IPod Nano - LCD Faulty?

Hi,
I purchased an iPod Nano for my finacee for Xmas. She has just called me to say she thinks it has broken.
The iPod is playing music. However, the screen appears to have broken, as all she sees is the backlight come on and dim as it usually would, but nothing is displayed on-screen. She has tried resetting the Nano, but to no avail. Also, she says there is a black "splodge" on the screen.
The Nano was working fine yesterday, and was left overnight on a table in it's case, face-up, so nothing has fallen on it, been dropped on it, or basicaly touched it in any way until my fiancee picked it up this morning and discovered the problem.
I've had it less than a month, so it's still covered by warranty. Is it reasonable for me to expect to be able to take this faulty Nano to an Apple store and exchange it for a working one?

Well, that's an aboslute joke. Despite your sarcastic reply, it would appear that yes, somewhat surprisingly, the LCD screen ahs failed with no form of human intervention.
I flat-out refuse to believe that an LCD screen can fail within a month of the Nano being purchased, without any form of human intervention, and it isn't covered under warranty. As I said, it wasn't dropped, had anything spilled on it, screen prodded, or anything like that, in fact, it's pretty much been treated like the thing was made of glass due to all the reports of how fragile they are.
It's amazing to me that this is not covered by the warranty. Should this go back to the Apple store this evening and Apple NOT give me a replacement, a refund will be expected as this is completely and utterly diabolical.

  • IPod Nano LCD screen cracking/scratching

i am a possible, going to be nano buyer and i was wondering if anyone who is a owner has had problems with the screen cracking and/or scratching. Also this is a question for owners with the problem and APPLE if the screen gets cracked or overally scratched withing warranty will apple replace it with a new one? also for people in singapore is there anywhere that i can get a 4GB nano, as most places have said they dont have them. thank you
      Windows XP

The screen scratching issue is really going to depend on just how badly you treat the device. I don't know how the screens are getting so badly scratched, and in normal use I can't see anything other than normal wear and tear. My 3G iPod is the same - a few scuffs and scratches, but nothing to stop it working.
If on the other hand you place the nano into your pocket without a protective case, keep change and car keys in the same pocket, then yes, it WILL get scratched. If you drop it or drag it over rough surfaces, if you take a sharp implement to it, if you use abrasive cleaners on it... and probably loads of other 'ifs', you'll get scratches on it.
They are not indestructible and the LCD screen is not harder than diamond. Take care of your Nano and you should be fine.
Taking it back with scratches through normal wear and tear, or through poor care, will not get you a replacement. You would have to show that it was an actual fault with the Nano itself, and I get the distinct feeling most are fine
As for purchasing a 4GB model, have you tried the online Apple store?

  • Damaged iPod Nano LCD screen

A while ago i found my Nano with the LCD screen cracked with no damage to the outer part of the nano, only the screen inside was cracked. I called Apple and they said that the damage was physical and that they will not replace it. I also read my 3-year store warrenty and they said that we have to contact apple because they will do nothing for it. This ****** me off because I payed $90 on a 3-year warrenty and the wont do anything for me. I was told to send in my Nano anyways but i dont know what i need to send in with the Nano and where I would be able to find an address.
Any suggestions on how I could get my Nano replaced or what I need to send my iPod with would be very helpful

If possible, I recommend taking it into an Apple store first. This way you can talk directly with a real person.

If you've had it more than 6 months, you will be charged $29.95 for shipping. Less than 6 months, it's free.
Apple will send you a box via DHL or FedEx.
Put your iPod (only-no accesories) in the box, put the return label on the box and call or drop it off with whoever delivedred it.

I changed the lcd and flex cable over on a ipod nano but the new buttons didnt seem to work (power did, volume didnt). i took it out of the body and connected the touchscreen and flex cable to see if there was a kink in the flex . i did try turning it on and then realised it could be abad idea as the earth points wernt connected. anyway, i put it all back in the body and it doenst turn on at all. i did read somewhere it could be the circuit board shutting down and there are ways of waking it up......eg. draining the batt, short curcuit etc......wondering if anyone has any ideas......

