Ipod nano will not appear in itunes or windows, but my 30gb does

My wife has a 30gb ipod and that connects to itunes without any problems. I have a ipod nano (4th gen) and I cannot get it to be recognized by itunes or in windows. I have reset it, but it still does not come up to sync up. What should I do here?

What version of iTunes is on your computer?

Doublechecking. Have you also tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

  • IPod Touch will NOT sync in iTunes for Windows Vista

I get this error message. "iTunes requires a newer version of Apple Mobile Device Support. Please uninstall both Apple Mobile Device Support and iTunes, then install iTunes again."
Well, I did that, then I reinstalled iTunes. The AMDS didn't reinstall with the iTunes software! Instead, it kept rolling back again and again. I uninstalled iTunes again, made sure everything was deleted with Windows Install Clean Up, then tried to install iTunes 8.1. Well, this installed AMDS, but it also installed iTunes 8.2 instead - and I am getting the same error message again. Is my iPod touch completely useless now? I can't update the songs on my computer to it, so what am I supposed to do? My computer is recognizing it and saying it connected and allowing me to open it, but it will not appear in iTunes. HELP!

IS NO ONE FROM APPLE WILLING TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE? This problem is being discussed all over the internet. Something is WRONG with iTunes 8.2 that is PROHIBITING iPod Touch devices to sync with it. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? I have been unable to contact ANYONE about the issue, and a support person literally hung up on me while I was explaining my problem, like he knew what was happening. WHAT DO I DO? I have a non-updated iPod Touch that is just being WASTED because I can't sync it with the newest version of iTunes. APPLE, YOU NEED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.

  • My iPod mini is not appearing in iTunes or windows explorer.

My iPod is not appearing in iTunes or explorer. Only when I go to hardware manager windows admits that there is something that is not installed properly. But when I start the hardware manager and put in the CD, as required by the hardware assistant it says: Hardware couldn’t be installed.
So it is not even possible to reset my iPod, because is not recognized by the iPod Updater. I had to go to another computer to reset the iPod. After that my computer is still not recognizing it. So I installed the latest version of iTunes and Updater, but it doesn’t help. I installed also the latest drivers for my computer, but it did not work. Running the iPod in disc mode doesn’t change anything, too.
The iPod is not listed under disc management so I can’t change the Drive from E to G.
I tried the inactivation of all Microsoft-services according to the protocol from the apple web page, but it did not work, even after installing the latest version of iTunes.
I've read the entire troubleshooting pages on how to fix it.
The message on the iPod mini display is always the same when I connect it: “do not disconnect” and after about 3 seconds “OK to disconnect”. But the iPod is never listed in windows explorer or iTunes. I also reseted it, when it was connected to the computer.
I completely run out ideas and I am about to send it to service.
    Can anyone help?
I use Windows XP on a Fujitsu Siemens 1437G laptop computer.

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.

  • New IPOD Nano will not sync.  iTunes recognizes it, I think.  It knows its there and says I can transfer purchases from it but it will not let me sync it to my existing itunes.

I received a new IPOD nano for CHristmas.  Itunes shows it there on summary, it is showing with the eject symbol.
However, when I go to file/sync, it allows me to transfer purchases but not sync it.  It also does not show up in my playlist like my older NANO does.
I have reset, I have toggled security on and off.  I am current on the software on both my IPOD and ITunes.

I was having the same problem...plugged in my new device and although I was able to set it up and it was recognized in iTunes, hit the sync button and nothing...even when it said it was syncing, still nothing. I am not sure this will work for you but I did two things that were suggested in this forum in combination with one another.
First, I plugged my Nano into different USB port on my laptop from the one I was using. when I reconnected, my devie again was displayed in the top right corner. I clicked on it and the summary page appeared. The one thing I hadn't done is go to the "music" tab. When I arrived there I found that the "sync music" tab was unchecked for some reason. I checked the block and instantly the download started.
As I said, I don't know if you have tried this or if it will even work for you but after an hour of frustration...I felt a little silly that it was something so simple I had negelected and thought I would share.
    Good  luck!

  • 7th Generation iPod Nano will not connect to iTunes after iTunes 11.1.4.62 update

I updated iTunes to the 11.1.4.62 version last night. Now, when I connect my iPod Nano 7th gen device, iTunes gives me a message stating that an iPod has been connected but could not be indentifed properly, try reconnecting, unistall then reinstall iTunes, blah blah. Tried all that and none of it works. iPod worked fine on this computer on iTunes until this update. Windows 8.1 system.

  • Home video on ipod nano will not download to itunes

I took several home videos on my ipod nano under "video camera" and when I try to sync to itunes, they are not showing up. I have an older ipod nano ((the tall one, not the  newer version.)) Any suggestions to get these videos downloaded to my computer??? I have a project for school and need them desperately....
    Thanks!!!!!

