Ipod nano formatted to mac / pc?

i formatted a nano ipod to a mac and uploaded music to it as a gift. the recipient unfortunately has a PC; to plug into the PC, he needs to restore the ipod to factory setting (thereby losing all the music).  if he reconfigures it for a PC, can i still add music to it from a MAC?

Probably not.  It isn't legal to share your iTunes content with someone else, though, anyway...

• Using an Ipod Nano with a Mac OS X and a PC on Windows XP

Hello,
I have a MAC OS X at home and a PC with Windows XP at work. I have been using my Ipod Nano at home for quite a lon time, but I have tried to use it at work for the first time.
However, when I try to see the music content on my PC, it says that my Ipod is formatted for MAC and that I need to reformat it if I want to use it with the PC.
The problem is that if I reformat it, I will lose all its content and I am afraid to be obliged to reformat it when I want to connect it to my MAC again.
How can I do to be able to use my Ipod with my MAC and with my PC?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Pentium 4   Windows XP

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. Macs can read Windows drives so you could restore and format the iPod on a PC. Strictly speaking using a Windows formatted iPod on a Mac isn't supported however many people use one without any issue. iTunes will allow you to use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac; however, Apple currently only supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. Alternatively there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows, this is one for instance gets good reviews: XPlay 2

• I was given an 80gb ipod classic formated with mac os. Is there any way to connect it to my windows pc so I can transfer the song to my library?

I was given an 80gb ipod classic formatted with mac os. Is there any way to connect it to my windows pc so I can transfer the song to my library? When I try to connect to my pc I get a message asking me if I want to format the drive. I want to try to save the 15000 songs that are already on the ipod. Any suggestions?

The iPod and iTunes are designed so that you cannot transfer music on an iPod to another iTunes Library. This is because the 15,000 songs do not belong to you and you have no legal right to keep them.

Hey there Antonio7,
You can transfer your iTunes purchases from your iPod nano to your computer with this article:
Re-download or transfer your iTunes Store purchases from an iPhone, iPad or iPod to a computer
Transfer your purchases to your computer
Before you transfer your purchases, make sure that your computer is authorized with the same Apple IDaccount you used to make the purchases. Learn how to authorize your computer using iTunes.
If you bought the iTunes Store content on your device using multiple Apple ID accounts, you'll need to authorize the computer for each one.
To transfer purchases from your device to a computer:
Connect your device to the computer. Wait for its icon to appear in iTunes.
Go to File > Devices. If you're using iTunes for Windows and can't see the menu bar, learn how to turn on iTunes menus in Windows.
Choose Transfer Purchases from [device name].
This feature works only for content bought from the iTunes Store. Any items that you imported from audio CDs or received from other sources won't copy from your device to the iTunes library. However, all podcasts from your device's Podcasts app and copies of all PDFs and books from your device's iBooks app will transfer to the computer. Learn how to transfer media to your iTunes library.
Then you can sync the music to your iPod touch in the same way you sync music to any device:

• How to format iPod Nano on a Mac but for a PC

WE got my dad an iPod nano. It's an 8 gb. He did not have a computer so we were loading up for him on our Macbook. Now he has a PC that uses Windows and he's got high speed internet. He downloaded iTunes and wants to control his iPod himself now. However, the Nano is formated for a Mac and won't work on his computer.
Can I re-format the nano using my MacBook? I need to re-format it to work on his computer. I was unable to do anything with it on his computer last night.

Here's what I want to do: using my MacBook, I want to re-format or "restore" the ipod nano to work on a PC using Windows.
You cannot. When you Restore on iTunes for Mac, it will format the iPod with HFS+, which Windows cannot read.
When you Restore with iTunes for Windows, it will format it FAT32, which will work iTunes for Macs or Windows.
So Restore it with iTunes for Windows and then you can use it with either computer. It will only take a few minutes to Restore it.

• IPod nano gen 4 Mac formatted: if I do a PC format, will it wipe out existing songs, audiobooks etc.?

My PC wants me to format the nano. Will this cause all the existing data to be wiped out and the Mac reformatted to work on that computer again?

Niel, does this mean a PC (Windows 7) formatted ipod nano can be synched on a Mac (with songs, etc.) and comingled with data previously synched from the PC? What I would like to do is download into the ipod nano stuff from both the PC and the Mac with the PC being the primary computer connected to the nano.

