IPod nano plays only when connected to PC

My nano is a 3rd, I think. I bought it from Apple's iPod website 2 years ago. I was using the iPod on a Harley-Davison plugged into the iPod connection of a Jenson Marine radio. I had it in a little rubbery protecting case. This pas week I had to ride in the rain. While the iPod was protected from the rain moisture built up inside the case. Now it will play only when connect to the PC.
When it is connected to the PC everything works normal. ITunes does not need to be running, only it needs to be connected via the USB. I plug the speakers directly into the iPod and it work normally. But, when I un plug it, it dies. Not only does it quit playing but none of the keys are active. It is just DEAD. The display remains as it was but not moving. Of course I have reloaded factory defaults and started all over. But it is dead if not connected via USB 04/01/09
port.
Hopefully someone can help. It was a $300 unit. I sure don't want to have to buy another.
thanks,
wayne

It sounds like a battery issue to me. When you connect it to the PC it draws power from the computer and thus it is able to function. Apparently it doesn't have enough of its own juice anymore. You probably just need a new battery.

I've run diagnostics. Can't find device. I've tried resetting. The toggle has been turned on and off.

Cable works fine on my other iPod. Reset by pressing menu and center button together for 6-10 seconds. Left it to charge for many hours. Started acting up while running. Suddenly the music stopped playing but my Nike + was still working for the rest of my run. Took it straight it home and plugged it in to the wall to recharge since the battery was fairly low. Looked like it recharged ok but then screen went blank and now does it not show up on iTunes, does not seem to recharge by the wall charger (apple wall charger plugged into a surge protector in India). I have turned the hold switch off and on many times.
Sounds like a repair issue, which is not easy to do in India :(

  • TS1425 iPod nano - loses functionality when connected to car radio

For the past week, when I connect my iPod nano (4th generation) to a car radio (and I've tried it in several) it brings up a splash screen of the radio manufacturer which stays on the iPod screen and prevents any further access to the iPod functionality. This only happens when connected to a car radio, otherwise the iPod functions normally. So in effect, the iPod is unusable when connected to the car radio, which is where I do most of my listening. Anyone know how to help eliminate this problem?

  • Does the ipod nano charge quickly when connected to a mac?

    hi everyone.
I recently switched from windows to a macbook. i noticed that my ipod nano(second generation) charges quickly when connected to the mac as compared to when i connected it to my pc? is this possible or is there something wrong with my ipod? it is 11 months since i got my nano. kindly help.
    this is my first post
    Thanks in advance

I assume you're talking about using the Apple cable with either component or composite cables. On a non-HD TV, the quality is quite good. I'm not sure what you mean about picture size. It doesn't letter box anything, if that's what you mean. Used to do it a lot when I went away for the weekend. It was an easy way to take iTunes rental movies with me and watch them on a big screen. I've never tried with my HD TV because i haven an Apple TV and there's no need.
    Best of luck.

  • Ipod nano freezes pc when connected

    Hi,
I bought a brand new I pod 2 weeks ago, loaded the current itunes version and after a few hick ups itunes loaded the music on my ipod. Now a few days later my computer totally freezes as soon as I connect the ipod to the pc. I tried everything, setting back the ipod, deinstall and reinstall itunes, even an older version of itunes, tried all available usb ports (all 2.0 versions)...nothing. I also blocked the firewall and the antivirus guard...nothing.
still full stop when connected. itunes recognizes my ipod on the screen but then it stopps. I have to restart the pc to keep on working with it. I also tried other pc's. An apple one worked fine with my ipod, another pc recognized it on the F drive and did not freeze it so I don't think the little beauty itself is the problem.
Any idea to help my restless soul... ;-)???

OK, here I am back again.
My ipod was restored by my friend who used an apple computer with the latest version of itunes 7.....
So I started from scratch, installed an earlier version of itunes (6.0.2 or so), put my music on, connected my ipod (no freezing yet) but it immediatelly asked me to use this ipod with the new version 7.0.2. I then upgraded the existing to 7.0.2 and then...as soon as I connected my ipod it recognized it, told me that it is originally communicating with another bibliothek and asked if I wanted to synchronize or only load the bought items etc...and...
did not load any songs on the ipod and....
Freeeeeeeeezzzzzzeeeee !!!! I could not move any mouse or curser on my pc anymore. What do you mean, should I throw away my computer...it looks like is definetly not the ipod.

i have a 5th gen ipod nano that freezes when playing songs. i can't skip, turn down volume, turn ipod off. it simply screeches as the song is stuck at a specific point. any suggestions?

You have 2 options:  #1 - iPod Repair Tutorials
#2 - take the iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

I just bought a new laptop and my ipod nano will not stay connected to my computer. When I first connect the ipod it starts to sync on my ipod but not on itunes. The ipod is initially connected to my computer, I can see it when I look on devices in my computer. However, when it finishes syncing it is no longer detected to my computer. I cannot transfer any of my songs to my new laptop because of this. I have tried to reinstall itunes, reset my ipod and use a different port. None of these things worked. Any ideas?

