Ipod nano won't mount

i just got this nano after having a 20 GB monochrome, and it refuses to work. i plugged it in, expecting it to work with my already loaded itunes and ipod updater. my computer didn't recognize it, so i unplugged it and got an error message--the folder with an exclamation point. I uninstalled, reinstalled, and updated itunes and the updater, and i tried resetting the nano, but it wont reset.
the computer recognizes it as an ipod and a device, but it doesn't show up on "my computer" or in itunes or in the updater. One time the ipod updater said "ipod won't mount". i dont know what to do. doesn't apple have a help line? can i telephone them??
Thanks,

Hi Jerrd15,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
I am guessing you mean 2Gb instead of 20Gb. Have you tried "The Five Rs"? Have you looked at Knowledge Base Document #93716 about What To Do When Your iPod Shows Up In Windows, But Not iTunes? I don't use Windows often, so it doesn't show up in Windows (from your statement about my computer - I didn't know if there was another way of telling)? This Knowledge Base Document #61711, which troubleshoots When Your Windows PC Doesn't Recognize iPod should help.

  • 1st gen iPod Nano won't mount in iTunes but will in Finder.

Cable: Fine -- works with other iPods. Other cables work fine with other iPods too.
iTunes -- uninstalled and reinstalled. No effect.
iPod nano -- downloaded iTunes for Windows, ran it in Parallels on the same mac, managed to restore the iPod nano (alas, as a Windows flavour one now).
Finder can still mount it as a disk; since iTunes on the mac won't recognise it... I'm beginning to wonder what on earth's happened to iTunes!
    Any ideas?

    Hello rgc123456,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article outlines various steps that you can take and may lead to a potential resolution. The article refers to an iPod that is not recognized in both iTunes and Mac desktop, however most steps are applicable for your situation as well.

  • Ipod Nano won't mount on desktop or itunes

I am having problems with my new iPod nano.
It will not mount on my iBook or mini. I have tried it on a windows XP machine also which didn't work.
I have tried to do the combo update of OS 10.3.9 and re installed the ipod drivers and itunes ... this didn't work either.
I have tried to call apple tech support but was on hold for one hour before giving up and trying to resolve the issue myself.
I found in the system log the following message:
    Sep 19 21:20:35 localhost kernel: disk1s2: I/O error.
    Sep 19 21:20:35 localhost diskarbitrationd[91]: unable to repair /dev/disk1s2 (status code 0x00000008).
I think this indicates a hardware problem with the nano because I have identified that disk1s2 is the ipod nano by looking under usb on the system profiler.
Has anyone got any ideas before I call apple and ask them to replace the iPod ??
    Cheers
    mrbolly

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
An I/O error could be a hardware problem or it could be caused by a bad file directory on the iPod (a software issue then). So, your System Profiler can see the iPod is connected? Have you installed the software that came with the iPod nano on your Mac and then tried to restore your iPod to the factory settings? This will erase it (and in the process erase any file directory errors). On your Mac, it will be reformatted as a Mac-only drive. If you need to share it with your Windows computer, then you should restore it on the Windows computer as the Mac can read the Windows formatting but Windows can't read the Mac formatting. When you VERY first plugged the iPod nano into your Mac (if that was the first computer ever), you would have seen a message saying "optimizing for Mac OS X". This is the system reformatting your iPod for the Mac. So, it's not a surprise the Windows PC wouldn't see the iPod if you plugged it into the Mac first... Let us know if you have trouble using the iPod updater to restore your iPod nano. If you do, that would probably indicate it's time to call AppleCare Support.

  • Ipod classic won't mount after updating to itunes 11.0.2

ipod classic won't mount after updating to itunes 11.0.2.
I updated to itunes 11.0.2 today, after delaying it for a looong time (I have it @ work and don't like the new layout).
Since then, none of my ipods will mount/show up/update. I've tried all USB ports, 3 ipods, 3 cords. Wondering if you know of any issues. I've restarted the mac about 15-20 times today since as soon as I hook up an ipod, itunes immediately spins the beach ball and won't let me click out of it.
I've restarted the ipods 10+ times each.
All of the ipods DO show up on my desktop though. Just not in itunes anywhere with 11.0.2.
One more thing: It's not the cables or the ipods: they both mount fine when connected to my laptop (running old *** 10.4.11 and itunes 9.)
Machine is a Mac Pro running 10.6.8.

