Ipod nano in ipod sock...no scratches

I seem to read nothing but complaints everywhere about the nano and scratches. What a lame deal to have a scratched up ipod! However I personally have not had this trouble at all. I have been carrying my nano half the time (I have had it for weeks now) in my small jeans pocket like Jobs at the keynote. The other half the time in my pocket with my keys, change, earbuds and everything else in that pocket. However in both these places it was in my ipod sock. Which is entirely too big for it, but it seems to even be an odd way of showing it off. When you pull that sock out of your pocket to show somebody and it looks like an empty sock people's mouth's drop when you pull the nano out and tell them what it does. Regardless, my point is.... I have not gone out of my way to be easy on the thing, I use it like I would anything else. I took the plastic off the screen and everything. Not one scratch on the thing. I do not have a black ipod though, which I know has most the complaints. But so far this thing seems easier for me to not scratch than my other ipods that scratched up right away. Which those got scratched while being in the sock I might add.
For the record, I did not post this in attempt for people to disregard what others are complaining about...there posts are just as valid as mine. I am just sharing my experience with the nano and the sock.
on a small note...my motorola rokr phone's screen is the one Iratating me. It smudges like something I have never seen befor. Maybe I have oily ears or something...ha, ha, ha

Thanks for your positive post. I am glad to hear your good experience with the support. I have also had my goods and my bads with support. Overall I am most pleased with these forums. Although they can't send new product or fix most hardware in the forums, they seem to help the most. People like me will post little things (tips) they have learned with a product (like using the socks) that alot of people think at first are stupid but later on prove usefull. Then you have the level 3,4,5 posters that fix all the problems that people like me screw up on their computer (these people are awesome!). Last of all you have the people that complain. I have done my fair share of it expecially with the nano vs camera connector. But if it wasn't for people complaining their wouldn't be a new nano coming to your probley. I also wouldn't have known to be aware of the scratching issues. Although I have not had that problem doesn't mean I couldn't.
People also do have to realize you see alot of negative's in these forums, but thats because this is where people learn to go if they have problems. Its not a chat room. Apple sent out a whole lot more nano's then the post's upset here with them. Even if there was a thousand or two posts on scratched nanos, thats nothing compared to how many people didn't post. I believe the 1% you are refering to is also 1 tenth of 1 percent refering to the cracked screens, not the scratching. As far as I know apple claimed this is the same material that they used with the fourth gen ipod and its not defective. Again though I am not defending apple as they should replace any products that are truly defective.
As far as the pledge wipes...I have never gone that far. I just use the ipod sock to wipe mine off. I know it seems rough but it works for me with no scratch's. I have also never even dreamed about buying a black ipod. Although they look awesome and apple puts them out, black anything scratch's easy. We all know that. If you bought a white car and a black car which one are you going to drive through a rough car wash or drive down a dusty road. Once you do are you going to demand a refund. I just meaning you find life easier with light colored products. Black products require entirely too much care for me.
Again the purpose of this post is not to disagree with anybody who has had scratching issues. Hopefully mine doesn't end up that way anytime soon.
Speaking of complaining this article and the interpretation of their poll in this article are driving me nuts.

I'm horrified that Apple have released a video iPod and stuck a tiny 4:3 ratio screen on it. I know that 16:9 widescreen has only just appeared in the good old US of A, but as one of the countries at the forefront of Hi-Def TV (which has 16;9 widescreen images as standard) I am quite bemused - what are you going to watch; black and white re-runs of 'I love Lucy' - again. Or perhaps just even smaller letterboxed films, (special 1 inch high presentation of Star Wars Episode 3 ?) TV shows and pop promos? ( most of which are now shot 16:9 widescreen especially if they are sourced HD)
I hate to say this but buy yourself a nano for your music (Apple's music players still beat every other one out there) and get a PSP for watching films/videos !

