IPod needs to be formatted

So I dont have any idea what happened to my iPod, but it needs to be fomatted now.
And I don't have any of the music backed up or anywhere.
Is there anyway I can get it off and put somewhere on the computer without formatting it?

Depends on the size of the Ipod but 10 minutes is a nice time. You could run the installer again. No harm, no foul since it is empty anyway.
Jeff Bryan notes:
First of all, try clicking on the little x in the top corner, which might take you to the next stage in the process. Sometimes it gets stuck.
If this doesn’t work, shut down the computer, disconnect the iPod, restart the computer, run the updater again, and connect the iPod when prompted.

  • I get a message saying that my ipod needs to be formatted for windows

I originally used my ipod on my pc, but now I want to use it on my laptop. I connected it to my laptop, and I got a message saying something like “your ipod needs to be formatted for windows, would you like itunes to reformat your ipod?” I don’t understand why it’s saying that I need to format it for windows when I have always been using it on windows. I use mediamonkey to transfer my files, and when I click on the ipod in mediamonkey, no songs show up. How can I get mediamonkey to recognize the songs on the ipod without reformatting my ipod (I don’t want to erase all the songs)?
    Thanks.

    Hmm..Here's a few options:
~Hopefully you can see your Ipod under My Computer.
    1. Enable the viewing of hidden files, then browse to (let's call it I:/ drive.)
    I:/YourIpod_Name/iPodControl/Music
Copy the whole music folder to your desktop or somewhere safe. That folder contains all your songs, though they will have names such as HGB3.mp3.
(Enable Hidden Files<Under Advanced View>: Control Panel>Appearance and Themes>Folder Options>View Tab>Show Hidden Files and Folders)
~If it doesn't appear under My Computer or if it does.
    2. Use a third-party software program to get the songs from your Ipod to a folder on your computer. This will get the songs from your Ipod with the correct artists and names. Not sure if posting links to third-party software is 'legal', but here it goes:
    http://download.cnet.com/iDump/3000-2169_4-10407429.html
I use this one to keep a backup of my songs from time to time. It's best to keep the backup on an external drive just in-case you HD dies.
If your still not able to get a backup of your songs, well that's all I have right now. Maybe you can wait for other replies, or just go ahead and format it(but you lose your songs).
    Now to restore:
Let's see why it isn't appearing under iTunes.
Open up iTunes with your ipod connected, ignore anything that may pop up. Click the tab called 'Help' and then 'Run Diagnostics...'. Check only the two last boxes:
    -Iphone/Ipod connectivity tests
    -Iphone/Ipod touch sync tests
Hit next, again make sure your ipod is connected...next one more time.
You should pass all tests for connectivity.
Now sync, which you should fail.
    Apple wrote:
This feature tests iPod and iPhone connectivity on a Windows PC running iTunes. Except for syncing, the diagnostic tests in iTunes do not test the hardware or software on the iPod/iPhone.
If any problems occur under the connectivity tests, post here.
If your up to losing your songs, your ipod is treated like a volume so right-click > format, should format it, deleting everything. When connected to iTunes, it should present the option to restore.
^I can say this, because I've done it, but I don't know if the outcome will be the same for you.

  • Ipod needs to be formatted to work with windows

Today I was walking home, listening to my ipod and suddenly it turned off. But I thought "must be out of power". So I put it in my windows based computer and I get a small window saying that my ipod needs to be formatted to be used on windows, and that opening itunes will fix it. So it hit OK and itunes opens, and hangs for a good 3 minutes or so, and my ipod still doesn't show up in the "my devices" tab. I am using the latest itunes and have tried repairing itunes through the installer, if anyone could post some support, it would be greatly appreciated.

On the PC, click here and follow the instructions.

  • Itunes says Ipod needs to be formatted for windows

I originally loaded my ipod on a windows XP machine. That machine recognizes my ipod, but won't let me write to it. I moved it to another machine and it says that I need to format the ipod for windows. Won't that erase the music on my ipod? Is there any other way to make my pod visible to itunes without formatting it?

  • Does my Ipod need to be formatted?