Finding this Post took some time but I thought it was me talking when I read it. I was having the exact same issue. I have a G3 I've been upgrading like mad, including a Sonnet G4-500 CPU a Maxtor 60gb & 80gb HDs 1gb of RAM a new LaCie Firewire800 PCI card Graphics card etc. the latest was installing Panther 10.3.9 on the new 80gb HD and also swapping out the old CD-ROM and replacing with the (Apple standard) Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-110D combo drive in it's place. got everything up and booted and poof! no burning. Toast worked read/write no problem. iTunes could read and import no problem, but wouldn't burn a CD.
Downloaded "PatchBurn 3.1.3" installed, re-booted and all is OK in burner land again :>)
I wanted to just post my additional thanks to the lead to Patchburner, and I'm going to donate to the cause. It's worth a $20 donation just for my joy of not throwing this computer out the window!!

I downloaded the latest version of itunes and now my ipod nano won't sync.  The sync process appears to lock up on the 2nd song and will not continue to sync. I let it run all night the first time and it never went past the 2nd song.  I unchecked the 2nd song so a different song would be 2nd, no benefit; reset my ipod nano; shut down laptop and restarted a different time; shorted the number of songs to sync; all without benefit.

When you connect your ipod up to the computer. It should show the device, usually with the name of the device, in my case 'jordan's ipod'. This should be on the row which shows 'songs', 'albums' e.t.c on the far right. There when you click on it it should go to a different screen showing a picture of your ipod along with two buttons - Update and Restore. Click update and it should take a 2 mins while your ipod is updated to the latest version of Ios.
After updating te ipod see if there is a change in results.
PS: make sure the device is active while syncing so keep tapping the screen.
Sorry for any incorrect info, i have an ipod touch, but i've had experience with an ipod

If you've read the Technical Specification you will find that the nano can only use Firewire for charging, not for syncing:
    http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html
"Charging via USB or FireWire to computer system or power adapter (sold separately)"
So you can rule that out.

  • Ipod Nano won't start - folder w/exclamation point error message!

My Ipod Nano won't start! I got it about a year ago and whenever I try to turn it on, a folder with an exclamation point and the words, "www.apple.com/support/ipod" come up. I've tried to get it to work but it's not. I even tried looking in the help sections on apple.com and everything I found didn't help. My Ipod isn't frozen, I just can't get it to the menu screen. I really don't want ot have to reset my Ipod and have all my previous songs and pictures erased because I can't get them back. Does anybody have a possible solution to this problem? Please help.

I right-clicked the iPhone in Device Manager and chose Update Driver (for me, the iPhone was showing up in the Device Manager under Imaging Devices).
I selected "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and clicked Next.
I chose "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" and clicked Next.
In the next window there were 2 drivers to choose from: the "Digital Still Camera" driver that my PC kept thinking the iPhone was, and Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. I selected the Apple Mobile Device driver.
The driver installed, and at that point iTunes 9.2 could finally detect the iPhone. Yay!"

My 7th generation iPod nano won't allow me to sync videos from iTunes. How can I fix this?

What video content works with iTunes and mobile devices?
    iTunes:
Video content purchased from the iTunes Store.
QuickTime and MPEG-4 movie files that end in ".mov", ".m4v", or ".mp4" and are playable in QuickTime Player.
    Video podcasts.
    iTunes Digital Copies.
iTunes Store Movie Rentals (Requires iTunes 9 or later).
    Mobile Devices:
Video content purchased from the iTunes Store.
Videos that have been shared to iTunes using QuickTime Player (Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard).
Videos that have been re-encoded for iPod with QuickTime 7 Pro.
Videos that have been re-encoded for iPod with iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and others. Refer to Exporting a movie from iMovie HD to iPod for an iMovie HD tutorial.
Video Podcasts that have been created for mobile devices.
Video files after using the iTunes File > Create New Version > Create iPod or iPhone version option.
Video files after using the iTunes File > Create New Version > Create iPad or AppleTV version option (iPad and AppleTV only).
See below for detailed movie specifications.
iTunes  Store Movie Rentals (Requires iTunes 9 or later).
Does the video need to be encoded in a special way?
All mobile devices which iTunes can sync video to can play the following video formats:
    H.264
File formats: .m4v, .mp4, and .mov
Video: Up to 768 kbits/sec, 320 x 240, 30 frames per second (fps), Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3.
Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 kbits/sec, 48 Khz, and stereo audio.
    MPEG-4
File formats: .m4v, .mp4, and .mov
    Video: Up to 2.5 Mbits/sec, 480 x 480, 30 fps, Simple Profile.
Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 kbits/sec, 48 Khz, stereo audio.
Other formats may be supported by newer devices. The technical specifications can give additional details.

