Ipod nano shows icon of folder with exclamation mark on start nd then shuts

i just got a new ipod nano i tried to start it after charging it but it shows me an icon of a folder with an exclamation mark and then shuts off.can nybody pls tell me how to d the entire setup from the start to end please

All i can suggest is that you try and restore it on another computer (maybe a PC) and see if it fixes the problem. I am a service technician and I've done pretty much all the things you've tried on a iPod Video and still had to replace it so it looks like that'll be what you need to do.

    I get a flickering folder with question mark on start up, and i cant get into mac osx.
    I tried the hardware test and it detected no problems. Ive tried to do an install with the disc but no harddisc was detected to install it on.
    I cant believe my harddisc is broken all my work is gone (backing doesnt help with configurations etc)

    I know many of you don't understand english. Basicly what the articel tells us is that there is a problem with the harddrive due to a contruction caused error.

  • Folder with Question Mark on Start-up/ DOS-like screen with errors now...

    Left my Mac Pro running last night, woke up to it being frozen (looked like it was
    in hibernation mode and wouldn't wake up).
    Forced a shut down from button on tower - on start-up, went gray screen
    with blinking folder with question mark.
    Inserted install disc 1 and held down 'C' - Went to choose your lang menu,
    I picked English, went to choose start-up disc. Options were the install
    disc and a network drive with a question mark. I picked drive with
    question mark.
    Computer looked like it was trying to restart, apple with loading circle
    spinning, and then blinked to a black screen that looked like DOS that was
    blinking error messages (one message was "diskOs2 undefined Oxe0030005")
    Any suggestions?

    Was there a storm or outage that could have brought it down? for now it sounds like a kernel panic screen is what you are seeing. If you don't have a UPS, I wouldn't be w/o. Never know when one of those high winds will knock out power.
    You could try to do an SMC Reset and see.
    I assume you usually sleep the system and it doen't have trouble with wake from sleep, and you haven't altered the system (new hardware etc) in any way that would change that.

  • Flashing folder with question mark on start up + many other issues

    About 6 months ago I first encountered the flashing folder with question mark on startup. I fixed the issue myself by unplugging the mouse and keyboard and rebooting. I also did the cmd S fsck -fy before that and all was well.
    The other day I had the flashing folder again...I got it going a couple of times but it happened again. Right now I seem to be in deep trouble. Please read the following:
    1. I booted up from the leopard dvd and no hard drive was there to run a disk utility on
    2. Booted up again from the dvd and hard drive was there. Ran the disk utility and everything was fine...for about 5 minutes. Then the computer froze and I had to hard power down. Rebooted to the flashing folder.
    3. Did command s and fsck but at the end I get the message failed to issue comm reset after 3 attempts.....failing....
    4. I powered down, vacuumed out the vents, sprayed compressed air to make sure it wasn't over heating from dust buildup as I read somewhere.
    5. Booted up...worked for about 5 minutes again.
    6. Now I can't get to the hard drive from the install dvd at all...I tried 100 times. Cmd s won't work at all!! So it looks like I am out of options. Does anyone have ny radical solutions that i can try to fix this. There are some very important things on my hard drive that I would be very upset about loosing.

    Sorry to bear bad news, but most likely the drive is already dead or dying. I hope you backed up everything when the first symptoms appeared.
    There are data recovery services, but might be very expensive.
    EDIT: Some (a few) people have had success putting the drive (sealed very well in a plastic baggy) in the freezer overnight and then quickly putting it in an external enclosure and getting the data off it that way.

    Hi there, I recently got an ipod nano, and it broke after 10 minutes out of the box. So i sent it away to be repaired and it came back and it worked! hooray! So i put some songs on it and tried to play them, but they all just skipped through. After some time fiddling with itunes and the ipod, the ipod basically wouldnt play any songs, i couldn't transfer anything to it or update it. So i tried to restore it, but it came up with "Firmware update falure, Disk write error". I tried the previous ipod updater version but the same message came up. I've tried resetting, restoring and doing everything to my ipod that has been suggested by apple. I have tried putting it in disk mode but that doesn't seem to help. I have reinstalled itunes and the ipod update software. I have the latest updates for my OS and basically I'm at my wits end. I've already had to send this thing away to get repaired once, don't tell me I have to send it away again..... There must be something I can do? Any ideas anyone?

    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
    Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
    Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
    Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
    If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
    You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
    Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
    iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
    The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
    iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
    iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
    You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW".     Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
    I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
    If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

    Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case.   • Boots to folder with exclamation mark or battery with exclamation mark

    recently purchased a used ipod 3g. i came with a dent in the uper left corner of the back of it. im not sure how old it is. it will (without ac pluged in) show the apple logo then turn off, when pluged in it will show either a battery with a exclamation mark,or a folder with an exclamation mark. when connected to windows it is recognized as there being a usb device there but it cannot determine what it is. when connected to a linux box (also have 4g ipod works fine on this box) it will nto even detect it. also when plgged it and booted you can hear the hard drive and it is rather loud. im guessing that the battery is old and dead and will not recharge (as i have seen no sign of it recharging) and the hard drive is dammaged. I have tried reseting, disk mode. both to no results please help for i dont want to pay to have it fixed.