I recently bought an Ipod Nano, and it is not registering with my Itunes. When I try to download the new version of Itunes, it always tells me there is an error with "Stopping Services," and I have no idea how to correct the problem. I am wondering if formatting my Ipod would help at all, but I am unsure as to how to format it. Can anyone help me?

    Hi
To make it more obvious: your iPod has nothing to do with it when you try downloading an update of iTunes and it fails. Would not help to format it.
Have you problems downloading other software to your PC too? Sounds like a network problem...

  • IPOD Needs to be formatted with windows

Every Time i plug in my ipod to either charge it or sync it it says that my ipod is not comatable with windows and needs to be restored. This has happened every time i plug it in... is it an ipod issue or an itunes issue??? if so how do i fix?

    1. you have to completely remove the present version of iTunes by following the steps in the article(Removing iTunes and QuickTime for Windows):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698.
    2. reinstall the latest version 7.2
    3. we need to restore the iPod using the iPod reset utility.
Use the following link to download the utility.

  • Ipod installation freezes at format screen

i tried reinstalling my 20g ipod because itunes wouldnt recognize it. message came up telling me the ipod needed to be formatted. it started formatting and the bar just keeps going and restarting. so far ive left it for 15 min, im pretty sure its not gonna work. any ideas? i went tto the site and they dont even mention any formatting involved in the installation.

Formatting the iPod shouldn’t take any longer than a few minutes.

  • My ipod has no songs and it says that there is no more space.  When I connect it to my computer windows says the drive needs to be formatted.

My ipod classic shows no music and says that the hard drive is full.  When I connect it to my computer (that has itunes on it) it does nothing but windows says it needs to be formatted.  It shows up under computer as a USB Drive.  It won't sink.

If this is the problem following the instruction.  Frequently it is a hardware problem.
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
Otherwise try (assuming that other devices see your network)
    - A reset. Nothing wil be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power of and then back on your router.
    - Reset network settings: Settings>Genral>Reset>Reset Network Settings

  • My iPod nano needs to be format, but it doesn't format using fat 32. And it says that it is corrupted. What should I do?

My iPod nano needs to be format, but it doesn't format using fat 32. And it says that it is corrupted. What should I do?
As I connect it to itunes, it shows that it needs to be format. When I try to format it (fat32) it doesn't finish. And it says, the ipod appears to be corrupted.

similar to what is happening to me....the difference is, after restoring itunes detect ipod and ask to restore again and again....
I know it may look kinda stupid but: just leave the ipod there for about 2 minutes, that's about the time my itunes is taking to detect my ipod...if it doesn't work, try connecting ur ipod to other computer with itunes (no need to sync, just to check if itunes will recognize) to check if the problem is with the ipod or with the itunes and/or computer.

    Hello there Kelly,
When you follow the regular syncing steps outlined in this article named iOS: Syncing with iTunes found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1386, iTunes in Windows will prompt you that the iPod needs to be erased and synced. That process will format the iPod to the use the Windows file system.

  • Ipod needs to be restored, but itunes wont do it!

my ipod needs to be restored so i can sync it. it doesnt even show up as anything other than "ipod" with no information about the ipod. when i click restore i has an error message saying:
"there was a problem downloading the ipod software for 'ipod'. the requested resource was not found."
does anyone know how to fix this problem?

    Hi DanielStarr!
Okay, let's see if we can get your iPod back in shape and being recognized by your computer, if we can.
Disconnect your iPod from your computer.
Then, reset it a few times in a row. To reset an iPod with a clickwheel:
First, toggle your iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a couple of times.
Then, press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for 5-10 seconds.
    Do that a few times.
Then, let your iPod's battery recharge from your computer for maybe 30-60 minutes.
After you've done that, disconnect it from your computer, and reset it a couple of more times
Now, try putting your iPod into disk mode. To do that, follow the instrucions in this article.
With your iPod in disk mode (or hopefully in disk mode), open iTunes, and connect the iPod to your computer.
If it is not recognized in iTunes, then you could try this kind of sequence a few times: disconnecting, restarting computer, resetting iPod a few times, putting into disk mode, and reconnecting to computer.
If that doesn't do anything to get it recognized in iTunes, then we might as well just try formatting it in Windows.
1 - Connect your iPod to your computer.
2 - When iTunes has finished syncing with your iPod, open "My Computer".
3 - Right-click on your iPod, and click on "Format". (IF your iPod is not showing in My Computer, make sure that disk use is not enabled i iTunes).
4 - Here, verify that your formatting settings are "Default", with the format type set for FAT32. Also, make sure that "Quick Scan" is not selected.
5 - Then, click on "OK" to begin the formatting process.
6 - When this is complete (it might take a while), see if your iPod is recognized in iTunes for a restore.