• IPod Nano Sync with Mac, but iPod formatted for Windows

I finally changed to the Mac platform and all my iPods and iPhones were synced with a Windows based computer. While my iPhones were not a problem, my iPod Nano (4GB 2nd generation) seemed not be recognized by my iMac.
I can't seem to get my iMac to show the iPod under Devices to reformat it. Anyone have any advice to give?
I have plugged it in to a my Windows based work laptop and it seems to work fine. However I don't sync with that machine and I have already sold my old Windows based computer it was synced to.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I have three iPods: 40GB iPod photo, 2GB black iPod nano and 1GB iPod shuffle. Each one has it's own playlist to auto sync songs from (technically, the 40GB iPod is synchronized manually, but the other two have playlists to sync automatically from). They each have different names so iTunes knows they're each different. So, you shouldn't have any trouble keeping just two iPods separate with your Mac mini or iMac.

• IPod nano formatted in BootCamp, can it be re-authorized on another PC?

If I've formatted an iPod nano in BootCamp on my mac I am assuming that means the hard drive is formatted for PCs... is that correct?
basically, I'd like to load songs and video on an iPod nano that I can take with me on vaction and enjoy. at the end of the trip however, i'd like to give the nano to someone as a gift. most likely, they will want to add to it meaning they would have to wipe it clean... is that correct?
so if I gave them a DVD with whatever I've preloaded, they can wipe the iPod clean on their PC (reauthorizing it to be used on that PC) and then reload whatever they'd like to reload.
does any of this make sense? I hope so. I just don't want to create too much of a headache for wiping the iPod clean and restarting it.

Wesjohnson,
It pretty much depends on what enviroment and development tool you are using. The simplest way would be to add it into your system CLASSPATH, but that's not really the preferred way of doing things. If you are using any IDE, it should allow you to add required libraries for your current project, and then these would be used in the compilation stage.
Or if you are using ANT to build your application, then the build.xml should define the classpath used for the <javac>-task somewhere.
Don't forget that you need to ship the libraries with your application as well, otherwise you'll be getting lots of NoClassDefFoundErrors at runtime.

• Ipod nano formatting "forever"

Hi,
I bought an ipod nano a few weeks ago and still cannot get it to work with my laptop. As part of the installation process it says that the ipod needs to be formatted and it tries to format for hours and hours. Displays the "do not disconnect" forever, and if I open up itunes it does not recognize that an Ipod is connected.
Colleagues in the US who also have ipods have tried connecting my ipod to their laptop and have no issues, everything works fine.
I am from Europe, my laptop has European settings (and standards I guess) and I am beginning to suspect that an ipod from the US does not go with a laptop from Europe, or then I have some settings on my laptop that differs.
Does anyone know what to do, what might cause this?
Would be greatful for any hints / help.

We had a very similar situation. Here's what we found..
Open up 'My Computer' and check to see if you have an 'E' drive mapped. If so, and it's pointing to a network share, try disconnecting the share and remapping it to a different letter. Apparently the iPod only likes to use 'E' as its designation. It works for your colleagues because they don't have a script mapping the 'E' drive for them in their profile. At least, that's what happened with us.

• IPod nano - outlook contacts & mac iTunes?

I would like to be able to sync my iPod nano with iTunes on my Mac and with my Outlook contacts on my work PC.
Read that the first time you plug in the iPod nano to a PC or Mac, it formats for the proper system (PC or HFS+). Also concerned that the iPod will sync to only one computer.
Hoping there's a way to do this... sure I'm not the only user that would rather use a Mac for personal use and iTunes but have to use Outlook on a PC for employer.

I can't speak for the nano, but on other iPods, the Mac version of iTunes will sync to a Windows-formatted iPod. So if you format the nano as Windows, the Mac should be able to sync iTunes to it. I'm not sure how the Outlook sync works though on the PC. If it uses iTunes, you may be out of luck, since it'll probably try to sync the music too.

• Ipod Nano formatting and installation problems

I get this screen every time I try to install and format my iPod Nano using the included software. What should I do?

Hi niedec,
For starters, download the latest iTunes and iPod Updater from Apple. Chances are that they are more up-to-date than the software you got on CD:

• IPod nano breaks my Mac

My iPod nano is causing trouble with my Mac. Sometimes iTunes does not even recognize it. It seems like the only way to get them to play together is if I open iTunes first and then connect the iPod while it is on. If it is already connected when I open iTunes, they don't connect. When they are making nice, and I finish a sync, the iPod still flashes "Do not disconnect". Then when I eject it, it still flashes "Do not disconnect" and if I close iTunes and try to reopen it, it won't. I end up having to force close. Also, ejecting the iPod from the desktop does not work. Then when I just unplug it, I get the warning that a disk was not ejected properly. At times, after "improperly ejecting" the iPod it also causes other programs to not open properly.
I have tried restoring the iPod to no avail.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
