IPod Nano Won't Boot Past Apple Logo...

...Got an interesting problem here. Replaced an LCD in a Nano for a friend, installation went smooth & without problems (or so I thought). After installation was complete, I put the Nano back together & started loadin' & playin music on the Nano. About 2 days later, I decided to update it w/the new iPod Updater (can't remember the date). Now the iPod Nano won't boot past the Apple Logo. I can tell that the "menu" has been loaded 'cuz you can hear the clickin' sound when you operate the wheel.
I've tried reformatting the iPod Nano (quick & full) & then trying to restore it, but it won't boot past the logo (after successful restoration?). Now I'm going to run the battery dead & then try to restore it again.
Any suggestions/comments on this?

The solution I see in your case is to go back and download an older iPod Updater.

I suggest taking either the January 2006 iPod Updater, or March 2006 iPod Updater.
IMHO, Some of these freezing issues occur because of a fault in the latest iPod Updater.
I suggest going back to March (or January), and the nano could possibly work again for you.

IPod Video Won't Boot Past Apple Logo

I've had my 5th Generation iPod Video (80 GB) for about 1 1/2 years. I was using it the other day and it froze in the middle of a song, so I used the reset function to reboot it. Now it won't boot past the Apple logo; it just stays there (until the battery runs out).
I definitely can't use the iTunes "restore" function, since I've been unable to get my computer to acknowledge when it is plugged in.
I'm guessing this means my hard drive is done for? If so, I'm comfortable replacing it myself, but I could use some advice regarding a good (and economically priced) replacement drive. After a quick look inside my iPod, it appears the hard drive model is a Toshiba MK8010GAH.

You might try forcing the iPod into disk mode first, then connecting it to your computer and see if that makes it show up in iTunes...

Mac Mini won't boot past Apple logo and spinning wheel

I have a Mac mini (late 2009) running 10.8.2. Today, I tried to log into the computer. It accepted my username and password, but then the screen turned gray instead of logging in. I left it like that for about twenty minutes, then gave up on waiting and Ctrl-Command-Power rebooted it. It then wouldn't reboot: it gets to the Apple logo and spinning loading wheel, but won't go past there.
So I went into single-user mode and was able to access the HD fine. I ran a filesystems check using the recommended syntax (/sbin/fsck -fy, I think). It said that the volume looked okay, and that it had been modified. I took this as a good sign (that it had been repaired) and typed "reboot" to restart the machine. I held Command-Shift-V to perform a Verbose Safe Boot.
The computer makes no further progress after the following four lines:

I'm assuming all the instances of "vbox" are in reference to Oracle's VirtualBox VM. I do have VirtualBox installed, but haven't used it in a while (months), so I don't see why it's suddenly causing a problem.
To clarify, the computer doesn't "hang" after these lines: I can still type text into the terminal. The entire log is being saved to /dev/console, so I could probably grab it from Single-User Mode if necessary.
Everything else seems to be working properly: even the wl0 drivers are loaded.
Does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this, or at least disable VirtualBox so the computer can start?

Once the spinning gear appears the BSD kernel (Darwin) has assumed command and begins loading device drivers. Shortly thereafter it transfers command to the almighty (and controversial) launchd process. Such are the workings of UNIX.
What this means for us mortals is that when a Mac stalls at the Apple logo or the logo with a spinning gear, it probably has a corrupt Mac OS X installation. It may also be having trouble accessing an internal or external hardware component, but this is less-likely.
Rebooting your Mac in Safe Mode can sometimes get things working well-enough that a second, normal reboot then works normally Hold down the Shift key at startup to boot in Safe Mode. DiskWarrior is also worth a shot (this is by far my most used disk utility). If that doesn’t work, an Archive & Install may be needed.

Iphone 3G won't boot past apple logo - not typical case that I've searched and read about

I am attempting to fix an Iphone 3G for a friend. Before the phone stopped working, they said the battery life was getting worse progressively until the point that they had to turn down the brightness and have it plugged in often. The phone was jailbroken and unlocked for use on Tmobile. I don't know what firmware it's on nor how it was jailbroken, just that they said it worked fine for 3 years. When this problem first occurred, my friend was able to get the phone into recover mode, but it would shut down after several seconds even when plugged into a computer or power source.
Currently, the phone will not boot past the apple logo. It powers up, goes to the apple logo, and powers down 20 or so seconds later. The spinning gear never appears. I can not get the phone to boot into recovery nor DFU mode. The computer doesn't recognize it or even acknowledge when it is plugged in, so irecover that some people use to solve their recovery loop mode i won't work either. I have the luxury of having a functional iphone 3g that I used to swap parts to narrow down the culprit.
Steps taken:
replaced battery
swapped usb connector on bottom of phone
swapped lcd assembly in case it was the home button
took the motherboard out and placed it in the working phone, and it still doesn't boot past the apple logo
I'm out of ideas at this point. Thanks for anything you guys (and gals) can think of.