Using an iPod Nano and iPod Mini with one PC

I have an iPod Mini which I bought last year and I'm thinking of buying a Nano for my wife. I only have one Laptop PC. Can I use both iPods with one Laptop and update both from the already installed iTunes ? I don't want to create a second PC user ID/account. Will I have to load the iPod Nano s/w onto my Laptop and will this affect my Mini s/w or is it totally separate ? Are there any problems with using to different iPods on a single PC ?

There is only one iPod updater (http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/):
iPod Updater 2006-01-10 includes iPod Software 1.1 for the new iPod, new iPod Software 1.1 for iPod nano, new iPod Software 1.2.1 for iPod with color display, new iPod Software 1.4.1 for iPod mini, and new iPod Software 3.1.1 for iPod with Click Wheel. iPod Updater 2006-01-10 contains the same software versions as iPod Updater 2005-11-17 for all other iPod models.
It recognises which iPod is plugged in when you attach it for update.

Experience with iPod nano and iPod socks?

After discussing with the Apple Helpline about the scratches on my nano, they quickly proposed to send my some iPod socks for free in order to protect the nano (is this like implicitely admitting that something went wrong?).
My question: Does anybody have experience with iPod socks and the nano, i.e. do they scratch the nano as well (as somebody on another forum has posted)?

I remember this same thing with the iPod Mini. That was released in February 2004 and there were a huge number of cases by around April. But the mini was announced in January which ment the third party makers had a whole month to design and make cases.
The ironic thing....people didnt need a case for the mini. Its was scratch resistant to begin with, however the nano is damaged by finger acid!!!

Transfer content from Old iPod nano to iPod touch

I have bought a new iPod touch G3 32gb 3.1.3.
However, realizing my computer has been formatted a couple of months ago, iTunes won't keep anything in my iPod Nano G3 4gb when it's not plugged in.
All the songs and videos and stuff are the only files I have in my iPod nano.
Is there any way that I can transfer my Ipod Nano content (including songs playlists videos and pictures) to my new iPod touch?

Open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone

Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. Once everything is back in iTunes you can add it to your iPod Touch.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

The iPhones are recognized by the computer (and can backup to the cloud), but on connection, nothing happens with iTunes.
With the iPods I get the not-very-helpful message:

An iPod had been detected, but could not be identified properly.
Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again.

On clicking More Info, I am presented with 10 steps to take.
I have done every single one of these steps, with the following added bonuses: each time I have carried out any of the steps, I have disconnected the device; disconnected the leads; turned off the device; I have also uninstalled iTunes and installed 'the latest version'; I have restarted the computer, connected the device with brand new cables (the iPods require two different Apple cables: have tried both old and new versions of each).
Nothing I can do will make iTunes want to talk to these devices. It all worked perfectly up until the latest v. of iTunes.
I am perfectly prepared to insert a new HD into the computer, build a new version of the station (either Win8, Win7, XP .... even Vista to make my day even worse), but feel that this is a little extreeme!

I kept working at this after posting. On the sync page for the ipod on itunes library I chose to remove the iPods association with my old computer. It erased all the old content from the old computer and then put all my checked songs from the new computer on my iPod nano.

1 ipod nano + 2 ipod shuffles = confusion

i purchased 2 ipod shuffles for my sons at Christmas. I want to add them to my account and set up separate libraries for them. I have an ipod nano (3rd generation). Can I add them to my account and set up different libraries for all of us?