  • Faulty on/off switch ipod nano

This is not a question but a comment and an appeal to Apple.  My ipod nano no longer switches on.  I have now encountered this problem three times.  I was able to get a free replacement the first time this happened because the ipod was still under warranty.  The replacement failed soon after and was once again replaced.  This one has lasted much longer but failed this week.  It is very clear that mine is not an isolated experience, judging by the 7 pages of posts by people in a similar predicament as mine.  The problem appears to have been reported frequently since at least 2009.
This ipod has been marketed as suitable for running and yet sweat/water/humidity appears to cause it to malfunction.
Please Apple - address this problem ASAP and improve the design of the nano to make it suitable for runners.
Until you improve the durability of this product, I will start looking elsewhere for a suitable replacement.
    Thanks

  • Apple admits to nano LCD flaw in very small percentage

    iPod flaw 'limited', Apple confirms
    By Jonny Evans
Apple's all-new iPod nano has been in the news lately, receiving rave reviews worldwide on launch and a wave of criticism since recent claims that the iPod nano ships with a faulty screen. This is not the case, an Apple representative said on Tuesday night.
The allegation first surfaced on Flawedmusicplayer.com. The site claimed iPod nano screens become damaged during such commonplace use as being in a user's pocket. Some customers have reported the device to fail within hours of purchase.
In one case a 15 year-old boy told the website: "I pulled my iPod out and my heart dropped. The LCD was half destroyed, but there is no visible scratch or mark on the outside of the iPod."
Apple confirmed the problem exits, saying: "This is a real but minor issue involving a vendor quality problem in a small number of units. Our figures show this issue has affected less than 1/10 of 1 per cent of the total iPod nano units that we've shipped. It is not a design issue."
Affected customers simply need to contact Apple to arrange a free replacement unit.
A second complaint has been that the iPod nano screen gets scratched easily.
Apple moved to scotch such rumours, saying: "A few vocal customers are saying that their iPod nano is more susceptible to scratching than prior iPods. We have received very few calls from customers reporting this problem, and do not believe this is a widespread issue."
The representative confirmed the company to have received "very few" calls claiming such a problem, adding: "The iPod nano is made with the same high-quality polycarbonate plastic as the fourth-generation iPod. We suggest concerned customers use one of the iPod nano cases that are coming to market to protect the music player," the representative told this reporter.

I did call. I clean optics for a living, and after 2 days with my black 4g nano...scratches and swirl marks. I could not have taken better care of the thing, unless I didn't even open the package. The people at apple were nice, and listened to me, and requested my unit be sent in for engineering review. So here is hoping I get a non defective one. The 'official' advice was keep it in a case. I have several tech toys with glossy shiny cases and screens, no trouble at all keeping them in fine shape, and as I make and use polycarb every work day, I KNOW its an order of magnitude more scratch resistant then the nano.

  • IPod nano no longer recognized USB device - after almost 2 perfect years

Okay, so I ran about 5 miles last night using my nike+ipod. The ipod worked flawlessly as usual. When I went to plug it in to my computer, instead of acting normal I got "unrecognized USB device" or something similar. iTunes didn't recognize it either. It was charging however. The ipod still plays music, but without being recognized I won't be able to get any music changed on it.
I already tried a couple of things. I rebooted the computer. I plugged it in to another computer (with same results). I switched the hold switch and then held down the top two buttons for 6 seconds, etc. It turns off and back on fine. It plays music fine. The computer seems to know it's there b/c it charges and respondes "USB device not recognized". It just doesn't recognize it anymore.
Please help! Did I sweat too much on it?
iPod nano 1Gb (1st Gen I think)   Windows Vista

I got my ipod in May for my birthday and its worked pretty fine up until now. I went on holiday for two weeks to France where I went running everyday with my ipod and it worked fine but on the journey home in the car it wouldnt work and froze. Now it wont charge and is unrecognised on my pc and says that there are no drivers installed for this Device when it before worked fine. I have tried everything that has been mentioned on every discussion I could find and it still isn't working. It's driving me crazy! Could any1 help please? All suggestions appreciated.
Out of curiousity could it be a faulty wire?

