IPod nano turned into a vegetable

So, the story is quite simple - I've been a complete idiot. I have accidentally formatted my iPod nano (on a PC running Windows), and now, it does not show up in iTunes. It appears in the Finder (I'm running a mac now) as a removable drive. An empty one. Is there anything that I can possibly do?
I've tried restarting it (holding down the center and the menu keys at the same time), did not work.

This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.
Did you try everything above, including trying on another computer? If so then

  • IPod Nano turns itself on, and won't stay off

    Hi, everybody!
I've had my iPod Nano for about two years now, and have noticed this problem occasionally, but it usually goes away and it has never been this bad.
Here is one scenario: I turn my iPod off by holding the play button. The screen fades to black. I move to set my iPod down, and it immediately lights up again. I press and hold the play button, but instead of turning off, the iPod begins to play music. I pause the song and press and hold again. The iPod fades to black, but again lights up the minute I move my hand.
Here is another scenario: the iPod has been off for several hours. Suddenly, it lights itself up. I pick it up and turn it off, but it again continues to light up as it sits on the desk.
This, of course, runs down the battery--I've had to charge my iPod every day for the past few days because it kills itself, waking up over and over when I'm not around to turn it off again. I'm used to only needing to charge it every few days.
I've tried setting the hold switch once I do get it to sleep, but all that means is that I then have to take it out of hold again a few seconds later to turn it off when it lights itself up. I've restarted over and over, but it keeps happening. I've also recently restored it, with no results. I don't have any alarms set, and there is nothing on my iPod but music and album artwork--no calendar, etc.
It seems to do this most when I am moving around the room. I'm wondering if, somehow, it has become hyper-sensitive and is waking up because it thinks it's being touched? (That sounds so creepy.) It also wakes up instantly if I touch the USB port on the bottom. But of course it also must do this when I'm not around, because often I'll come into the room to find the battery 50% lower than it was when I left. (And I'm the only one who uses my iPod.)
As I said, this has happened before over the two years of its life, but over the past three days or so, it has become nearly constant. I haven't dropped the iPod, it hasn't gotten wet, I haven't done anything unusual with it, so I am at a loss to explain the sudden recurrence of the issue.
I'd appreciate any kind of help!

  • New iPod Nano Turns off in the middle of any track playing - Apple Bummer

So, I just received my iPod Nano as a replacement to an early generation of iPod Nano's that are subject to recall.  The new Nano has been updated as of 21 Jan 2012.  Songs loaded into iTunes under MAC OS X Lion, iPod Nano synched with my computer, and I'm ready to go.
What - not so fast!  Guess what?  The Nano turns itself off in the middle of any track you play.  I turned the shake and shuffle mode off to make sure that is not it.  And it is fully charged.  I even went through the reset procedures.
So its less than 24 hours new/old so I go for Apple support.  My original iTunes etc accounts are associated with my house in America.  But I live in the UK right now.  So drill through Apple support and guess what?  Well, I live in London so no support is available.  And the Apple web site as usual does not provide much help in making calls.
Apple's web site says there is no coverage on this as it is out of warranty?  24 hours new?  No warranty.  It says it comes with a one year warranty. And Apple UPS'd it to me yesterday.
So question 1 is:  Does anybody know what the problem is and how to fix it?  I hope it isn't operator head space but who knows, maybe it is.
And question 2:  Does anybody have a good 800 number for me to call in the USA?
    Many thanks.

I have the same problem and wondered if it was loosey goosey headphones which were just cheap 10 dollars buds.  So are you saying I should get new ear phones that fit tighter?
That would be my guess....Here is what Apple has to say about the problem.
       http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3700
My guess is that it is a compatibility problem with older or aftermarket ear buds.  My daughter has a 6th generation Nano and does not have this problem but keep in mind she is using the ear buds that came with the 6th Generation Nano.  With the replacement program they are not sending new ear buds.  I just did a test with my daughters 6th Generation Nano using an old set of aftermarket ear buds I had in my desk and I was able to duplicate your issue.  I then used the ear buds from my Iphone 4s and did not have an issue with the Nano going to sleep and the music turning off.

  • Turning off ipod nano, turning off ipod nano

Always find the most obvious functions conveniently left out by the Apple engineers including how to turn off the ipod Nano.
Ironically it is always resources 'outside' Apple that usually has the answers..
There is so little information available on it, and many theories including the fact that it is still a 'bug'?
    Please enlighten me.
Very disappointed at your poor user interface and repeated signing into the same user name/ account.. just to write this bit of info..

