IPod Nano Firmware crash, reproducable

I was recently given an iPod nano 4GB for my birthday. My review is here: http://megaphone.unixdaemons.com/?p=25
I'm subscribed to several podcasts. I use the latest version of iTunes on Windows XP. This morning I sync'd up my podcasts and there were two new episodes (I am subscribed to a total of 5 shows, and 2 shows had each a new episode). Before sync'ing up the iPod, I decided to do some cleanup.
Through iTunes, I cleared everything on my iPod (songs and podcasts). I noticed that although the podcast episodes themselves were cleared, the podcast show FOLDERS still existed on the iPod, but were empty.
After some playing around, i noticed that if you have at least one empty podcast folder (I don't know why iTunes doesn't garbage collect empty podcast folders?), the iPod nano firmware boots up, and you can browse the high-level menu items EXCEPT FOR MUSIC. If you click on the "Music" high-level menu item, the firmware crashes and the Apple logo appears on the nano screen as it resets itself. If you try to just hit "play" without entering the Music sub-menu it actually does play and you can skip forward and backward. But the moment you try to browse the Music sub-folder, the OS crashes.
My workaround is, since I have 5 podcast show folders on the iPod, to keep at least ONE episode from each in each folder, and this works just fine, although my iPod now stores some old shows, taking up some space, even though I've already listened to them.
Help?
Cheers,
Bosko.

So I called Apple Support and apparently the problem has not yet been reported but while talking to the service rep found a more viable workaround.
The bug seems to be that if you have Podcast episodes in iTunes that you drag over to your iPod, the first time you do so, a directory underneath the "Podcasts" category on your iPod will be created to store episodes for the given show. If you then go ahead and highlight each episode within that show's folder on your iPod with iTunes, right-click, and click on "Clear", you'll notice that while the episode disappears, the empty directory FOR THAT SHOW will remain within "Podcasts" on your iPod.
And that's where the problem is. The iPod nano firmware seems to crap itself when you then try to access the "Music" top-level menu item if there is at least one empty podcast show directory on it.
The workaround to not waste any space is to access the iPod via iTunes, and instead of clearing individual shows, right-click on the podcast show's folder itself and click on "clear", this will properly get rid of all the episodes within that show AS WELL AS THE SHOW'S FOLDER.
Hopefully someone will fix the firmware bug in the future. For now, this is how to deal with it.
Cheers,
Bosko

  • Downgrading iPod Nano Firmware

Does anybody know how to downgrading apple iPod Nano Firmware ?

It may be on Apple's site somewhere, but transmitting it any other way is piracy and therefore a violation of the terms of this forum.
Downgrading firmware is almost never an appropriate way to troubleshoot. If you post complete descriptions of your specific problems, we could probably provide some better ideas.

  • New iPod nano chromatic crashes computer

I have an iMac version 10.4.11. My daughter just bought a new iPod nano chromatic and whenever we try to use it on that computer, it crashes and a window pops up demanding a mandatory restart. There was no way to even register the iPod and it never showed up in the iTunes library. My son has a first generation nano and my wife has the next generation of nano that came with the computer when we bought it, and both work fine. We returned the iPod nano chromatic and bought a new one, thinking it was a faulty iPod, but the second iPod caused the same problem. We tried the new one on my MacBook Pro 10.5.something new-generation laptop and it showed up and we registered it. When we tried the iPod again on the home computer and it still crashes it. We cannot use the iPod on my laptop because it belongs to my employer and if they need it back sometime, then the iPod ill be useless. So does anyone have a good answer besides "buy a new iMac?"

We did solve this problem by connecting the ipod charger directly into the computer instead of through the usb hub (which is a usb 2.0 so I don't know why that would be a problem and none of our other ipods have a problem connecting through the hub). A real hassle as the computer has only three usb slots (are you listening Apple?!). We had used the hub to hook up everything (camera, ipods, SD card reader) -- but kept the keyboard and mouse and the hub directly connected to the computer. Now we have the mouse on the hub instead to make room for the ipod on the computer usb. So far, so good, but it would make things much easier if the iMac would have more built in usb slots on the back.

