IPod Nano Won't Update Or Restore To 1.1.3

I tried to update an iPod nano to 1.1.3 using iTunes 7.2 and the update froze after being prompted for an admin user id and password. After 10 minutes I killed iTunes and then tried to update the nano again after iTunes discovered it was in recovery mode. That too froze and I had to kill iTunes again.
I then went through the nano reset procedure and put the nano in disk mode and formated it. The format seemed to work, but the restore to 1.1.3 still freezes.
This nano has had no problems until I tried to update it to 1.1.3.
Any idea what to do now? Maybe try 1.1.2? Where can I get it?
Thanks.

I not only cannot update the nano, I can't copy music to it either. These problems occur on an iMac G4.
I was able to update the nano and copy music using my iMac G3 running iTunes 7.0.2.
So I went back to the iMac G4 and tried all of these things:
1) Moved the nano to another USB port
2) Used the cable from the iMac G3 on the iMac G4
3) Rebooted my back-up disk and ran iTunes 7.0.2
None of these changes fixed the problem. I still cannot copy music to the nano on my iMac G4.
Any idea why the G3 works and the G4 fails? Could the 1.1.3 update be the problem?
Thanks.

My iPod Shuffle won't update or restore when I put my iPod in it says iPod Service Error or Can't Mount iPod. Can someone please help me?

The same thing happened to me, I called Apple (Is your Ipod still have the free 90 days free phone call?) they told me it was my battery. They said they think I should buy a new one. I did not. I didn't think it is really my battery. Are you connections clean? Have you tried different USB hubs? I've heard the USB's in the back tend to give off more power.
    Hope this helps.

  • Nanos won't update or restore

Hello all, I'm new to the forums and fairly new to apple products. I have never really been a big fan of apple just because, and itunes and the nano are now giving me a good reason. I have several gripes about overall itunes functionality, but thats for another section of the forums. My big issue is that my nano will neither update or restore, and I get the message "Could not update ipod 'Ben's Ipod', an unknown error occured (1417)" or "Could not restore ipod 'Ben's ipod', an unknown error occured (1418)". During the attempted "update", the ipod looks like it just goes into the charging mode and has no indication that there is a data connection with the computer. I have come to believe that it is itunes, as i have tried with several nanos (both of my younger brothers have them) and also a shuffle (one of my friends has one) with the same results. I have a very clean install of windows, and the virus protection is disabled. I have tried restarting services and all the other usb ports to no avail. Can any of you help me? I'm just baffled.

    hmmmmmm.
it might be worth quickly checking on the issue from this document:
iTunes for Windows: iTunes 7 doesn't recognize iPod
(my diffidence here is because it's a fairly new issue, and i don't have a good feel for the "symptom sets" associated with it ... still, it does no harm to check.)

  • IPod Nano Won't update, says playlists no longer exist,

I am really getting frustrated with my iPod nano. First it started off by not updating songs. Then it started to erase songs when i connected it to itunes. So i erased everything hoping that would fix it. But now when I try to put them back on the computer says iPod update complete but there are no songs. It also say that the iPod can't be updated because the playlists no longer exist.
If anyone knows how to fix this problem please respond as soon as possible.
    Thanks

Ok, first try a restore. Next, on the playlist issue...
Did you delete the playlists from iTunes? If so, then the iPod is trying to automatically update, but it can't, since the playlists no longer exist. Try putting your iPod into manually update; you can find that in the iPod Options tab.

