IPod Nano sync/erase with new Mac

I recently lost a hard drive after 18 months (read the cynicism in my tone.) Luckily, I had the Apple Care program and the drive was replaced. I sent out the damaged disc for data retrieval and the company got most of my info back including the iTunes data. I copied the old data onto the new hard drive. When attempting to sync my iPod with the new disc, the message asked if I wanted to delete the iPod data. I tried to manage around this obstacle several times but finally gave up and said, "sure, erase it," thinking the iTunes account info would transfer back to the clean iPod. No such luck. Now I have 49 purchased books that won't transfer to the iPod because it recognizes this as a new device. Help!

With all the media (apps, music and other synced items) on the new computer, connect the iPad to the computer and make a backup by right clciking on the iPad under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up. The restore from that backup
Note that the backup that iTunes make does not included synced item like apps and music.

  • Sync iPad with new mac in without old mac

Have moved to another city than my home, left iMac at home (old without intel so no cloud) -- bought new iMac and want to sync my ipad now to the new mac NOT the old.  It wants to erase my ipad --- don't want to lose my aps.  How do I stop the sync with old mac and switch to new -- won't be back in old house til mid-Feb so want to sync now with new.  As iMacs are different version and in different cities I couldn't just write my files from one to another so transferred via external drive my music and photos.  Now want to ensure I can sync my iPad.  Advice on how I do this without losing all my aps?  Thx.

Read this discussion and see my posts (Demo) and King Penguin's posts. If you follow the instructions that we discussed you should be fine. There are ways to get all of iPad content into iTunes on the new Mac discussed in this thread.

Whatever does not apply - just ignore. The only change in terminology for a Mac running iTunes is iTunes>Preferences>Devices - not Edit>Preferences>Devices like on a PC.

  • Ipod synced with old pc now dead, can I keep data while syncing it with new Mac?

I have an old iPod with 8 gb music on it. It was previously synced with a PC whose HD is now dead, so the iPod is the only place where the data is still available. The iPod was not attached to an Apple ID back then. Can I attach it now to my Apple ID, synch it with my new Mac Book and still keep the data on it?
    Thank you in advance

    Yes you can

  • How to sync iPhone with new Mac without losing all my iTunes?

I have recently got a new MacBook after my old one crashed... but I have been told that anything not bought would be lost when I sync my iPhone with my new Mac... I have already transferred the bought songs etc... is there a way (cheap or free if possible!) to transfer my music and videos to my iTunes library on my Mac?
    Thank you very much!

    Hi,
    Option 1:
If you have purchased a new Mac from an Local Apple store, I'd advise you to bring in your old computer along with your new one in, and have them assist you on transferring. (Assuming your computer doesn't not even power up)
    Option 2:
If your computer can be powered up (seeing the Apple Logo), and your hard drive is fine, then you can connect the two computers by using a Firewire cable, and then transfer the music files by drag and drop.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
    Option 3:
There are 3rd party software that you may purchase used to extract music from your iPhone, but it will have to be done at your own risk.  You may Google for extracting music from iPhone for a start.

  • Upgrading from old Mac to new- how to sync iPhone with new Mac?

    Hi all,
My dad is upgrading from an old iBook to a nice new iMac. He has spent quite a few days tweaking his new iMac and importing old files and folders. The one thing we haven't yet done, though, is iTunes. He has an iBook G3 that he syncs his iPhone with, and he wants to be able to "move" his whole iTunes setup to the new iMac so that it picks up right where the iBook left off, without needing to reset the iPhone.
One thing to keep in mind is that the iBook had a tiny hard drive and thus the music files are actually on an external hard drive. I was wondering how to go about this feat. I read that using Migration Assistant deletes everything off the new Mac, so that's not an option at this point. Thanks for the help!

If you had use Migration Assistant to start with it would have been easier.

  • Sync iDevices with new Mac?

I have upgraded to a new iMac. The old iMac is still in service, used by another family member. I used Setup Assistant to transfer my account, iTunes library, etc. to the new computer.
I have an iPhone 4 and an iPad1, both running iOS 5.0.1. Both were set to sync wirelessly to the old iMac.
Wi-Fi Sync on the devices looks for the original iMac.
Because the profile, backups, etc should be on both iMacs at this point, can I just plug the devices in to the new iMac and sync without any need to erase or reset the devices? I'd really like to avoid the whole setting up as a new device if I can avoid it.
Is there anything I need to do to switch the device's allegiance to the new iMac? anything I need to do on the old iMac to turn off the sync connection, either before or after syncing with the new iMac?