  • My ipod nano 3 freezes when i connect it to my pc?

my ipod nano 3 freezes when i connect it to my pc, i have to reset it so it gets recognised. this is abit annoying, so is their anyway to fix this problem ?
    PS:I have ipod nano 4gb G3

I have resolved this problem for me. I initially deleted and reinstalled iTunes and deleted any redundant programs which might have been creating a conflict (I have children who install all kinds of rubbish) Someone else had found a USB program conflict and I think my problem was around a conflict with the USB ports. I removed a printer connection which was (unusually) connected via a port next to the ipod connection and plugged the ipod in via a different port and bingo - all is well.

  • I cannot play music when connect to stereo via 30-pin connector. Help?

Since I first upgraded my iPod Touch 2nd Gen to iOS 4.x, I cannot play music when connect to external speakers via the 30-pin connector. I've tried several different speaker systems, but none work. My iPod freezes after making my song selection and doesn't do anything until after rebooting. Even then, it just goes through the same cycle if I select another song. My iPod is 100% functional until I try to plug it in to an external speaker system.
Keep in mind that it worked up until iOS 3.1.3.

Sounds like iOS 4 broke the compatibility with your accessory, something that sometimes happens with major OS changes. Your only hope is to see if the accessory manufacturer has an update to make it compatible with iOS 4, or downgrade your Touch back to 3.1.3.

  • IPod Nano won't stay connected

I've got a 4GB 1st Gen iPod Nano, and I just can't keep the USB connection when I'm connected to iTunes. I connect one end to the dock connector and the other end to the USB port. For about a second it lights up and I get the Do Not Disconnect icon. Then that disappears and it goes to the main iPod menu. It's only if I take one finger and slightly bend the end connected to the dock connector up that the connection seems to hold. When I do that, I get a steady Do Not Disconnect icon and message and iTunes launches. I have to keep the end connected to the dock connector slightly bent upwards the whole time. If I let go and lay the iPod on my desk it disappears from iTunes. Incidentally, this also happens with my 4th Gen iPod click wheel. However, with both, I can charge it via the dock connector with no issue--it doesn't lose connectivity when I do that, only when connecting to iTunes.
Anyone else having an issue like that?

    Powerbook G4 15" Mac OS X (10.4.3)
    Powerbook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Are you using an USB hub or a laptop? I read that that causes the issue, and checked it myself - afaik, the hubs and some laptops have smaller current in USB sockets, i think that was 100 mA rather than 500 mA (required). So: If you're using a PC and USB hub - connect the iPod to main socket. Using a laptop - bad news for you, i think.

What is dropping I guess is the question? Is it wireless? Is it your WAN connection? You need to identify where the problem is.
To do that you need to try a few things.
    1. If you use wireless then bypass it and use ethernet if that is possible.. even just drag things around so you can test if ethernet fixes it. If so and wireless is in fact the problem.. then you can do a few things.
    2. Wireless issues with the 7.6.4 firmware are common. Did you upgrade about the time the problems started? I am afraid the bad news is, downgrading is not like in the past where it fixed things.. 7.6.4 seems to have some permanent effect on the TC and it is never quite the same again. How this is even possible I have yet to determine.
The usual fix is factory reset.
Set wireless with short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Different name for 5ghz.
Make sure security is WPA Personal  with pure alphanumeric password of 8-20 characters.. unless you are more paranoid.
Fix the wireless channels and test in order. 11, 8, 6, 1
And for 5ghz try the lowest channel, 36 and then a high one, around 150.
    3. No improvement factory reset again.. downgrade to 7.6.1 or even 7.5.2 if it is an older Gen4 .. at 18months it might be old enough.. no harm trying. Factory reset again after the downgrade to see if we can get rid of the memory effect.. then try the above steps again.
No luck.. whatever the upgrade did it did permanently.. no fix is available until Apple pushes out a new firmware to fix what they did in the last one. Buy a different wireless router for now and use the TC in bridge just for TM backups.

  • I lost all my songs in my ipod Nano 6th gen. when attempting to transfer from old lybrary to new. Can I get them back?

I lost all my old library in my ipod Nano 6th gen when trying to understand how to sync to new laptop. Can I get them back?

If they are gone, then your question is answered.
If you synced your ipod to a different computer, then the current content of the ipod would be erased.
You cannot sync the music from the ipod to the computer.  It sync from the comptuer to the ipod.
If the music is gone, then it is gone.
Not sure how you think this didn't help you.
Your music is only where you put it.  If you synced your ipod to another computer, erasing the ipod, then the music is not on the ipod any longer.
Not sure what else you are looking for.

  • 2GB ipod nano will only allow 40 songs and not 500.

My little sisters ipod nano will only allow forty smoething songs to be downloaded on it, but isn't 2GB supposed to get around 500? There is nothing else on it except music so there isn't anything else taking up memory space. And yes I have restored it numerous times. Please help!

Make sure that the Music files are compressed formats if you want to get the m ost out of the cpacity of your iPod. When the iPod is "advertised" as "500 songs" or what have you, it is based on circumstance that the song is an AAC format (.m4a) and I think an average of 4minutes long.
AAC is as small as you can get. Make sure the tracks are in that format, if they are already, then the tracks must be quite long.