  • IPod nano won't sync in new laptop

    Hello everyone,
my 6th generation 8GB iPod Nano won't sync in a new Windows 8 (not upgraded to 8.1) laptop. iTunes recognizes it and is able to enable disk use but will not sync the music. The computer also recognizes it. It just won't sync, when I press the sync button it seems as if it is going to sync but it stops after a few seconds without synching or changing anything. I already uninstalled and installed iTunes and restarted the laptop and the problem is still there. Also I wonder why iTunes doesn't say that the iPod is synched with another library and if I want to sinc it with the new one since the music my iPod currently has comes from an old laptop that doesn't work anymore so that's why I have my music now in this new computer, but it won't sync and it's frustrating. Any advice? Thank you.

  • IPod nano won't sync; dreaded "duplicate file" message

Suddenly, my old but heretofore functioning iPod Nano won't sync radio podcasts. Gets the "duplicate file" message. I have tried resetting multiple times; reinstalled iTunes, changed the port, checked for plug-ins (no iToner) etc. Ran diagnostic; it fails the device sync test, saying no iPod touch found.
I have seen some other complaints about this.
Is there a solution? I have done most of the troubleshooting steps but did not restore iPod to virginity (hoping to avoid reloading songs onto it).
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • 6th Gen iPod Nano won't sync to Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz PowerPC iTunes 9.2

My iPod classic bit the dust so I bought a new iPod Nano 6th Gen. My Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz PowerPC can only run iTunes 9.2. From what I can tell this new iPod Nano won't work with my Powerbook, which is hard to believe since my old school iPod from the early 2000s worked great until I dropped it and it split in half.
My iPhone 3Gs syncs fine so it is incredibly annoying and disturbing that a new iPod Nano 6th gen. won't sync.
If in order to get this iPod Nano to work with my current system I'm required to upgrade my iTunes from 9.2 to 10 then I need to upgrade my OS from OS 10.4.11 to OS 10.5 which requires that I upgrade computer by purchasing an entirely new laptop then I might just have to revert to my old school Sony DiscMan.
My iPod Classic 2nd gen. worked great until it broke and my iPhone Gs syncs great, so I can't believe that this new iPod Nano 6th gen. won't work without a simple fix.
Come Apple, don't fail me now.

Your problem is completely different from the original post. The OP could not run the correct version of iTunes on their older computer. You're much more likely to get the help you need by starting your own thread with a properly descriptive subject line.

  • 7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect.

7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect. I loaded some new music, synced and ejected correctly. screen went black on unplug. Waited, did the button trick, didn't work. plugged it back in & it is recognized immediately. restored, resynced & ejected again. same thing-black screen w/ no response. Charged it overnight. ejected, screen then went to language setting. OK for English, eject & back to black on unplug. Switched ports for cable, tried eject thru PC...all resulting in dead nano after unplug. I really don't want to charge into the store & take it out on the poor kid who will catch the brunt of my frustration. anyone have a suggestion?

    Hello Marie,
I would be concerned too if my iPod nano was not powering on.  I found an article for the 6th generation iPod nano that has steps you can take for an issue like this (the only difference for the 7th generation iPod nano is the steps you will take for the reset. I included the steps to reset a 7th generation iPod nano below):
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting the device while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
You can find the full article here:
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
All the steps apply to the 7th generation except the steps for the reset.  To reset a 7th generation iPod nano, use these steps:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for six seconds, or until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo appears after a few seconds, and then the Home screen. You may need to repeat this step.
I got these steps from this tutorial, which may also help with your iPod not appearing in iTunes:
iPod nano not appearing in iTunes
