IPod Nano won't hold charge, play or sync

Hi all,
been having issues with my 6th gen iPod Nano recently.
When charging, it will hold charge for a small amount of time but no more than an hour even after being left overnight.
When clicking on the radio app it doesn't recognise headphones are plugged in.
When trying to play a song, it says it is playing but there is no sound and the scrubbing bar remains at 0 seconds. If you scrub to later in the track it says it is playing but does not advance.
When connecting to a computer it freezes and rarely pops up in iTunes.
I have tried restoring it, charging from full and accessing the menu by pressing the volume + & - buttons, but now all this does is bring up a white screen which says 'ok to disconnect'.
I'm out of ideas, but would love to hear anyone elses suggestions.
Thanks,
Matt

It depends on how you are using the Nano.  Otherwise, no.  If you feel as though this is an issue, schedule an appointment at your local Apple Store/Genius Bar and explain the situation to them.

My iPod classic 80GB won't hold a charge and has a lot of static when i try to play music...fixable problem or do i need to invest in a new one?

    Hi Candyfornia,
I think you must restore your iPod (with iTunes) to solve your problem...

  • Ipod classic won't hold charge

My apple ipod classic which is just a yr or two old won't hold a charge.  The battery icon has a lightning bolt in it so it says its charging but it won't hold a charge.  Any ideas?

It sounds your iPod's battery is shot and in need of replacement.  You can have Apple service it at a flat rate or you can find a third party repair site who can do it for much less.

  • IPod nano issues restoring/holding charge?

My ipod nano needs to be restored nightly and is running out of charge without being used, any suggestions?

I don't know of anything else to suggest. Do you live near the store you purchased it from? Or would you need to send it in?

  • Help! ipod nano won't hold as many songs as it says it can

I have an ipod nano that is 2GB and can hold up to 500 songs. I only have 113 songs on it and when i try to put more on it it says that there is not enough room to put more songs on it. How do i make it able to hold more songs????
    Toshiba   Windows XP

Bear in mind that the song limit advertised is based on 4 minute per song, 1MB per minute, encoded as 128 kbps in AAC format.
Check the encoding of your songs. To do this, right click one the sorting columns in iTunes tick bit rate, then click this new column to sort the songs by bit rate. Any songs that are encoded at higher than 128 kbps will be causing excess space to be used for storage. To change the bit rate of these songs you can convert them to AAC format (sound quality will be lost). Or you can reimport them from CD/Computer once you have changed the import settings as detailled below, but that could be time consuming.
To convert go to the edit menu, select preferences, click the advanced tab, and select importing. For best song capacity on the iPod, make sure that the encoder is set to "Import using AAC encoder", and "High quality 128 kbps". Hit OK. Then collect together all the high encoded songs and select them all (click the top one and hold shift, then click the bottom one). Right click the highlighted area and go to "Convert selection to AAC". This could take a while if there are many songs.
Once complete, go to the Edit menu, and select "Show duplicate songs". Delete all the "old" songs, recognisable by their bitrate, format or size. Again, to show these, right click a sorting column, and tick the respective ones.
Once this is done, update the iPod.
If your songs are all changed into 128kbps AAC and are mostly all around 4 mins long, then you should get very close to the song limit advertised

  • HT1384 iPod touch won't hold charge

iPod touch, 1yr old, doesn't hold charge when not in use for couple days.  Is it possible that something is running in the background and
If so how would I check?

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order
    To extend battery life see:
    Apple - Batteries - iPod
It is not unusual for the an iPod left in sleep mode with wifi on to discharge fully in a day or so.

  • My ipod mini won't hold charge

I've had my pod mini for only two months. I charged the battery overnight but after just 10 minutes of use the battery was empty. Why is it not holding charge? What should I do? I am disappointed that this is happening because I really love my it.

I would not send it back. I would do what this guy says. Mine is finally working right after numerous resets with it plugged into charger and by doing many of the things this says:

I'm not sure if it charged when I hooked it up to my roommate's computer, but it definately didn't register either. If I put it on the dock it plays so the port is fine, but that still doesn't help me sync it to my computer.

iPod touch 2nd G won't hold charge. Restore does not help. Removed all apps and it still discharges even if not turned on and used for anythig. What gives?

If it is warranty, bring it back to the Genius bar and insist on a replacement.  If out of warranty, you can get a replacement iPod with a new battery for $79 at the genius bar.

You are still under warranty if your iPod is "new."  Take full advantage of it by either calling iPod tech support, Apple Care if you have it or take it in to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

my ipod touch won't hold a charge and gets really hot when im using it. what is going on?

Likely that the battery is dead.  I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store to confirm. Apple will replace the battery for this price:

There are third-party places which may be less expensive.  Here is one. Google for more.

  • HT1435 my 3rd generation iPod nano won't charge

My 3rd generation iPod nano won't charge and when i connect it, it shows up charging then the screen goes black and wont work. Can i get it replaced for a new one? or a different one? What can i do?

    Try these steps listed below.
    1. Run “c:\WINDOWS\system32\devmgmt.msc” (i.e. *Device Manager*), and leave it open for now for later use
    2. Start up iTunes
    3. Next, connect your iPod.
    4. Go to your iPod Settings and select the “Enable disk use” option from under theSummary tab.
    5. A dialog box will pop up reminding you that you’ll need to manually eject. Go ahead and hit OK
    6. Hit Apply to save changes to the iPod
    7. Quickly switch to the Device Manager window and right-click on any item within the window and select “Scan for hardware changes”
    8. Finally, switch back to iTunes, and try re-syncing your iPod to see if it helped.
It might not also hurt to trash your iPod's Photo cache if it has one (i.e. you sync photos to the iPod).  See this article for information on where to find this folder on your Windows XP machine.

  • TA44551 My iPod nano won't charge.

My iPod nano won't charge.  It's only 2 months old.  I've tried using two different computers (direct connect - no USB hub, Windows 7) as well as a wall plug.  Checked the nano port for dirt.  Don't have a second cord.

Two possibilities that i can think of:
One- Your charger isn't working try getting a new one.
    or
Two- Your iPod needs a new battery. Take it into the apple store to have it fixed or replaced.

  • 7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect.

7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect. I loaded some new music, synced and ejected correctly. screen went black on unplug. Waited, did the button trick, didn't work. plugged it back in & it is recognized immediately. restored, resynced & ejected again. same thing-black screen w/ no response. Charged it overnight. ejected, screen then went to language setting. OK for English, eject & back to black on unplug. Switched ports for cable, tried eject thru PC...all resulting in dead nano after unplug. I really don't want to charge into the store & take it out on the poor kid who will catch the brunt of my frustration. anyone have a suggestion?

    Hello Marie,
I would be concerned too if my iPod nano was not powering on.  I found an article for the 6th generation iPod nano that has steps you can take for an issue like this (the only difference for the 7th generation iPod nano is the steps you will take for the reset. I included the steps to reset a 7th generation iPod nano below):
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting the device while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
You can find the full article here:
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
All the steps apply to the 7th generation except the steps for the reset.  To reset a 7th generation iPod nano, use these steps:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for six seconds, or until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo appears after a few seconds, and then the Home screen. You may need to repeat this step.
I got these steps from this tutorial, which may also help with your iPod not appearing in iTunes:
