Ipod Nano - Long wait to be recognized by ITunes

Windows XP Pro - ITunes 7.01 / IPod 1.3 for first generation Nano; high speed cable modem connection; IPod set up as device I:
Case 1) - Turn off Internet: Start ITunes, recognizes IPod immediately
Case 2) - Turn on Internet: Start ITunes, takes more than 2 minutes to recognize the IPod; I see intermittent activity on the Internet connection, with pauses in between
This huge delay is extremely annoying. I have tried many things to try to alleviate the delay (Reinstalled from scratch; changed drive letters, opened Windows firewall, ...) - all to no avail.

The culprit has been identified: the iPod. A full restore eliminates the problem (and my files). I believe the problem is that Apple does not properly take into account the different ways a Windows profile can be set up.
Diagnosis:
On my work machine, part of the Windows user profile (specifically the folders "Application Data", "Desktop", and "Documents") is on a remotely mounted disk (for reasons of convenient backup). Lets call that machine profile_server.work.com. Connecting the iPod at work apparently updates settings files on the iPod, including a pointer to profile_server.work.com. At work the profile is reachable, but is protected from access from the outside world.
At home, plugging in the iPod for iTunes causes it to try to connect to profile_server.work.com. It takes 3 minutes for iTunes to give up trying. During this time, iTunes is completely frozen - it will not redraw the window and one cannot move the window. With the network cable unplugged, iTunes gives up right away and recognizes the iPod immediately.
This is just bad programming practice on the part of Apple. First iTunes should remain responsive when it is waiting for a network connection - it is not using CPU cycles. It should at least respond to window refresh.
Apple should also get with it: a user's profile can be on a remotely mounted disk (accomplished through ProfileXXX environment variables). If the machine that the Profile is on is not reachable, iTunes should gracefully quickly stop trying!
Which also brings up another peave: iTunes is the only program (out of very many) on my Windows machine which does not behave properly with virtual desktops (MSVDM, part of the TweakUI toolset from Microsoft). iTunes remains "on top" of every desktop. Truly annoying, especially when it freezes.
I will try two more experiments:
- connect the iPod at work (with iTunes running on an account with a remote profile) to see if the problem reoccurs when I carry the iPod home. I am guessing the problem will reoccur.
- restore the iPod again if necessary and connect the iPod at work (with iTunes running on an account with a local profile) to see if the problem reoccurs at home. I am guessing that the problem will not reoccur.

  • Ipod nano 1st gen is not recognized in itunes 10

I updated my computer system to leopard 10.5.8 as well as the latest itunes 10. I bought a new ipod nano 6th gen, and it syncs and works fine. The problem I have is my old Ipod. It is detected by my power mac on the desktop only the icon it has is a folder, and when I open it is in blank. I open Itunes 10 and it doesn't appear. And I tried to follow the instructions on apple support, tried all ports, tried reseting the ipod, and it is still not showing up on itunes. Can someone help me with this please?
Also, a white line showed up on the screen, does that mean the screen is broken? I can still see everything going on normally on the ipod but not where the line comes up (middle of the screen).

Then it's time to call Apple tech support while you are still under warranty.  Every iPod comes with complimentary, single-incident telephone technical support within 90 days of your iPod purchase.   If you also purchased AppleCare, then your warranty is extended for technical support and hardware coverage for two years from the original purchase date of your iPod.

  • HT1369 my iPod nano 4th generation is not recognized by iTunes.

I have always used iTunes with this iPod.  I have Christmas music on it and I want some other music.  This is only used for music on the Bose. It worked before Christmas but there has been updates to iTunes since then so don't know if thats the problem.
I have googled it and have tried everything that is mentioned but it still is not recognized.  It shows up as a drive in my computer but on the devices for iTunes it isn't there.

  • Ipod nano not charging or being recognized by windows

    have windows xp pro
cannot get ipod nano to charge or be recognized by windows
left it connected for the past couple hours
had to get a 2.0 usb pci card, other things are connected and working in the new card, its connected directly to the card

Ok go ahead and try and reset the ipod while it is plugged into the card you have for usb 2.0. You reset the ipod by moving the hold switch on top of the ipod a couple of times until it is white. Once you have done that go ahead and hold down the menu and the center select button for 6-10 seconds until you see the apple logo. After you see the apple logo let go of the buttons and see if the ipod is showing up.
Another thing you could try is taking the ipod to another computer and see if it shows up on that computer.
Also remove any other usb devices from the computer except the mouse and the keyboard.
If you still have this problem type in on the support web site msconfig and try that. If none of these steps help you take the ipod to the nearest apple store, or contact technical support and have the ipod sent in for repair.

I cannot get my ipod touch or iphone to be recognized by Itunes on my mac mini. Only when i download itunes each time afresh, will it show up the first time. Then these devices will not be recognized subsequently. Is it because i am not uninstalling itunes before I download it? Surely this is a basic thing, ie that my devices need to recognize each other?

Wow the customer service is even worse. Does Apple want me to go around jailbreaking my iPod now so I can use something that actually recognizes my product?