  • Ipod nano keep crashing my machine

    Hello everyone,
I currently installed the new update 06-28 for my ipod nano, I guess I didn't disconnect my ipod properly (i.e. safely remove hardware before I unplug it). So now when I turn on the ipod itself, I have lost all the songs/photos however in the memory section it shows I have used 1.3gb. When I try to connect my ipod to my pc, it just want to crash every window I open (i.e. When I open "my computer" it just freezes, same thing applies to different windows. Then it jumps to a black screen) So I've followed the 5 R's rule suggested from apple. I tried using the ipod updater to restore my ipod, but when it was initializing, the ipod updater window freezes. The itunes does not recongize my ipod at all. Everytime i turn my ipod on, it starts off with the select language page. And therefore I wonder did I do some serious damage to my ipod? I have reintalled the newest itunes and ipod updater too, but still doesn't solve the problem.
Totally frustrated, any help will be appreicated. Thanks
    Ray

    Hello again,
    Disconnect your iPod from computer.
Try resetting it (hold menu and center down together for 6 seconds), then put it into disk mode. Connect your iPod back to your computer and see if things work.
    See if this might help...
Trouble installing iPod, iTunes, or Quicktime software in Windows
Also, something else you can do is what has helped a lot for some when they're having iPod Updater recognition problems; you might wanna do, if it might fix your problem.
Pick up your iPod, hold it over a carpeted surface, with the play/pause vertically facing the ground. Then drop it at waist-height.

  • Ipod nano a crashed computer and important pics

I have a 1st generation ipod nano that after my computer crashed is unknown to it and so now it has some really important pics i want to keep but every time i try it says it will delete everything does anyone know how to get around this. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

You'll need to the help of some sort of third party software to assist you with this task.  Here is one option.

It might not hurt to Google for more.
Keep in mind that these pics are no longer in their original size and resolution, but instead are now scaled down thumbnail versions of the original, optimized to fit on your iPod's display.

  • IPod Nano Firmware v1.1

Where, oh where can one find a list of bugs fixed by the new Nano firmware v1.1 update?

What you really want is the list of bugs introduced.
There's one that's really annoying me: when I hit the centre button to get to the ratings screen the user interface often freezes for a few seconds. When it does eventually go to the ratings screen it ends up in a bizarre state that pressing the centre button doesn't take you back to the main screen again, instead it scrolls the screen sideways to reveal the ratings screen again. This never used to happen.

  • IPod nano screen crash

ok, this was a gift from a friend who lives in canada so I'm furious. He bought it from some store and my mother brought it here to Egypt. It worked fine at first, but the screen used to mess up every now and then. It was and still is, in mint physical condition. I left it inactive for 5 hrs so it automatically hibernated as usual. After I reactivated it, the screen was all messed up and belive me it was never subjected to pressure or any kind of fluid. I can still scroll around and music still plays but the screen is bent out of shape. part of it is still fine but the middle left lower part is dead. My mother is returning to canada 2nd of november. What am I supposed to do?
I think my iPod was defective since I bought it because the screen was messy every time I reactivated the iPod. Could this be a software problem or is this an LCD crash?
    HELP!!!

The warranty that comes with your product is "global" so you should be able to request support under warranty by first registering the product on this website using the product serial number (from the box)
Visit the support section of this site to request support and advise on the issue you are having
Apple will send a box to you I believe which you can use to package up and return your Nano for service or replacement.
It may take you a couple of weeks to get it back fixed but this is the process I would follow.

  • Ipod nano connection crashes computer

Please help! I have managed to install itunes for my new nano and get some music transferred to the player. However since this first time connecting if I connect the nano or try to update it in iTunes the computer shuts down instantly. Im currently running service pack 2 for windows XP. This shutdown does not happen unless Itunes is running, ie the computer finds the nano when connected without any problems. Can anyone help?

    Maurice,
have you updated your iPod software with the latest Updater?: iPod Updater 2005-09-23 http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodupdater20050923.html
Install it on the computer first, without having the iPod connected. After that go to Programs-iPod-iPod Updater and open the program. Connect iPod when prompted and try to update. If this option is highlighted, you ought to reset your iPod with the Updater which will erase all personal data (but since your music is hopefully still in iTunes, don't worry). After that you will be prompted to connect the iPod to the AC charger to write the new software on the iPod's HD. Now you will be able to load your iPod again.
    Hope this helps.

  • Apple checklist for fixing iPod nano firmware!

