Ipod nano shuts off in the middle of songs

Received a 6th generation ipod nano for Christmas, and it frequently stops playing in the middle of songs and shuts down. Anyone have any ideas? Battery power is not the issue as it has happened with the battery at nearly full charge, and also with it at less than half charge. I can usually turn it back on again, but sometimes it is more difficult. Headphones are fully plugged in so that is not the issue. Is the device defective?

If you are positive the headphones are plugged ALL the way in, meaning the white part of the headphones are flush with the Nano, also check to make sure the headphone jack is clean and clear of debris.
Otherwise, bring it in for service as it may be a hardware malfunction with the headphone jack.

My brand new nano randomly pauses and shuts off in the middle of songs...help!

Same thing happened to mine. Im trying to figure out if its under warranty but i dont remember the date i bought it on. i think its the headphone jack. This seems to be real common. Its supposed to pause when unplugged but mine doesnt. then when the screen goes to sleep it will pause. Real strange. Poor design. I hate the unplug pause feature for this reason. Mine will play if I keep my finger on the screen or keep it plugged into the charger.

  • New iPod Nano Turns off in the middle of any track playing - Apple Bummer

So, I just received my iPod Nano as a replacement to an early generation of iPod Nano's that are subject to recall.  The new Nano has been updated as of 21 Jan 2012.  Songs loaded into iTunes under MAC OS X Lion, iPod Nano synched with my computer, and I'm ready to go.
What - not so fast!  Guess what?  The Nano turns itself off in the middle of any track you play.  I turned the shake and shuffle mode off to make sure that is not it.  And it is fully charged.  I even went through the reset procedures.
So its less than 24 hours new/old so I go for Apple support.  My original iTunes etc accounts are associated with my house in America.  But I live in the UK right now.  So drill through Apple support and guess what?  Well, I live in London so no support is available.  And the Apple web site as usual does not provide much help in making calls.
Apple's web site says there is no coverage on this as it is out of warranty?  24 hours new?  No warranty.  It says it comes with a one year warranty. And Apple UPS'd it to me yesterday.
So question 1 is:  Does anybody know what the problem is and how to fix it?  I hope it isn't operator head space but who knows, maybe it is.
And question 2:  Does anybody have a good 800 number for me to call in the USA?
    Many thanks.

I have the same problem and wondered if it was loosey goosey headphones which were just cheap 10 dollars buds.  So are you saying I should get new ear phones that fit tighter?
That would be my guess....Here is what Apple has to say about the problem.
       http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3700
My guess is that it is a compatibility problem with older or aftermarket ear buds.  My daughter has a 6th generation Nano and does not have this problem but keep in mind she is using the ear buds that came with the 6th Generation Nano.  With the replacement program they are not sending new ear buds.  I just did a test with my daughters 6th Generation Nano using an old set of aftermarket ear buds I had in my desk and I was able to duplicate your issue.  I then used the ear buds from my Iphone 4s and did not have an issue with the Nano going to sleep and the music turning off.

  • IPod keeps shutting off on the middle of movies

I have an iPod touch and everytime I get to certain part of by videos the iPod flickers and then completely shuts off. Its not the video files because they work fine on my iPod video. Any ideas why this is happening?

same problem, i tried to re sync them and it only changed the point at which the video stoped at. then i make an appiontment at the apple store "genius bar" and they told me that the problem was the way i was downloading the videos and that something might have gone wrong with the sync. then he gave me a new one and it had the new apps on it =) but then i synced the videos to my new ipod then happened again >:o so DONT bother going to the apple store to trade it in for a new one it will only happen again. i heard if you sync the videos with windows XP it will work fine!

I see that your notebook is not detecting the hard drive. Start by doing a Hard Reset to see if it detects the hard drive. You can try accessing your BIOS to see if it still sees the hard drive there. How long have you had the notebook for?

  • My Ipod Nano shuts off after awhile during use? Is this a defect or is this something correctable with the sleep/wake button? I want it to play continuously while I use it, not continually shut down?

My Ipod nano shuts down continuously during use? Is this a problem/defect or can this be corrected with the sleep/wake button? While working out the unit goes black and the music stops?

You don't have the headset jack plugged all the way in. Make sure the plastic on the headset jack is flush with the body of the Nano.

  • 7th Gen iPod Nano shuts off randomly

My iPod Nano is just about my favourite piece of hardware that I've ever bought from apple. I'm primarily a pc user when it comes to computers, and having a basic, small iPod means I can listen to music and podcasts and leave the more complicated tasks to the equipment that I've spent more money on. However, my iPod recently started bugging out in a way that makes it nearly unuseable.
The iPod will quite happily run for a day or so if I don't use the touch screen. This is fine for podcasts as I can use the volume and play-pause on the outside. However, if I want to make a choice on the screen, about one in five touches will cause the iPod to shut off. If I reset it, it will either flash the apple logo and shut off again, or get to the homescreen with the loading symbol, then make three short beeps and shut off again. General internet searches have proved fruitless, and although the iPod is cheap enough that I can buy a new one without it being too much of an issue, I would much prefer to keep that money for other things.
Although apple hardware isn't my area of expertise, I believe that there may be some kind of issue with the battery, as there have been black-outs and brown-outs in my area and my iPod has ben charging during a couple of these. I was thinking that the RAM could also be in bad shape for some reason, but I did a dram test, which it passed. The iPod is currently in diagnostic mode, so I can give information on the battery and the like if that would help, but I have no idea what the numbers mean personally.
My warranty ran out a few weeks ago and I live about two hours from the nearest Genius store, so bringing it back isn't really an option. Any help would be much appreciated.