    Yeah, it could be 2 problems i.e. battery and hard disk, but it could be some thing wrong and stop your iPod to get charge. So please plug your iPod have a charge with the AC charger for few hours. (Do a reset before your plug it the charger). Then find a Mac computer, put your iPod in disk mode and connect it with a Mac compter, do a Restore there, if you can able to finish the restore process then connect it back with your PC, and redo the Restore with your PC.

    Why a, I ratting a blinking folder with a question mark at start up.  My MacBook will not open beyond that.  Is it a ram issue?

    That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
    Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
    When it does start up, you'llsee a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
    If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
    If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

    Hi all
    I began downloading updates on a macbook laptop and then cancelled (10.4.1). I then started doing a couple of other things (viewing pdf and safari). When I went to quit these programs the coloured circular processing wheel came on screen for extended period of time. Therefore out of inpatience I turned the lap top off by holding down the power button. Upon restart I got the folder with the question mark. I have read and tried all the available options,
    - Start up from system software CD - Disk utility - Repair - Did not work
    - Safe start - couldnt get it to work
    - Reset PRAM - didnt change anything
    I am considering reinstallation but am worried about losing everything on HD. Do you have any suggestions. Any help would be appreciated.

    It's certainly worth a shot, but I don't think it will work--and you'll want to backup your data just in case.
    How much space is on that other computer? Do you have a FireWire cable?
    If you have a FireWire cable, connect one end to the working Mac and the other to your MacBook. Boot your MacBook while holding down the T key. Your MacBook should load with the FireWire icon on the display--it looks like a Y. On the working machine, your MacBook should appear as an external hard drive called "Macintosh HD" with the FireWire symbol. Best option after this would be to create a folder on the working computer--called "MacBook" perhaps--and move any files you want to save over there. Not sure if there's a way to preserve settings (ie iTunes library information) by copying the folders, but I can try to find out. Copy data from your Users folder.
    The Applications folder may not copy the contents over if you just drag and drop--and if any of those applications were installed with a CD/DVD or other installer, rather than just dragging and dropping, you'll need to reinstall later.

    Hello Mark,
    In fact you should throw it out the window with your window PC. I do not understand why there so many case about this problem and it must have something done with the window PC. I am a firm believer that if the iPod do not connect with a PC and it will work fine.
    From past experience, it could be solved by putting it in Disk Mode and do a format, best is you can find a Mac, and let Mac to format it in FAT32. I did once in PC, just go to format it under the Disk Management, bear in mind you must do several attempts.

  • Blinking folder with question mark at start up

    When i turned on my iMac I was surprised to see a folder icon blinking as it was running fine before this. I didn't delete or install anything.
    My DVD drive does not read properly so i am unable to boot from the installation disk, tried to boot using BootCD from Charles Soft that didnt work either. Even tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM, unplugged keyboard and LAN cable as well but still no luck.
    Read many articles online regarding this issue and it seems that my hard disk must have crashed. I don't have backup of any files.
    Can anyone please help me resolve this issue? I desperately need my data back

    Whew, yes, at the very least it's having trouble with the Data on the Drive.
    Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
    (Space between fsck AND -fy important).
    Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

  • I upgraded to mavericks yesterday and now i have the folder with question mark on start up

    These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
    A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
    Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
    In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
    Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
    Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
    Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.

    Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    Try starting your computer holding down the option key as soon as you hear the startup sound, and continue holding it. Hopefully, you will see the icon for your startup disk come up on your screen within a minute. Click on that icon and press return. If your machine starts up normally from there, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and reselect your startup volume

    Hi! I had the same problem as you. (I had a 2004 emac) all i had to do to boot it up was press enter and that seemed to do the trick but a grey folder might signify your missing files (Computer is broken) or its a network startup. Try it out!

    So today i was using my macbook pro and for some reason my CD/DVD drive was causing noise when i put a DVD inside it, and for some reason it did not recognise my DVD. I force ejected it using the restart and clicking, but after that my computer showed a blinking folder and question mark during start up. I restarted my computer to Recovery HD, but instead it took me to internet Recovery HD (i have mountain lion), and so i went to disk utility to repair my disk, but in the left it did not recognise my hard drive. Please help! Im not that experienced in computing!

    Sounds like some sort of power issue and now your drive is not working.
    You'll have to take this to Apple for repair.
    You should read this if you don't have recent backups of your data off the machine.

  • Ipod nano shows folder with exclamation point. followed instructions....

    ....on the apple support but my Ipod wont work. I just got new speakers for it too.
    It was working fine. But then I plugged it into my computer and it wouldnt charge. and then I disconnected it and It shows me the folder with the exclamation mark. telling me to go to support.
    I tried the hold down the menu button and the select button. but it just showed the folder again.
    Pleaaase please please help me.