    Hello Ben
My suggestion would be to try and put the iPod Nano into Disk Mode and then go forward with the restoring the iPod Nano. This should make the iPod Nano be recognized in iTunes.

  • IPhone  will not appear in iTunes on Windows 7 (64) no matter what I do.

Ok, so I recently updated my PC to Windows 7 (64), and set everything up again using Windows Easy Transfer. Originally iTunes installed using the version which the Apple Downloader picked up and was working reasonably okay. However, whilst I was playing around with the PC, I noticed that iTunes was installed in "Program Files (x86)". So i figured it must've installed the 32 bit version of iTunes on the PC instead, so off I went and uninstalled and installed the 64 bit version from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1047
During that installation, I noticed it too installs to the x86 directory so I ignored it. However, this is where the fun started. At first I noticed that as soon as I plugged in my iPhone 4, iTunes would freeze up, effectively going into a "Not Responding" mode. This would rectify however immediately after unplugging the iPhone.
So after a few attempts and getting the same result, I started searching the web for a solution. After which I tried the following: Deleting the USB drivers and attempted re-install. Drivers were deleted successfully, however once clicking on "Check for hardware changes" the Apple Device never again showed up. I then opened iTunes again, plugged in the iPhone again, and now noticed that iTunes no longer froze, however the iPhone did not appear. From this point, here is a list of all the things I have done, from both folowing the support (http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/itunes/) and other people's advice:
    - Tried a different USB port.
    - Uninstalled all Apple drivers.
    - Uninstalled all Apple Software, including Apple Mobile Device, Apple
    Automatic Update & Quicktime.
    - Searched the registry and removed all references for iTunes.
    - Deleted all iTunes folders from the computer.
    - Deleted AppData temporary folder from my profile.
    - Turned off and restarted the iPhone.
    - Checked for software conflicts.
    - Restarted the computer after each change.
    - Reinstalled Apple Automatic Update from a fresh download.
    - Reinstalled iTunes using the Automatic Update application.
From here I started iTunes again and plugged in my iPhone. This time however I got a message saying something along the lines of "cannot connect iPhone, required software is not installed, this is a 32bit version of iTunes, please uninstall and reinstall the 64bit version of iTunes (this is a little confusing as I learnt earlier that you cannot install the 32 bit version on a 64 bit machine as you get an error during installation).
So, again. I uninstalled all of iTunes and associated software, downloaded the 64bit version of iTunes again - thinking the original version of the EXE was corrupted somehow during the download. After reinstalling, I plugged in my iPhone. It showed that the device drivers were installing, however at some point they failed. I then went back into device manager and uninstalled the USB driver and clicked on "check for hardware changes". This time the iPhone was found and appeared to install the drivers successfully when I plugged the iPhone back in... but low and behold, the iPhone was still not showing up in iTunes.
I have spent a good few hours on this, and am getting pretty frustrated. Does anyone on here have an ACTUAL fix for this problem?
The only thing I haven't done is do a factory reset of my iPhone, which I'nm hesitant to do, as I haven't had a chance to "export my purchases" off the handset to the PC as yet.
    Cheers,
    Steve
PS: Just out of interest, the iPhone still connects perfectly fine on my work (XP) machine.

I'm an applications developer and also run a part-time videography business. As such, I require more than 3.12GB of RAM. That is the physical limitation of a 32bit system. Pointless to stay on 32bit if you plan on having more than that much RAM.
I'm also not about to pay someone to fix my PC when I can do it myself. I was originally hoping for someone who had experienced the problem before to point me in the right direction so I didn't have to spend so much time trying to figure out what the issue was for myself.
Basically, in the end the problem was caused because right at the point in time when I chose to uninstall, and reinstall; Apple released a new version of iTunes. This version in turn had a requirement of iOS 4.2 to sync with the iPhone. This is a pretty embarrassing for Apple that they would release software reliant on other software before said software was released.
Had I realised I was downloading a newer version at the initial point of installation, this wouldn't have been an issue. I could've easily have rolled back iTunes to the previous version and gotten on with my life.
Another issue is that iTunes is not actually a 64 bit application. It masquerades as one to allow installation on the 64 bit platform.

I just bought a new laptop and my ipod nano will not stay connected to my computer. When I first connect the ipod it starts to sync on my ipod but not on itunes. The ipod is initially connected to my computer, I can see it when I look on devices in my computer. However, when it finishes syncing it is no longer detected to my computer. I cannot transfer any of my songs to my new laptop because of this. I have tried to reinstall itunes, reset my ipod and use a different port. None of these things worked. Any ideas?