Well the bug appears to have been fixed by the 1.0.3 patch. My battery is still stuffed so I will have to buy a new one at one point, but at least this issue is sorted out.

  • HT1339 After I disconnect from my PC, my iPod nano shuts off and won't come back on?  How do I fix this?

When I disconnect from my PC, my nano shuts off and won't come back on.  I have tried holding down both the On/Off and the Home buttons -- but nothing...

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IPod shuts down in the middle of songs

I am on my second iPod touch due to this problem and I'm getting very frustrated.
I can either be on the internet, listening to a song, or scrolling through albums and the iPod will freeze for a second and go back to the main screen. This has been starting to happen a lot lately. For instance, on my half hour drive home from work it shut off 5 times in the middle of songs when I am not even touching it.
The battery is charged and I have the latest software on it.
    Please help me...

+1. This happens occasionally for me. Been going on for a while both on iPhone 3G and 4.

  • IPod Nano shuts off even after hold switch engaged...HELP!

I have a new iPOD Nano. When I run, I engage the hold switch. Even when I do that, over half the time, the iPOD still shuts off on its own after < 1 minute. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.<br>

Thanks. How do I know if its on sleep? Then, how do I turn that off? Thanks again for any help you can provide.

  • Why does my iPod nano shut off randomly? I just bought it. After about a minute of music, it shuts off.

I just bought my wife an iPod nano. Went through the set up and then updated the iPod through iTunes. Now, after about a minute of music (with two different sets of headphones) it simply shuts off. As if it's in power convseration mode. But I can't find a setting to prevent this. Very frustrating for having JUST bought this.

If you have not already, do a Reset following this procedure.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
A Reset just restarts the iPod.  It is not erased.
If that does not help, the most likely fix for your problem would be a Restore.  This WILL erase the iPod, re-install its softare, and set it to default settings.  To do it, select the iPod in the iTune sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  The button for doing a Restore is there.
For anything that is currently on your computer (such as songs and pictures) that were synced to the iPod, you can just re-sync them.  That should not take too long, even if you do it manually (without using automatic syncing).
For anything that is only on the iPod (not on your computer), they will be lost if you do a Restore.  But that was a known risk.  After all, your iPod could be lost or stolen (or seriously damaged), and those items would be lost.
If those items are songs you purchased from the iTunes Store, you can re-download them (at no cost) on the iTunes Store Purchased screen.
or even be recognized by my computer when it is like this. It just sits there.
If you are having a problem getting the iPod to be recognized by iTunes, which is necessary to do a Restore, try this...  Set the iPod to Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
Then, see if iTunes will recognize it when connected.  Also, if it is recognized more reliably in Disk Mode, before doing a Restore, you can try using a third-party method or utility to transfer song files off the iPod to your computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.

  • My brand new 6th gen ipod nano shuts off for no reason.  the headphone is all the way plugged in.  has done it since i bought it a week ago...any suggestions?

Plays part of a song, shuts off.  Doesn't matter if it is plugged fully into a jack or docked onto a radio.  Anything I find online shows that this is common for this ipod..should I return it and get something that actually works?

...should I return it and get something that actually works?
    Yes.
    It's not normal.

  • Can't re-download any purchased apps//app store constantly shuts off in the middle of searches.

After iOS 6 update--cant redownload any previously purchased apps from app store. App store constantly shuts off when in the middle of searches.

It happens to me almost every time but if you hold the power/sleep button and the home button for about 10 seconds to do a hard reset it usually works for me. I have an iPod touch 4G with ios6.

  • My 7th Generation iPod Nano shuts off whenever I press a button.

I bought my iPod nano 16 GB a few months ago, and I noticed that sometimes, when I tried to open the screen (pressing the top button or the menu button) instead of opening, the iPod shut itself completely, and then rebooted, I could see the Apple logo on white screen, etc.
I went to exchange it once, after I finally managed to find the time, and then, when I tried the new one, it had exactly the same problem, but twice as worse.
Now when I try to choose a song, open the screen, wander in my playlists or even when the song ends and tries to load the next one, it reboots, and at the same time, it generally resets the general settings (brightness, wallpaper, time zone, etc.)
Now, I don't know exactly what is wrong with those 2 iPods, but it is very frustrating, and discouraging. I can't even manage to choose a song before it reboots and I have to try again, after what it generally crashes again. I'd say it does 75% of the time I touch it.
I am using a windows 7 64-bit laptop, incase that helps, but apart from going back to the store and getting a 3rd one that, hopefully works properly this time around, which I could barely find time to, since I live far as **** from the closest applestore here, I don't see what I could possibly have done wrong.
Also, I never dropped it, or even scratched its screen, I never had any problems while synchronizing it and I never bullied it either.