  • Nano won't update or restore

I just got a Nano, installed the original iTunes & iPod software off the CD, and was able to import and transfer music onto the nano. Yay. I learned that iTunes had an update, so I downloaded & installed that without incident. Yay. I then learned that there was an update to the iPod software - I downloaded that, and during the install, things became hosed. "Do not disconnect" displayed forever. I did a reset of the nano, disconnected it, and saw that the nano was now empty. I have attempted the "5 R's" over & over, with no success. I cannot do an update to the iPod, nor a Restore, because neither iTunes nor iPod Updater recognize the iPod as being plugged in. Also, when I plug in the iPod, iTunes no longer automatically loads. Nothing works right anymore. I've looked through so many help files, nothing has helped so far. Any ideas?? Pls help!

wow man i have exactly the same problem than you , and i have tried all under the sun, im from venezuela but a friend of mine broght me from us an ipod nano of 4 gb, everything was correct until i decided to update my ipod , but during the install the message do not disconnect displayed forever, then, obviously i disconnected my nano after one hour ago or maybe more, but my surprise was that i didnt have neither music nor photos inside mi ipod, i cannot do an update, nor s restore because neither itunes nor ipod updater recognize the ipod as being plugged in. I don´t know what to do, but take this advice my friend, never update your ipod anymore, cause that problem can repeat over and over again, and the apple people know it, hey biff try to give back your ipod for warranty service cuz they will know exactly what to do with your ipod, bye man we are in contact, good luck

  • New Ipod Nano - won't update "not enough space" but its empty!!

My wife's iPod Nano is brand new (I have a Video iPod so iPods are not new to me!)
I get the message that the iPod cannot be updated because library is too big etc....
    What I did:
    I reinstalled iTunes.
Restored library and unticked all tracks.
Downloaded updater and restored iPod Nano.
Tried to update "only checked" tracks - didn't work. Restarted system - settings of "checked songs" were saved - got same message.
Tried unchecking this and doing "only sleceted playlists" with a playlist of 208MB (iPod Nano model is 1Gb) - still got same message.
Tried everything I can think of - still no joy
    Adam

Thanks for the suggestion but I am not using it as Firewire HD and I unchecked "enalbe disc use" anyway.#
Something is definitely not right somewhere - when I switch to manual management of tracks it works fine - its just a pain to do that all the time.
    Cheers

  • 4GB iPod nano will NOT update or restore

I have iTunes 7.0.1 and a 4GB iPod nano (2nd Gen) on Windows XP SP2.
When I plug it into my computer, it appears as a removable disk (even though "Enable Disk use" is unchecked). When I load iTunes, it does not recognise it.
If I then quit iTunes, eject the disk through Windows Explorer and stop the iPod service (via My Computer > Manage > Services & Applications > Services or via Task Manager), then reload iTunes, the iPod service starts again and my iPod appears in iTunes. Great.
However, if I then go to update the iPod with the new 1.0.2 software, once it starts to update, something ejects the iPod and the progress bar in iTunes just sits there. The iPod has been ejected and will never update. I cannot restore it as it does exactly the same thing.
I've just paid good, hard cash for this iPod nano and I can't use it?! Why oh why did Apple put the iPod updater software INSIDE iTunes??? That's a recipe for disaster, as can be seen by the multitude of posts on this topic in these forums and elsewhere on the net.
Before you ask, yes I have tried all the USB ports, yes I have tried other computers, yes I have stopped all anti-virus software, yes blah blah blah. I keep getting error 1415.
I'm really narked off with Apple about this. If they cannot provide a working solution, then it's going back to the store and I'll get a Zune... (that's a joke by the way...)

    SOLUTION
    SOLUTION
I had the exact same problems before, iTunes doesn’t recognize iPod after connecting it, I had to use the restart iPod Service method to get it working.
I tried this on my second computer and it worked perfectly, iTunes recognizes iPod every time I plug it in.
I compared the process/services opened in both computers, and I turned on some services which were previously on disable(excluding iPod Service). Unfortunately I forgot which services it was, so I took some screenshots and compare these with your services.
After modifying the services, I tried plug and unplug the iPod several times without closing iTunes, iPod was instantly recognized by iTunes every time!
I attached the links to screenshots of my automatic services and manual services, ignore the service if its not on your list!
For those don’t know how to open Services, Start -> Run -> “services.msc”

-If anyone know the specific services required to be turned on, please reply in this thread.

  • 4th gen iPod nano won't recover from restoration, what do I do?