  • Needs to be formatted???

i used my ipod classic just fine for a few months, but now my pc started wining about not being connected to a 2.0 usb slot, i thaught it was because i was connecting 2 ipods at the same place (front of my pc) so i just disregarded it, only thinking it would lead to slower transfer. but a day later, it connected as usual, messaged again, but without other ipod. so i thaught i should use another port, so changed it to the back of my pc and it didnt show the message, fine...
but then, my ipod just disconnected, corrupting all albumart on my ipod: in main menu all show perfect, but in coverflow or during songplay it shows "snow" or how it is called in english with smal coloured parts in it. after connecting again, it showed the ipod had to be formatted to function well again. so i reset it with itunes, synced and now 2 days later, it gives the 2.0 message and the note i have to format it again. my ipod ejected itself again.
i havent had any trouble so far syncing/connecting ipod, and i always disregarded the posts here, thinking it was unknowledge of the owners, and i had an ipod before, but it seems that it struck me too.
it might be a double post as i didnt really search for it, but please answer if you know what is wrong.

Install the latest version driver of your computer's mainboard will solve the USB 2.0 problem.
You can connect other removable storage device to see if windows show that message, if show, means you need to install the driver.

  • IPod needs to be reformated every "second use"

    Hey
I am German so pleas excuse my spelling and gramma ;-(
I just reinstaled my Computer a cupple of days ago, so it´s clean, before i reinstaled it everything was working just fine.
So here is what happens, i plug in my USB conection in iPod and USB slot, it takes some time untill i get toled that my iPod needs to get reformated for use with this computer, i do reformate it, it works, i put the ~1600 i have on it, disconect it properly - and the next time i conect it we are back to waiting a while and having to reformate it...
I can´t imagin that is is healthy for the iPod to hammer it with 1600 songs every second day wen i want to put a cupple of songs or a playlist on it (aside from it being anyoing no matter how bad it is for the hardware...)
It would be great if someone could help me fix this.
I am not a profesional so it might be issues with wrong instalation of the USB ports (software wise, i did not change any hardware) but i think i got al the drivers on the computer properly.

It is telling me that i need to reformate it for use on this computer so i am pritty darn shure i can´t just put the files on it like i would wen it would work like it suposed to work (and did work sinc i bought it in september)
Again. brok down so everyone hopfully gets what i am fighting with
    1. I conect the iPod
    2. the i pod tells me it needs to be reformated for use on this computer.
    3. i reformate it.
    4. it works just fine, i can put all the songs on it like i should be able to.
    5. the next time i conect my iPod to the VERY SAME computer there is minutes of it only being the USB harddrive, than i get a mesage that i need to reformate it for use on this computer (wich, yes, like formating usualy dos, deletes all files)
help would be awsome becaus after 3 days of this i feel like having a creative jukebox would be better, and that should be telling you something sigh

  • IPod wont restore or format?

    Hi,
I have a 2nd gen ipod nano, in itunes it comes up as Capacity: N/A and tells me it needs to be restored. I do this and it fails to complete it and just loops over and over.
Upon plugging the ipod into the computer windows also tells me the drive needs to be formatted, but again fails to do that.
Is it just broken now or is something corrupt?

You need to reinstall the driver. Disconnect the iPod. Close everything. Right click My Computer, select manage, select device, select USBs, find the Apple Mobile driver, right click to uninstall it. It should disappear from the list. Close and restart the computer. Open iTunes then reconnect the iPod. It will ask you to start over - rename, etc. Do so. It should then automatically sychronize if you chose that. Or you should be able to do it manually. If not, or you already tried that, call Apple. I'm off to listen to my book.
