your iPod respond if you try to reset it? (hold the "menu" and "select" (center) buttons together for 7 seonds until the Apple logo appears on screen).
After you try resetting it, does your iPod display anything when you connect it to your computer, or not?
Deos your iPod correctly go into disk mode if you try?
How to put your iPod into disk mode
Have you tried a restore on your iPod? Or do you get any error messages when trying to acess the iPod Updater? See this link for details about this...

  • Completely dead iPod Nano

My iPod Nano is dead. I was trying to get it to work with iPod Updater and iTunes (both weren't seeing it) So I reset it (at a full charge) After I reset it, the screen changed to black and white, then I reconnected it to my USB and Windows recognized it, but iTunes and iPod updater didn't, so I unconnected it. Then I turned it off, and now it won't turn back on. I've got it connected to my wall charger right now and it still won't respond (hold switch IS off). My 40GB iPod Photo works with the same USB slot and was recognized by Windows (XP), iTunes AND iPod updater, so i'm about 99% sure it's not my computer.

hmm. do what you did to get windows to recognize it, then wait at least a minute before you disconnect it. it may need some time to read the ipod in itunes. what does it say when you try to use the ipod updater?

  • IPod Nano completely out - battery dead?

My iPod Nano (4th generation) suddenly stopped working as I was listening to music, and I could not turn it on again. Is it possible that the battery went dead? Can the battery be replaced?

  • IPod Nano 7th Generation is almost dead

I bought my iPod Nano last year. It played well during my routine jogging. When I reached home 7 trying to change the playlist, it won't start.Connected to power/my iMac. Still dead.

It does not matter, as i stated this happened to me doing both. Currently I am using it now with the car, I got a newer car last week. But I think when I get out of the car it pauses anyways. I have noticed that if pauses I don't touch it, it stays on the same song for maybe 1 day.
If I don't use car for 3-4 days, it starts over again. That shouldn't matter though, if I did turn it off? I need help.......

  • Battery dead on ipod nano (2nd generation) What do I do?

Dead battert on my ipod nano (2nd generation) What do I do? Should I get it replaced or just buy a new one?

You have 1 of three routes if you want to get it replaced. Whether or not it is worth it is entirely up to you.
    1) Have Apple replace the battery in it for a flat fee.  See this page for pricinghttp://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/ and this page for setting up the service request. http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=ipod
    2) Locate and utiltize a third party service (there may even be some shops/service centers in your area).  I have no suggestions as to which one is better than another, so for now you'll have to Google for "iPod battery replacement" and you should get a number of results. This is slightly cheaper than the Apple route although a bit riskier in terms of having the job done right.
    3) If you consider yourself handy with small electronics you can purchase a new battery from an online retailer and use one of the numerous guides online to swap it out yourself.  I usually stick with http://www.ifixit.com for parts and step-by-step guides. Of course this route is the cheapest, but is the most difficult.
