Ipod nano formatting "forever"

Hi,
I bought an ipod nano a few weeks ago and still cannot get it to work with my laptop. As part of the installation process it says that the ipod needs to be formatted and it tries to format for hours and hours. Displays the "do not disconnect" forever, and if I open up itunes it does not recognize that an Ipod is connected.
Colleagues in the US who also have ipods have tried connecting my ipod to their laptop and have no issues, everything works fine.
I am from Europe, my laptop has European settings (and standards I guess) and I am beginning to suspect that an ipod from the US does not go with a laptop from Europe, or then I have some settings on my laptop that differs.
Does anyone know what to do, what might cause this?
Would be greatful for any hints / help.

We had a very similar situation. Here's what we found..
Open up 'My Computer' and check to see if you have an 'E' drive mapped. If so, and it's pointing to a network share, try disconnecting the share and remapping it to a different letter. Apparently the iPod only likes to use 'E' as its designation. It works for your colleagues because they don't have a script mapping the 'E' drive for them in their profile. At least, that's what happened with us.

• Does anyone know how to pull songs off my iPod nano formatted for a Mac to a PC?

I Have an old iPod nano that was originally formatted for a Mac that is no longer around.  I am trying to import the songs onto my pc but cannot because re formatting will erase everything.  Any suggestions?

Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats), so you can't use a Mac-formatted iPod to move your music to a Windows PC.

• IPod nano formatted in BootCamp, can it be re-authorized on another PC?

If I've formatted an iPod nano in BootCamp on my mac I am assuming that means the hard drive is formatted for PCs... is that correct?
basically, I'd like to load songs and video on an iPod nano that I can take with me on vaction and enjoy. at the end of the trip however, i'd like to give the nano to someone as a gift. most likely, they will want to add to it meaning they would have to wipe it clean... is that correct?
so if I gave them a DVD with whatever I've preloaded, they can wipe the iPod clean on their PC (reauthorizing it to be used on that PC) and then reload whatever they'd like to reload.
does any of this make sense? I hope so. I just don't want to create too much of a headache for wiping the iPod clean and restarting it.

Wesjohnson,
It pretty much depends on what enviroment and development tool you are using. The simplest way would be to add it into your system CLASSPATH, but that's not really the preferred way of doing things. If you are using any IDE, it should allow you to add required libraries for your current project, and then these would be used in the compilation stage.
Or if you are using ANT to build your application, then the build.xml should define the classpath used for the <javac>-task somewhere.
Don't forget that you need to ship the libraries with your application as well, otherwise you'll be getting lots of NoClassDefFoundErrors at runtime.

• Ipod Nano formatting and installation problems

I get this screen every time I try to install and format my iPod Nano using the included software. What should I do?

Hi niedec,
For starters, download the latest iTunes and iPod Updater from Apple. Chances are that they are more up-to-date than the software you got on CD:

• Ipod nano formatted to mac / pc?

i formatted a nano ipod to a mac and uploaded music to it as a gift. the recipient unfortunately has a PC; to plug into the PC, he needs to restore the ipod to factory setting (thereby losing all the music).  if he reconfigures it for a PC, can i still add music to it from a MAC?

Probably not.  It isn't legal to share your iTunes content with someone else, though, anyway...

• New Ipod mini formating forever

I am not sure if I am doing something wrong. I just got the IPOD mini 4g today and I put in the install disc, it told me to connect the IPOD and then said the IPOD needed to be formatted. This was over 30 mins ago.
The setup screen shows no avail buttons to click with a bar that says "waiting for ipod.." and keeps recycling. My IPOD shows do not disconnect and shows a circle thing with arrows in the top left.
Is it working right? I mean its been over 30 mins? Should I disconnect the USB and try a different port? Just wondering if the "waiting for IPOD..." and time is normal on a new one.

I just saw this:
"If 1 still not able to recongize your iPod by the computer then you have to put your iPod to DiskMode i.e. plug your iPod to the AC charges, do a RESET and press "Select"+"Play" keys, you will see the message "Disk Mode" in few sec. Then you need to connect your iPod with your computer, and hope that it will be recongized. If you are lucky to reach this stage then you simply need to restore your iPod updater, and your iPod should be back to normal. Please note that You may need to plug and unplug few times in order to let your iPod to be recongized."

• How can I get an item that has the broadcast icon next to it into MP3 format so I can put it on my ipod nano?

Question: how can I get an item in my itunes library, on my mac os 10.6.7 that has a broadcast icon next to it into MP3 format so I can play it on my ipod? right now it won't let me, and it's very frustrating!!!! thanks

I might have misunderstood what you mean by the "broadcast icon," but if you are talking about an audio stream, then there is just no way you can convert a stream to MP3. What this would involve is either recording the stream, and then you would just be replaying the recorded audio on your iPod (is this what you are trying to achieve?), or reading the stream directly on your iPod, which an iPod nano does not support (it would need wireless connectivity).
Hope this helps

• How to use Windows formatted iPod nano to move music to a new Mac?