I See a lot of those on my bench. The cause is the charge IC is burned out usually by a non Apple cable. The only way to get it to fully boot is to put a fresh charged battery in. Once a new fully charged battery is in it will continue to work fine including charging. But if you ever power off the device or it turns off due to dead battery it will not boot up on its own And you will need to swap batteries again.

Powermac G5 won't boot past apple logo screen

I'm trying to repair a Powermac G5 (dual 2.0, the first model I believe, with a new Radeon 9800 graphics card) that won't boot and I'm having some problems that I can't seem to diagnose.
The machine will boot to the openfirmware prompt or target disc mode and will show the 'OS not found' icon if left to boot from the HD (which has been wiped). If I try to boot from either the included restore disc or a retail 10.4 DVD I've tried it will show the boot screen with the Apple logo on it but no spinning status indicator underneath. It just freezes on that screen. Once it showed the status indicator but it just continued to spin for about 30 mins, at which point I gave up. Same issue if I try to boot the hardware test (except it freezes on the hardware test loading icon rather than the Apple icon). The superdrive appears to work as it is accessible in target disc mode.
I've reset the SMU and reset the PRAM via the keyboard shortcut. The one thing that leads me to think it's a firmware fault is that when I run the 'reset-nvram' command it gives an OK, but when I then run 'reset-all' it freezes rather than rebooting. Any ideas anyone?

I am having the same problem with my Power Mac G5. I have had a problem with the machine for the last few months, I just turned it off waiting for Leopard (started using a laptop for projects).
I got Leopard, tried to boot off the DVD, I only get to the grey Apple logo and then after a few minutes the fans kick on high and I just have to shut the machine down.
I didn't want to lose any thing off my hard drive so I went and bought a new one and installed it, when that failed to install to, I bought a new optical drive. It still won't boot off the optical drive. I can go into the firmware and choose which drive to boot from (I choose the optical).
My configuration at this point is a new DVD drive, new unformatted hard drive, I have used a laptop to try to install from using the G5 in target mode, using the laptop in target mode to use as an optical drive. All of these steps have failed.
I have 4 gig of RAM, Pioneer 112D DVD, Maxtor 250 Gig HD, I have reset the SMU, I have the NVidia card (can't remember which model).
Any ideas where else to look for a solution?

G5 Dual won't boot past Apple logo

Been using this m/c since late 2005 without problems. It's usually left on 24/7 (auto sleep, power save etc) except for a restart once a week.
This morning the machine was still showing the screen saver (had not slept overnight?), the fans were running at full speed and the red LED (SD8?) on the logic board was lit. Powered it down and restarted 10 minutes later without issues. Used it for maybe 30 minutes and went out for a couple of hours. Fans were running high, LED was on and screen was locked when I got back.
This time however it would not boot up after powering down. Starts as normal, chimes but only reaches the grey screen with the Apple logo and hangs. If it's left in that state the fans increase speed after a few minutes and, after an hour or so, the drive bay fan reaches the 'warning' speed and the red LED comes on.
Have been unable to boot ever since. Cannot boot from OS-X disk. Cannot boot in Safe Mode. Everything stops at the Apple logo.
Have done the following:
Reset SMC/PMU (Tech articles say that late 2005 G5s don't have PMU resets but the reset button behind the fan assembly is actually marked PMU Reset).
Switched out RAM
Reset PRAM
Checked all connectors.
(Note, the Air Deflector sensor is working correctly)
The only thing I can still do is to run AHT. It passed the Quick test and It's currently running the extended test but I expect it will pass that too (never had a machine that didn't pass AHT, even when it had a faulty logic board).
I suspect a major hardware failure but because I can't boot cannot try any software solutions first. Anybody have any ideas short of expensive repair/replacement?

This issue seems to be solved, with the assistance of a thread in the Tiger forum. I thought an update here might help others. To reiterate, the machine could not be booted past the Apple logo (no spinning gear wheel) either normally, or with the G5 install disks, or using the Option key startup, or safe mode.
Apple tech support felt that it was a hardware issue based on the description of the symptoms. In fact it seems to have been a software problem all along.
It was solved by:
Starting up using the original purchased Tiger OS-X 10.4 disks (when Tiger was first released). Although the disks that came with the G5 machine would not start up, the Tiger DVD did (with the C key held down) boot to the installer.
Instead of doing a re-install however I simply quit the installer and, from the dialogue box you get, selected the G5 as the startup disk. Clicked restart and, voila, the machine started up normally, and has been restarted half a dozen times since without issues.
There were no problems with the drive, and even repairing Disk Permissions was very minor, not much to repair.
Don't know why it worked with the Tiger disk (or if there is still some underlying hardware issue that will come back) but it did boot and everything seems fine.
Hope this might help somebody else.