So my dad gave me his old 4th gen iPod nano and I didn't want to listen to the garbage he had on it so I plugged it into my computer and restored it, and when it was done restoring, it said it needed to recover. I've tried to do the same restoration process a few times now, and it will not recover. My iTunes recognizes that an iPod is plugged in, but it says that after my multiple restorations, I have 0 KB of available storage, when I should have 8 GB. It says the software is 1.0.4 and my laptop is running off of Windows 7. I've used different cords to make sure it isn't the cord, and it's not. My iTunes is updated and so I know that's not the problem. Help?

The past week I have had to restore it each til this Friday when it stop restoring it. A window pop out say it could it couldn't because of 'Error 2009'. I have done the usb, removed all my security, and checked my usb ports. Nothing is working so far. I even changed computers but it gave me the same error.

  • Ipod touch won't update or restore

My ipod touch will not let me update to the most current software or even restore my ipod to factory settings. It will let me download, but when it is done and ready to install I get a message "There was a problem downloading the ipod software. The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later." Does anyone know what this means? I never seemed to have a problem until I downloaded that January update a few months ago.
I even tried reinstalling itunes but that did not help. Any help or suggestions are appreciated

Try placing the iPod in Recovery mode and then restoring.

  • IPod Nano Won't Update

My iPod's songs were all deleted. They're all still on iTunes, however, and every time I try to update them back on I get the message "Songs on the iPod 'murf' cannot be updated because the playlists selected for updating no longer exist." There are NO playlists!
    Help me, please!

You have probably deleted playlists which are listed to be downloaded.
With the iPod connected, in iTunes choose Preferences>iPod, click the Music tab, and make your choices accordingly.

  • Nano won't update or restore in iPod Updater

-My nano when connected to my PowerBook does not show up in iTunes
-When iTunes is opened, it askes if I want to do a software update for the iPod
-In the updater, it says that it is formated in Windows, and will not allow me to restore it (saying that I need to hook up with a Firewire), nor will it let me update it (saying that only macintosh formatted ipods can be updated).
-I know that i need to restore it in OSX but it will not let me, and using the disk utility to restore it has not seemed to help.
-I tried using a windows computer to restore it, which i was able to do, but it would not let me update it on my mac.
    Any suggestions?

Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Plug your iPod with your Mac, open the iPod updater and hope it will allow you to click RESTORE.
    If still doesn't then
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

  • My iPod Nano won't update new songs onto it!

Alright, so i went to go download new music one day in the Music Store and it said that I needed to download iTunes 6.0.2 or whatever its called. So i finally got the download to work and all my old music showed up and everything was fine. Then i decided to go and buy some more music (in the iTunes Music Store). All the downloads worked and everything and they play on my iTunes but when i plug my iPod into the USB port, it says its updating my iPod, and then it says it is complete but then when i look on my iPod itself, none of the new songs are there! I have no idea how to fix any of this so if someone has any suggestions that would be great!

  • Ipod Nano won't restore to sync

My brand new Ipod Nano won't sync with my Itunes.  The Itunes software tells me to restore my Nano, The screen it tells me to restore using isn't on my Nano, but I restore to factory settings, and it still won't work.  Gives me a message in Itunes"The iPod "iPod" cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application."  What???  I just plugged it into the computer after opening it in the box from the store?

Make sure the Enable disk use option is NOT ticked from under the iPod's Summary tab in iTunes. If you do have to remove this tick mark, be sure to hit the Apply button in the lower left hand corner of the window in iTunes to update the changes to your device. Then try restoring it again.

  • Ipod nano won't sync podcasts from iTunes after I "Restored" the ipod.

iPod nano won't sync podcasts from iTunes after I "Restored" the iPod.

If you've read the Technical Specification you will find that the nano can only use Firewire for charging, not for syncing:
    http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html
"Charging via USB or FireWire to computer system or power adapter (sold separately)"
So you can rule that out.
Have you tried the 5 R's?
