IPod Nano would not connect to Windows or Format. *SOLVED*

Ok, first post and I am just posting to thank those who have posted some different things to try, thanks to you guys, I have a working iPod Nano. Here is what I tried...
The Problem
iTunes would not see my nano and could not format the nano during install. Would just sit on "waiting for ipod..."
The Solution -This worked for me, so I hope it works for you.
After reading on this forum about problems and ways to fix them, I found out a few things. DO NOT install the iTunes that comes on the disk with the nano. Download the latest version off of www.itunes.com and install. Once finished, you will still not see the nano. That's ok. You need to download the software updater for the nano. This can be found @ www.apple.com/support/downloads and click on the iPod updater 2005-11-17. Download and install this program. After the program is installed, do one more thing before running it. (If you try, it will prob lock up, atleast that's what it did on me.) You need to check what drive letter that Windows has set the nano to be. My Windows install is set to E:/ and the nano was set to C:/ automatically. You need to right click on My Computer and click manage. After that opens, click on Disk Management and follow the prompts to change the drive letter to something else. I set mine to Z:/ since nothing is set there. After you have done this, run the iPod updater 2005-11-17 and choose the reset option after it has noticed the iPod. It will format the nano and re-install the new software on the nano. After that is complete, start up iTunes and it should see the nano and automatically help you set up some options. After that, enjoi!
Now, this helped me and I installed and re-installed iTunes a few times. One crucial piece of information, is to restart Windows whenever the software asks you to. Do not take this lightly! I recommend starting fresh with no iTunes or iPod software and begin at the top. Others have written good posts on how to properly remove iTunes and iPod software. Do it to the letter!
Well, that's what I did and hopefully it will help you too.

Hello, lanboyo, JC, and Utah Mike!
First--You may have done this, but have you tried the Five R's? Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall, Restore.
If you have sucessfully done them with hardly any help, then let's keep going:
Second--You may have read this Apple aritcle before, but I'll link you to it anyway.

If it's showing up in My Computer as "F:IPOD" but not in the iTunes source list, check out this Apple article, and see if it helps.

  • Ipod nano does not connect to Windows and itunes

    Dear All
in my family we have 3 ipods: a shuffle, a ipod 20gb and a nano. While the first 2 are easily connecting to windows and itunes, the nano doesn't and does not recognise the USB port of my laptop[message 'unkwnon device']. I have tried, I think, most of the suggestion I found on the apple support and in the forum. Does somebody know any 'special' tip, my son is really getting frustrated by this situation because he can't get the same music. Please help. Thanks in advance

Alternatively, you can always use a double ended 3.5mm audio plug and just manipulate the playlist via the iPod and not the radio.

  • Cannot delete music from ipod nano if not connected!

I couldn´t believe it´s not possible to delete files from my ipod nano 4G when not connected to my PC !! I use it to record talks (w/ XtremeMac´s MicroMemo) and I needed to make some room to record important talks in a seminar and I found it´s impossible to delete some downloaded music! It´s unbelieveable such simple and useful feature is not implemented yet even in this (otherwise excellent) newest generation ipod!!!
Would it be likely a future firmware with this feature?

"Would it be likely a future firmware with this feature?"
No one here would know what future upgrades Apple have planned and they don't as a rule pre-announce what will be contained in Firmware updates. You can leave your feedback/feature request at this link: Apple Product Feedback

  • Help - my iPod Nano is not recognised by windows

Hi I have recently bought a new ipod nano (8gb Aluminium case) and it is not recognised by windows. I have run through all of the trouble shooting tips (reseting ipod, reinstalling itunes, getting latest windows updates, even deleting my temp files). I have also tried all USB ports and tested them with a memory stick to make sure that they are working.
I can hear the standard windows sonic (ding-dong) when I plug in the ipod, but there is no indication of it in my computer or itunes.
    Can anyone help me here?

Have you tried putting your iPod into disk mode, then connect it to your computer?