MacBook won't boot past Apple logo on start up

I recently installed 10.5 on my MacBook and it worked fine until today when I installed a security update and a MobileMe update on it. after it restarted, none of the applications would work (including system preferences and finder) and would not shut down without using the power switch. When I went to boot it up again, it gets as far as the Apple logo with the spinning loading icon, but won't go any farther than that, and after about a minute, the fan starts running at high speed. I ran the hardware test and booted it from the disc and both showed no problems. the disc utility on the disc boot was even able to read the hard disc information. I'm hoping that this isn't a hard disc problem, because I already went through that before in February.

This suggests that your problem isn't hardware but that your OS installation is munged. I suggest that you run your OS installer and use Archive & Install. Assuming you have enough empty drive space, this will install your operating system without disturbing your data or applications. You'll have to reapply all the OS updates and you might find that a program or two also requires reinstallation, but not many. The last time I did an A&I on my personal computer I didn't have to reinstall any programs.
What happened? Dunno but given that you'd just installed an OS update before this, I suspect that the updater either failed or that there was a small OS problem that the updater magnified. Being in charge of a couple Mac labs, I see one or two of these post update failures a year even though I always run Disk Utilities to verify the disks before I update.

Iphone won't boot past apple logo

I'm the repair tech at my local radioshack and have a customer phone I can't figure out. When I attempt to power it on, I get the apple logo for 5 seconds, then nothing. I've attempted to put it into DFU mode, and attempted recovery mode, at no avail. I've even tried to boot into safe mode, and the same thing occurs. No matter the power source (wall/computer), I get the same results. Phone is out of warranty, so do not recommend that I bring it to apple - they won't help me here. Any ideas? I need the help!

(Safe Mode takes a long time to start up compared with a normal startup, so if the progress indicator that looks like a spinning gear shows up, let it go for a long time before giving up on it.)

Won't start past apple logo, won't boot from install disc

mbp penryn 2.4 core 2 duo won't boot past apple logo. Running mtn lion 10.8... inserted Snow Leopard install disc, held down C key, only get a grey screen.Recently installed new HD, (seagate 750 Hybrid), upped ram from 2x2 to 2x4. All has been running very smoothly (and much cooler) for the past 3 weeks. Then this, prompted apparently by the mac going to sleep w/o being plugged in. Ran battery down, I suppose? Happens frequently.
Any suggestions?

On the odd chance that I did ruin my ram I replaced w/ 4gb brand new ram, reset SMC and PRAM, then attempted to boot. Still a grey screen. Also re-attempted to put mbp into target mode, but no luck there either, nor with ejecting the Snow Leopard install disc via option/trackpad method, both on startup and while running, and no luck there either. I have a second Penryn mbp that I could salvage for a spare part if I knew what the problem might be. So far I get the idea from your responses that my machine SHOULD be rebooting, but for some reason isn't.

I hear, consistently on attempting startup, fans powering up, then two short whirrs as if a drive head is moving, then when the fans quiet down after 30-45 seconds, another short but different whirr, then only quiet fans and a grey screen.

My iPod Nano is stuck on the Apple logo

My iPod Nano is stuck on the Apple logo. I have reset and restored it multiple times to no avail. When I slide my finger of the scroll wheel I can hear the clicking meaning that it's actually navigating the menus behind that logo, it even plays music. It can enter disk mode and diagnostic mode fine as well. I can't turn it of though, it just get a little darker when the Play button is held. It's a 5G Nano.
What can I do to fix this?

If you have an Apple Store, near you, make an appointment to take it to them. If it's not a hardware failure, they may be able to help.

Reset phone - press both home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo reappears.
If that doesn't work, try recovery:
1. Update to latest iTunes (10.3.1)
2. Connect phone to a USB port directly on the computer
3. Press both home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears, then continue pressing the home button alone until iTunes detects the phone in Recovery mode.
4. Follow the prompts to restore.

The iPhone can only be serviced in the country where it has been bought, and it can't be shipped internationally to Apple Support, you'll or somebody else have to bring it personally. If you registered the phone with your Apple ID, you might not need the receipt, Apple Support should have your data.
Did you try to set it back to factory settings without using any backup afterwards?