  • New ipod nano 2nd gen. not loading onto windows or itunes

I just got an ipod nano 2gb 2nd gen. (refurbished from apple). I updated my former version of itunes (my daughter has a 1st gen. nano, so she's been using itunes with her's with no problems..) to the latest version like the quick start guide says. Plugged in the ipod to the usb port on the back of the computer and the setup wizard pops up, asking to install the software for the device. I try letting it auto search, which it finds nothing, and I get a message saying "your new hardware may not work properly.....". I checked the device manager and the ipod is listed under "other devices" with a question mark by it. I checked to make sure my daughters 1st gen. nano works with the updated itunes and it does with no problems. Now what?

I also have a 2nd generation, which I purchased after my ipod Shuffle stopped updating. We plugged it in, followed the instructions but the Nano was not recognised by my PC, however, my nano does get recognised on my husband's pc. My daughters ipod and my old shuffle both are still recognised on my pc. I need to delete the shuffle, as it is faulty, but more importantly, I need to get my pc to recognise the nano. Please help.

  • My ipod nano (6th gen)'s screen don't turned on... when resetting it, the screen turns to white.. the most worst is, it doesn't work out...

I really don't know to fix it... What happen was, when i played my ipod nano, it turns to white... i don't know if I accidentally clicked anything on the screen or the buttons at the side of the device... What i did was, I connected it in my laptap because I was thinking that maybe my ipod was in hang mode. When I was able to connect it, the itunes recognized it but I can't played the music and the screen in my ipod screen was still white... SO, I restored it in factory setting... the same thing happen... i don't know what happen, so I need your help...

You can work through the remaining five 5 R's of troubleshooting.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
It might also be a good idea to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up and restore it once more in iTunes.
Otherwise, it's likely a hardware issue with the iPod's LCD display, meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service either via Apple or a third party repair service. Here is Apple's repair pricing.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Note that they don't actually repair the device, but exchange it for one of the same generation, model, and capacity.  A third party service will actually replace the damage part for a little less.  Google "iPod screen repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.

  • Ipod nano not recognised windows 8

I recently bought a new windows 8 computer in Australia and I have a ipod nano 6th generation and Ipad mini  both from Australia.
At first Itunes would not open untill I ran it as an administrator, now it works but will not recognise any of my devices. I am currently living in Canada and I am unsure if when I have reinstalled itunes it has made the software uncompatible. I think this is highly unlikely but im starting to wonder if anything is possible.
Upon connecting my device it comes up in the devices and hardware tab as faulty I have removed and added it several times reinstalled and restarted. When I open it in Itunes it tells me that I should reinstall itunes because there is an ipod that can not be recognised. I have no idea what to do I've tried everything I can think of and Ive racked my brains.
Is there anyway I can get these apple products to work or are they now useless because I've updated my windows to windows 8.

  • Ipod, nano 4th generation, will not charge using my PC or my dock.  It's 5 years old and has charged using both methods since I got it.

My ipod will not charge when connected to my dock or my computer.  I will play when connected to both.  I have tried both USB ports, checked the connections on my dock (power light is on) and it will just not charge.