  • A used iPod Nano is not recognized by Windows XP

I have an iPod Nano 2nd Gen, I have iTunes, that I cannot get to connect to my pc or iTunes and the iPod does charge(it acted like it). And when I connect the iPod to computer the computer says USB Device Not Reconized. Windows XP SP3. Formatted for Windows. Tried it with Windows XP SP2 and three different cables. What can I do?

    Hello there,
Have you tried some of the basics yet such as trying a different connector cable or simply plugging the iPod into different ports? Perhaps try and reset the iPod with it connected to your PC. To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together until the Apple logo appears. You may want to attempt this a few times for good measure.
If still no luck, try and force the iPod into Disk Mode.

Here is more troubleshooting procedures to follow for this issue. It may eventually lead to you needing to uninstall and reinstall iTunes and all Apple software completely.

  • 7th Generation iPod Nano will not connect to iTunes after iTunes 11.1.4.62 update

I updated iTunes to the 11.1.4.62 version last night. Now, when I connect my iPod Nano 7th gen device, iTunes gives me a message stating that an iPod has been connected but could not be indentifed properly, try reconnecting, unistall then reinstall iTunes, blah blah. Tried all that and none of it works. iPod worked fine on this computer on iTunes until this update. Windows 8.1 system.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • IPod nano will not connect and the Apple logo screen stays up

    Hello,
Earlier today I shut my iPod nano off normally (by holding the pause/play button). Later, when I went to listen to it again, I found it wouldn't turn on. I tried resetting it, and I got the low-battery signal, so I plugged it in. The thing is, the Apple logo screen is illuminated and I cannot get it off that screen, and normally when I plug my iPod in, iTunes comes up. iTunes didn't come up and it says there is nothing plugged in. What should I do?
      Windows XP

    Okay.
If the Apple logo is not going away and the iPod won't get to the main menu (when not connected to the computer), try what those links suggest.
If your iPod does not get to the main menu or say Do Not Disconnect, it will not be recognized by the computer. You have to get the iPod to say Do Not Disconnect, show the main menu, or just get past the Apple logo before it will be recognized. The above links will help you get the iPod get past the Apple logo.
The iPod cannot be recognized by iTunes or the computer if it is stuck at the Apple logo.
Finally, don't connect the iPod while the iPod preferences in iTunes are open.

  • Ipod nano 8g not detected by windows and itunes please help

ok i recently got an ipod nano and i havent been able to put anything on it cuz it isnt detected by my pc. it just says usb device not recognized when i connect it. BUT i can still charge my ipod so i dont think its the ipod or the usb cable. the only thing i can think of is having the correct drivers. maybe one of em is corrupted or something? im gonna try to use itunes 7 and see if that works, but if it doesnt, idk what to do then. help is greatly appreciated. thank you

If you have tried everything in these articles, then it needs service.
    iPod battery doesn't charge.
    Sad iPod icon.
What does this picture on my iPod mean?
PC doesn't recognize the iPod is connected.
The sad iPod icon is usually indicative of a hard drive problem, and if under warranty will be repaired/replaced free of charge, although after 6 months of the warranty has expired there is a handling charge.

  • Ipod Nano won't connect to windows vista

    please someone help meeeee

Your speaker has probably auto connected to your phone so the Nano can't see it. Turn off BT on your phone and any other BT devices you've connected with, put the speaker in pairing mode and try again.

  • Hi my 3rd gen iPod nano is not connecting to iTunes - the error message says there is missing software to communicate with the device. I am running iTunes 10.4 on XP and I have tried all the troubleshooting routes to no avail - anybody help me out?

I can't get Itunes to communicate with my 3rd gen Nano - I've reinstalled iTunes several times but still get the same error message for both mine and my wife's ipod - same version of 3rd gen. All the troubleshooting guide has been followed but still not connecting.
    Any ideas?

Never mind, I think. I think I figured it out. There was 1 song (out of > 900!) that somehow had been purchased with the other ID - I have no idea how. Once I deleted that song, it stopped asking.
There may be something with the newest iTunes version too. I didn't think in older versions that the "On this iPod" list of songs was greyed out. But at least it syncs ok.
