IPod nano no longer recognized USB device - after almost 2 perfect years

Okay, so I ran about 5 miles last night using my nike+ipod. The ipod worked flawlessly as usual. When I went to plug it in to my computer, instead of acting normal I got "unrecognized USB device" or something similar. iTunes didn't recognize it either. It was charging however. The ipod still plays music, but without being recognized I won't be able to get any music changed on it.
I already tried a couple of things. I rebooted the computer. I plugged it in to another computer (with same results). I switched the hold switch and then held down the top two buttons for 6 seconds, etc. It turns off and back on fine. It plays music fine. The computer seems to know it's there b/c it charges and respondes "USB device not recognized". It just doesn't recognize it anymore.
Please help! Did I sweat too much on it?
iPod nano 1Gb (1st Gen I think)   Windows Vista

I got my ipod in May for my birthday and its worked pretty fine up until now. I went on holiday for two weeks to France where I went running everyday with my ipod and it worked fine but on the journey home in the car it wouldnt work and froze. Now it wont charge and is unrecognised on my pc and says that there are no drivers installed for this Device when it before worked fine. I have tried everything that has been mentioned on every discussion I could find and it still isn't working. It's driving me crazy! Could any1 help please? All suggestions appreciated.
Out of curiousity could it be a faulty wire?

  • Ipod Nano no longer recognized by Itunes

I have an Ipod Nano that I used with my Toshiba and Itunes. About a month ago, I got an Ipod Touch (lots of fun)and used it with the same Itunes. It worked fine. However, it does not recognize the Nano anymore. It charges but nothing else happens. Any thoughts? The Nano is recognized by other computers.
    Thanks!

I've run into similar problems. I have four iPods (a firewire 3G, a Shuffle, a nano and a 5G) attached to my PC and I've yet to get all of them to show up in iTunes at once, even after restoring and reloading each of them. The Shuffle shows up for a few seconds, then goes away. The Nano, 3G and 5G stick around for a while, but if two of them are connected to the system, one of them (usually the nano or the 3G) vanishes from iTunes when the third is connected.
ITunes won't say so specifically, but you won't be able to successfully restore a device unless it's the only one connected to your system. What's more, if you have more than one iPod connected when you attempt to restore one, there's a good chance you'll screw up your other one instead. No big deal, unless you're on your way out the door and must now wait for 6000 songs to resync, but still a hassle.

  • IPod Nano: Error Message "The USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it"

Hi everyone, I just received 2 brand new iPod Nanos for my kids for Christmas, thought I'd be smart and sync them both now before wrapping them so I don't have to be messing around with them on the day. One synced without a problem, then using the same cable, same computer, same USB port, the 2nd one came up with "The USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it" I've tried restarting my computer, unplugging and reinserting the USB. Is there anthing else I can try before returning it? Thanking you for any help.

I have solved my problem, I ended up ringing Apple and got an awesome lady who told me to reset it by pressing the sleep button and menu button together for about 10 seconds and once it actually turned on for the first time the computer then recognised it, so it's all good, :-) Thank you lovely lady!

  • IPod Nano 5G not recognized as device for itunes.

I recently got an ipod nano 5g, and itunes is refusing to recognize it. It is shown only as a disc on my desktop, and is not shown under devices in itunes. As this ipod still has stock software, it's highly flawed, and I'm hoping the update will add the common sense features I"m wanting. Unfortunately I'm not able to connect so as to update.

    Hello, Pete.
Here is an article I would recommend going through when an iPod is not recognized by iTunes or the computer.
iPod not recognized in My Computer and in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1369
Usually the resolution is updating the Apple Mobile Device Driver.  See the section labeled Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed > For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 > Update the Apple Mobile Device Driver.

  • My old Intel-Based iMac is no longer recognizing USB wired input devices; it only recognizes Bluetooth.  What happened?

My friend's old Intel-Based iMac is no longer recognizing USB-wired input devices (Kensington TrackBall, Logitech Mouse) plugged into any USB slot at the back of the computer.
They were working before and for many years.
All of a sudden, A pop up window came up. IT said no Bluetooth mice could be found.  We don't know what set off that window to pop up and look for a WL mouse. It never has before in the 5 or more years my friend has been using this computer.
I supplied a wireless Apple mouse and his is back running again.
But want to know why his USB-input devices (Except his keyboard) are not being recognized. He would prefer to use his  Trackpad (Wired), but can't find anything in SYstem PReferences to allow that.  The computer only seems to want a Bluetooth input device.
Anyone have an idea what happened and if this can be reversed?
I think he is still running Mac OS X 10.5.8.

    Hi Carol, lets try this...
reset FW bus, same goes for USB reset...
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive/devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • Ipod nano won't recognized via USB2.0 but OK via USB1.1

I am using a Dell PC with windows 2000, with both the USB2.0 and USB1.1 port. My ipod nano can be recognized via firewire and USB1.1, but not USB2.0.
I suspects it is the problem of my USB2.0 card (with Ali chipset), because
1> Ipod is fine because it can connect with another PC with USB2.0.
2> My Ipod driver and Itune software were installed correctly, because it works when connected with USB1.1.
However, the USB2.0 ports worked well with other devices, and it will recognize ipod nano as an unknown USB massive storage device (I set the ipod to disk mood).
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Do a search on this forum. I posted something about ALi USB2 not being certified at http://www.usb.org/ - The person with the problem picked up a Belkin USB2 card and all is fine with his system now. May not be what you want to hear, but that appears to be the fix. You can always got to Dell or ALi for help

My ipod nano is not recognized in itunes on my computer, when it has in the past. How do I fix this problem?

I would think, Twins1995, that if we are having the problem, others are as well. Hopefully, Apple will shortly issue a follow-up software release to fix the problem. Or is that just wishful thinking on my part.
It would be helpful, if there were some kind of work-around in the interim, so we can use our devices. Pretty frustrating when you consider that all of the hardware and software is produced by Apple.

    Hi MartyP680,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It appears that you're receiving a message that your iPod nano can't be identified properly, and you've already tried removing and reinstalling iTunes. You've also isolated this behavior to only one of your PCs.
If the issue persists, there are some additional tips in this article that may help, including verifying that the Apple Mobile Device Support service installed properly and is running:
iPod nano: Error message saying that iPod could not be identified properly - Apple Support
The "Learn More" section also mentions some other potentially conflicting software to look for on your PC.
    Best Regards,

    Hi There,
The title actually says it all..
(My 4th Generation click wheel 40 GB iPod is no longer recognized by iTunes 7.4.2, although the iPod works fine.. iTunes keeps saying to reset it, but I don't see why I should)
The iPod seems to work just fine, so I'm not in a big hurry to erase all my songs audio books etc..
I am thinking that this is a problem with Macintosh iTunes version 7.4.2, from what I'm seeing, but how should I proceed?
    Many thanks for any help.
    Eric

Sounds like a dead battery. Take it into your local Apple store/Genius bar and see if there is anything they can do for you.  Another option is to send it in to a third party repair company who can replace the battery at a pretty low cost.

  • My new ipod nano is not recognized by my itunes and I have tried the trouble shooting tips

my new ipod nano is not recognized by my itunes and I have tried the trouble shooting tips

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62 and Windows 8.1.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.