    Howdy Crickety22,
Using the USB cord in different locations is a great way to help isolate this kind of issue. Since you have done that, the next step I would recommend is testing a different USB cable with the device.
Check out this info from the article named Archived - iPod's battery doesn't charge found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ta44551
    Faulty cable
If something is wrong with the FireWire or USB cable that came with iPod, it may not supply any power to charge the battery. Note: Only iPod models with a Click Wheel can get power from a high-powered USB port using the supplied cable (includes iPod mini, iPod (Click Wheel), iPod photo, iPod with color display, iPod nano, and Fifth Generation iPod).
Make sure you are using the cable that came with iPod. Some third-party cables may not work properly with iPod.
Make sure nothing is in or blocking your computer's FireWire or USB ports.
Check the connections to make sure the cable is completely plugged in.
Try another known-good FireWire or USB cable if available.
If this resolves the issue your FireWire or USB cable needs to be replaced. You can arrange for replacement at theiPod Service Website.
    And this part as well:
Faulty dock connector or FireWire port on iPod
If something is wrong with iPod's FireWire or Dock Connector port, it may not supply power to iPod.
Make sure nothing is in or blocking iPod's FireWire or Dock Connector port.
Check the connection to make sure the FireWire or Dock Connector cable is completely plugged in.
If this did not resolve the issue iPod needs to be repaired. You can arrange for repair at the iPod Service Website.

  • Ipod nano 6g will not sync OR charge! (not happy)

i bought a ipod nano 6g but 3-4 hours ago and its not syncing. It is not recognized by my comp nor itunes. Not only that it it isnt charging either. I had downloaded the latest version of itunes. I did the diagnostics test and every test passed except for 2 in which both had said "no ipod, iphone, or ipad found". If it helps i also saw something that said no apple mobile device driver found as well, but i dont know or think it has anything to do with the fact that that device is also not charging. I have gone through several self tech support links from apple's support site and itunes links. i may just take it back tommorow. Please assist me and if ur having this same problem. please bump my topic so it gets more attention.

I have the Same problem we always have this with tech in our house! I came to find this problem after using a faulty socket box, I hadn't noticed that while my iPod was charging in my Belkin USB Adaptor that the Red Light on the Adaptor was flashing (Power On and Off) consistently because of the power not getting through to my adaptor, so while reading my tech magazine there was a rather loud 'BANG' so as you do you go and have a look so I pushed my charger in to the socket harder and the light did not come up on my iPod or my Adaptor meaning that something was wrong with the adaptor... So I checked my iPod and it would not switch on or do anything for that matter!
Please help me on this one guys, i'm not usually the one struggling with tech!

  • TS1363 on connecting my ipod nano it is recognised by my computor but not in i.tunes?

For some reason when connecting my ipod nano to my computor, it is recognised by my computor, but not by itunes. I have followed the procedures
under the apple help , troubleshooting etc.which did not resolve the issue. Norton security have investigated the problem which included deleting the program
which made no difference.I can only assume the problem is a faulty ipod ir a problem with I tunes. Any ideas please.

Which procedures or Apple support documents have you already looked at?  It would help us narrow down what other possible solutions/troubleshooting to offer.

  • My ipod nano (2nd generation) will cont connect with windows or itunes, windows says it has had reported errors??? any help? havnt used ipod in over a week and now it wont work with my computer

my ipod nano (2nd generation) wont connect with windows or itunes, i used it last week (charged it through USB) then this week when i connect it (once again through USB) it wont work, it says "windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems" any help? ive made sure my itunes is up to date, done a reboot on my computer and ipod and still nothing..help please

This could either be a conflict with the iPod's docking port, the iPod's USB sync cable, or even the USB port you are plugging the iPod into on your PC.  So the first thing I would try and do is plug the iPod into a different USB port on your PC.  Make sure it's a high powered USB 2.0 port as they provide a higher power throughput than older USB ports or even the ones that are sometimes available on the front of the tower.
It might help to disconnected all other USB devices from the PC (minus the keyboard and mouse) and reboot the PC. Then reconnect the iPod once again.
If still no luck, swap out the cable with another known working cable to rule out the possibility of a damaged or faulty cable.
Lastly, plug the iPod into another PC to see if it's recognized there.  If the same error appears on another machine, it's likely a hardware issue with the Nano meaning you'll want to have it serviced or replaced.