It's not an "account" (like the Apple ID you use with the iTunes Store). iPods sync to your iTunes library. You can sync as many iPods (and other Apple devices like iPhone and iPad) as you want to one iTunes library. You can set up each device to sync separately to the songs in your ONE iTunes library.
This is how I would do it... Create two playlists in your iTunes library, one each for your sons. Name them appropriately. Add the songs you want on each son's shuffle to their respective playlists. (If you want the same songs on both shuffle, you can just create one playlist.)
You can connect both shuffles at the same time (or one at a time). If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar. Each shuffle appears in the sidebar, under DEVICES. If both are connected, they are both listed there, and if you connect your nano, it is listed there as well. If you have not already, you should name the shuffles so ownership is clear. (You can rename an iPod by selecting it in the sidebar and clicking on its name a second time.)
Select one of the shuffles in the sidebar. To the right, the shuffle's Summary screen is shown. Toward the top, where it says Summary, click on Music to the right of Summary. This Music screen is where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to that iPod.
Check the box to Sync Music. Choose the option to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres. Below that, look under Playlists to find that new playlist you created for that son. Select (checkmark) it. You don't have to select anything else. When you click Apply, the songs from that playlist sync to the shuffle.
Repeat for the other shuffle, selecting the other son's playlist on its Music screen.
Going forward, to update each son's shuffle, just update their playlists in your iTunes library (add/remove songs). The shuffles do not need to be connected, so your sons can be using them. The next time you connect the shuffles (or when you click Sync if already connected), iTunes automatically updates each shuffle with the same changes.
You can keep using your iPod nano as you have been. The setup for two shuffle's does not affect the existing setup for your nano. And you can update the settings on your nano without affecting the shuffles. iTunes treats each device separately.

Or if I connect her nano to my itunes will it try to download the videos as well? Also in my itunes I have more songs than her nano will take (and songs she doesn't want)! can she download to hers manually as I just always sync mine

Yes, you can manage multiple iPods through one computer and iTunes library.

Yes, you could manually manage her nano while syncing yours, although it might be easier to sync both of them.
You see, you can create separate playlists for each iPod, one for each iPod to sync from.
This kind of technique is described as Method 2 (which I find convenient to use) in this article, which also has good info on how to manage multiple iPods with one computer:

Unless something is really wrong with your iTunes (which could happen, although not likely), iTunes should not start trying to transfering videos to the Nano, since nanos cannot play videos. And, since iTues can read what kind of iPod you have by it's serial number, it wouldn't attempt at doing that.

Until the iPhone 3G, 2nd Generation Touch, and the 4th Generation Nano you could still charge an iPod through the Firewire pin. With the ones I just listed there is not charging through the FW pins and the HiFi used this method to charge. There is an adapter you can order to allow charging:

My ipod nano 5th gen has grey 'scratches' underneath screen, fixes?

Last night I was in bed and I turned my ipod on and the screen was lighting up with grey lines which were like marks covering the battery bar and the time, the rest of the screen was clear. I tried to reset it but it stayed, I continued to use it normally today but it carried on playing music although I paused it then turned the songs off, when I went to turn the ipod off again the screen had lots of grey scratch-like marks over the album artwork and a big grey circle over where the title, artist and album should be. There aren't on the outside screen and could be from screens within, however not sure. Is there any way that this problem can be fixed?

Simple Question on using an iPod nano v iPod

I do not have an iPod, but am considering getting one. I have about a 10 gb library of music and have been using a 256 mb mp3 player for the last couple of years. So my process for getting music has been to pick what 50-60 songs I want to hear and load the songs manually. I realize if I get a 30 gb player, I can load my entire library to the unit and update periodically. My question is how iTunes manages music for mp3 players which are smaller than the library. 50-60 songs is one thing, but how do you manually load say 500 songs (i.e. 2 GB nano).
So I guess what is the most common route you ipod users use? Do I need to start making playlist? I currently do not. Does itunes shuffle these 500 songs when connected? Any insight would be appreciated.

If the iPod is smaller than your library there are a few things you can do. You can choose the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists". If you do this you can update any of the existing playlists you have leaving some out or create a playlist specifically for your iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used again. Another option is to set the iPod to "Manually manage songs and videos" and drag whatever you like to it: Managing content manually on iPod
Another way but one which I think is more difficult to manage is to choose the "Only sync checked items" option in the iPod Summary tab. By un-checking a song in iTunes, it will not be updated to the iPod and if already on the iPod, unchecking the song in iTunes will remove it from the iPod during the next update with iTunes.
For the automatic options iTunes will add what you have chosen to put on. You can create a Smart playlist that picks a random selection if you like and there is also an option to shuffle songs on the iPod.
