IPod Nano just froze for apparently no reason

I have never once had a problem with my iPod Nano. I've never dropped it, scratched it or done any damage to it what so ever. (I've had it for about 3 months now)
Just a few minutes ago I was listening to some songs on it. I hit the pause button and sifted through songs until I found what I wanted to listen to. I hit the pause button again to play the song and nothing happened. So I tried a different song and as I was sifting through to that song I noticed that the images that usually show the album artwork weren't showing up, just empty boxes. Then finally all the buttons stopped working.
I tried holding down the menu and select buttons but that didn't work.
I plugged it into my computer but iTunes didn't recognize it. I clicked on "My Computer" to see if it recognized it and I couldn't even get My Computer to open. It also froze. So then I unplugged my iPod Nano and My Computer opened up easily. So even though neither my iTunes software nor my My Computer actually show recognition on the screen, it seems to effect my computer when I plug the iPod Nano in.
I can't make any sense out of it. Hopefully someone can help. Thanks!
Jessica
iPod Nano 2GB   Windows XP   Only 86 songs loaded so I don't think it's overloaded.

I am having a similar problem. Twice now the screen has frozen - I can't scroll, or even turn it off. It does not dim. Once the battery wears down then I can plug it in and it will work again. Any ideas?

Try #2 and #3 in link below. If neither work, you most likely have a hardware issue.

  • I have an iPod Nano 6th Generation for just over three months and the down volume button is sticking.  Does anyone have a recommendation for resolving?

I have an iPod Nano 6th Generation for just over three months and the down volume button is sticking.  Does anyone have a recommendation for resolving?

Dont buy this model again, this is the most common problem and i have gone through 4 of these 6th gen nanos all with the same problem.  You can find youtube videos that show you how to fix it yourself but you run the risk of breaking your ipod, also opening the ipod voids any warrently.

  • Help, my iPod Nano just stopped working

Help I've had my iPod nano 7th generation for about 6 months now.  It's always worked fine until one day after charging it, it will no longer turn on.  It does get hot when I try to charge it or reboot it (reboot using the home and on/off button together).  Can anyone please help?

    Hi AliPe!
I have a website that I believe will help you troubleshoot this issue. The website is an iPod troubleshooting assistant, and it can be found right here:
Apple - Support - iPod nano - iTunes Troubleshooting Assistant

Just follow the troubleshooting steps suggested by that website and you should be on the right track. Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

  • Ipod nano still froze after holding "Menu" & center buttons.  Suggestions ?

I have a 1st generation ipod Nano which froze suddenly. I tried to hold "Menu" and center buttons together; the Apple logo showed up and returned to the same screen, and still froze. The battery is about 60% charged. Do I need to let the battery run out, or any other suggestions ? Thanks !!!!!!!!

    Hello rleung,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried forcing the iPod into Disk Mode and then connecting to iTunes to see you could perform a restore?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
Otherwise, yes, sometimes just letting the battery drain and then re-connecting to your computer can help resolve the issue.
Lastly, here is more help regarding a frozen iPod.

My ipod classic just froze on me and will not even reset.  All I'm getting on the display is a read circle with a red x in the middle.  HELP!!!!!!!!!!

If you are unable to get the iPod into Disk Mode to restore it and instead get the red X symbol, it's a very good indication of a damaged hard drive inside of your iPod. This means you'll need to take or send your iPod in for repair or replacement.

Did the battery run out of power?  If not, try doing a Reset to "reboot" the iPod

  • If I trade-in my old iPod nano in-store for the discount, will it apply to something that is already on sale?

I want to trade in my old iPod nano (2nd gen) for the in-store discount, and then buy a new iPod touch. If the Touch is already on sale, will the trade-in discount apply ON TOP of the sale price?

I see no disclaimer on the Apple site that says you can't combine today's sale price with other other discounts. However, you have to ask Apple for sure.

I have reformatted my Nano three times.  I have deleted itunes 3 times.  7th generation will not sync or show up in itunes, but 2nd generation will.  I bought it a little over three months ago: should I use it as a paper weight or throw it against the wall?

The latest version of iTunes may hide the sidebar.  If it is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  With the sidebar visible. when you connect the iPod (to the same USB port used by your other iPod), does it appear in the sidebar, under DEVICES?
If it does not, I would shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices including hub.  Start up with only standard keyboard/mouse connected (if normally used).  Do this to Reset the iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
Run iTunes.  Connect iPod to a direct USB port on computer.
I have reformatted my Nano three times.
If you did that using Windows, the iPod's software has been erased (so it cannot operate as an iPod).  Instead of just doing a Reset before connecting, you may need to put it in Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
If iTunes recognizes the iPod when connected in Disk Mode, it should prompt you to do a Restore so that it can have its software re-installed.

  • My iPod Nano just won't work anymore. Please help if possible.

I have had my iPod Nano for under a year, and this past month it has been going crazy on me like for a week I was unable to turn it off. However, it all of sudden worked fine but two weeks later while I was listening to it, it just turned off on me. Now I cannot open it and I have tried charging it but nothing shows up and it just will not turn on. It is like my iPod has died. Has anyone else gone through this? Thanks for the help.
      Windows XP

    Try these.
    My iPod won't turn on.
    iPod battery doesn't charge.
    My iPod won't wake up.
iPod touch-wheel is unresponsive after waking from sleep.
When restoring the iPod, it's recommended to put it into disk mode first.
    Putting iPod into disk mode.
If none of the above help, then it's probably a service issue.
You can arrange online service here.
    Service request.
Or if an Apple store is near you, take it there and have them check your iPod.