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your iDevices. Only if you back up manually before syncing, you can restore your devices from those backups again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your device without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPhone for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • How do I transfer music from my iPod nano 4 to my new mac when my old one is broken

Well, I have an iPod nano 4 and a MacBook Pro (2009 or whatever) with iTunes 11 and my old hard drive broke in it and I lost all my music. I did not have a backup but I realised I still had it all on my nano. I need to transfer it all to my computer without re-downloading all the music but I don't know how. I'm able to open up the iPod in iTunes and look at the music on it, play it and even copy it (when it's connected) but I can't paste it or drag it anywhere. Please will someone help me.

iTunes will alow you to transfer your itunes purchases (plug in iPod, right click on device in itunes, select transfer purchases). For the rest of your music, try this: http://www.transferpod.com/

  • Using my Ipod Nano (4th generation) with my mac AND my work PC

    Hi,
I have previously had a 30gb ipod video and have been able to use it primarily on my mac (for downloading) and have been able to go to work and plug it in and also run it through itunes on my work PC. I recently got the nano 4th generation and have not been able to run it on my work PC. (Im only able to work it on my MAC.) My work pc itunes says something like "this is a mac formatted ipod...please restore your ipod to run with a pc".
Is there a way I can run it on both?

Windows is stupid. It can't understand the mac formatted ipod. Restore the ipod on your windows box and format it for PC. The mac will be able to read the PC ipod just fine after that.

  • Using a Windows formatted iPod Nano (4th Gen) with Bootcamp on a Mac(Win XP

Hey I was wondering if anyone knows if you can use a previously formatted iPod Nano (4th Gen) with a Mac that has XP Bootcamped on to it. If the Nano is placed in manually manage music with the original computer it was formatted with, will it be able to accept music, movies, podcasts, etc from the windows on the Mac or will they still be incompatible?

Well, I have 4 internal drive bays filled already, is there room somewhere for 5th one in the box? I wasn't aware of it if there is?? My mac is MacPro3,1, early 2008.
That macsales.com link is interesting but I'm not in the US (I'm in Croatia), and all those brands are supidly expensive here, that $80 esata docking station is almost $200 here... bahh. For that price I may as well buy a whole new 3TB external disk, I want to dock the old one to save money.
I've browsed around and I've found Icy Box docks, which have much more reasonable prices:
    BOX IB-110StUS2-B
    ICY BOX IB-111StUS2-Wh
    ICY BOX IB-115StUS2HC
They all claim to have OSX support... anyone have any experience with them?

  • How do i move ipod nano content to a new Windows computer?  My old computer died and when i try to sync to itunes on my new Windows computer, it says it will erase what's on the ipod.  I can't seem to de-authorize the old computer (it's been recycled).

Hi, I'm an ipod newbie, and unsure of what product i have-i believe it's an ipod nano, but can't seem to find any info on itunes that will identify my product.
how do i move ipod nano music to a new Windows 7 computer?  My old computer died and when i try to sync to itunes on my new Windows computer, it says it will erase what's on the ipod.  I can't seem to de-authorize the old computer (it's been recycled).  Does this mean I have to start all over and read in my CD's into itunes?  seems very inflexible/inelegant...
thanks for your help, sorry if this question has already been answered before!

  • Deleted songs on my iPod by sync with new Mac - ups! Can I sync with iPad to get all song back?

deleted songs on my iPod when sync with new Mac - ups! However all songs are still on my iPad library. Can I sync with iPad to get all song back?

You can use the transfer purchases feature to put the songs back into iTunes from the iPad - as long as the songs were purchased from iTunes.
Connect the iPad, launch iTunes and then right click on the iPad name under devices and select Transfer Purchases. But ..... Before you do that - turn off auto sync first.
Launch iTunes and the go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices>Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing Automatically. Check the box at the bottom that says that. Then click OK. Then you can connect the iPad to the new Mac to transfer the purchases.
This will only work for music purchased from iTunes. If you have music ripped from CD's, you will need a third party app - like TouchCopy.
You can also download the songs again in iTunes as long as you use the same Apple ID. But read this about downloading past purchases as there are some restrictions based on where you live.

  • I have tried everything to get my new ipod nano to work with Windows 8.  Do I need to install new drivers or what?

Got a ipod nano for Christmas.  Installed already bought tunes on it with my computer at the time which was running Vista OS. Had to buy a new computer in March with Windows 8.  Did not buy any songs until April 29th or so...but they will not show in my ipod nano.  Talked with a tech and he got my songs into the new computer.  However, after we hung up, I tried to download the 2 new songs into my ipod and it would not do it.  I noticed that the "cloud" icon was not by any of the songs - only the word: downloaded.  I am thinking that since this is a 64 bit computer that I need to do something else, but don't know what.  Can you help me?  Thank you
    Judy1942

So you have tried a different USB sync cable and as well as plugging it into all the USB ports on your system?  Did you try removing all other USB peripherals (excluding keyboard and mouse if necessary) to see if that did any good?
What happens if you connect it to another PC or Mac?