I might have had the same problem as you are having. First of all it seems that the nano takes a longer time to turn off than previous ipods. Try holding it down for a long long time. If that doesn't work then there might be a manufacturing problem with the button. When I tried to turn mine off it would go off for half a second and then turn back on. Right now I'm in the process of replacing my nano with Apple.

  • Ipod nano fell into pool

Help! I dropped my ipod nano for about 15 seconds into my pool. Turned it off, set it upright on a paper towel to draw water out. Waited about 10 minuted and tried to turn on again, but it wouldnt. Should I have waited longer? Some say try to remove cover and dry, dont know about that. Some say dry in low setting in oven, dont know about that either. Should I just give it more time?
    Thanks, Jeannean

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Sorry to hear of your woes. I don't think rushing this in an oven is a good idea.
Personally I'd leave it several days in a warm place to dry it out thoroughly and then try it again.

First, try updating the iPod software. Follow the steps in this article:

If the problem persists, you may have to restore your iPod:

  • Ipod Nano Turns off/on on its own

    hey guys.
My ipod nano works like a champ, but all of a sudden it has started turning on all on its own. It also wont charge when its hooked up to the alarm clock/dock.
    weird.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help!

Make sure the battery is charged.
When the iPod shuts itself off, try "resetting" ..
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • My iPod nano turns off by itself

i just got myself the iPod nano 6th generation and i kind of like it. I like the fact that it has the fitness part on it. But i don´t like that my iPod turns itself off when i try to count my steps! i turn it on in the morning so that i could count my steps and run and do stuff. Now i have had that problem for like a week- i have to check my pedometer every little while to make sure it is still on, because as soon as it turns off, my steps are automatically stopped.
someone, please let me know what might be wrong with the iPod? i got it by switching it (had the defected 1st generation iPod before) in January and now i have these problems
    Thanx!

you know how there are three buttons on top of the iPod- two for volume and one to make your iPod sleep or wake or turn off. if you would like to listen to music while running and so that you wouldn't touch the screen by accident, you have to push the button once. and when you want the screen to pop on again, all you have to do is press the button again. it should work so that if you turn the music on and step-counter on and then put it on "fade-mode", all your actions should stay working. and as soon as you press the button again, everything should appean on-screen.
what i was trying to say before was that my iPod turn compleately off when i would like to run or listen to music and so i lose all the data

  • Does the new ipod nano fit into the apple docking station the same as the former ipod nano?

I have an apple docking station and I know that the ipod nano is thinner but other than eprhaps being a little wobbly does it fit into the same socket as the original ipod nano?
    Thanks

You need the lightning-to-30-pin adapter. Get it from an apple store.

  • My iPod playlist turned into my entire library.

Ok. I have an iPod nano. When I plug it in to the computer, it automatically opens up iTunes and downloads all the songs from the playlist "iPod Nano" to the iPod. However, I must of accidentally dragged the library into that playlist. So, now instead of having 92 songs in the playlist, there are now 201 songs. However, I know that songs numbers 1-92 are the ones in my iPod. But I can't seem to select all the other songs at the same time. How do I select songs numbers 93-201 and clear them all at the same time without removing #s 1-92?

Select song #92 press and hold shift and select the song at the end of the list. Now press delete.
    Does that work for you?
    Sara.

  • My iPod Classic turned into an iPod Generation 1!

I do NOT know how this happened. You may not belive it,a nd that's fine, but when I plugged my iPod Classic (or iPod 6th Generation) into my computer, the screen turned black and white, lost almost all of it's brightness, and changed the screen to the Generation 1 icon. And when I disconnected it, it never went away from the "OK to Disconnect" screen. The only way tofix it was to let it run out of batteries! How and why did this happen? Has this ever happened in the history of Apple? Did ANYONE know that the Gen 1 firmware was still buried in there?

OOps... Just tried to listen to some tracks and most of them will not play, yet they play and are listed in itunes,... How do I get these tracks onto my ipod?? Any help would be greatly appreciated !!

  • IPod nano turns off like normal, but cuts the song?

I have a new, cute little iPod Nano, sixth generation. I love listening to it, but when it does that automatic time-out thing and goes black, it cuts my music, too. My mom's iPhone doesn't do that. Is there something I can do to stop that from happening? I love the thing to bits, but it's annoying to turn it back on five and six times a song...

    Quenn,
It sounds like your headphones/earbuds aren't plugged in all the way.  Double check the connection.  You shouldn't be able to see any of the silver metal showing.

How to turn off my iPod nano without using play/pause?

That IS how you turn it off; the only other way, is to let it sit for a while, and it will turn off automatically, if it's not playing any music.