Hi all,
I need to transfer my iPhone's musics, songs, apps and photo, etc to the Mac and I came across this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329" guide at Apple Support site since I owned a iPod nano.
My questions is since my iPod nano is configured for Windows will the Mac be able to read it since it's stated clearly in the guide "While a Windows formatted iPod may work on a Mac, Apple supports this configuration only with iPod shuffle."
If I follow through the guide, 1. Switch the iPod to manual update and enable disk use, 2. Locating and consolidating the iTunes Media folder, 3. Copy iTunes folder to iPod. I will still need to restore the iPod to work in Mac and end up nothing left inside meaning songs, photo all erased.
Also, anyone using third party software like http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/ Can advise if it's good to use this? And if iPod nano configured for Windows can works with this?
Need other more solution other this to transfer the mentioned data to Mac.
Thanks.

iPhone… iPod… iPod Nano… which one it is? You are trying to transfer music from what source, using what medium, and to what target?
I came across this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329"
it's stated clearly in the guide "While a Windows formatted iPod may work on a Mac, Apple supports this configuration only with iPod shuffle."
Where exactly is this stated? I am unable to find this statement in the KB article you mentioned. And are you talking iPhone or iPod? This KB article applies only to iPod.

• Using a Windows formatted iPod Nano (4th Gen) with Bootcamp on a Mac(Win XP

Hey I was wondering if anyone knows if you can use a previously formatted iPod Nano (4th Gen) with a Mac that has XP Bootcamped on to it. If the Nano is placed in manually manage music with the original computer it was formatted with, will it be able to accept music, movies, podcasts, etc from the windows on the Mac or will they still be incompatible?

Well, I have 4 internal drive bays filled already, is there room somewhere for 5th one in the box? I wasn't aware of it if there is?? My mac is MacPro3,1, early 2008.
That macsales.com link is interesting but I'm not in the US (I'm in Croatia), and all those brands are supidly expensive here, that $80 esata docking station is almost $200 here... bahh. For that price I may as well buy a whole new 3TB external disk, I want to dock the old one to save money.
I've browsed around and I've found Icy Box docks, which have much more reasonable prices:
BOX IB-110StUS2-B
ICY BOX IB-111StUS2-Wh
ICY BOX IB-115StUS2HC
They all claim to have OSX support... anyone have any experience with them?

• IPod Nano would not connect to Windows or Format. *SOLVED*

Ok, first post and I am just posting to thank those who have posted some different things to try, thanks to you guys, I have a working iPod Nano. Here is what I tried...
The Problem
iTunes would not see my nano and could not format the nano during install. Would just sit on "waiting for ipod..."
The Solution -This worked for me, so I hope it works for you.
After reading on this forum about problems and ways to fix them, I found out a few things. DO NOT install the iTunes that comes on the disk with the nano. Download the latest version off of www.itunes.com and install. Once finished, you will still not see the nano. That's ok. You need to download the software updater for the nano. This can be found @ www.apple.com/support/downloads and click on the iPod updater 2005-11-17. Download and install this program. After the program is installed, do one more thing before running it. (If you try, it will prob lock up, atleast that's what it did on me.) You need to check what drive letter that Windows has set the nano to be. My Windows install is set to E:/ and the nano was set to C:/ automatically. You need to right click on My Computer and click manage. After that opens, click on Disk Management and follow the prompts to change the drive letter to something else. I set mine to Z:/ since nothing is set there. After you have done this, run the iPod updater 2005-11-17 and choose the reset option after it has noticed the iPod. It will format the nano and re-install the new software on the nano. After that is complete, start up iTunes and it should see the nano and automatically help you set up some options. After that, enjoi!
Now, this helped me and I installed and re-installed iTunes a few times. One crucial piece of information, is to restart Windows whenever the software asks you to. Do not take this lightly! I recommend starting fresh with no iTunes or iPod software and begin at the top. Others have written good posts on how to properly remove iTunes and iPod software. Do it to the letter!
Well, that's what I did and hopefully it will help you too.

• I let windows format my ipod nano?

Today I bought a new ipod nano but the only one in store was an openbox ipod. since i am in a time crunch i decided to risk it and get the openbox ipod. i then took it home and plugged it into my pc (windows 8). a windows popup appeared that said i needed to format the disk to continue. so without thought i said ok. windows then reformatted my ipod. the ipod now does not turn off but instead displays black and white "do not disconnect" and "OK to disconnect" screens. holding down the sleep button and the home button result in the apple symbol and then it says to plug it into itunes. when i do so itunes doesnt recognize it. i have the latest version on itunes and have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes.
my main question is how to do a factory reset. i know how to do it once the ipod is recognized in itunes but not otherwise.
Cheers, T

• How to format iPod Nano on a Mac but for a PC

WE got my dad an iPod nano. It's an 8 gb. He did not have a computer so we were loading up for him on our Macbook. Now he has a PC that uses Windows and he's got high speed internet. He downloaded iTunes and wants to control his iPod himself now. However, the Nano is formated for a Mac and won't work on his computer.
Can I re-format the nano using my MacBook? I need to re-format it to work on his computer. I was unable to do anything with it on his computer last night.

Here's what I want to do: using my MacBook, I want to re-format or "restore" the ipod nano to work on a PC using Windows.
You cannot. When you Restore on iTunes for Mac, it will format the iPod with HFS+, which Windows cannot read.
When you Restore with iTunes for Windows, it will format it FAT32, which will work iTunes for Macs or Windows.
So Restore it with iTunes for Windows and then you can use it with either computer. It will only take a few minutes to Restore it.