Sorry i just wanted to leave a list somewhere! just to make sure that i have vented my concerns - i love the new interface, just these few bugs really nark me off over time, so i wanted to list them so that apple is definitely aware that they exist and can fix them! even if noone reads this - at least i can say i submitted my observations to apple somehow.
    1. Camera Photos in full screen mode go black
    2. Once, while playing music, songs didn’t play - stuck at 0:00, album arts were all like static television images even in coverflow
    3. Cover flow shows too much of same album arts.. should be grouped into albums NOT artists
    4. ‘P’ in title bar when syncing with time in title option on
    5. In podcast menu, selecting a podcast, then pressing menu, takes back to podcast menu, but photo thumbnails no longer load!
    6. Occasionally nano has turned off for no reason.. inexplicably

    9. Select a video podcast to play. The screen goes black briefly and then you are returned to the podcast list. Select the podcast a second time and the podcast plays.

  • IPod Nano crashes iTunes

Hi, every time we time we connect my daughter's 4th generation iPod Nano it crashes iTunes. The iPod is just a year old. It has worked fine until a week ago. iTunes runs fine on its own.
We also sync an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and the new Nano. We do not have a problem with these.
Does anyone have any ideas what is causing the problem with the 4th Gen Nano?

I am really upset. I have an ipod classic 2 years old. I plugged in my ipod into the computer to create a new playlist. I started adding music to my list and after a few minutes and then itunes crashed. I closed the program and tried again. started ok then crashed again. I tried to close the program and it finally closed and totally erased my ipod 10,600+ songs GONE! Now most of those songs cannot be easily replaced. I am a music teacher and use it everyday to do my job. Now I am stuck redoing it. After restoring the original settings and a disk check, my ipod still crashes itunes. Even before it did this. I would randomly get songs that just would not play that would before. What do I do now. I am really mad!

  • How do you troubleshoot a crashed IPod nano 7?

  • File size of Notes on iPod nano?

    Hello,
my question is about the file size of notes to be handled by the iPod nano.
I have copied several ASCII text-files into the Notes folder of my iPod nano. Each has a size of approx. 20 kByte. Windows Explorer shows them in the iPod Notes folder with their original size.
However, when opening one of the text files on the iPod nano, text is only displayed until approx. 700 words (approx. 4000 characters), which corresponds to approx. 4 kByte. The larger rest of the file is not displayed, as if it was cut.
    Is this an error?
Or is 4 kByte the max. size of text files which can be displayed as notes on the iPod nano?
I have updated the iPod nano firmware recently with release 1.1.
Thanks in advance for any help!

There is an online utility for doing this - will save you tons of time AND adds links so you go from one section of the larger file to the next:
    http://www.ambience.sk/ipod-ebook-creator/ipod-book-notes-text-conversion.php
Until they inprove the file size that the iPods can read, this is your only real way to use your iPod as an ebook reader.

  • When i connect my ipod nano to my computer it does not light up and i get a message saying the usb devive has malfunctioned

I need some help here as I believe my ipod nano has crashed or something is terribly wrong. When I plug in the usb to my laptop I get a message saying the usb device has malfunctioned. My ipod does not light up. I have tried powering it on manually and nothing works. Help, this is going to ruin my workouts!!!

I'm not sure what the glitch was, but after I posted the problem, I called Apple and got a rep to walk me through some troubleshooting tips such as holding down the nano power button while plugging in the usb cable....nothing worked. Eventually, they scheduled a maintenance /replacement service.
I got the box yesterday and was about to put it in for shipping to Apple, when I decided to try connecting it to my laptop one last time. Viola! it started back up again and is currenting syncing as I type. Guess it was just a bad glitch of some sort. Anyone with a similar issue, perhaps you may want to wait a few days and see if it solves the issue.I hope this helps.

  • IPod Nano 7th Gen says "Unsupported. Accessory is not supported" when trying to charge / sync

iPod Nano 7th Gen says "Unsupported. Accessory is not supported" when trying to charge / sync with official apple lightening cable.
It worked for almost a year then suddenly began to say that. My computer [windows], lightening cable and my power brick [all apple official] are all the same as they were when it was working. The iPod is almost a year old now, and has worked perfectly up until about a week ago.
I have tried resetting the iPod, plugging it into different charging sources but it keeps saying "Unsupported. Accessory is not supported"
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?
    Thanks.

Your iPod Nano firmware and iTunes updated to the current versions?
It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.
